Library Sale To Feature Books And More
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Although a large selection of books will be featured at the upcoming fall book sale being held by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana, the event will feature additional items as well, including puzzles, games, gifts, recorded books and hundreds of DVDs and CDs.
The Friends’ fall book sale will take place in the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of the library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. Sale hours will be on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 1 to 7 p.m.; on Friday, Nov. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 8 a.m. to noon. Admission is free.
Organizers noted that all books will be reasonably priced. Special items, rare books and collectible titles will be individually priced.
There will be specials each day of the sale, as well as a bag sale. “We supply the bags, and only adult and young adult fiction and non-fiction titles are eligible for the bag sale,” noted Jeannette
Kolb, Friends vice president.
Also for sale will be leftover donations from the Friends’ yard sale held this past summer. The yard sale items will be located on a table in the community room next to the bookstore.
There will also be items suitable for gift giving for the upcoming holidays. “We will have lots of stocking stuffers,” said Joan Esworthy, Friends president. Gift items will include Beanie Babies, tote bags and paintings donated by local artist John Esworthy, as well as notecards featuring an illustration of the library.
Many of the books offered for sale will be sorted by popular authors, such as Danielle
Steele, John Grisham, James Patterson and David Baldacci. “We try to make it easy for people,” said Karen Woods, Friends treasurer, adding, “We will have children’s books and foreign language books. We have romance novels and large-print books and series specials.”
Many of the books offered for sale will be sorted by popular authors, such as Danielle Steele, John Grisham, James Patterson and David Baldacci.
There are special sections in the bookstore, such as the Education Corner, which offers nursing textbooks and books for homeschooled students, and a Kitchen Corner, where an assortment of cookbooks can be found.
Books in the Read Moore Book Store, which come from community donations and the library’s
collection, are displayed on unique shelving, including a canoe. There are also shelves that were made from a baby grand piano, a young adult section featuring books displayed on skateboards and bookshelves made from rain gutters. Since the library’s building once was home to a bank, shoppers can find rare and unique books in the “vault.”
The Read Moore Book Store is open during library hours: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The store is staffed and maintained by volunteers from the Friends group. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ReadMoore BookStore.
Additional volunteers are needed. Prospective members are invited to visit www.christianalibrary .org/friends for more information.

BY FRANCINE FULTON
Cub Scout Pack 20 of Atglen will present its second annual Turkey Trot, a 5K family fun run/walk, on Friday, Nov. 25, at the Octorara School District campus, 228 Highland Road, Atglen. Registration will be at 9 a.m., and the walk and run will follow at 9:30 a.m.
Last year’s event attracted approximately 40 participants. “Some signed up that day. It was beautiful weather,” said troop chairman Denim Kurtzhals, race coordinator. “There were both families and individual runners.”
In addition to being a fundraiser for the Cub Scouts, the event is designed as a way to collect canned goods for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC). “We are encouraging each participant to bring two canned goods,” said Kurtzhals.

Seminar topics will include how lifetime gifts differ from charitable bequests, how income tax deductions factor into charitable gifts, giving methods that defer donations but yield upfront benefits to donors, how to donate effectively using assets such as retirement benefits or life insurance and techniques that give donors the flexibility to change their mind about which organizations will receive their charitable donations.

