Cornerstone Reproductive Health’s 12th annual Celebrate Life Fest and Walk for Life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at New Holland Church of the Nazarene, 428 Ranck Road, New Holland. The event, formerly known as just the Walk for Life, will feature a 5K walk, cornhole tournament and a host of children’s activities. “It’s just encompassing more of that festival feel,” said Olivia Imchen, event organizer. “It had become more than just a 5K walk. … We wanted to incorporate all of that in the name, too, just to let people know that it’s a fun family event.”
Time to dust off those pencil skirts and sailor shorts. The Moores Memorial Library is preparing for a unique new fundraiser, a “Rockin’ ’50s Dance Night” at the Christiana Fire Company, 214 S. Bridge St., on Friday, Sept. 11, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30, and attendees are asked to bring out their best ’50s-inspired outfit. “Poodle skirts is what I would think of,” said Karen Woods, one of the organizers of the event. “Bright colors. I know we’re doing the pinks and the blues.” The highlight of the event will be Elvis Presley impersonator Jeff Krick, who will perform Elvis hits such as “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock,” as well as classic country and soft rock favorites. In the lead-up to the event, there’s a cardboard cutout of Presley in the library’s lobby; the cutout and Krick will be available for photo-ops at the event. “He’s all over the country,” Woods said of Krick. “He’s reputed to be very, very good. ... A couple of the people coming know of him and have seen him before, so they were very excited.” An admission fee will be charged for the event; attendees who go as a couple can get a slightly reduced price. Tickets can be purchased at the library; cash, check or Venmo will be accepted. The library asked that attendees purchase tickets by Saturday, Sept. 5.

he Christiana Historical Society (CHS) will hold its annual Christiana Heritage Days event on Friday, Sept. 11, through Sunday, Sept. 13. The celebration will include music, food, historical displays, children’s activities and guided wagon tours throughout the town. Visitors will also be able to learn about the Christiana Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place 175 years ago on Sept. 11, 1851. “ That’s why we always have (Heritage Days) at that time frame,” said CHS member Patti Shrom. “We’re trying to make it extra special for families.” Activities will be centered around the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana, which is the CHS’s headquarters. Other

The event is limited to those age 18 and up, and no alcohol will be permitted at the event. A catered meal is included in the cost of attending the event. The meal will provide attendees with the choice of a hamburger or hot dog, along with a platter of sides. Root beer floats will also be available. Funds raised from the event will go toward ke e p i n g t h e l i b ra r y ’s programs, particularly its children’s programs, free for the whole community to enjoy. Located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana, the library offers a STEM club, Lego club and summer reading program, just to name a few. The library also has a special display up for the upcoming Christiana Heritage Days event, which will be showcased on Saturday, Sept. 12. The library had 62 readers in its summer reading program this year.
“We always have a lot of participation, which is nice,” said Kimberly Campbell, one of the event’s organizers. “That’s (what) the majority of the funds raised go to.” Aside from children-centric events, the library also recently held a movie night. The library is asking the community to come out for one night to support all things it does for the community throughout the year. “The library is a pillar, especially in this small town,” Campbell said. “People come to use the computers, homeschooled kids every fall. It’s a very family-friendly library; kids are running around.” Founded in 1881, the library is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The library is closed on Sundays.

The deadline for full sponsorship benefits is Tuesday, Sept. 1, although sponsorships will be accepted after that date. A “Kids Zone” will also be at the event, featuring face painting, an obstacle bounce house, balloon animals, baby chicks and more. All of the activities will be located within the church’s fence. “It’s perfect for kids,” Straub said. “We have all the kids’ activities inside the fence, so the parents can see them at all times and where they’re running around, so that’s really nice, too.” Free food will be offered throughout the day, including hot dogs, popcorn and chips. Free water has also been donated by the Parkesburg Grocery Outlet. Cornerstone ser ves as a resource for women experiencing unexpected pregnancies. It offers free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, prenatal services, and parenting incentive programs, along with other services. The agency also has a mobile medical unit, which can provide ultrasounds and other services out in the community. This year will be the third time the event has been held in New Holland. The annual event was moved in 2024 to be more central to the ministry’s service area. Bad weather mired the event’s maiden voyage in New Holland, but Cornerstone’s fortunes improved last year. “It wasn’t ideal, but it was definitely better than previous years,” Imchen said. “It rained the day before, but not the day of. The day of turned out to be pretty nice.” The walk and amateur cornhole tournament will both start at 9 a.m. Preregistration is required for the cornhole tournament and can be done online by visiting www.cornerstone s u p p o r te r s . o r g / e ve n t / celebrate-life-fest/. Day-of registration will be available for the 5K walk. Registration by Thursday, Sept. 17, guarantees placement in the cornhole tournament, as well as a free T-shirt included in the cost of registration. As in the prior two years, the 5K walk will be on the walking trail located behind the church. The trail is a mile long; participants will do the loop three times to complete the 5K distance. The walk is open to people of all ages, and prizes will be awarded to the individual walker and group of walkers who collect the most funds from sponsorships. Children who walk the trail will receive a passport booklet they can have stamped at various spots. The cornhole tournament was held for the first time in 2024 and has been a success, replacing former events like tug-of-war and a flag football game. “(Flag football) did okay for a while and then started to dwindle down a little bit,” said Jennie Straub, executive director of Cornerstone Reproductive Health. “So that’s when we switched to cornhole, and the cornhole

