Libary To Offer Books, Baked Goods

Shoppers looking for bargains and treasures are invited to attend the Community Yard Sale to be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Borough of Parkesburg.

During the day, homeowners from throughout the area will hold yard sales at their homes. Maps of the yard sale locations will be published and available on Thursday, Sept. 26.

Individuals may obtain a map by emailing Wendy Keegan, borough secretary, at wakeegan@parkesburg.org or by visiting www.parkesburg.org. Maps will also be available on Saturday morning outside the door at the borough offices, 315 W. First

After a long absence, the Soap Box Derby will return to Christiana on Saturday, Sept. 28. This year, young drivers ages 8 to 14 will race downhill on North Bridge Street in Christiana Borough.

The event is being organized by the Christiana Fire Company, as well as past participants. “There were a few members in the community who asked to bring it back because there were kids interested in doing it again,” race director John Moore said. “It’s a day for the kids. We’re going to have fun.”

The race will involve closing North Broad Street from 6 a.m. to about 5 p.m.

Action will start in the morning, with practice runs at about 9 a.m. There will be food available at the Christiana Lions Club Park, along with bounce houses and other attractions.

The race involves many volunteers, which was one reason it was discontinued after running from 2004 through 2010 with Jim Groff as race director.

“I’m glad to see it coming back. It’s a great sport,” Groff said.

This year some past drivers will come back to help with the event. One of them is Zachary Vandenbosch, who raced the Christiana Lions Club car in 2007 at the age of 11.

“My big memory is putting (the race car) together with my dad. It really is a great family sport that brings everyone together,” Vandenbosch said. “I knew it was going to be hard for me to win because I was so big. I had a hard time getting down in the car.”

Past races were qualifiers for the AllAmerican Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, but the cost of going on to the championship race proved to be prohibitive. This year, the derby in Christiana is an See Soap Box pg 2

Walk To End Epilepsy Will Raise Awareness, Research Funds

Annual Community Yard Sale Scheduled In Parkesburg Ave., Building 1, Parkesburg. Those who would like to be included on the map must contact Keegan by Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Keegan said that an average of 20 to 30 homeowners hold yard sales each year. One year, however, nearly 50 residents took part.

“We hold yard sales the last week in April and the last week in September.

(The tradition) started in the early 2000s,” said Keegan, noting that residents do not have to purchase a permit to participate in the yard sale.

She said that creating a map of yard sale sites makes it easier for shoppers.

“I attend Chester County Day and they provide a map, so I thought we should do the same thing,” Keegan said.

Residents who live outside of Parkesburg Borough are also encouraged to shop at the yard sales.

Aaron Wingert of Lancaster was 30 when he experienced his first epileptic seizure.

“Everything is normal in your life, and then you wake up in the back of an ambulance,” he said.

Nineteen-year-old Nadine DeBalko of Adamstown was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 12 and had to change her perceptions about the disorder.

“I thought it was just older people who had it,” she recalled.

“Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns and Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” will be presented by LeeP Productions LLC at locations across central Pennsylvania and beyond from Sunday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, Dec. 1.

In recognition of National Hunger Action Month in September, Giant Food Stores announced that its customers raised $780,676 to support local hunger relief efforts during the biannual Bag Hunger campaign.

The company’s Bag Hunger campaign ran from Aug. 25 through Sept. 7 across all Giant and Martin’s stores.

According to Feeding America, each dollar raised helps to provide at least 10 meals, meaning that the funds raised during Giant’s Bag Hunger campaign will fund more than 7.8 million meals. Funds raised during the campaign go to more than 100 hunger-relief partners, including

Litter Free School Program Available Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides the Litter Free School Zone program to public and private schools in Pennsylvania as a way to encourage students and staff to stop litter in its tracks, ensuring that it does not find its way to the neighboring streets, parks, and storm drains where it would become even more harmful to the environment and community. The Litter Free School Zone program is a comprehensive program that encourages young people to play an active role in protecting and improving our environment through recycling, litter awareness, and community stewardship.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides a sign recognizing the participating school as a Litter Free School Zone. The school, in turn, organizes two cleanups or beautification events per year.

There are currently more than 80 schools participating in the program. All schools are welcome to participate, from elementary through high school, public or private.

A luncheon and time of fun and fellowship followed the historic church service. Members and guests shared recollections and perused hundreds of historical photos on display.

According to a written history of the church, St. John’s was established in 1729 as a mission of the Church of England, meaning that it predated the Episcopal Church and even the United States of America. Later, the church became an independent Episcopal parish, then a mission of the Diocese of Pennsylvania, and finally, an independent parish again.

