WFCS Sets Run, Auction

Aweekend of activities has been planned at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10 and 11. Events will include the seventh annual fun run and the 44th annual auction. Community members are welcome to participate.

Events will begin on Oct. 10 with the fun run, during which participants will be invited to walk or run 1 mile around the WFCS campus. Registration will open at 4:45 p.m., and the run will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Last year, participants were doused with color along the course. This year, it will be bubbles. “You get the bubbles at the start and the whole time throughout, and then we will have a big bubble machine at the end, which is supposed to produce

Police To Host Trunk or Treat

Children will be able to travel from vehicle to vehicle collecting candy and treats during a Trunk or Treat being presented by the Christiana Borough Police Department on Friday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m. The event will also feature free food, giveaways and marshmallow roasting, followed by an outdoor movie at the Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokom Ave.

mass amounts of bubbles - almost like a foam,” explained Jaquelynn Hoopes of Gap, who is co-chairing the event for the first time, along with Amanda Malavolta of Coatesville.

The fun run is open to people of all ages, especially families

A vendor event titled “Fall Through Time: Crafts, Crops, Creations & History” will be presented by the newly formed Parkesburg Historical Society along with the Parkesburg Historical Commission on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Parkesburg Borough Hall, 315 W. First Ave. The event will also include an open house at the Parkesburg Historical Society and Parkesburg Historical Commission’s History Room, which is also located at borough hall.

with children. “It stays all on our campus. It goes from the soccer field around the playground, and it loops back to the soccer field again,” said Hoopes, noting that more than 100 participants took part in the event last year. “We get a lot of families that do it together.

Activities will take place in the library parking lot and across the street at Christiana Borough Hall, 10 W. Slokom Ave. “We mostly are in the library parking lot and Chantry Place (located next to the library),” explained Christiana Borough Police Officer Brian Smyth. “We usually shut the street down so people can walk back and forth.”

He noted that about 15 vehicles took part in the event last year. Local first responders, including Christiana Ambulance and Christiana Fire Company, also brought emergency vehicles to the event. “Some people go all out,” Smyth said, adding that organizers hope to attract event more vehicles this year. “Last year, someone brought in a trailer and decorated it. It’s whatever they want to do.”

Other trunks at the event included one decorated with a “Jurassic Park” theme, a spider and web, a giant lighted pumpkin and a witch’s cauldron.

Free food items that will be served throughout the night will include pizza, pretzels and candy, along with beverages. “Wawa is going to bring hoagies this year,” Smyth said. “We bring in an outdoor propane fire kit for marshmallow roasting and

It says run, but obviously you could walk or jog. A lot of people have younger kids with strollers, and they do the course with the kids. It’s just a big family gathering.”

There will also be an auction preview on Oct. 10, so people can see all of the items that will be up for bids the next day. Also featured will be a bake sale and a sale of gift cards. “Whatever gift cards we get donated, we just sell at face value,” Hoopes noted.

Live and silent auctions will be held on Oct. 11 Doors will open at 8 a.m. Bidding will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Auction items will include home decor, outdoor equipment, themed gift baskets and sports memorabilia.

Also up for bidding as part of the live auction will be teacher experiences where teachers may offer to take children on an outing or provide a pizza lunch at school. Students also create artwork for the auction. “Each grade - preschool through high school - contributes. Most of it is something they do in art class,” said Malavolta. “The middle school will have a giant outside Jenga, and they are going to decorate all of the blocks. Kindergarten is doing a mirror, and around the outside of the mirror they’re putting their fingerprints to make butterflies, caterpillars and flowers.”

WFCS students will also help with the auction, serving as runners for the auctioneer, Dave Longenecker.

There will also be an opportunity for people to win a grand prize through a random drawing. The three-pack prize includes a small chest freezer, a 36-inch Blackstone grill and a $300 gift card to a local butcher shop.

A Kids Zone child care area with games and face painting will be open during the live auction for children age 3 through third grade.

Breakfast sandwiches and lunch items, including homemade soup, will be served during the auction.

Both Hoopes and Malavolta, who are cousins, are excited to be first-time chairs of the fun run and auction. Both attended WFCS and now have children attending the school.

“We and our parents used to help out with the auction, so its like a full-circle moment,” said Malavolta. “This is the first year that both of our kids are in school and we helped take over the auction.”

