Several years ago, three couples founded the Soup, Sandwich, and Talk events that were held in Gap. Each program included a variety of free soups and sandwiches with a short sermon. The programs were the predecessor to the creation of WordUp Community Ministries, a local church.

“Soup, (Sandwich), and Talk started five years ago,” said Buck Mowday, who founded the events along with his wife, Verna; Rodney and Stephanie Smoker; and Lloyd and Gail Murphy. Buck recalled that the evening program stopped when WordUp Community Ministries, moved into a new facility at Dutchland Inc.,

160 Route 41, Gap. “We are getting back to our roots (now),” said Buck. “We want to include the community. This is open to the public, and it doesn’t cost a dime.”

The

Octorara Area School District inducted two new members into the Octorara Hall of Fame on Sept. 23 during a ceremony held at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. The inductees were Joshua Althouse, a member of the Class of 2006, and Catherine Imms, a member of the Class of 2010, who was inducted posthumously.

Welcoming attendees to the 30th annual induction ceremony was Julia Roth, senior class president.

“These inductees have shown the world what the Octorara Brave can

achieve. They set an example for generations to come,” Julia said, encouraging her classmates to view the Hall of Fame plaques displayed in the school hallway.

Yony Gonzalez, vice president of the Student Council, inducted Althouse and provided his biographical information. Althouse attended James Madison University in Virginia, where he received a master’s degree in public administration and a Bachelor of Arts in political science. After working for the United States government for seven years, he started working for

Facebook’s Meta in the external affairs department in 2018.

Althouse addressed the Octorara students, asking them to always express appreciation to their teachers. “I got to serve in the United States House of Representatives working for Congressman Joe Pitts, who represented this area. I worked for Speaker Paul Ryan, and through that job, I got to engage with two presidential administrations,” he said. “The teachers in this school, the mentors and coaches should be up here (on stage) with me. They are the reason I was able to do anything beyond these walls.”

The sixth annual Chester County Color 5K run/walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8. This year’s event, the sixth annual, will be held on the Chester Valley Trail and will start and end in Exton Park, 122 Church Farm Lane, Exton. This is a new venue this year; previously, the fundraiser took place at Everhart Park in West Chester.

Color Run

The timed 5K is open to both runners and walkers. On-site registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the race start at 9 a.m. Medals will be given out for the first-, second- and third-place finishers in various age categories.

Participants will be doused in different-colored powder at the start of the race and along the course. “At different points throughout the race course, there are color stations and people will be doused in color as they run past,” explained Rebecca Brain,

Chester County public information officer. “It’s cornstarch and completely biodegradable, and it washes out.”

There will be an option for runners and walkers who choose not to participate. “Runners who don’t want to interact with the color can take a route around the color stations that allows them not to be sprayed with powder,” noted Brain.

Participants will travel along the Chester Valley Trail through Exton Park and the neighboring corporate center. “It’s a two-lap course, and those who are walking can just walk one lap if they prefer,” Brain pointed out. “We will have the fire police out there to control traffic.”

The presenting sponsor for the 2022 Chester County Color 5K is the John R. Gailey III and JoEllen Berger Charitable Fund. Funds generated through this year’s Color 5K will support Chester County’s Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE) program.

Through the COPE program, overdose survivors who are being treated in emergency rooms at any hospital in Chester County can meet with a certified recovery specialist within an hour of entering the ER. The peer specialist is available to speak with the overdose survivor and provide personal support and a direct connection to treatment and recovery services.

COPE peer specialists also work with the overdose survivor’s family and friends to advise them on how to navigate insurance coverage, ways to get treatment and how to obtain and use naloxone. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“The purpose of the Color 5K is to raise funds to tackle

opioid and heroin addiction with a family-friendly event but also to reduce the stigma of substance use disorder,” said Brain.

Previous Chester County Color 5K events have attracted thousands of participants and supporters and, combined, have raised more than $200,000. “We have everybody. We have serious runners,

fun runners and people of all ages,” Brain noted.