Chester County Awards ARPA Funds
The Chester County commissioners approved the first round of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant recipients, with Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell, and Michelle Kichline stressing that the ARPA grants will aim to provide an equitable infusion of resources to meet local pandemic recovery needs and help accelerate the ongoing rebuilding of Chester County’s economy.
In the first round, 73 groups and organizations were selected and awarded ARPA grants totaling close to $40 million. Chester County received more than 300 ARPA applications for funding
requests from a wide array of municipalities, public authorities, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations that are located within or provide substantial service to the county. Application funding requests amounted to three times the total ARPA funds allocated to Chester County.
The grants were distributed as follows: $7.4 million for housing; $13 million for behavioral health; $1.4 million for workforce development; $1.6 million for community facilities and programs; $900,000 for child care; $1.6 million for food security; $8.7 million for public health; and $5.2 million
for public safety.
Chester County’s ARPA funding recommendations were made to the commissioners by a volunteer committee of 18 Chester County residents and 18 county staff members. The volunteers formed six independent review teams and developed a system that followed ARPA guidelines to review proposals and address each priority for ARPA funding. All ARPA funding applications recommended by independent review teams have also been reviewed by Susquehanna Accounting and Consulting Services (SACS) to ensure compliance with federal rules.
The county is continuing its due diligence in evaluating additional projects and expects to announce further awards at a later date, potentially before the end of the year.
A list of the first round of Chester County ARPA fund awards can be found at www.chesco.org/arpa.

Color 5K Raises Funds For COPE Program
Over 700 people joined the Chester County commissioners and the district attorney in Exton Park on the morning of Oct. 8 to run, walk and cheer on participants of the sixth annual Chester County Color 5K. Of those present at the event, more than 600 people took part in the timed race.
The event, initiated by Chester County Commissioner Michelle Kichline in 2016, raises funds to combat opioid and heroin addiction in Chester County. Over five years, the Color 5K raised nearly $200,000 for the county’s Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE) program, which addresses many aspects of substance use disorder. Organizers anticipate that a further $85,000 will be raised this year through sponsorship support, led by the Color 5K presenting sponsor the John R. Gailey III and JoEllen Berger Charitable Fund.
The COPE program provides 24/7 emergency room support for overdose survivors and their families at all hospitals in Chester County.
It also offers overdose prevention information and outreach to first responders, hospital staff, family members and friends, as well as expedited admission into detox and a review of all treatment options for overdose survivors who agree to
treatment. In her comments before the start of the Color 5K, Kichline noted that due to COPE, more than 880 people have received treatment after an overdose.

Thanksgiving Eve Service Planned
Calvary Monument Bible Church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, will hold a Thanksgiving Eve service on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. The service will offer an opportunity to pray, sing, give public testimony, and be challenged to cultivate a lifestyle that reflects a heart overflowing with gratitude.
The service is open to the public. Individuals unable to attend may submit a testimonial that is one or two sentences in length to pastor Chris at clenhart@calvarymonument.org or place their testimonial in the office drop box by Monday, Nov. 21. The service will not be livestreamed.
The Wolf Administration released its Litter Action Plan in 2021 in response to a 2019 Pennsylvania Litter Research Study, which found Pennsylvania had more than 500 million pieces of litter on its roadways. The action plan includes strategies for all Pennsylvanians to fight litter in their communities. As part of the plan, the state launched a public awareness campaign, PA Fights Dirty, this summer. The campaign calls upon Pennsylvanians to ensure every piece of their trash, regardless of size, is disposed of properly.
The DEP identifies many ways Pennsylvanians can fight litter at www.dep.pa. gov/litter. PennDOT provides many additional litter cleanup volunteer opportunities, including Adopt-A-Highway and Litter Brigades, at www .penndot.pa.gov.

YMCA Posts Opportunities To Help Others
The seven branches of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine are mobilizing members and supporters for a mission of kindness. Members and nonmembers are invited to stop by the membership desk at any YMCA of Greater Brandywine branch to pick up a Thanksgiving shopping list and shopping bag. They should then return the bag filled with the makings of a full Thanksgiving meal. Nonmembers who volunteer to donate a meal as part of the
Thanksgiving basket drive will receive an offer to join the YMCA without the joiner fee.
YMCA-organized missions of kindness will not stop with the Thanksgiving basket program. The Holiday Angels program, which connects donors with kids who otherwise will not receive holiday gifts, will kick off on Monday, Nov. 21.
Additionally, the Y partners annually with the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation to provide new winter coats to
children in need.

Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police
Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”
performance at the Grand Ole Opry will be on Saturday, Nov. 19.
United Way of Chester County’s Community Impact & Innovation Fund supports more than 60 programs and services throughout the community. Next year’s Live United in Music event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, at Penn Oaks Golf Club.

Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.
“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplinesmarching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”
Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are
(learning) and having fun at the same time.”
This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.
He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community.
“As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.
The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”
Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter -acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.
PennDOT Offers Winter Guidance
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently offered ways the public can prepare for the winter season. Members of the public can access travel information on nearly 40,000 state-maintained roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plowtruck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed. The information is provided via PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location technology, which uses units in the departmentowned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing a truck’s location.
To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, PennDOT offers operational information and traveler resources at www.penn dot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts.
Motorists should take the time now to ensure their vehicles are ready for winter and to know their own winter driving skills. Drivers should stock their vehicles with items needed for their health, safety, and comfort. Motorists should prepare for potential wintry weather by checking that they have supplies in their car before heading out. These supplies should include food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, a cellphone charger, hand or foot warmers, a windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies.
Drivers should also consider how to react to white-out conditions. In such conditions, drivers should slow down, not stop suddenly, activate their car’s hazard lights, and extend their following distance to prevent dangerous multiple-vehicle crashes.
In addition, snow squalls can often produce dangerous and deadly travel hazards on otherwise clear winter days. The National Weather Service now issues Snow Squall Warnings that alert drivers of whiteout conditions and slippery roadways, so motorists can avoid traveling directly into these areas.
If motorists encounter snow- or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid distractions.

Making Homemade Tomato Sauce
Tomato sauce is a staple in Italian cooking and other cuisines. Many families have special recipes for their own tomato sauces. Homemade tomato sauce adds zest to meals served during leisurely Sunday afternoons featuring pasta and meats.
Tomato-based sauces have many names among Italians.
“Sugo” is a word that broadly defines “sauce,” and can be applied to tomato-based varieties. “Ragú” implies that the sauce was reduced to obtain a more concentrated flavor profile after cooking it for hours.
Marinara originated in Naples and means “sailor-style.” It is a classic sugo made from a few
simple ingredients. An alternative to simmered sugo is salsa, which is made quickly with pureed tomatoes and does not contain meat or vegetables. It is ideal as a summer dressing for pasta and does not need to be cooked for long.
It is relatively easy to make homemade tomato sauce. The freshness of homemade sauce cannot be replicated - especially if the sugo is made with tomatoes plucked from a backyard garden. For those new to homemade sauce, this recipe for Sugo di Pomodoro from “Nick Stellino’s Family Kitchen” (G.P Putnam’s Sons) is a fine place to start.

Tomato Sauce
Sugo di Pomodoro (Tomato Sauce) (Makes 5 1/2 cups)
Ingredients:
6 tablespoons olive oil
6 whole garlic cloves, peeled 1 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 28-ounce can peeled Italian tomatoes with basil, drained and chopped, juice reserved (see tip below)
12 fresh basil leaves, or 1 1/4 teaspoons dried
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon salt (see tip below)
Directions:
1 - In a 3-quart saucepan,
frompg 9
heat the oil, garlic, onion, and red pepper flakes over medium-high heat. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring well. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 10 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, basil, oregano, and salt. Stir well and cook 5 minutes over medium heat.
2 - Add the reserved tomato juice and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3 - When the sauce has finished cooking, let it cool to room temperature, and then process to a smooth consis-
tency in a food processor. The color may change slightly in the processor; this is normal and will not affect the flavor. The sauce can be frozen for up to a month.
Chef’s tips: The best canned tomatoes to use in this sauce are those packed in Italy. American products tend to be too tart. If using American tomatoes, add 1/2 teaspoon sugar when cooking them.
This is a basic sauce used mainly to prepare other sauces. If it will be used over pasta, a bit more salt may need to be added, according to one’s taste.
