Bike Chester County Offers Group Rides By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Group rides on Thursday evenings and a recent children’s bike rodeo have been keeping members of Bike Chester County busy in the Atglen area. Bike Chester County is a volunteerbased organization that focuses on bike advocacy. The group is managed under the larger seven-county organization, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. Each Thursday at 6 p.m. through Oct. 4, a Bike Chester County group will meet at the Atglen Borough Hall, 120 Main St., Atglen, to enjoy a ride of about 10 miles on area roads. “On a night like tonight, when it’s nice and cool and bright, it’s just beautiful,”

Jan Johnson said as the group prepared to head out on Aug. 23. “I moved to the area 37 years ago, and I’ve been riding all those years. I often come out in this direction and ride, and it’s been fun.” There are no fees or requirements for participation in the rides other than a usable bicycle and a safety helmet. A bicycle light is recommended. “I started leading these rides for Bike Chester County to get people out who are beginners, to get them ... comfortable riding on the road,” Johnson said. “We go about 10 miles, but we can add miles on if we want to. We usually ride along Octorara Creek because it’s cool and it’s shady and it’s beautiful and it’s flat.” See Bike Chester County pg 7
