Bellevue Presbyterian to Offer First Trunk or Treat BY LOGAN MOYER

Bellevue Presbyterian Church is switching it up this fall. The church, located at 810 Newport Ave., Gap, has traditionally held a fall festival for the community. This year, the church is switching to a trunk or treat event at the church on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Along with the trunk or treat, the event promises food trucks, as well as plenty of candy and fun. “It’s going to be our first year for the trunk or treat,” said event organizer Amanda Doutrich. “We’re done fall festivals for the last seven years ... we’re hoping to bring families into the church, and (the fall festivals) have not, which is unfortunate. But a lot of people in our area here in Gap, we have a lot of Mennonite Amish, and they already have churches that they go to.” Individuals, organizations and businesses in the community are welcomed to design a festive, themed trunk for the event. The church will provide candy for the trunks, but does ask that those who participate keep their trunks festive and in the spirit of the event. A claw machine will also be at the event. Participants should be set up by 4:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Those interested should call the church office at 717442-4077 by Thursday, Oct. 22. Doutrich said that the church is hoping to have at least 20 trunks participate. Free food from local food trucks is another highlight of the See Trunk or Treat pg 9

and your talents. We just want to connect people and celebrate that. (Faithful Give) really emphasizes the versatility of the Christian community.” From midnight on Sunday, Oct. 18, to midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 20, interested individuals can direct financial donations to Faithful Give’s general fund by going to www.faithful give.org/donate. People can also donate funds in person at Faithful Give’s prayer breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, or at Faithful Give’s Celebration Expo from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. “The breakfast is a wonderful opportunity to learn about all that God is doing in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “Most of the kingdom causes are represented, and you can learn about their ministries, know those people and pray for them. One of the neat things we’ve seen is the networking that has come out of it. The Celebration Expo is a full, family event. Families get a chance to spend a night out. Last year, my favorite thing was

and Glass Museum, the W heeling Island casino and race track, and other attractions. Separate fees have been set for single- and double-occupancy rooms. For more information, contact Doris Warfel at 717-872-4474.

seeing how many families came out to the expo and learned about the missions.” This year, more than 150 Lancaster County-associated ministries, nonprofits and social service organizations have registered to be a part of Faithful Give. The funds that they receive allow those organizations to provide broader, deeper and more impactful services and programs, as well as to reach more individuals in need. “They are people from organizations who love God and love Lancaster County,” said Kieffer, a resident of Manheim Township. “They’re people who make Lancaster County a great place to live and raise a family. They’re people who

have inherited a great legacy and want to pass that legacy on to the next generation.” Following some exploratory research, the initial Faithful Give event was staged in 2023. Over the last three years, the fundraising and giving initiative has raised more than $4.4 million for the underresourced. “Every year we’ve set a goal and God has surpassed it. This year, we’ll see what God will do,” said Kieffer. “When we started, I wasn’t sure it was going to fly. Certainly, God has done more than we have asked, thought or imagined. It has served our community. It’s provided connection, advocacy and celebration. It’s just been a blessing.”

It’s almost like the old chicken and the egg routine. What’s unclear is if Lancaster County is so generous because there are so many great causes out there, or if there are so many great causes because Lancaster County residents are so altruistic. “Lancaster County is a frugal county,” said David Kieffer, pastor of Ephrata Reformed Presbyterian Church and president of Faithful Give. “Residents are generous, but they’re not foolish with their donations. They want good return on their investments. They want to donate to causes that are aligned with their values. They want to steward their finances well, and Faithful Give exists to help with that.” Faithful Give is one of Lancaster County’s most far-reaching and well-organized giving campaigns. The upcoming Faithful Give features a pair of interactive in-person October events, but 90 percent of the donations received by the facilitating agent comes through online gifts. The received donations are distributed to nonprofits, missions and causes that are physically located in Lancaster County and benefit its citizens. “Faithful Give is designed to connect generous donors to kingdom causes in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “But Faithful Give is not just a financial giving event. It’s a celebratory advocacy event. Every ministry knows their needs and opportunities better than we do. On our website, each of the participating ministries has a page that tells what the money will go toward. “We really want to expand people’s understanding of generosity,” added Kieffer. “Generosity is not just about giving your money; it’s about giving your heart

