The joy of the Christmas season will be celebrated throughout the month of December at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Oxford. Planned events for children and adults are designed to get everyone into the spirit of the holiday. Breakfast With Santa will be offered on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Breakfast, including pancakes and sausage, will be served in the fellowship hall, where there will also be an activity center for children with coloring, games and crafts. Santa Claus will be in the sanctuary area, in a space decorated for Christmas that will be just right for photographs. Attendees may choose to purchase a photo with Santa to take home with them. Tickets will be available at the door, with breakfast available to both children and adults. There will be a per-family cap
on the cost for large families. “We want to make it possible for the whole family to come,” said the Rev. Mary Ann Mertz, pastor. “They’ll walk out with their tummies full and a family photograph with Santa.” A week later, people may enjoy taking part in a long-standing tradition at St. Christopher’s at its annual Cookie Walk on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. until noon or sold out. The Cookie Walk offers a place for people to obtain homemade holiday cookies without having to bake them at home. Members of St. Christopher’s congregation are preparing a wide variety of traditional and unusual cookies that will be offered for sale at a perpound rate. Containers will be provided for shoppers, who may stroll through the tables of cookies, making their selections. Many people buy cookies as gifts, and gift wrapping will be available. Lucky Dawg Rescue Seeks Live Nativity Will Tell Foster Families, Forever Homes The Complete Christmas Story By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, a nonprofit organization that rescues homeless, abused or unwanted dogs and cats, is currently seeking foster homes for rescued pets. People who are willing to provide a forever home for animals currently in foster care are also needed. Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue Inc. is an all-volunteer organization that was founded on Jan. 1 of this year. “We are brand new, and we have already adopted out over 80 dogs and approximately 40 cats,” said organization founder Mary Bauer. “We are all foster-based. All of our animals are learning how to live in a home before being adopted out.” She noted that some cats rescued by the organization but not in foster care can be adopted from Pet Valu stores, See Animal Rescue pg 6

In a recent ceremony at the governor’s residence, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Deputy Secretary for Driver and Vehicle Services Kurt Myers joined other Pennsylvania school bus safety advocates to honor nine students for communicating important school bus safety messages and six school bus drivers for their superior driving skills. The students, in kindergarten through eighth grade, were recognized for their winning entries in the 2018 School Bus Safety Poster Contest. They were chosen from 352 public and private school student entries. First-place entries earned the honor of being
forwarded to a national competition. The theme for this year’s contest - “My School Bus, The Safest Form of Student Transportation!� reflects the commitment school bus drivers show daily to both parents and students. Among the local honorees were Alivia Spitz, Reiffton School, Reading, first place for third- through fifth-graders; Sally Nguyen, Reiffton School, Reading, second place for thirdthrough fifth-graders; Desteny Keiser, Upper Dauphin Area Middle School, Lykens, second place for sixth- through eighthgraders; and Emalie Brown, Upper Dauphin Area Middle School, Lykens, third place for
sixth- through eighth-graders. The school bus drivers received certificates and governor’s citations for winning the 2018 Pennsylvania School Bus Driver Safety Competition, which was held in June and tested the drivers’ knowledge of safety rules and safe operation of buses. Honorees included Shanon O’Brien, Chester County, Krapf Bus Companies, first place in the Conventional Bus category; Michael Webster, Lebanon County, Brightbill Transportation, first place in the Transit-Style Bus category; and Ruth Del Vecchio, Chester County, Krapf Bus Companies, second place in the Transit-Style Bus category.