“It’s just cool to be able to be a part of it, but in a different way,” added Hoopes. “All of our kids are growing up the same way we did, and then hopefully their kids will be able to come here. It’s a generational thing.”

Proceeds from the auction, food sales and fun run registrations will benefit the school’s operating budget. WFCS offers a Little Falcons Preschool for youngsters ages 3 to 5, a full-day kindergarten program and classes for students through 12th grade. WFCS, founded in 1941, serves students from the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley, Solanco and Unionville-Chadds Ford area school districts. Busing is provided, and financial aid is available.

Caring for a Vehicle’s Exterior

Drivers go to great lengths to ensure that they take good care of what’s under the hood of their vehicles. But it’s equally beneficial to tend to the exterior of a vehicle, including its paint job.

According to Popular Mechanics, oxidation can adversely affect iron-based metals. That can put vehicles in jeopardy and take significant time off their life expectancy. The good news is that rust and other issues that can affect a vehicle’s paint job and appearance are typically avoidable. That should be music to the ears of new vehicle owners, who likely need no reminder of the sizable financial investment required to drive off the lot with a fresh set of wheels. Drivers who want their cars and trucks to maintain their looks over the long haul can consider these simple strategies to protect their paint jobs.

vehicle’s exterior, potentially jeopardizing the paint job. Routine car washes can prevent such damage and help a car look like it was just driven off the lot.

• Wax the exterior of the vehicle. The automotive experts at Carfax report that waxing is a significant and simple way to protect vehicle paint. Carfax notes that certain paste waxes contain mild abrasives that help remove fine scratches from painted surfaces. Wax also can protect paint jobs from fading related to exposure to ultraviolet rays. That’s especially noteworthy for drivers who do not routinely park their cars in a garage.

rays and the elements and may reduce the need for more frequent trips to the car wash.

• Park in the shade, but choose spots wisely. Parking in the shade may protect vehicles from the ultraviolet rays of the sun, but it’s important that drivers pick the right shady spot to park their cars and trucks. A shade tree might seem like a great ally to vehicle owners, but if birds nest or rest in the tree, drivers could be exposing their cars to bird droppings. Bird droppings are high in uric acid, which quickly damage a vehicle’s exterior. Parking directly beneath a tree also might expose the paint job to sap or fallen leaves or berries, each of which can adversely impact vehicle exteriors. If you plan to park in the shade to protect a vehicle’s paint job, ideally choose a spot that is not directly beneath the tree.

• Make car washes part of your vehicle maintenance routine. Over time, contaminants such as pollen, dust, and pollutants can settle on a

• Use a car cover. Car covers may or may not be practical for cars that drivers use every day, but they are an effective way to protect a paint job from the elements. Drivers who have a spare car they rarely drive or even those who do not drive their primary vehicle a lot each day can purchase a universal-fit car cover or a premium cover designed specifically for their vehicles. Car covers protect paint jobs from ultraviolet

A well-maintained paint job can improve the appearance and life expectancy of a vehicle, which is something drivers should keep in mind as they hope to get the most out of their automotive investment.

Tracking Down the Perfect Vehicle

Buying a vehicle is a significant financial investment. It is not a decision to take lightly, especially given the historically high prices of new cars in recent years.

Finding a vehicle that is the perfect fit requires consideration of a host of variables, including personal preference. What is perfect for one individual may not work for another. When the time comes to shop for a car, people can ask themselves a few questions in an effort to find a vehicle that best suits their situation.

• What are your needs? Are you looking to carpool the kids to and from school, or do you want a fuel-efficient car for commuting? Identifying the main purpose of the vehicle will eliminate certain cars or trucks right off the bat.

• What is your budget? It is a good idea to get a pre-approval loan statement from a financial provider to figure out what you can afford to pay for a vehicle. The automotive resource Edmunds says the general

rule is the monthly car payment should not exceed 15% of your monthly take-home pay. Lease payments should be less than 10% of monthly take-home pay. Calculate these numbers and potential interest rates prior to shopping for a vehicle.

• What size is best for you? Even though it may seem that SUVs and pickups reign supreme on the road, some drivers prefer smaller vehicles. Figure out how much interior space and cargo room you need. Take the time to sit in different vehicle classes to determine which size fits you best.

