t’s not just veterans that can benefit from the local VFW post. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States is a nonprofit veterans organization that comprises veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces. T here are well over 5,000 local VFW posts worldwide. Locally, in Parkesburg at Post 4480, and in Gap at Post 7418, the whole community can get involved. The organization’s core values are to promote patriotism, honor military service and serve their communities, Post 7418 recently held a luncheon for PA Hero Walk, a 320-mile fundraising walk across the commonwealth. among other values. Both posts take the “serve their Gap holds food drives for the downfall, because we really need to communities” part very seriously. Christiana Fire Company is hoping that the community puts the pieces together to support the all-volunteer station. On Saturday, Nov. 14, the company will hold its first ever LEGO bingo event, a spin-off of previous themed bingos, most recently a YETI bingo. Held at the station, 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana, the doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and games will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. “We’re trying a different thing,” said Kim Moore, an organizer of the event, along with her daughter, Chelsey. “Trying to get a different crowd.”

Bling for Books Atglen Public Library (APL) will host its annual designer purse bingo on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Octorara Primary Learning Center (PLC), 87 Highland Road, Atglen, at 6 p.m., with the doors opening an hour prior. Designer purses and accessories from luxury brands like Michael Kors, Coach, Kate Spade, Vera Bradley and more will be available to win at the event. “ The designer purse bingo is one of our biggest fundraisers for the year,” explained library director Robbyn Kehoe. “We’ve been doing bingos for over 10 years. We started out with Longaberger baskets and switched to designer purse bingos nine or 10 years ago.” There is a cost to purchase tickets, which is slightly reduced if purchased by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, the day prior to the event. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.atglenpublic library.org/designer-bag-bingo/ page.html. There will be 14 games of regular bingo played, along with special games and an early bird game. Extra books and daubers will be for sale at the event. New for this year’s event, there will also be some prizes that are not designer items. Kehoe mentioned an Igloo cooler or a YETI cooler as potential prizes. There will also be a 50/50 drawing toward the conclusion of the evening. Additionally, there will be door prizes and themed baskets available to be won. Winners for door prizes will be drawn throughout the evening, while tickets to win the baskets are an additional purchase at the event. Kehoe mentioned tickets to the

Fulton Theatre as an example of what will be in the themed baskets. As in prior years, there will be a snack bar at the event, although it will not have any hot food this year. Attendees may bring their own snacks and beverages, within reason. Attendees are asked to be mindful of how much space they take up so as not to disturb those around them. Additionally, alcohol is strictly prohibited. “We will still have water, sodas, prepackaged snack items and baked goods,” Kehoe said. The APL holds designer purse bingos at least once a year, typically in the fall and late winter/ early spring. The library typically covers the cost of purchasing the designer items, but Kehoe said that it got a very generous donation to cover the cost this time around. All of the proceeds will benefit the APL, more specifically its vast array of programming for children, including weekday preschool

Chester County Connect Care (CCCC), a nonprofit medical care pregnancy center, will present its annual 5K run and Walk for Life on Saturday, Nov. 7, rain or shine, at Hibernia County Park, 1 Park Road, Coatesville. “This is one of the two main fundraisers that we host,” said Jessica Stoltzfus, marketing and event
coordinator for CCCC. “We have had around 250 participants in the past, and then spectators on top of that.” Race-day registration will open at 8 a.m., followed by a welcome at 8:45 a.m. The 5K, professionally timed by 2L Race Services, will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the fun run and walk. “It’s a road course,” Stoltzfus explained. “Part of it is paved, and some of it is gravel. It goes through Hibernia Park, so we’re hopeful that by November, leaves will be turning with color, and it will be just a pretty course to go through.” Medals will be awarded to the top three overall finishers, as well as the top three male and female finishers for each age group and the overall male and female winners of the 5K. Medals and prizes will be awarded at 10 a.m. Youngsters in strollers along with dogs on leashes are welcome to be part of the fun run/walk, which will not be timed and will cover less than a mile. There will be a “pup station” table set up with water bowls for four-legged friends at the event. Race snacks will be provided free of charge. “We will have some light refreshments for the runners,” Stoltzfus said. “We’re hoping to have coffee at the beginning.” There will be separate registration fees for the 5K and the fun walk and run. Participants in the races will be given a T-shirt included in the price of registration on a first-come, first-served basis. See CCCC pg 6

