Friends Association Receives Shoes For Children In Need By Francine Fulton
Max’s Kicks for Kids (MK4K), a new nonprofit organization that formed to provide new back-to-school shoes for children in need in Chester County, recently made its first donation of 3 2 pairs of shoes to the Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children. The Friends Association distributed the shoes to children whose parents are served by the association, which provides an emergency family shelter, homelessness prevention programs, outreach to homeless families and a housing stability program. MK4K was founded by Lynn and Tom Engle in July of this year in honor of their son, Max, who passed away in 2018. Max was the first male probation officer in Chester County’s WRAP (Women’s Reentry Assessment & Programming) Initiative. In this role, See Shoes pg 10

One of ways that grieving families can find comfort after a heartbreaking loss is to focus their energies on keeping the memories of their loved one alive through positive efforts to benefit the community. Max’s Kicks for Kids (MK4K), a new organization that provides back-toschool shoes for children in need, is named for Max Engle, a Chester County probation officer who passed away in September 2018. MK4K was founded by president Tom Engle, Max’s father; vice president Lynn Engle, Max’s mother; and secretary Claire Engle, Max’s sister. Lynn said that the family members never imagined that they would start an organization in Max’s memory. “Our niece and nephew lost their son, and they have a large foundation - Griffin’s Guardians. The Gap Town Clock Lions Club will hold its first Christmas bazaar at the Gap Fire Hall on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will offer food and shopping to get everyone into the spirit of the season. Local vendors and crafters will be featured, with more than 25 tables already booked for the event in addition to tables for Lions Club member businesses. “We’re trying to showcase the vendors in the community,” said Jason Hurst, club president. Dr. Renny Sardella is celebrating his 25th year as a doctor of optometry (OD). His practice, Sardella Eye Associates, has locations in Coatesville and Kennett Square. After graduating from Coatesville Area High School, Renny received a Bachelor of Science in biology from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He then obtained a Doctor of Optometry at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He completed further in-depth training during rotations at Lankenau Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital and Crozer-Chester Medical Center. He has been in practice since 1994. How Small Businesses Give Back Information from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs says that small businesses, or firms with fewer than 500 workers, accounted for 99.7% of businesses in 2016, the most recent year for data. Firms with fewer than 100 workers accounted for 98.2% of companies. Thanks to their influence and reach, small businesses have the potential to impact local communities in numerous ways. Small businesses employ local residents. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.8% of net new jobs in the United States between 1993 and 2016. Small businesses are innovative. The SBA notes that small businesses represent about 96% of employer firms in high-patenting manufacturing industries. That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas. Small businesses support local charities. Many local businesses give to charity, particularly local charities. Some donate money while others may offer their professional services or event spaces, each of which can be particularly helpful to local communities. Small businesses contribute to community identity. Small businesses
contribute to the charm and character of a town or city. Many local businesses make up the fabric of a town, and towns are known and loved for the businesses that have endured. Small businesses help the environment. Shopping locally means consumers do not have to travel far to get their goods and services. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s research report on walkable downtown centers found small businesses encourage walking and cycling, helping to reduce air pollution from vehicles. Small businesses keep money in communities. Local businesses keep disposable income and tax money within their communities. Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads, and municipal services. Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships. Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. In the United States, the majority of businesses in operation are classified as small businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration. Consumers can express their appreciation
for the small businesses in their communities in various ways. Here are eight ways to support local businesses: 1. Shop at small businesses regularly. 2. Use social media to give your recommendations on small businesses that go above and beyond in quality and service. 3. Speak with business owners about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences. 4. Encourage your family or friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan. 5. Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or club-based fundraisers. 6. If you own a small business, keep business cards, flyers, or a sign advertising another small business in the area to show mutual support. 7. Invite small business owners to community activity centers, nursing homes, schools, and the like to share their experiences about starting a business in the area. 8. Participate in community events that may be sponsored by small business owners.

more and more by the loss of him, not just in our world, but in the world (where) he had a big impact on a lot of people,” said Lynn. “At Max’s funeral there was a woman, whom we didn’t know, who introduced herself as being one of the people on probation that Max had supervised. She said that she was sad for herself because she wouldn’t have Max to help her, but she was also sad for all the other people who wouldn’t have Max’s help. “As the months went on, that statement really rang truer and truer with us,” Lynn continued. “In June of this year, we started feeling like we wanted to do something to continue the good he did.” The family formed a nonprofit organization and chose to collect shoes because Max loved shoes. “A lot of organizations (collect) Christmas gifts, so we were thinking about back-to-school supplies. I was a teacher, and that was close to my heart,” Lynn explained. “My daughter
said, ‘It has to be shoes.’ That was her idea.” In time, the family partnered with the Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children, recently donating 32 pairs of shoes to the organization. Lynn said forming the charity has given the family a new focus. “Even before we started the foundation, his life and death were never out of our minds. Until you go through it, people don’t understand,” Lynn said. “We think about him moment by moment. (Forming the charity) helped me to have something to focus on. My husband and I are both retired, and we have a lot of time. It keeps my mind busy; it makes me feel better to do some good.” Lynn said the task of forming a charity has been emotionally difficult, but it helps with the healing process. “I get my strength from Max,” she said. “I feel like I have the strength of two people, and I couldn’t do it without him.”