Today, the church is led by the Rev. Dr. Nina George-Hacker, rector.

More than 80 people gathered at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Compass, to celebrate the congregation’s 290th anniversary on Sept. 15.

The service included a Mass of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist, led by the Right Rev. Daniel G. P. Gutierrez XVI, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. Gutierrez was assisted by the Rev. Joan Wylie, deacon at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, Coatesville.

Organist Richard Hacker and the choir offered three anthems, and the guest trumpeter was Vinnie Shickora of Parkesburg.

Three adults who were not originally Episcopalians were confirmed into the church. They are Gail Smith and James Hershey, both of Parkesburg, and Liz Palwick-Goebel of Lancaster.

Open Space Grant Program Posted municipalities, regional recreational authorities, and nonprofits in southeastern Pennsylvania have undertaken a variety of open space projects. PECO has partnered with Natural Lands to provide grants to assist in these efforts.

Eligible applicants include municipalities and regional recreational authorities within PECO’s suburban service territory, which includes portions of Bucks,

Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and York counties. Within the city of Philadelphia, eligible applicants are limited to incorporated nonprofit organizations.

The grants are to be used with other funding sources to cover expenses related to open space projects, such as consulting fees, trail construction, land acquisition, habitat improvement, and creating and implementing an open space

PECO has announced that applications are being accepted for its Green Region Open Space grant program, which Natural Lands administers. The program, now in its 15th year, awards grants of up to $10,000 to eligible municipalities and recreation authorities within PECO’s service area. Airport Receives Grant Funding G.O. Carlson Airport has been approved for grant funding to help with infrastructure upgrades. The G.O. Carlson Airport was awarded $1.1 million to assist with the expansion of the terminal building and to implement ground access improvements.

The funding comes through PennDOT’s Aviation Transportation Assistance Program, the Aviation Development Program, and the Multimodal Fund. The goal of the funding is to invest in efforts that will expand aviationrelated economic and operational opportunities.

The Kensill Fund for Hope benefit auction will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Leola United Methodist Church, 7 W. Main St., Leola.

The 43rd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, known as the largest disaster relief auction in the world, will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, beginning at 9 a.m.

The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $16 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally.

Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year.

In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding in response to disasters ranging from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown.

Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event

may have as many as five auctions taking place at once.

Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children.

A Children’s Store will offer quality used items, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a Phredd concert by WJTL personality Fred McNaughton.

Other activities will include a car show, a tractor show and the Run for Relief, a 5K walk/run.

There will be an area for venders of crafts and art objects and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including hundreds of pies. Handmade onsite Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels and pizza will be available.

Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, is a collection of gourmet food eateries and juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, artisan

From January through April this year, Girl Scout Lizzy Stahelek organized dance parties for children of all ages with special needs as part of a service project in conjunction with pursuing the Girl Scout Silver Award. The dances were so successful that Lizzy has decide to continue the parties this fall.

Event To Benefit Animal Rescue

The Soulful Dog, featuring food, live music, vendors and an opportunity to win prizes, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, from noon to 5 p.m. at Thornbury Farm, 1256 Thornbury Road, West Chester.

All proceeds will benefit Second Chance Rescue (SCR) NYC. Downingtown resident Gina DeMarco explained that although SRC is based in New York, the nonprofit organization helps animals nationwide.

“Second Chance Rescue is a wonderful organization that has helped countless dogs and cats who have been abandoned, abused and neglected since 2009,” she said. “Second Chance has helped to pull many dogs to safety from ACCT Philly and is also partnered with smaller rescues and shelters with not enough resources. SCR is an amazing organization that has saved countless lives.”

Featured at the fundraiser will be food, including vegan chili, portabella mushroom sliders and fish tacos prepared by DeMarco’s husband, chef Dave Walti. For children, there will be hot dogs and macaroni and cheese.

Storyteller Deborah Pieri will be featured, and vendors will sell various products such as honey, pottery, beeswax candles, homemade elderberry syrup and artwork. There will also be pet-related items for sale, including homemade treats, pet clothing and Halloween costumes. Dog trainers will also be on hand.

Children will be able to compete a take-home craft and enjoy a hands-on animal program, “Jeb’s Hip Bees and Other Critters” presented by Abram Boughton.

There will be a silent auction and an opportunity to win prizes through a random drawing. Folk and Americana music will be provided by musician Rick Lawrence.