For more information or to register for the 2022 Chester County Color 5K, visit www.chesco.org/color5K.

Sponsorship opportunities are available at various levels for organizations and individuals.

Those interested in sponsoring the event can contact Brain at rbrain@chesco.org.

Inducting Catherine and reciting her biography was senior Mackenzie Muldoon, a member of the Student Council. Catherine was salutatorian, Student Council president and editor of the school newspaper. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history in 2014. She was able to transition from a parttime development coordinator position at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House into a full-time position. Her job was to secure funds for the facility, which provides housing for the families of seriously ill children who are receiving care at local hospitals.

Catherine was diagnosed with leukemia in 2017 and passed away at the age of 26 in February of 2018. “Her life was short but powerful and deserves to be remembered,” said Mackenzie.

Accepting Catherine’s award on her behalf was her

sister Rosemary Shirey. Also in attendance were Catherine’s parents, Dan and Peggy. Peggy held a photo of her daughter during the ceremony.

Rosemary spoke of Catherine’s volunteer work in the Philadelphia community, including volunteering to help refugee women learn English and making homemade baked goods for the homeless. “She was a person who sought to channel her energy to help people around her and was well loved by those whose path she crossed,” said Rose. “She was an example of courage, confidence and kindness. Had Catherine had the chance, I have no doubt that her contributions to the community would continue to grow.”

Closing remarks were provided by Jonathan Propper, principal. The Octorara chorale was also on hand at the event to sing the school’s alma mater and “The StarSpangled Banner.”

CELEBRATE NATIONAL NEWSPAPER WEEK!

The Theater of the Seventh Sister (TSS) will present a production of “Sleepy Hollow” at the Historic Rock Ford and Theater, with opening night taking place on Thursday, Oct. 13. Two productions will be held on each Thursday and Friday at 7 and 8:30 p.m., and the final performance will be on Friday, Nov. 4.

The play will be performed on the first floor of the Hand Mansion, which will be altered to portray the Van Tassel family home in Washington Irving’s famous tale. Audience members will follow characters such as Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel through each room of the mansion as the story is told. “We have a dream cast this year; everyone who is portraying their roles are very fine actors that are physically and vocally suited to their roles,” said Cynthia Charles, artistic and managing director of TSS.

Charles became the artistic and managing director for TSS in 2014 and has assisted with several productions such as “Julius Caesar,” “Tales From the Caretakers” and “Emma the Matchmaker.” Prior to her role with the organization, Charles performed in multiple plays in the area. “I love the quality of the plays we perform; they’re things you don’t generally see elsewhere. We always love collaborating with Historic Rock Ford and working with artists ranging from emerging playwrights to veteran actors,” said Charles.

TSS was founded in 1989

and has offered several shows to the area over the years, many of which have been held at Historic Rock Ford. The organization does not operate out of any one venue; past collaborations have been held at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, Tellus360 and Ephrata Performing Arts Center. The upcoming production of “Sleepy Hollow” will feature primarily local talent, which TSS has relied on following the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of many theaters. How To Maintain An Older Vehicle

New cars have been costly for quite some time, but those costs have spiked considerably since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. That unprecedented rise may lead many motorists to wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles. According to data from Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive, the average cost of a new car in September 2021 was just over $45,000. That marked a $3,000 increase from June 2021 and a $5,000 increase from the end of 2020.

Drivers who may not be able to afford the cost of a new vehicle can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.

- Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that

infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.

- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years.

Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.

- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were

brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.

- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tuneups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.

The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.

CARE

Addressing Headlight Glare

Headlight glare becomes dangerous when visibility is impaired to a point where the risk of accidents is heightened. Glare is a growing problem for many modern drivers due to the increased use of light emitting diodes in headlights.

