Community Day, featuring food, craft vendors, children’s activities and entertainment, will be presented by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church and Atglen Public Library (APL) on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities will take place at Atglen Community Park, 400 Ridge Ave., Atglen.
Each year, the organizing committee plans a new attraction; last year it was a zip line. This year, it will be a combination rock wall and bungee trampoline. “There is a rock wall on one side and two bungee trampolines on the other side,” noted committee

Entertainment will include a magic show and balloon animals, as well as a presentation by Critter Connections. Matt Holub will perform pop music on acoustic guitar. “He has never missed a year,” said committee member Pat Softchin from Penningtonville Presbyterian Church.

A Celebration of Christiana History
BY FRANCINE FULTON
“We want to bring awareness to local history and have some family fun,” said Patti Shrom when describing Christiana Heritage Days being presented by the Christiana Historical Society (CHS) on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 12 through 14. The celebration will include music, food, historical demonstrations and displays, children’s activities and guided wagon tours through the town. Visitors will also be able to learn about the Christiana Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place in Christiana on Sept. 11, 1851.

Todd Prickett, co-owner of The Barn at Paradise Station, has specific criteria that talent appearing at the venue must meet. “Our main focus is not on the quantity of our shows, but quality,” stated Todd, who noted that an act’s material should be suitable for all family members. When Todd first heard of Christian recording artist Chris August, he researched the musician and discovered a 10-day tour called “Acoustic Storytime,”

For the past few months, “From the Attic” has featured buildings along Lincoln Highway that Marquis de Lafayette passed during his 1825 tour through the nation, including the Mount Vernon Inn, the Patterson house, the Stoltzfus house, the Ellmaker House, the Kennedy House, White Chimneys and the Sign of the John Adams tavern.
But there were other buildings, such as farms, mills and churches, many older than the township itself, that were sprinkled around the Pequea Valley. In 1985, and again in 1996, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission designated several areas as Salisbury Township Historic Districts, eligible for state and national recognition.

act upon the state recommendations for recognition, these buildings are not protected from the next owner’s whim. For instance, the Rising Sun Historic District included four early-1800’s buildings at the crossroads of Newport Road (Route 772)and Lincoln Highway (Route 30). Today, only the Kennedy house remains, itself not registered.
Now part of another historic district is threatened - the Slaymakertown Historic District, with the Sign of the John Adams and its adjacent barn, three houses that were once part of the White Chimneys Estate and White Chimneys itself. White Chimneys is the only property now officially on the National Register of Historic Places. At present, the John Adams is owned by a family that treasures the historic home. Readers

are invited to attend the November meeting of the historical society when former owners Jim and Brian Martin will reveal a few of its secrets.
And buildings not quite as old have been lost.
The Bishop Eby Farm on Brackbill Road is now a pile of rubble among the cornfields; the Hensel carriage house next to the Gap VFW had to be demolished. In 2003, historical society volunteers re-roofed the Fisher house of Buyerstown. That building fell to the need for a new oneroom parochial school. These are the buildings the 21st century remembers. Many more disappeared, not even thought of today. Are there any buildings of great age remaining in Salisbury Township today?
The answer is a resounding yes! But every day brings the possibility of another one disappearing. Fortunately, many new owners are very eager to learn the history of their home and come to the society for that history.
The historical society keeps an eye out for sales of old buildings, asking the owners if members may photograph throughout, just in case the new owner wants to tear it down. The society gets calls about buildings in danger of being razed. When

and their version of açaí bowls, called Penningtonville Power Bowls,” said Softchin. “The youth group will have a stand and sell cotton candy.” The Octorara FFA milkshake truck will also be on hand.
Other attractions will be a dunk tank and a display of emergency vehicles by the Christiana Fire Company. APL will have a table of free books from Scholastic Literacy Partners.
Craft vendors will be set up along the perimeter of the park, and there will be booths set up by representatives from local organizations.
“We will have a lot of nonprofits set up and vendors to promote their organizations, whether it be the fire company and ambulance and local politicians,” said Softchin. “They all donate something toward our auction.”
The live auction will begin at 2 p.m., and there will also be an opportunity to win prizes through a random drawing, including gift baskets and gift cards.
“All of the (items have been) donated from the local community and small
businesses,” Hahn said.
There will also be children’s games and activities.
“For a fee, you get a wristband for unlimited games and the bounce house inflatable obstacle course,”
Hahn said, adding that those who donate canned goods for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) will receive a discount.
Proceeds from Community Day are given to the APL and other local organizations, including the fire company, ambulance association and OAFC, among others. “We give everything we make each year and just keep a little seed money to start next year,” Hahn said, adding that Community Day has grown through the years and that about 1,000 people attend the event annually from the Octorara community.