Lizzy’s younger sister, Ally, who has special needs, was the inspiration for the project. “Kids can dance their own way and enjoy the music in their own way,” said Lizzy. “The kids will not have to follow dance steps; it will be a dance party.”

Lizzy said that between 16 and 20 participants attended the dances held earlier this year. They were accompanied by volunteers, including Lizzy’s friends and family members as well as members of the Best Buddies organization.

In addition to dancing, the parties include special features such as the limbo, conga lines and parachute games. Participants can also play with balloons and hula hoops.

“It will be same thing, but with new music and new some fun ideas,” said Lizzy.

The church provides the space free of charge. “We want to thank the Grove Church for their generosity,” said Lizzy’s mother, Margaret. “They have been really good to work with.”

place without having to learn any formal dance steps. “There wasn’t a place for someone like our daughter, so Lizzy wanted to create something where everyone can participate,” she explained. “(The dances are) great. We love them, and we can’t for them to start.”

Lizzy received her Silver Award certificate this summer, and a formal ceremony will be held in February 2020. Even though her project is done, she decided to continue the dances for the benefit of her sister and others. “There’s no reason to stop them,” she stated. “People still want to come and have fun.”

After the opening event on Sept. 28, upcoming dances will be held on Oct. 12 and 26; Nov. 16 and 23; Dec. 14; Jan. 18, 2020; Feb. 1 and 22, 2020; and March 7 and 21, 2020. It is not necessary to register for the events, and participants can attend as many dance parties as they choose.

All attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian who must stay with them during the hourlong session. Siblings are welcome.

Dancers are encouraged to bring bottled water or other beverages. The church is handicapped-accessible.

She coordinates a support group and other programs to ensure people with epilepsy have the encouragement, guidance, and information they need. “My job allows me to give back,” she said.

“I feel really fortunate.”

Michnya is also helping to coordinate Lancaster County’s inaugural Walk to End Epilepsy along with Wingert and DeBalko, who are both volunteers. Wingert had attended a version of the event in Philadelphia and was so impressed by the camaraderie and sense of community among the participants that he suggested that it be brought to Lancaster.

“It was more than time to have it here,” Michnya said. “It sends a great message: You are not alone in your diagnosis.”

The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Registration will open at 9 a.m., the walk will begin at 10 a.m., and the event will conclude by noon. Both DeBalko and Wingert are slated to speak during the opening ceremony. The walk will mimic Philadelphia’s event by taking place inside the stadium. “It really brings the community together,” Wingert said of keeping the event contained.

The event is family focused, so there will be activities for children throughout the morning. These include entertainment by a magician, face painting, balloon sculpting, and play

never remembers a time without seizures. She was diagnosed at age 10. Now age 42, she has been seizure-free for 11 years. Both Michnya’s and Wingert’s seizures are well-controlled by medication.

DeBalko opted to have surgery two years ago to remove her amygdala, the area of the brain where her seizures were centralized. She considers herself cured.

“Epilepsy is a spectrum disorder,” Michnya explained. “It looks different and treatments are different in each person.”

Navigating life with epilepsy is challenging, the trio agreed. “There didn’t seem to be a lot of resources available,” Wingert said. “I saw my neurologist every six months, but they couldn’t help with the emotional aspect.” Thankfully, he said, he discovered the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania (EFEPA) through social media a few years ago.

Epilepsy has two sets of specific challenges, Wingert suggested: the seizures themselves and the side effects of the treatments available. The uncertainty of the disorder, the restriction from driving and from certain occupations, and the financial costs of medication, ambulance rides, and hospital stays can create a lot of stress. For people like Wingert who have idiopathic seizures, stress can trigger more seizures. Thus, having a community of understanding people is hugely important.

Organizers are seeking donations for the auction, including handmade items, farm products, antiques, gift certificates, collectibles and artwork. Especially needed are larger items for the live auction. People may drop off items at the 4-H Center on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept.

25 and 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The annual Chester County 4-H Center Benefit Auction, which has been held for more than 20 years, will take place rain or shine on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Romano 4-H Center, located at 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook.

The event will include a silent auction that will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m., followed by a live auction from 6 p.m. to approximately 10 p.m. Admission is free, and all are invited to attend.

The silent auction will feature many products and services donated by local residents and businesses. “We will have kitchen items; gift cards; passes to Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art and Winterthur; Northbrook Canoe and golf passes; and gift cards to local restaurants,” said event chair Amy Pippin. “We will also have some kitchen items, like a kitchen gift basket, and ceramic wall hangers and art supplies. We will have a gift card to Wyncote Golf Club for golf or the restaurant.”

