Pumpkin Olympics Will Mark 20 Years By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

A seasonal tradition is reaching its 20th anniversary this year. The Pumpkin Olympics will return on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, at Glen Run Valley View Farm in Atglen. Farm owners Jeff and Rhonda Stoltzfus have been putting leftover pumpkins to good use for the past two decades and raising funds for local organizations at the same time. The Pumpkin Olympics will offer all kinds of fun games, including competitions such as pumpkin throwing, pumpkin carrying and pumpkin races. A pumpkin pie eating contest and pumpkin carving demonstration will also be features of the day.

For those who would like to see pumpkins fly, there will be two pumpkin chucking teams on-site, demonstrating their catapult-style throwing machines that can send pumpkins flying across the farm fields. The Smokin Llamas and Tree Buckets teams will be on hand to chuck pumpkins and talk to visitors. “This is the fun event. We come here to try new things and spend our leftover pumpkins,” said Tom Bush of the Smokin Llamas. For those who would like pumpkins for holiday pies and Thanksgiving décor, there will be a booth where visitors can purchase the perfect pumpkin for baking or decorating. “The pumpkin crop was very good this year, though some of the largest ones didn’t quite See Pumpkin Olympics pg 8
