Lions Club To Hold Holiday Decorating Contest BY FRANCINE FULTON
Parkesburg-area residents are invited to take part in the annual holiday lights/decorations contest being presented by the Parkesburg Lions Club. Judging will take place on Saturday, Dec. 19, starting at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and thirdplace winners. Event organizers said the contest
is something that people can enjoy during the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s something to do for fun. Holidays will be different this year,” noted Lions Club member Robin McKenna, one of the event organizers. “We just wanted to do something fun and community-oriented.” Residents are invited to be as creative as possible while decorating. “There are no real criteria. Christmas On Main Set In Parkesburg he Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) will present Christmas On Main, a holiday open house that will highlight local businesses, on Saturday, Dec. 5, from noon to 5 p.m. in downtown Parkesburg. The event will also feature displays by craft vendors and community groups, several food trucks, Christmas caroling and more. Activities will take place on Main Street, as well as on First Avenue. “This year we have expanded,” said PAC member Jenny Alexander, one of the event organizers. “(Previously), it was just on Main Street. This

year we are partnering with businesses on First Avenue.” She noted that street parking will be available in both locations. “We have food trucks coming that will (offer) both entrees and great desserts,” Alexander added. “There will be carolers roaming around and a bonfire on Main Street with s’mores.” PAC will also present a scavenger hunt with Parkesburg Ducks. “Someone in town - no one knows who it is - takes these rubber ducks and hides them all over town. They did it over the summer. (As part of the activity), you take a picture of a duck you found and post it to (the

For Christmas on Main, people will be asked to collect as many ducks as they can and return them to Experience Positive Therapy, 226 W. presentation will be hosted by Trevor Noah of “The Daily Show.” The Kid of the Year will be featured on a cover of TIME with a story in TIME for Kids. Ronak, who formed Kids Connect in May in response to the coronavirus pandemic, said the classes were initially developed to give students alternative activities to enjoy while school was not in session. “ With schools being closed, kids were not able to immerse themselves in educational and other social activities,” said Ronak. “When (my) school shut down, I wasn’t left with much to do. Schools only gave limited schoolwork, and I just watched TV or played video games, which wasn’t the most productive thing to do, and my friends were doing the exact same things. All of the kids whom
we teach now are engaged with something to do. They are learning different subjects in a fun way.” After establishing the Facebook page, Ronak solicited the help of his friends, who also teach classes and share their knowledge with other youths. Since the company’s inception, close to 800 students have attended the workshops, and volunteer instructors have given a total of nearly 500 hours. Since the classes are offered online, they can be viewed by students who reside in the United States and worldwide. “I want to reach kids all over the world and help them develop skills,” Ronak said. “(Kids Connect) has a really big future. Ronak submitted an online application for Kid of the Year this past summer. “On Dec. 4, they will talk about the top 20 finalists and pick the top five and then the winner. It is a virtual event,” he said. “I’m not sure how it will operate, but they asked me to send a recording talking about my mission.” The upcoming television

She added that many of the Lions Club’s events were canceled this year, including its annual Halloween parade, so the club is grateful to be able to present the decorating contest this year. The Lions Club, a community service organization, is currently seeking new members. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the region in March and closed Chester County government and court offices to all but essential employees, staff in the Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court established virtual services for issuing both marriage licenses and probating wills. Due to the county’s investment in technology, the virtual service continues. When the county opened back up to inperson services in June, but by appointment only, self-service schedules were added, allowing those who needed to probate estates or apply for a marriage license to schedule their own appointments. Chester County’s Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court provides of number of services for the public. The Register of Wills probates wills and appoints estate representatives for decedents who die with or without a will. The Register of Wills also serves as an agent for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for filing and payment of inheritance taxes. The Clerk of the Orphans’ Court accepts filings for adoptions and guardianships of minors and incapacitated persons, and it issues marriage licenses. Chester County Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court announced the extension of hours for marriage license applications, as well as improvements in technology to accommodate virtual appointments and self-service scheduling. These new offerings are intended to improve services to customers and meet the increase in demand that the Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court is currently experiencing. Office hours have been extended to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays to accommodate those who need a marriage license, but do not have the flexibility of applying during the workday. Regular office hours for marriage license applications are weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March, the Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court office has been experiencing a substantial increase in marriage license applications from all over the region. In addition, local residents are invited to donate nonperishable food items for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. “When we go through town, (people should) bring canned goods out to the sleigh,” said Lions member Jim Groff. “We will have fire trucks in front of us and behind us to light up the street.” He noted that food donations will also be placed in the fire vehicles if necessary. “This is something different to give back to the community and to help the food cupboard,” Groff added. “Their shelves are bare.” Items currently needed by the food cupboard include canned fruit and vegetables, boxed potatoes, sauerkraut, oatmeal, peanut butter, canned tuna and chicken, baked beans, canned pasta sauce, boxed pasta and rice sides, hearty soups like Dinty More beef stew and canned pasta meals like SpaghettiOs. “For our normal event we usually have companies sponsor the decorating contest and give prize (money),”

The grant programs are funded from CARES Act funding acquired by Chester County government. The commissioners have appointed the CCIU to administer both grant programs because of the organization’s experience in administration of the commonwealth’s Child Care Subsidy program. The Chester County Department of Human Services is coordinating the program on behalf of the county. Guidelines for eligibility include annual income limits, residency in Chester County, and reasons for the child care need. The grant process is open to families with children from birth to age 12. Children with disabilities may be eligible through age 21. Funds for both the $10 million child care subsidy grant program and the $5 million child care provider grant program are available up to Wednesday, Dec. 30, and will be awarded while funds last. The Parkesburg and Christiana Lions Clubs are once again participating in the Adopt a Soldier Project. As part of the program, boxes filled with gifts and personal care items are being sent to a battalion of soldiers that is serving overseas. Boxes will be mailed to the unit in time for Christmas. Past Lions district governor Nany Gauthier, chair of the Pennsylvania Lions Adopt a Soldier Project, said that the packages collected locally will be sent to an address that was provided by a Pennsylvania state command officer at Fort Indiantown Gap. “Their names cannot be released due to security reasons and they are in a remote

Arthur Hall Insurance recognized West Chester’s three volunteer fire companies as it delivered fire hats from The Hartford’s Junior Fire Marshall Program to Station 51. First West Chester, Good Will and Fame fire companies distributed the hats to children during October, which was Fire Prevention Month. Children of all ages received
hats at fire station birthday parties and wore them when attending community events in which firefighters participated. Despite limited public contact due to the pandemic, volunteer firefighters were able to deliver the hats to many school groups while maintaining social distance. All three of West Chester’s fire companies are 100% volunteer.