But the world needs all the good that I can do.” “(Volunteering) was my baby step toward forming the foundation. It is humbling and gratifying to see the good we do (at the food cupboard), and we wanted to do more,” Lynn said. “As time went on, we were struck

Volunteers, who must be age 18 and over, are required to undergo an interview, get a background check and take part in a training session. Volunteers are asked to meet with their friends for four hours minimum each month for one year. The pairs can share activities such as meeting for lunch or going to a sporting event. As of this month, Thompsen reported that there are 45 Compeer one-to-one matches in Chester County; six calling matches, where pairs talk on the phone; and two e-buddies, where the friends communicate via email or text. “ We need volunteers for everywhere in the county,” Kueny said. She mentioned that some volunteers with the program are students at West Chester University. That, he said, is why the Compeer program is so important and successful. “Compeer friendship matches are proven to create connectedness, offering measurable outcomes for both matched partners, such as overcoming feelings of social isolation, loneliness and hopelessness,” he stated. Chisolm remains involved in the program and still maintains two one-to-one Compeer friendships. During the event, the volunteer pairs were recognized, as well as members of the Compeer Advisory Council. The event also included a costume contest. Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP), supported by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/ Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations. On the afternoon of Nov. 5, Jessie Brown, self-sufficiency advocate with The Factory Ministries, led a group of about a dozen adults in making pine cone turkey favors to be used at a special meal that was later held on Nov. 14 at The Factory. “A local church donated a full Thanksgiving meal for a Friendsgiving meal,” said Brown of the meal that was served to youth center attendees. The Community Care Team, made up of mostly Paradise-area residents who participate at The Factory, meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. Generally, the craft Brown schedules for the Care Team to complete gives back to the community in some way. She also puts out puzzles and games. “We made a plan for the Care Team to make the decorations for the meal,” said Brown, who
fashioned a model placemat for team members to duplicate in addition to the turkeys. The placemats were decorated with turkeys made from hand tracings, a poem, and the signature of the team member who created it. “I like using handprints because they are personal and simple,” said Brown. Another craft the team has completed was creating sunshine boxes for those who are ill. Team members also cut out curriculum for the literacy liaisons who work with children age 5 and under. The liaisons have their offices in The Factory. On Nov. 19, Care Team members were at The Factory from 2 to 4 p.m. to complete a craft with the seventh- through 12th-grade students who attend The Factory’s afterschool program. “Youth center students come to work on homework at that time,” said Brown. Generally, the students

he worked with at-risk women who were on parole or probation. By helping the women rebuild and restart their lives, he was also helping their families. Jennifer Lopez, executive director of the Friends Association and founder of the WRAP program, was a friend of Max and was once his supervisor. “We will never truly comprehend the depth of the impact that Max had on each person he interacted with,” said Lopez. “His calm, compassionate and caring demeanor created a healing and restorative relationship for so many women. Through MK4K his impact continues, and we are honored to be a part (of that).” “It’s been nice working with Jen because she knew Max and she misses him like we do. It’s been a nice partnership,” said Lynn. Lynn explained that the family purchased the shoes using its own funds, as well as donations gleaned from a GoFundMe campaign. “The Friends Association had shoe sizes for us. We went into Famous Footwear in Kennett Square with a spreadsheet and walked out with boxes of shoes,” Lynn reported. “We paid retail, but we’re working on some connections to get donations from shoe companies for a deeper discount.” By coincidence, the family was able to meet one of the recipients of the shoes. “We got to meet one of the children - who is a 9-monthold - and Max had worked with her mother,” Lynn said. “She happened to be there when we dropped off the shoes. It was fun to meet her and put at least one face to the kids we are helping.” Max’s Kicks for Kids plans to provide new back-to-school sneakers each fall for Chester County children who would not otherwise be able to afford them. “These children have many struggles to overcome,” said Lynn. “With the help of MK4K, they won’t have to worry about having a good pair of shoes to start the school year.” The family is currently trying to obtain shoes for next year’s back-to-school distribution. “We accept shoes from toddler (size) all the way up to men’s size 11 for high school students,” Lynn said. “Maybe someone knows someone who can connect us to one of the big shoe companies, so we can get our cost down per shoe. State Sen. Andy Dinniman recently announced that four transportation and road traffic and safety improvement projects in Chester County will receive more than $2.5 million in state funding. The projects, which are funded through PennDOT’s Multimodal Transportation Fund, were approved by the Commonwealth Finance Authority. They are as follows: $1 million for Schuylkill Township for the Route 23 sidewalk project; $735,812 for Oxford Borough for the Safe Routes to School project; $119,389 for West Bradford Township for lighting for Stargazers Roundabout; and $730,000 for East Fallowfield Township for repairs to Mortonville Road. 4-H Offers Opportunites For Youths The 4-H program held its “Fall Into 4-H” Project Day on Nov. 2 at the Romano 4-H Center of Chester County in Honey Brook to help kick off the new 4-H program year for 2019-20. The day engaged 32 4-H members, five teenage leaders, four adult 4-H volunteer leaders and a dozen or more parents in handson 4-H expressive arts projects. They were selected to receive this honor for their outstanding contributions, scholastic achievements, and community involvement. Owner/operator Stephen Arnold of the McDonald’s in Gap recommended the three students to receive this scholarship. Wood joined the McDonald’s restaurant team in September 2018. She is attending Messiah College in Mechanicsburg. Townsend joined the McDonald’s restaurant team in November 2015. Currently, she is enrolled at Pennsylvania College