in which August is featured with fellow artists Rachael Lampa and Jason Gray. The timing appeared to be perfect for The Barn. “We booked it,” stated Todd.
In celebration of “Christ and Country,” Acoustic Storytime will play on stage at The Barn, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks, on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. Gray, who will host the event, is a Christian musician known for his emotionally resonant songs and introspective style.
August is originally from Garland, Texas. He became a Christian as a teenager and released his first contemporary Christian album in 2010. A Dove award winner who has toured with Point of Grace, August made a decision in 2018 to tour less and write more, offering his original compositions to fellow artists to record.
Lampa has been exercising her “powerhouse” vocals for the Lord in the music industry since she was a teenager. She is the recipient of a Dove award
for her song “Blessed” and one of the founders of People Loving Nashville, a nonprofit that reaches out to individuals experiencing homelessness and incarceration. On March 21, World Down Syndrome Day, Lampa released “Superpowers,” a song about her two-year-old son, Leo, who has Down syndrome.
The Barn co-owner Kat Prickett noted that the venue looks for “original and unique content” that is “uplifting and blesses the soul.” The Prickett family especially relates to Lampa’s journey. “Our five-year-old nephew (Todd’s grandson) has Down syndrome, and it has blessed our family in ways we never expected,” shared Kat. “We know that he was created for a purpose and that he will impact everyone he comes in contact with.”
Christian artist Jason Gray will host the upcoming performance of “Acoustic Storytime” at The Barn at Paradise Station.
“Acoustic Storytime” is unusual in that it features national artists in an intimate setting. “The personal and close connection of the audience to the artists will give a one-of-a-kind experience that is hard to find anywhere else,” pointed out Kat, who added that the musicians will share “personal stories, struggles, and inspirations.” “Usually concerts have audiences of thousands,” noted Kat. “Our venue will be about 200. (Audience members) will feel like (they) are part of the experience ... we want to provide a memorable and meaningful experience.” More information about the event may be found at www.barnatparadise station.com or by calling 717-687-5000, ext. 118.

Also featured at the location will be a replica of a box used by Henry “Box” Brown. Brown was an enslaved man in Virginia who, in 1849, mailed himself to freedom in a wooden crate to Philadelphia. “People can guess how much it cost (for postage) and for a donation they can and sit in the box to feel what it was like,” Shrom noted.
Also on Sept. 13, there will be historical demonstrations and displays at the Christiana Masonic Lodge, including a collection of photos about Quaker history and the Underground Railroad. Guests will include author Joel Moore and Gwen Dickinson, who will talk about her father, William Chester Ruth, a local inventor.
The Heritage Days celebration will conclude on Sept. 14 with Friendship Day, which will include a short service with prayers

Shrom noted that when the 2025 celebration ends, plans will begin for next year’s event, which will commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Christiana Resistance. “We will be taking preorders for hats, shirts, a lunch tote and backpack with the 175th logo,” she said.
“We are also looking for new (CHS) members,” she added. “New members will get a gift, and current members can also renew their membership. If you do that during Heritage Days (membership is good) from September 2025 to December 2026.”

The society recently made a photographic history of a 1900s farmhouse; the new owner wished to demolish it to build a barn on the site. On the other side of the coin, the owner of a newly renovated house in White Horse is currently waiting for society members to photograph its treasured now-exposed interior log walls.

Giant and Martin’s pharmacies also offer pneumococcal vaccinations, which can be administered at the same time as a flu shot.
The CDC recommends the pneumococcal vaccination for all children younger than 5 years old and all adults age 50 years or older. It is also recommended for both children and adults with certain risk conditions.

Railroad Heritage Day Set
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host Railroad Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 6.
The family-friendly event will include a presentation titled “The Evolution of Rail” by Beth Anne Keates at 11 a.m. in the museum auditorium, followed by book signings in the lobby through the end of the day. Keates is a volunteer for the West Chester Railroad and also marches annually as Betsy Ross in the Lansdowne parade. Keates has co-authored several books with Kenneth Springirth, including “Viewing SEPTA’s Rail Heritage,”
“Stourbridge Lion to the Stourbridge Line,” “Union Pacific Railroad Heritage,”
“Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Heritage,” and “Viewing Norfolk Southern Railway.”
Railroad Heritage Day activities are included in the regular museum admission.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is home to a collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a research library and archives, a working restoration shop, an immersive education center, and a museum store. For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org or call 717-687-8628.
A presentation called “The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at 50” by Dodie Robbins, museum curator, will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the museum auditorium. The event will also feature a railroad heritage craft activity table for kids and a Pennsylvania Railroad truck owned by Ken Briers, both present all day in Rolling Stock Hall. A number of the museum’s historic locomotives and railroad cars will also be open for visitors to experience.