that the VFW is just a bar for veterans, and we’re not that. We’re so much more.” There are three different tiers of VFW memberships. Those who served in a combat theater are regular members who can go to any VFW post worldwide. Auxiliary members are family members of regular members, while anybody in the community can become a social member with a cursory background check and an application signed by a regular member of that post. Social members have virtually all of the same benefits as regular and auxiliary members, although they are limited to their local post. Post 4480 has around 700 to 800 members on the books, although only roughly half are active on a yearly basis. Post 7418 is slightly smaller with around 600 members and 105 regular members, about half of which are active. Parkesburg expressed that its overall numbers are lower, while Gap emphasized that its number of regular members has dropped as the health of Korea and Vietnam veterans falters. “We’re struggling here as far as getting younger members involved with the VFW, and struggling with board members,” said Larry Bills, quartermaster of Post 7418. “Most (board members) are elderly and not well, so that’s our biggest goal
Event Planned for Families A Growing Families Community Celebration will take place on Friday, Nov. 6, at the Oxford Presbyterian Church, 6 Pine St., Oxford. It will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. The event, hosted by the Maternal and Child Health Consortium and the office of state Sen. Carolyn Comitta, will include free games, story times, giveaway drawings, and activities for babies and children. Nearly 20 local community organizations will provide information on resources available to families and children in southern Chester County.
right now, trying to get some regular younger members in here.” “Dramatically lower,” said Heinemann, who was the first female regular member at Post 4480. “I think it’s a nationwide shift, and all private clubs are sort of suffering from it.” Post 4480 offers plenty of opportunities for recreation, both for members and general members of the community. The post has a chili and soup cook-off on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. It is free to enter, and there is a small cost to be a judge. The post also does bag bingos, the next of which will be held on Sunday, Nov. 15; the doors will open for the event at 1 p.m., and bingo games will start promptly at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online by searching for “Parkesburg VFW Post 4480” on Facebook. Post 7418 also does bingo on Wednesday nights and bands twice a month on Saturdays. A large source of revenue for the post is renting out its expansive pavilion space on the property’s rear; more information about the pavilion can be obtained by searching for the “Gap VFW Post 7418” group on Facebook. The Gap post will also be open on Thanksgiving for the whole community, serving a free holiday meal for everyone with turkeys that have been donated from the local area. Both posts have been creative in trying to get new people into the building. In May, Michael Kelly Smith, the co-founder and lead guitarist of glam metal band Britny Fox, did a meet and greet and record show at Parkesburg. Kelly Smith, who has lived in Parkesburg for more than a decade, has family members who served in the military who are members at Post 4480. “The feedback has been really outstanding,” Kelly Smith said prior to the show. “We’re just trying to raise every dollar that we can.” “It was really neat to just have a different crowd and just do a different thing here,” Heinemann said. “I think we will continue to do that.” The VFW’s biggest expenses are about what you would expect. and bartenders need to be paid, and the lights need to be kept on. Post 4480 is also one of the only posts in the area that still has an Honor Guard, teams of volunteers that assist with veterans’ funerals and ceremonies. It is a major expense for the post, but an important piece of what the post does for the community. “I get calls from as far as Philly to do Honor Guard stuff, which is sort of crazy that it has fallen off,”Heinemann said. “That’s why we’re here, to support veterans. Whether they’re alive or supporting their families. That’s our mission; the other stuff is fluff to me.” The VFW needs support from the community in its mission to return the favor, all while providing a safe haven for those who fought for our freedom. “It’s just nice to have somebody that has shared interests and backgrounds,” Heinemann said. “That’s our primary mission, to support veterans.” Located at 406 W. Fourth Ave., Parkesburg, Post 4480 can be reached at 610-857-1504 or vfwpost4480@ gmail.com. Post 7418 is located at 4988 Lincoln Highway, Gap, and can be reached at 717-442-9976. “Come in and see what we’re about,” Bills said. “Maybe volunteer a bit of your time.”

Chelsey and her fiancé, Jonathan, are LEGO lovers. Chelsey said they got the idea from attending a similar event at a fire company out of the area. “It’s how I decorate my house,” she said. “We went to that bingo from another company like two hours away, and it was packed solid. I don’t know what kind of profit they yielded, but we thought it was just something different. It involves kids and adults, so we’re going to try it, see how it goes.” The main attraction will be the LEGO Titanic set. Released in 2021, the behemoth set features more than 9,000 pieces and is over 4 feet long when fully constructed. It is the largest set that LEGO has ever released, and it retails at $679.99. “The Titanic is a lot of people’s holy grail of LEGOs,” Chelsey said. “My fiancé and I bought one when we were in Disney. ...
