Scouts from Atglen Pack 20 work on documenting graves at St. John’s Episocpal Church

“With an Eagle Scout project, you have to have a field work phase. A lot of the graves are newer and don’t have a lot of data on them,” Tyler explained. “We went out with data sheets and went through about 100 graves or so over a course of a few days, (listing) plot number, what the gravestone is made out of (and other characteristics).”

Using the database that Tyler created, the church can now search for all of the veterans’ graves, search a specific name, click on a certain grave on the map and find out who is there and locate unsold graves, among other features.

Tyler’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony was held on Oct. 30 at the Pomeroy Fire Company. He also received accolades from Atglen Mayor Darren Hodorovich and state Rep. Dan Williams. Tyler, a senior at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, said he is unsure of his plans after graduation, but knows that he will pursue a career that involves computers. “Computers is a wide field and I don’t know where I will wind up, but it will definitely be with a keyboard in my hand,” he said.

Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, will host an Advent service on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. The yearly event will include several festive Scottish traditions, performances from members of the congregation and local musicians and holiday treats.

“Even though (the service) has a heavy Scottish and Celtic theme, we want to promote the Christmas season through Advent,” said Daniel Henry, vice president of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation.

Pastor John Barlow will give an opening prayer at the beginning of the service, and Henry will give a welcome to attendees. Musical acts will follow Henry’s welcome, such as performances from local accordionist Shirley Girvin and the Solanco High School jazz band. “I love the community integration of the service,” said Henry. “A lot of local families and kids usually come out to see the jazz band.”

Donald and Becki Henderson will sing traditional Gaelic Christmas songs, and Donald, who is on the board of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation, will read the Christmas story in the Braid Scots dialect. Richard Keene, another member of the foundation, will sing “O Holy Night,” and bagpiper Ruth Fisher will perform during the service as well. Fisher also serves as a judge for the yearly bagpiping competition at the Covenanter Scottish Highlands Festival in Quarryville. After the service, refreshments and holiday treats will be available in the social hall.

Annual Advent Service Slated

The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation will hold its annual Advent service at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. The Celtic/traditional program will feature the Solanco jazz band, tenor Richard Keene, bagpiper Ruth Fisher, accordionist Shirley Girvin, congregational singing, and Gaelic music and readings.

The Schoolroom Museum at the Covenanter Church will be open prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served after the service.