Fresh produce will be offered in the live auction as well as wheat straw, fine art, pet food and more.

“For the live auction, I have a handmade quilt, hand-braided

rugs, pumpkins, mums and mushrooms,” said Pippin. “We will have some equine (supplies) and donations from various 4-H clubs. This year, we will have a Movie Basket in the live auction with a gift card to a movie theater.”

A returning attraction this year will be a cash-only table.

“Basically, you can just purchase items from the table directly,” explained Pippin. “New this year will be 2019 reusable grocery bags that say Chester County 4H Center on them.”

Youth members from local 4H clubs donate items they have purchased or made for gift baskets. Additionally, 4-H youths will provide assistance during the auction, serving as runners and helping display items for auctioneer Bill McCauley.

4-H members and their families also help gather donated items. “I start sending out (donation) letters in July and August, and some of the 4-H members follow up with businesses in the area,” Pippin said. “Older 4-H members or parents who take a couple of kids (will also pick up items). The donors love it when the kids come.”

The Dairy Cart will also be onsite throughout the auction to offer refreshments, including

Established in 1985, Cruisin’ Classics of Chester County has been supporting local charities for more than 30 years. The club holds two shows a year. The annual club show is held the first Saturday in May, and the Support the Troops show typically takes place the last Saturday in September.

The car club’s spring show supports the club and benefits charities in Lancaster and Chester counties. Beneficiaries have included Alert Fire Company in Downingtown, the Thorndale Fire Company and Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties, among others. Herbert Yentis, who owns the shopping center, supports the yearly shows and helps defray expenses.

Jane’s music is an eclectic mix of piano-driven pop tunes, guitar-based melodies, soulfilled strings and vocals that have been likened to those of Sarah McLachlan and Natalie Merchant. Jane has opened for Todd Agnew and BarlowGirl and has toured nationally and internationally, performing at a wide variety of venues, including Creation Northeast. She has also led worship for many churches and conferences throughout the country.

Prior to “Sing Over Us,” Jane released two albums, the “Ashes Into Beauty” EP and “Coming Season,” as well as an award-winning, internationally reaching music video, “Unborn,” and the DVD “Unborn: Please Keep Me.” Jane’s mission is to use the beautiful things in music, media and art to convey eternal truth and honor the dignity of every life.

In June 2014, Jane was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was considered inoperable by many of the most renowned neurosurgeons in the U.S. Through a series of events and her connection with the filmmaker and actor Bruce Marchiano, she found a surgeon who could safely remove the tumor and restore her to a healthy life. The following year, in February 2015, she underwent life-saving endoscopic brain surgery in Los Angeles. The tumor posed serious risks to her critical nerves and brain stem, but she is able to walk, talk, sing, hear, and see today.

Optometry Cares - The AOA Foundation awards Healthy Eyes Healthy Children (HEHC) grants up to $5,000 per grant to projects across the nation that increase the quality of children’s eye care through health programs and collaborations within as well as outside the optometric community. The Pennsylvania Optometric Association’s (POA) new Children’s Vision Care Alliance (CVCA) has been awarded $4,800 to expand its Kids Welcome Here program, which is a public outreach campaign targeting school nurses and parents to help provide children with proper eye and vision care.

Studies have shown that up to 60% of children identified as problem learners actually have a vision deficiency. Vision screenings alone fail to identify up to 30% of the students with correctable vision problems. With help from this grant, and through partnership with Pennsylvania schools, the CVCA will educate nurses on the proper techniques for vision screening, educate teachers and parents on the signs and symptoms of visual deficiencies, and conduct a public relations campaign to educate the public generally about the identification of visual deficiencies in children and the need for comprehensive pediatric eye exams.

The goal is to spend the first part of 2020 preparing educational outreach programs. School districts will be offered free training to assist in meeting current screening protocols and to provide information necessary for teachers and parents to identify signs of visual difficulties being experienced by the children in their lives. As with the Kids Welcome Here program, the CVCA will work with the Pennsylvania Health Department to assure that any school nurse under its jurisdiction receives proper education credit to meet their licensure requirements.

The program will raise the level of understanding about the ways to identify children with visual deficiencies and encourage the scheduling of annual eye exams for children across the commonwealth. By giving educators the tools to properly identify children with correctable vision problems, children improperly classified as learning disabled can be removed from disability programs.

Additionally, the grant will help fund colorful, child-friendly posters and brochures for use in health classes and school nurse offices to promote comprehensive eye examinations. Optometry offices will be offered the same posters to encourage parents to bring in their children for examinations.