Youngsters will also enjoy demonstrations by a local dance studio from noon to 2 p.m., and there will be a free craft table where children can paint a ceramic Christmas ornament. “I’m hoping children come. I think it will be a lot of fun,” Fuller said. When shoppers are ready for a snack or lunch, they can check out the Lions’ food tables, where they will find chicken potpie, hot dogs, chips and beverages. Organizers hope that visitors will also take time while eating to relax and meet friends and neighbors. “Come out and see people from the community,” Hurst said. “We want people to come and hang out and have a good time.” Proceeds from the event will help support community projects, including the Pequea Valley High School’s Career Occupational Relevant Education Academy (C.O.R.E.) Program, which teaches trades to students and promotes craftsmanship. “We thought the C.O.R.E. Program was really neat. It’s something, as a Lions Club, we’ve really gotten behind,” Hurst said. “They’re providing more of a hands-on, real-life experience in plumbing, framing, electrical and more. Instead of waiting for kids to get through high school then decide to go to a trade school, they have everything set up there, including a beautiful space to teach them the trades. We want to see kids have good opportunities.” The Gap Town Clock Lions Club will also use a portion of the proceeds to add to its fund to help local residents in emergencies. “ We’re building up some of our reserves to help if there are needs in the community,” Hurst said. This is the first major fundraising event for the Gap Town Clock Lions Club, which was formed just over a year ago and now has about 20 members. “We’re still building our group and spreading awareness that we are here. We’ve done some fundraisers, like chicken barbecues, but as far as something for

Nonprofit organizations Natural Lands and Trellis for Tomorrow are partnering together on a program that introduces Chester County youths who have faced social and economic disadvantages to real-world career opportunities in caring for nature. The program, called Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES), began in 2018. The partners recently announced they are looking to expand the program in 2020. The YES program focuses on creating the next generation of land stewards. A cohort of 13- to 17-year-olds works on a variety of conservation projects at two of Natural Lands’ nature preserves: Binky Lee and Bryn Coed, both located in Chester Springs. Projects include planting trees, trail maintenance and construction, invasive species removal, and various beautification projects. The program emphasizes conservation and allows participants to explore possible career opportunities in the field. Additionally, experiences on the preserves are designed to be metaphors for the real world. The YES program is run by Trellis for Tomorrow, a nonprofit that creates transformative, real-world opportunities for their program participants. Through the lens of sustainability, young people learn to make choices that foster health and well-being for themselves, their
communities, and the environment. During the most recent season of the YES program’s pilot period, the summer of 2019, participants endured hot temperatures and heavy rains. Connecting people - especially young people - to the outdoors has become an increasingly essential part of Natural Lands’ work. One of its goals is to cultivate the next generation of conservationists. Participants must apply to the program, and they receive a paycheck. According to Bob Steininger, the director of Chester County Youth Programs with Trellis for Tomorow, youths join YES to try something new, to have something to do for the summer or on the weekends in fall and spring, to meet people, or to learn more about environmental stewardship. Natural Lands is dedicated to preserving and nurturing nature’s wonders while creating opportunities in the outdoors for everyone. The land conservation organization, which is member supported, has preserved more than 125,000 acres, including 44 nature preserves totaling more than 23,000 acres. Five years ago, a campaign to express appreciation to members of law enforcement began with a few dozen cookies for a single sheriff’s office in Kentucky. Since then, Cookies for a Cop has delivered more than half a million baked goods nationwide, an accomplishment that extends into Chester County. It has also been expanded to include firefighters and some K-9 unis. On Oct. 17, Debi Raughley and her daughter-in-law, Erin Grandizio, made a delivery to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). It was one of multiple stops they made that day to demonstrate support and thanks for what first responders do each day. At CCSO, they dropped off several boxes of homemade cookies, pretzels, and dog treats. Raughley and Grandizio received assistance from Gabrielle, Raughley’s 2-year-old granddaughter. Not only did the youngster bond quickly with K-9 Melody, the courthouse comfort dog, but she also enjoyed identifying Melody in the K-9 calendar. The annual campaign, held in October,
