t feels like summer just ended, but cold weather is right around the corner. Warm winter items, including coats, hats and gloves, will be given out at IMPACT Church, 101 E. First Ave., Parkesburg, on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 to 11 a.m. Anyone in the community is invited to visit the church that day and pick up winterwear free of charge. Men’s, women’s and children’s coats will be available in various sizes and styles. Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be blind? The Paradise Township Lions Club’s upcoming ninth annual Dinner in the Dark fundraiser might help you answer that question. Attendees at the dinner are tasked with a unique eating experience, given the opportunity to eat while under different levels of vision impairment. “What was a surprise to me when I started this Dinner in the Dark was that I assumed that people with vision issues were blind;

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
STOREWIDE SAVINGS
Penn Rise Advisors will host its annual Bonfire and Brews Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 4 to 10 p.m. at its office, 3000 Lincoln Highway, Parkesburg. This year will be Penn Rise Advisors’ fifth edition of the festival, which was previously known as the Fire and Wine Festival. Proceeds from the festival benefit two local fire companies, the Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD) in Parkesburg and the Sadsburyville Fire Company. “It’s an interesting event, because we’re not an organized nonprofit,” said Candice Klingmann of Penn Rise Advisors. “It’s basically a bunch of people in the community getting together and making it happen.” There is a cost to purchase tickets to the event. A ticket provides entry, as well as a door prize entry and one Suburban Brewing Company specialty draft if purchased by Thursday, Oct. 15. Tickets will be sold at the door for a slightly higher price as long as capacity limits allow. The event is weather dependent. Ticket sales will not be refunded. The event is limited to people age 18 and over; IDs will be checked on-site. No outside food or alcohol is permitted, and no animals are welcome, outside of certified service animals. Food vendors will be available at the event, including the Suburban Brewing food truck. Sadsburyville Fire Company will also have a tent, selling chili and corn bread. Two musical outfits will perform See Bonfire pg 4

and race track remained largely a “potential” rather than a long-lasting landmark. It fell victim to the financial panic of 1893, w h i c h h a l t e d l e i s u re industry construction across Pennsylvania. While Mr. Talbot’s resort never materialized, remains of the now-overgrown race track were still discernible into the 21st century. Local lore states that those abandoned “cottages” did not remain empty for long. That section of the Welsh Mountains had long been a haven for those whom society had cast off; Indigenous people, free Black persons, runaway slaves, drifters, and outlaws moved into the abandoned buildings that had been built for that “resort.” The track itself continued as an informal race course long after.

Some of those who could scrape together enough cash actually bought land, often with the “resort” home included. Unlicensed “businesses” grew up around it: whiskey stills and bars, as well as “welcome houses.” Valley people might not employ the mountain people, but they would take advantage of their illegal businesses. Fast forward to the 1960s, and the press designated the area as the “worst slum in Lancaster County.” Social workers came looking to improve the lives of the mountain people; a medical clinic was built. “Outside” saw cheap land ripe for development. Trees grew on the racetrack. By 2026, the old racecourse is just a memory, a story told to get attention at family gatherings.