Chester County has ex pa nde d i t s i nte r n ationally recognized Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program to include specialized training tailored to responding to youths and veterans who

The CIT-Y program was piloted in Chester County earlier this year, bringing law enforcement personnel, educators, first responders, and community providers together to learn about adolescent brain development and how to recognize mental health symptoms in youths. Participants learned engagement strategies and how to connect youths with appropriate services and support. Chester County was one of only six counties nationwide chosen by the National Alliance on Mental Illness to pilot the program. The county government’s first VRT program, held in
June, brought law enforcement officers with military experience together with community agencies dedicated to assisting veterans and their families during times of crisis. The VRT works to connect veterans with the resources and support they need while promoting safety and well-being. The next VRT program will be held in November. The county government also offers one-day CIT programs for emergency medical technicians and 9-1-1 Center dispatchers. a n d L i n co l n H i g hway. Adapting the two large rooms on the first floor to the society’s needs had just begun as PennDOT construction on Newport Road started. It is unknown if it was the new drainage portals or the heavy equipment so close to the house, but very soon the west wall began to sink and cracks appeared. The cracks grew. No amount of conservation would guarantee its stability. Houston Run bought it back to round out their acreage before their own land dissolution. Their generous offer formed the largest donation the historical society has received and has allowed it to consider a new venture - a standing museum. All the while, the society continued accepting, cataloging, and storing township family treasures. A serendipitous meeting in 2025 matched the society with an iconic Salisbury Township business, the old Lengacher Cheese House, 5015 Lincoln Highway, next to Roamers’ Retreat. Half of the building was for rent, the most conservative option for a nonprofit soci-
ety to choose today. The historical society signed on and began renovating, often able to negotiate reasonable reductions in cost. Many established museums donated display items they no longer used. Yard sales and Roots Market in Manheim were sources for chairs and kitchen items. At last, the huge Denlinger murals could come out of storage. By this past June, the society was ready to bring out some of the collections for display. Members got a preview after the annual picnic at White Chimneys Estate, a loyal sponsor of 15 years. The society was at the annual living history event also at White Chimneys in July. Then, it was time to think about officially opening the Historical Society of Salisbury Township Museum. T hat is just what is happening at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17. The public is invited to the official ribbon cutting , with a tour of the building (5015 Lincoln Highway, Kinzers) and refreshments afterward.

completely done with the outside,” said CHS member Charlene Ranck. “There’s still windows, ceiling and painting here that still needs to be done, but it’s sturdy enough that we can have 50 or more persons out here.” The opening event will be on Friday, when the Barlee Red Band and the Days of Old Band will present a concert on the lawn of the Brinton House from 6 to 8 p.m. The Barlee Red Band will open the show at 6 p.m., followed by an intermission and then the Days of Old Band around 7 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket for the show. “It’s a man on bass guitar and a woman that sings,” Ranck said of the Barlee Red Band. “They’re local, and they’ll sing for a little bit, and then we’ll have our intermission, where we’re going to do a little bit of an update on what’s going on here, what the historical society is doing and what this weekend event is going to be.” For the first time this year, the Friday concert will be accompanied by f re e h o t d o g s a n d i ce cream. A freewill donation bucket will be available at events throughout the weekend. Saturday’s extensive list of events includes a Civil War encampment, countless historical displays and vendors. When attendees arrive, they are asked to stop by the welcome booth and get a map of the day’s activities. On Saturday, the Mocha Motion and Skip’s food trucks will be on the scene w i t h fo o d a n d d r i n k s available for purchase. For kids, Saturday will br ing a local mag ician and a petting zoo. Also
be offered for free. Tour guides will provide information about each site on the tour. The tours, also free for the first time this year, will run every hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We’ll highlight probably a good bit of the main town and what’s happening,” Ranck said. “ We’ll pass a lot of the areas as things are going on, too. We’ll be highlighting most of the homes in this area that would range down from the early 1800s, 1833 and right up through.” A l s o S a t u r d a y, t h e Moores Memorial Library and Christiana Borough Hall will be open for the event. There is a diorama commemorating the resistance that will be opening up at the latter; the library also has a display with some history of the resistance. Members of the society emphasized that attendees at the event are not to walk across the railroad tracks at any time. Instead, they are asked to use the nearby underpass to safely cross the tracks. The anniversary of the resistance is incredibly meaning ful to Darlene Colon, society president, who is a descendant of one of the resistance ’s participants. The society is always searching for more descendants of the Christiana Resistance; the society is planning for a group photo of descendants during the event. The Heritage Days celebration will conclude on Sunday with Friendship Day, which will include a community church service with prayers and music on the lawn of the Brinton House, followed by a potluck lunch. Attendees are asked to bring food to share at the potluck.