chapter holds annual golf outing, bingos and more similar fundraisers. This year, wreaths will be laid locally and nationwide on Saturday, Dec. 19. Locally, the day will begin with an opening ceremony at Pequea Valley Secondary School, 164 S. New Holland Road, Kinzers. “ We have to purchase all the wreaths, so that’s quite an undertaking for that many wreaths,” Plum said. “We’ve kind of just grown from when we started.” At the craft show, a 50/50 drawing and gift card drawing is also planned. Vendors will be selling a variety of items, including candles, woodworking items, pet treats, kitchen items and more. “We have maybe three that are direct sales that

don’t make their stuff, but the majority are makers,” Plum said. “ T he public can come and suppor t small businesses, star t their Christmas shopping and maybe avoid the mall.” With the move to The Factory, attendees to the craft show are asked to bring items to support its food market. Condiments are currently a big need, including mustard, salt, pepper, pickles, olives and other items of that variety. No ticket is needed to attend the event. The Pequea Valley Fire Depar tment (PVFD) is making its dreams a reality. Formed as a consolidation of Kinzer Fire Company and Gordonville Fire and EMS in 2023, the department has long been hoping to move its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training in-house. That idea came to fruition last year, when the department graduated its first Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class that was trained in-house. “Prior to that, we had been under another training institute,” said Abbey Beiler, EMS education coordinator at PVFD. “Myself, with some others on the leadership team, we took about nine months to write all the policies and procedures.” Its first class of 23 students graduated earlier this year. Many have already starting working as either a volunteer, part-time or fulltime EMT, some even within PVFD. The department had assistance from New Holland EMS in starting its program; Beiler noted the strength and success of New Holland’s EMT program. “I have a contact over there that helped us with some of that, as well,” she said. “Then the state had to come out and evaluate our clinical site, and

T he Pennsylvania Department of Militar y a n d Ve t e r a n s A f f a i r s (DMVA) has announced that its Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its first session of 2027, which will begin in January. A cornerstone of DMVA’s o u t re a c h , K S C A s e e k s to help teens who are in jeopardy of not graduating on time or dropping out of school. The program provides teens with a second chance at obtaining their basic education. KSCA is centered around the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program’s core components: leadership, self-discipline, job skills, health and hygiene, values of community ser vice and civic duty, physical fitness, and responsibility to build a better life. There is no tuition cost to at te n d , a n d m e a l s , housing, uniforms, and school supplies are provided at no charge. To meet growing demand for the program, the 2026-27 state budget increased funding for KSC A by $80,000. The December 2025 graduating class was the largest KSC A class to date with 75 graduates, and enrollment is expected to grow to more than 100 cadets in the coming years. KSCA is open to 16- to 18-year-old Pennsylvania residents who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating. Applicants must be willing to be drug free, be free of felony convictions, and voluntarily commit to the program. The program lasts for five and one-half months as a residential phase and 24 months of mentorship by academy staff members back in youths’ home communities. Graduates work to receive high school credits, credentials, or a GED. KSCA also is increasing in the number of graduates who earn their diploma through Act 158 legislation that allows for alternative pathways to graduation. When people arrive at the event, they’ll get a ticket that will provide them with free food from the food trucks, Doutrich explained. “ We have a nice meal waiting for them,” she said. “Either you get pulled pork or brisket, or you get the chicken dish. They’ll get a ticket, and then (the food trucks) will tell us at the end how much we owe them.” Attendees at the event are welcomed and encouraged to come in costumes but are asked not to wear masks. Additionally, the church asks that attendees avoid wearing scary cos-

tumes. On the day of the event, the trunk or treat will start at 4:30 p.m.; food trucks will arrive around 5 p.m. Members from the greater community are invited, but those who do not already attend Bellevue Presbyterian are asked to have obtained the state’s child abuse history clearances. In the past, the fall festival drew around 300 people, Doutrich said. More information about the church and its events can be found by visiting www.bellevueepc.org. The church worships at 10 a.m. on Sundays and holds Sunday school one hour prior. Services are streamed online. The church also offers gender-based ministry, young adult groups and mission trips.

The drive to obtain items for the event started on Sept. 20 and will run through Tuesday, Oct. 13. Donations are accepted at the church at any time.
