Fair Celebrates the Best of Chester County 4-H
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Showcasing all the hard work that 4-H members complete throughout the year is the goal of the annual Chester County 4-H Fair. During the event, held at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4 to 9, youths were able to show the animals that they have been raising and training as well as display the various non-animal projects they completed, ranging from sewing and crafts to growing vegetables. Some projects are completed during club meetings, while others are worked on at home. “It depends on the club,” explained Toni Stuetz, Penn State Extension educator. “Every child that shows a dairy goat has to do a poster on some aspect of dairy goats. It could be about a breed or different parts

of the goat. They present the posters at the club meeting and share their research and resources. Some
of the kids do their projects at home as part of their learning.”

The Power of Friendship
Compeer Chester County Seeks Volunteers
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Compeer Chester County, which pairs trained adult volunteers with individuals in Chester County who are working towards mental health recovery, is currently seeking volunteer friends from the community. “Compeer,” which means “peer” or “companion,” is designed to help build self-esteem and reduce loneliness in a person dealing with mental health challenges, promoting the person’s overall well-being.
Those seeking more information about Compeer as well as prospective volunteers who want to complete an application may visit www.mentalhealth partnerships.org/programs-and -services/compeer.
“The Compeer website has recently undergone a new look, which not only illustrates stories of friendship and hope, but also makes it quite easy to complete a volunteer application - all in one place,” said Donna Kueny, program manager.
Kueny explained that Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. A volunteer with Compeer Chester County is asked to commit approximately four hours per month to meet with their matched friend, who is referred to the program by a mental health professional. The commitment involves spending time with an adult who is dealing with issues such as social anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The specific times and activities for these meetings are decided by

“Volunteering for only four

of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club, showed the pig that she raised at the fair, and she also displayed several projects, including a floral arrangement and a small painting of a country sunset done in acrylic. “I was able to blend the colors without washing out my brush; it was a lot of fun to paint,” said Lillian, noting that she also added fireflies to the artwork. “Every time I see a sunset, I want to paint it.”
Also on display during fair week were projects by the Southern Chester County 4-H Cloverbuds Club. “(Cloverbuds) is a noncompetitive induction to 4-H,” Stuetz

said. “Cloverbuds is designed for children between 5 and 8 years old, and they get to explore all the different things that 4-H has to offer.”
Cloverbuds member Jonathan Owens, who will attend first grade this fall at West Fallowfield Christian School, displayed a birdhouse as well as a poster that he made, which detailed various club activities.
Jonathan’s mother, Amanda Owens, is one of the club’s leaders. She explained that the Cloverbuds learn from their older 4-H counterparts during club meetings. “Older club members will come to our meeting and introduce them to all
that 4-H has to offer,” said Amanda, noting that the Cloverbuds also recite the 4-H Pledge. “Our local rabbit club came to one of our meetings and brought rabbits. We do a lot of STEM stuff and rocketry, and we built bluebird houses. In one bluebird house they got to watch the mama bird build a nest and watch the eggs hatch.”
The Cloverbuds club, which meets at West Grove United Methodist Church, also revived the church’s community garden program. “The church used to have a community garden, but they let it go,” explained Amanda. “So, this year our Cloverbuds, with the help of another local 4-H Club who rototilled for us, planted the community garden for the church’s food bank. The vegetables in the garden help feed the local community.”
In addition to projects, the fair included various livestock competitions, such as dairy, sheep, goat and swine shows, as well as a supreme livestock showmanship contest. The fair also included a Beef Skill-A-Thon and a Sheep & Goat Skill-A-Thon,
during which 4-H members take a written test prior to showing their animals. “They match byproducts with which animal they come from and identify breeds. It is a knowledge test,” explained Rachel Stoltzfus, assistant leader of the Chester County Beef Club. “We will score them, and they get ribbons.”
“The test is probably harder because you have to share your knowledge, but showing is a bigger deal,” added Lillian. “You work with that pig (or other animal) all year long to get into the show.”
4-H is the youth development program of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension. The four H’s stand for head, heart, hands and health. 4-H membership is open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 18. For more information about 4-H, call 610-696-3500 or visit https://extension.psu.edu/ programs/4-h/counties/chester. Shoe Drive
is seeking new or gently used shoes for men, women and children, including sneakers, sandals, boots and sporting shoes like cleats.
All donated shoes will be given to Funds2Orgs, a nonprofit organization that repurposes shoes. According to www.funds2orgs .com, the shoes are sold for a nominal cost to micro-entrepreneurs around the world. Micro-entrepreneurs sell the shoes for a profit, which allows them to feed, clothe and house their families. Charities can earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of shoes collected.
“They organize or help you organize a shoe drive,” Sheppard explained. “As the person organizing the drive, you can choose whatever organization you
want (to benefit).”
Sheppard and Love also participate in the Susan G. Komen Walk for Cancer.
“We actually do the one in San Deigo in November,” Sheppard noted. “We do it in remembrance of family members and friends who have passed, for those currently fighting and to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.”
At the conclusion of the drive, Funds2Orgs will pick up the shoes that are collected. “They are based in Florida but run all over the country. We have a pole building where we are storing all the shoes, and they will send a box truck to my house,” Sheppard noted. “They have minimum of 90 bags of shoes and 25 pairs of shoes per bag.”
Sheppard and Love have a goal of gathering at least

3,500 pairs. To date, they have collected between 2,500 and 2,700 pairs, with additional pairs coming in from a shoe collection competition at Sheppard’s place of work.
“Our goal was to get 5,000 pairs, and that’s a lot more shoes than we thought. We are shooting to get as many as we can,” she stated. “They have 60-day time limit.”
Sheppard said picking up the donations has been time-consuming, but for now it is the best way to collect them. Plans for future shoe drives may include establishing a drop-off location or scheduling a drive-through donation day.
“We have primarily been doing pickups because we found it is more dependable. We get a lot of response if you tell people we will pick them up, and they will have them on the porch,” Sheppard said, noting that during one recent Sunday, she and her daughter drove for more than four hours picking up shoes. “We (have traveled) everywhere from Downingtown to Coatesville to Cochranville and Oxford. This has been the most efficient way to get the shoes, not efficient in gas mileage but it has been fruitful.”
They have also heard many inspirational stories along the way. For example,
one gentleman whose wife passed away wanted to donate all her shoes. “It’s been an experience. One woman wanted to give us all of her shoes because she was going into hospice and said she didn’t need them anymore,” Sheppard shared. “We have cancer survivors who have helped and love the idea. It has touched a lot of people.”
She emphasized that donations must be of good quality. “They will be reused. They won’t be thrown away or recycled; they have to be wearable,” noted Sheppard. “It is very important because the organization itself is using them to stimulate the economy and helping people start their own business by opening shoe stores. It’s a cool and inventive idea.”
“I have been blown away by the donations we have gotten,” she added. “I have only had to pull out fewer than 10 pairs (due to poor quality) of all of the hundreds we have gotten.”
Sheppard and Love plan to hold the shoe drive again prior to next year’s walk. “Every penny you make goes to the organization. That was a draw for me,” said Sheppard. “(I thought,) ‘Let’s give it our best shot and see how it goes.’” Those who would like to donate shoes, may email Jennsheppard1@gmail .com to arrange for pickup.