• What are your fuel preferences? Today’s vehicles come in

electric, unleaded gasoline, diesel, and hybrid options. How the car or truck is powered may be important to you and will help identify the best vehicle for you.

• What is the cost of ownership? Certain vehicle brands may be more expensive to maintain than others. According to Motor1. com, luxury and premium brands are typically the most expensive to maintain, with European brands typically carrying high maintenance costs. This can be prohibitive when parts or service is needed.

Buying a vehicle requires careful consideration of drivers’ needs, budget, and desired features.

“Transylvania 3” will be the movie shown on a giant screen in the library

to end the evening.

Smyth said that about 100 people attended the event last year. “Last year, we gave out 12 boxes of pizza and 100 pretzels,” he reported. “It’s gotten bigger and better every year.”

Trunk or Treat events are designed to be a way for children to enjoy gathering Halloween candy that is safer than going door to door and also easier on parents because there is no need to drive to surrounding

neighborhoods. “In Christiana, there are a lot of farms, so the kids have to travel far to trick or treat,” Smyth said, adding that children are asked to dress in costume for the event.

Attendees, as well as vehicle owners, are asked to register by emailing smythb@christiana pd.org. “We ask that people register in advance to gauge how many people might be coming,” Smyth said. However, he added, walk-ins will also be welcome.

In the event of rain, Trunk or Treat will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11. For more information, visit www.face book.com/christianaboroughpd.

Organizers are currently seeking local farmers, crafters, artists, photographers, candle makers, beekeepers and other creative vendors to showcase their wares or services. “We really want people that own small businesses (that sell items like) bread, honey and soap; local artists; and local farmers,” said Casey Wyatt, secretary and treasurer of the society and secretary of the commission. “We want local vendors to try to sell their creations.”

Vendors that have registered to participate so far will offer coffee, sourdough bread, baked goods,

3D printed items and pillows.

The open house will be held in the back of the borough building, which houses the History Room and is the location of the society’s monthly meetings. “It’s very new because the society just formed a year ago,” noted Wyatt. “We have turned that conference room into a historical museum for Parkesburg.”

The History Room features photos and Parkesburg memorabilia, some of which has been donated by Parkesburg historian Gerry Treadway.

The History Room also houses a candy cabinet from the former Dee’s

candy store, which is being used as a display case; Parkesburg lamps; and vintage clothing, including uniforms from Parkesburg’s professional baseball team, the PICO Ironmen, which was sponsored by the Parkesburg Iron Company.

We have things from the Parkesburg Centennial, the Sesquicentennial, a Bible, golf clubs, a conference room chair from the

According to Wyatt, the Parkesburg Historical Commission was started by Treadway in 2019 and is a government entity. A separate Parkesburg Historical Society was formed in 2024, which is a nonprofit organization. The five commission members are also board members of the society. In a post dated May 25, Wyatt announced that the commission’s Facebook page was turned over to the society. The post stated, in part, “The Facebook page previously managed by the Parkesburg

Historical Commission is now being operated by the Parkesburg Historical Society. While the historical society is a separate and independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, many of the same dedicated individuals continue to be involved. Our mission remains steadfast: to bring together residents in appreciation of our shared history, and to preserve, maintain and showcase historical artifacts and materials.”

Since its formation, historical society members have attended various events in the community to showcase some of its historical items as part of a portable exhibit. Members were at Christiana Historical Society’s Heritage Days, at Minch Park during National Night Out and at the Stottsville Inn during Lafayette’s visit this past summer.

Items that are part of the display include a Parkesburg lamp and Parkesburg milk bottle and historical photos. “Cathy Wilde provided a photo album of the Parkesburg lamps, and Gerry (donated) badges from PICO rail lines from the iron company,”Wyatt noted.

She added that the upcoming vendor show is the society’s first organized event, and it will also give people a chance to see all the items that have been donated and curated over the years. “Very few people have had a chance to come through the History Room, and this event will be an opportunity for the community to see the things we have collected,” Wyatt said.

Vendors interested in participating in the event are asked to email parkesburghistoricalsociety@gmail .com by Thursday, Oct. 2. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, people may join the “Parkesburg Historical Society” Facebook group.