Driving at night is challenging because pedestrians, cars and other obstacles are difficult to see once the sun sets, and headlight glare can cause further problems. A study from the U.S. Department of Transportation found that 88% of drivers noticed LED and HID headlight glare. While LED lights may not actually be brighter, their “cool” color temperature can make them appear so. Studies have found that blue and white light tends to hit people’s eyes harder, especially at night.

In addition, human eyes do not adjust to changes in lighting very quickly, according to Pierre Paul Driving School in New York City. The older a person gets, the longer his or her eyes take to adjust to changes in lighting. In fact, it can take up to seven seconds to recover from the blinding glare of headlights. That’s

enough time to swerve off the road or potentially hit something. While glare can be problematic, drivers can take steps to make nighttime driving safer.

- Clean the windshield. Dirt and grime found on the windshield can refract light and make glare worse. Therefore, clean all windows and mirrors thoroughly, inside and out.Repair scratches and cracks. Glare can be exacerbated by any imperfections in the windshield. Repair cracks or scratches promptly.

- Get a vision and health check. Changes to vision can impact how glare affects certain individuals. Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Eye shape changes, including a condition called keratoconus, can affect vision.

Cataracts and diabetes can also impair vision. Visit a primary care physician as well as an eye doctor to check for conditions that can make night vision worse.

- Change your line of sight.

Library Friends Set Book Sale

- Get glare-resistant coatings on eyeglasses. Speak with an optician about eyeglasses with a coating that can reduce the amount of glare. VisionCenters.com says standard plastic lenses reflect around 8% of the light that reaches glasses, while high-index lenses reflect up to 12% of available light. Anti-glare coating allows 99.5% of available light to reach the eyes, essentially eliminating glare. Those who don’t wear eyeglasses can purchase special anti-glare glasses to wear in high-glare conditions, such as when looking at computer and phone screens.

- Flip your rearview mirror to night mode, if you have this option. This setting will make it appear as though lights coming from behind are dimmer.

- Take breaks. When glare makes driving difficult, take a break to help your eyes recover.

These are some of the steps people may take when glare becomes problematic while driving at night.

Soup, Sandwich, And Talk

With that goal in mind, a special anniversary Soup, Sandwich, and Talk will be held at the Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap, on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. “We will have free soup and sandwiches and water,” said Buck, who noted the soups would be served cafeteria-style from slow cookers.

Buck said that all six founders will be there to discuss how Soup, Sandwich, and Talk started and where WordUp is now. “It (will be) very casual and relaxed,” said Buck. “We believe the best way to communicate to people about Christ is through relationships.”

As leader of WordUp, Buck noted that his lifetime Scripture, which is Mark 10:45, helps

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.

It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No,

they probably won’t get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.

In the past year the publisher of this newspaper, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has featured more than 1,500 front-page articles benefiting more than 1,000 local nonprofit organizations in Lancaster, Chester, Berks, York, and Dauphin counties. Those numbers don’t take into account the thousands of press releases that make their way into our papers each year.

With all the talk about social media, why do we continue to publish free community newspapers? It’s who we are and who we’ve been for nearly 70 years. We live here, too, and we want to keep our communities thriving as much as you do.

If you know of an organization or individual making a positive impact on your community, contact us at news@engleonline.com or visit https://townlively.com/event -submission to submit an event.

Watershed Steward Program Launched

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB), with funding from the Department of Environmental Protection’s Coastal Resources Management, has announced its new Waterway Steward Program, developed with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The program’s purpose is to engage Pennsylvania water trail users in community science and build long-term stewardship of water trails while providing valuable data to tell the story about litter in and along Pennsylvania’s waterways.

statewide Litter Action Plan.

Being a waterway steward involves collecting litter and stream health data when the steward is recreating in or near water. When they are finished, they can dispose of the litter properly and report the data collected to KPB. Stewards can choose where they want to clean, and it can be a different waterway each time.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful received a $40,000 Coastal Zone Grant from the DEP Coastal Resources Management Program to establish the Waterway Steward Program and facilitate cleanups in the Delaware Estuary. DEP is supporting this innovative program to turn residents who use Pennsylvania’s streams, rivers, and lakes into stewards of these waters, helping to document and reduce the trash pollution that threatens water quality for people and aquatic life.