La Comunidad Hispana (LCH), a nonprofit health center with locations in Kennett Square, Oxford, and West Grove, received funding this year from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to expand its mental health services to include specific counseling targeted to individuals with substance abuse disorder. This funding stream, Expanding Access to Quality Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Services (SUD-MH), has supported the addition of a new behavioral health consultant, Meredith Sullivan, to LCH’s existing mental health team of three. Sullivan has a master’s degree in counseling psychology and previously worked at Brandywine Counseling and Community Services in Wilmington, Del. She is a certified drug and alcohol counselor and divides her time between LCH’s sites to ensure that people living throughout southern Chester County have access to the counseling they need. In response to the growing opioid crisis in Chester County, as well as considerable abuse of other drugs, including alcohol, LCH plans to expand its capacity for substance abuse treatment further in the years to come. LCH representatives attended a planning meeting on the topic of “Facing the Opioid Crisis Together� at the Independence Blue Cross Foundation in Philadelphia, a funder tackling the addiction issue in the region. Representatives of local nonprofit Kacie’s Cause, which focuses on prevention education and social services for individuals with substance abuse disorder, joined LCH at the meeting. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Oxford Edition holiday presentation is planned. “We have a performer coming to perform ‘A Christmas Carol,’” said library director Catherine O’Sullivan, who added that the actor, Christopher Davis, had brought his version of the classic tale of Christmas transformation to the library many years ago. “He was very popular, and everyone enjoyed him, so we asked him back,” said O’Sullivan. Davis’ rendition of the Charles Dickens story includes audience volunteers helping Davis to bring the characters of Scrooge and the Cratchit family to life as he narrates. In addition, the library will
hold a Gingerbread House Contest for area residents from prekindergarten through adults, including a special family category. First-, second-, and thirdplace winners will be named in five categories. The gingerbread houses will be on display at the library through Friday, Dec. 7. Also on Friday, a live Nativity will be coordinated by members of Gracepoint Church at Kitchen Kettle Village, 3529 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. At 6 p.m., Mrs. Claus and Yummie will be in the Kling House Restaurant to meet friends by reservation. Some dogs and cats come to the organization from families that cannot keep their pets, while others are rescued from dire situations. “A quarter of our animals are owner surrenders,” Bauer noted. “We get puppy mill (dogs), and we also pull from animal control.” Every effort is made to find the owners of stray dogs. “If there is a lost dog, we put them on hold and scan them for a chip,” explained Bauer. “If it doesn’t work out and the owners are not found, we will go ahead and take the dog as long as we have a foster available.” Bauer said the organization’s biggest need is for foster families for both cats and dogs. “Foster families must complete an application and we check their veterinarian references, and we will come and do some teaching in their home as soon as the application is cleared,” she explained. “We provide the food, the vet care and the crate. We want (the dogs and cats) to learn things so it’s easier for them to become adopted.” One of the organization’s success stories
is Rose, at dog that was found as a stray after being hit by a car and turned over to Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue. The rescue funded medical care over several months, which included the amputation of a leg, but Rose blossomed in her foster family’s care and they recently adopted her. Bauer said that the rescue is entirely dependent on its volunteers and foster families. “I have an amazing group of volunteers. My husband, Mark, trains dogs, so he works with the dogs that come in,” said Bauer. “We feel really lucky. Each year, Stillwaters Presbyterian Church presents the story of the Nativity in a way that puts events into context for visitors. More than a stable scene, the presentation has 10 scenes that tell the story from the Annunciation through the birth of Christ and, later, the visitation of the wise men. Visitors, in groups with a guide, will follow a well-marked, handicapped-accessible path lined with luminarias. The first stop will be the only location where a performer speaks, with a portrayal of Isaiah
the prophet reading in English and Hebrew, announcing that Christ shall come. At the following stops, animals and silent actors will portray the roles from the Christmas story, with the goal of making visitors feel like they are looking in on events as they happened. At one point, there will be a setup of the entire town of Bethlehem, with people working at trades just as they would have done 2,000 years ago. In all, there will be 35 performers and many live animals participating in the live Nativity. A brochure will help explain each stop. The final scene will provide a view of the importance of Christ’s birth, with a reminder of the cross and an empty tomb. All events are set up outdoors, and organizers note that the silence of the scenes fosters a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. The event is suitable for people of all ages, and people are free to go along the path at their own pace. After viewing the scenes, visitors may stop in the church for homemade cookies and hot chocolate. Live seasonal music will be provided by West Fallowfield Christian School students on Dec. 7 and by students from Wilmington Christian School on Dec. 8. The church’s holiday observances will continue on Christmas Eve, Monday, Dec. 24, when Stillwaters Presbyterian will hold a special candlelight Christmas service at 5:30 p.m. “It’s a service that’s very kid-friendly. The Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS) will host the 28th annual greens sale on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, 6 miles south of Quarryville on

