New Octorara Intermediate School (OIS) principal Jonathan Blake described himself as a “fourth-grade teacher at heart.” Originally a fourth-grade teacher within WallingfordSwarthmore School District, Blake was most recently
assistant principal of Penn London Elementary School within the Avon Grove School District. Sticking in Chester County, the upcoming school year will be Blake’s first with Octorara. Having recently started his position, he said he is already amazed with how tight the local community is.

Wreaths Across America Sets Annual Golf Fundraiser BY LOGAN MOYER
The Pequea Valley chapter of Wreaths Across America (WAA) will hold its sixth annual golf classic at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club on Friday, Oct. 9, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit organization, which is responsible for placing more than 3,100 wreaths at local veterans’ graves on Wreaths Across America Day, held this year on Saturday, Dec. 19. The Pequea Valley chapter handles 31 cemeteries within the Pequea Valley, Octorara and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts. There is a flat registration fee for every golfer, which includes a round of golf, the use of a cart, snacks and lunch. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Tanglewood Manor Golf Club is located at 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. The group from Diversified Roofing in Parkesburg won the event last year. “They have a lovely course,” said Paula Diem, the chapter’s coordinator. “It’s beautiful in the fall because the trees are turning and so forth. There’s a lot of veterans that golf down there, so they’re very willing to accommodate our golfing.” Last year, 104 golfers participated in the event. This year, registration will be limited to 132 golfers. Registration must be completed by Tuesday, Sept. 15; contact Diem at 717-587-1315 or paula@beilerinsurance.com. tglen knocked the Battle of the Boroughs food drive out of the park. In the second year of the friendly food drive competition between the three boroughs of Atglen, Parkesburg and Christiana, Atglen came out on top. However, the real winner was the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC), for which a grand total of 7,067 pounds of food was collected throughout the event. Atglen’s final tally of 2,747 pounds was enough to secure the victory. The drive started on June 24 and ran through Aug. 4, which doubled as National Night Out. Residents of each borough dropped off food at designated locations, and then each borough took food into the OAFC and had it weighed every week.

The races will be held entirely on the grass cross-countr y course located next to Octorara Intermediate School, 221 Highland Road, Atglen. The top overall male and female runners will receive
awards. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade may qualify for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Elementary Championship. There is a fee for the 5K race with a lower fee for the mile walk. Another highlight of the event is its giveaway drawing baskets. Diem said there are typically around 30 baskets, which include golf equipment, balls, clubs and gift cards that have been donated by the local community and businesses. Along with door prizes, there will also be rewards for the individual who hits the longest drive, as well as for who gets closest to the pin. The Stormers promotion helped Atglen dash to the finish line. New for this year’s drive, Atglen will be the first formal recipient of the drive’s travelling trophy. Currently sitting in Christiana borough hall, the trophy will be formally presented to Atglen at the borough’s next council meeting in September. The drive started last year as Brade’s brainchild. This year, the borough ran a promotion where bringing in five nonperishable food items granted residents two tickets to the team’s Aug. 8 game against the High Point Rockers. Also, if you donated food at the borough hall, Atglen entered you into a drawing to win various merchandise left over from the borough’s 150th anniversary celebration. “We were trying to entice people to be a little bit more generous in donating ,” Grossman said. “Christiana actually offered a bunch of things too. ... T hey offered Rita’s gift cards and popcorn.” This year, Christiana got off to a slow start but managed to gather nearly 2,000

Principal from pg 6 “Going through the interview process, getting to meet more of the admin team, the teachers, the stakeholders, I just could really see myself wanting to be here,” he said. “I immediately just really felt at ease and at home.” Blake has already reached out to around 75 OIS families via phone call. “There’s like this organic, deep passion in terms of caregivers, like their children and students, but then also the partnerships of the school district - in my case the intermediate school - and (wanting) to make sure that their kids get the absolute best educational experience.” Blake said that he views the school as one big classroom, with both students and staff
classified as active learners. His philosophy is grounded in three pillars: people, purpose and progress. He said that education and school is one of the few true shared experiences among all humans. He said that the intermediate level is the “sweet spot” of learning. “We really just understand and value education as more than the curriculum,” he said. “The standards that we have to get across, that’s absolutely extremely important.” Blake’s wife, Shelby, is also a teacher at Blake’s former district of Wallingford-Swarthmore. Along with a 25-pound cockapoo, the couple have two kids: Harper, 2, and Logan, who is under a year old. Blake is
an avid Philadelphia sports fan who also follows Penn State athletics. Blake said that he has had one major event in every year that he has been an administrator, including the birth of his two children and a medical scare. “All of those things I think allowed me to grow in leadership, especially being a parent,” he said. “I feel that really allowed my lens to really grow as well as connect with where families were coming from. Prior to being a parent, I think I tried to do it, but I didn’t fully understand until I got a chance to experience that.” Last month, Blake penned a letter to the Octorara community, promising
to be deeply committed to every student, family and staff member. He promised that OIS will be a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment that provides a sense of belonging for all in it. Blake is not the only new administrator in the district. Angela Regrut is the new principal of Octorara Primary Learning Center; Blake spoke very highly of her. “I’m super excited to get a chance to work with her,” Blake said. “The few times I’ve had a chance to interact with her, we’ve hit it off, and I think we both have a lot of that same positive energy and really wanting what’s best for learners, especially at the K-5 level.”
Measles Vaccines Available at Giant and Martin’s Following a recent report by the Pennsylvania Department of Health that measles cases are on the rise, Giant and Martin’s has announced that measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines are available at its in-store pharmacies.
The MMR vaccine can prevent measles, a highly contagious disease that can lead to serious complications, particularly in young children and unvaccinated individuals. The CDC recommends two doses, which provide approximately
97% protection. Subject to state regulations, Giant and Martin’s pharmacies in Pennsylvania can vaccinate customers age 8 and up without a prescription if they meet the eligibility requirements. Pharmacists are available to