DEP and other state agencies are working with KPB to foster littering prevention and litter reduction initiatives through a

The Waterway Steward program is geared toward water trail users, anglers, outdoor and waterway enthusiasts, and all those who care about the health, safety, and quality of Pennsylvania’s waterways. To be a waterway steward, individuals must be at least age 18. Stewards can conduct cleanups individually or organize their family and friends to join a cleanup.

Participants are encouraged to share stories online. KPB will compile and share results with the larger community and use this data to further educate Pennsylvanians about the importance of keeping waterways clean.

Cats have a special place in the hearts of millions of people. The personalities of cats, coupled with their compact size, can make them suitable pets for a variety of homes.

Individuals who adopt cats may want to take every step they can to help the cat feel comfortable in its new home. The length of time it will take for the cat to adjust to a new environment depends on the cat’s temperament, but the following tips can help.

If the cat has a favorite toy, carrier, or scratching post, the new owner should bring the familiar item along. Moving something into the home that has the animal’s smell may help it to adjust more quickly.

One room should be selected as a home base. Introducing the cat to the entire home and all its residents at the same time can

be overwhelming. Rather, a small room in the home, such as an office or laundry space, should be designated as the cat’s initial residence.

With the door closed, this small space can be comforting and let the cat learn the smells and sounds of the home before it ventures into other areas. Owners should remember to visit often and provide plenty of love and affection as tolerated by the cat.

It is important to avoid lots of commotion in the household. A cat’s early days in a new home are not the time for the owners to host a house party. Stressors like large crowds, increased foot traffic, and kids’ play dates should be removed. Loud sounds and sudden movements can put cats on edge.

As the cat is invited into other areas of the home, people should let the cat set the

pace and resist the urge to pull the pet out from a hiding place under a bed or couch. The cat will start to venture out when it is ready.

Children should initially be kept away from the cat. Young children tend to be energetic and jerky, which is not a good mix with a skittish cat. The cat should be introduced to children in short sessions with careful supervision so the cat does not get hurt and children are not scratched or bitten if the cat becomes scared.

Likewise, existing pets should be introduced gradually. A dog should be kept confined until the cat feels secure in the home. Two altered cats can become friends in the same home, but older cats often are more accepting of kittens than other adults.

As the cat adjusts to its new home, owners should continue to provide it with a quiet

area. According to cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy, cats need solitude and quiet time. A box or basket lined with soft, washable bedding in a corner can serve as a place for a cat to retire to.

Cats are happiest when they have had time to get used to their new home. Once an adoption takes place, owners may follow the aforementioned tips to help the cat become comfortable in its new environment.

Chester County government’s continued advancement in digital technology has earned a top-10 placement among America’s more than 3,000 counties. The Center for Digital Government (CDG) and National Association of Counties (NACo) have announced Chester County as a Digital Counties Survey Award recipient in the category for counties that have a population of 500,000 or more people. The award recognizes best technology practices, including initiatives that save tax dollars, boost transparen-

cy, focus citizen engagement, and improve cybersecurity.

The Digital Counties Survey, conducted by CDG and developed in partnership with NACo, identifies the best technology practices among U.S. counties, including initiatives that streamline delivery of government services, encourage collaboration, enhance cybersecurity, and apply innovative and emerging technologies to county priorities. The judges noted Chester County’s emphasis on automating systems through cloud-based solutions, allowing easier and

faster processes for residents while also improving the efficiency of staff time.

Additional priorities by Chester County IT staff include research into artificial intelligence (AI) processes that automatically respond to users interested in county programs and services and an electronic signature process to expedite transactions and ensure security for contracts and grants.