Longtime Uwchlan Township resident Philip Lustig has unearthed a mystery at his home. While digging in the soil and gardening through the years, he has discovered old pharmaceutical bottles, with no idea of their source.

“I have lived in Uwchlan Township over 40 years on a property I have come to love for its unique array of vegetation. I have added more plants and trees over the years,” said Lustig. “From time to time, when I put in a bush or a tree and I dig just a foot deep, I have found small pharmaceutical bottles. When I put my post box in (and) dug two feet, I found ceramic shards.”

Lustig, whose house was built in 1969, initially believed he had discovered artifacts from the Colonial era.

“I spoke to the township historian about nine or 10 years ago, and she told me during the Revolutionary War, the township building was a hospital and that at the cul-de-sac at Oakland Drive and Balderston Drive, there was a pharmacy,” he stated. “That made sense to me that possibly they dumped their excess bottles in the area.”

However, Lustig, using the names and codes on the bottom of some of bottles, learned that they did not come from that time period. “Through my research I found they are not that old, being actually dated from 1940 to 1953,” he stated. “We found one or two companies that made these bottles.”

Additional bottles were recently uncovered when AQUA PA replaced old water pipes along Oakland Drive. “I asked the work crew to keep their eyes open for bottles in front of my post box,” Lustig said.

“As they did find bottles, they became more enthused to be part of the search and found a large variety. As they went on to the next house digging, they didn’t find any bottles at all. It’s very odd that they seem to be concentrated on my property.”

Coincidentally, Lustig has spent his life collecting brown bottles, which he uses as decor around this home.

“As a freelance photographer, I have traveled around the world on assignments and found an affinity for collecting brown bottles along the way that I saw as decorative art objects,” he stated. “To find historic brown bottles on my own property was a boon to add to my home decor display.”

Lustig hopes to learn the origin of the bottles from Uwchlan Township residents or local historians. Those who have any information are asked to contact him at cybersagacious@verizon.net.

Center Receives More Funding State Rep. Dan Williams recently announced that the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County received extended funding from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) Office of Victims’ Services.

Based in Coatesville, the center will again be allocated $204,022 for the period of Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, through Wednesday, Sept.

30, 2020, after the Victims’ Services Advisory Committee voted recently to extend grants under

Victims of Crime Act funding.

The funding will help the Domestic Violence Center provide services to survivors of domestic violence, including their children.

Victims of Crime Act funding supports local government and community-based victim services. It is financed by fines and penalties paid by convicted federal offenders and not from tax dollars. The grants are distributed in Pennsylvania through a PCCD committee.

VA is using a community-driven approach to prevent suicide and finding innovative ways to deliver support and care to all 20 million U.S. veterans whenever and wherever they need it.

Everyone can play a role by learning to recognize warning signs, showing compassion and care to veterans in need, and offering support. School Plans Fall Festival, Homecoming Lancaster Mennonite School will host its annual family-friendly Fall Festival and Homecoming at its 95-acre Lancaster campus, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, on Friday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 5.

This year, on Oct. 4, there will be a petting zoo, hayrides, an apple

race down the mill stream, a meal provided by Hess’s Barbecue Catering and varsity girls’ soccer and field hockey games. On Oct. 5 in the morning, the school will offer the Iron Bridge 5K Trail Run/Walk, a free fun run for children, and an FFA pancake breakfast.

Additionally, the “Slugs and Bugs Live” concert will be presented on Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. The family-friendly musical performance will include an animated cast and instrumentals from former “VeggieTales” Silly Songs writer Randy Goodgame. Separate ticket

Festivities in the evening on Oct. 5 will be a live auction and

The Chester County FOP Lodge 11 represents more than 800 active and retired law enforcement officers from more than 50 police departments in Chester County. It was established in 1944 and is committed to improving the working conditions of officers and the safety of those they serve through education, legislation, information, community involvement and employee representation.

The Fraternal Order of Police is known as the world’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, with more than 325,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges.

Suicide Prevention Lecture Slated The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Lancaster County will host an educational presentation by the Lancaster/Lebanon staff from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. The program will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, at Lancaster Vet Center, 1817 Olde Homestead Lane, Suite 207, Lancaster.

The presentation will provide an overview of the services offered at the Lancaster and Lebanon Veteran Centers. It will discuss the option of Mental Health America’s free guidance and support available to help navigate residents through the mental health system locally, including how to access local support services, as well as crisis intervention teams, that work within in the county.