Additionally, some customization of items will be available. Each year, the greens are harvested after Thanksgiving from trees and shrubs growing at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, which is located across the road from the archives building and is owned by the SLCHS, as well as from community members’ properties. “Our neighbors here are really good,” commented SLCHS president Stan White. “With all the wet weather this year, the greens should be in great shape.” The sale committee is careful about what greens are used in the arrangements, opting to use evergreens that do not turn brown too quickly. “If the boxwood trees are watered from time to time, some people have them last until February,” said committee member Linda White. The sale committee noted that people who are not SLCHS members regularly help with the sale. “They like the fact that we’re trying to preserve local heritage,” explained sale committee chair Peg Wurst. Cash and checks will be accepted for payment at the sale. The proceeds from the event, as well as the sale of several book titles, 2019 calendars illustrated with pencil drawings of local landscapes, and notecards, will be used to sustain the SLCHS. The sale is the society’s biggest fundraiser, now that the House and History Tour was discontinued two years ago. “As owners of the (Robert Fulton) Birthplace, the society is in charge of addressing major issues and regular upkeep,” Stan said. Escape rooms have become popular in recent years. In the activity, small groups of people have a set amount of time to find clues and solve puzzles in order to escape a locked room. Black Rock Retreat, 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, made its first foray into the phenomenon last year. “We were looking for more winter program activities,” said program assistant Barbra Keeler. “This is another opportunity to get people on campus and use our facilities.” Summer camp program director Ben Herr helped to design last year’s escape room, which attracted approximately 25 groups during its one-month run. Herr spearheaded the latest installation with assistance from program team member Nicklas Frede. Black Rock is a Christian camping and retreat center, so the duo set the escape room aboard the ship the prophet Jonah sailed on in an attempt to avoid God’s command to go to Ninevah. Groups of four to eight people will be locked in the basement of the crafts cottage and given an hour to find Jonah, exiting through the locked back door if they are successful. The room is wheelchair-accessible. Herr has created escape rooms for his friends, and he follows a specific process to design a
successful event. “We come up with fun puzzles, then try to take a bunch of ideas and organize them into a straight line,” he said. “We use visual clues, physical clues, and logic. It’s hands-on, which is a lot of the appeal.” During their time on Jonah’s ship, participants should pick up everything in the room that is not a heavy object - such as several trunks - in search of clues. They may be required to assemble tools to retrieve clues or find puzzle solutions on disparate items. “It’s fairly challenging, but a staffer will provide hints, and we don’t limit them to three like other escape rooms,” Herr remarked. “It’s a great group activity.” “If you’re looking for something for your family to do during the holidays, it’s a fun activity for (people of) a range of ages,” added Keeler. Reservations are required to enter the escape room, and there is a cost per person. Sessions are offered at 6 and 8 p.m. on weekdays and at 2, 4, 6, and 8 p.m. on weekends through Friday, April 12. Keeler suggested that groups may opt to enter the escape room before or after the annual Christmas hymn sing, which will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9, in the lobby of the Maranatha Retreat Center. Refreshments will be served at 3 p.m. Bob Meck will lead the singing of Christmas hymns and carols from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m., and the Crescendo Community Choir will perform during breaks in the singing. Dec. 14, appearance of Charlie Zahm in concert at 7:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary. St. Christopher’s became the home for the Friends Folk Club’s concerts last year, beginning with a Christmas concert by Zahm. “He was phenomenal,” Mertz said, describing the performance as Christmasbased Celtic music. “His voice is just absolutely amazing. His musicianship is incredible.” The performance will be in the sanctuary, which has a hearing loop for those who wear hearing aids. For concertgoers who do not wear hearing aids but would like hearing assistance, special headsets are available. Tickets will be available at the door. In addition, there will be a collection of nonperishable foods for the Lighthouse Youth Center, as well as a collection of gently used shoes for victims of natural disasters. “If (attendees) want to donate to those two good causes, they can do that too. We’re hopeful that we’ll be able to do some good,” Mertz said. St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church is located at 116 Lancaster Pike, Oxford. “We moved (the hymn sing) to the afternoon in hopes that more people will be willing or able to come out for it,” Keeler said, explaining that the organizers wanted to accommodate people who do not like to drive after dark.
