Showcasing all the hard work that 4-H members complete throughout the year is the goal of the annual Chester County 4-H Fair. During the event, held at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4 to 9, youths were able to show the animals that they have been raising and training as well as display the various non-animal projects they completed, ranging from sewing and crafts to growing vegetables. Some projects are completed during club meetings, while others are worked on at home. “It depends on the club,” explained Toni Stuetz, Penn State Extension educator. “Every child that shows a dairy goat has to do a poster on some aspect of dairy goats. It could be about a breed or different parts
of the goat. They present the posters at the club meeting and share their research and resources. Some
of the kids do their projects at home as part of their learning.”

The Run Brave 5K and 1-mile walk, a new event to benefit the Octorara Junior-Senior High School cross-country teams, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 23. Participants will travel the same course that the teams compete on during the school year.
The 5K and the 1-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m., followed at 10 a.m. by a kids’ race for youngsters in kindergarten through grade six. A registration fee will be accepted for the 5K and walk, but the children’s races are free.
The cross-country program hopes to build on the success of its annual Dire Wolf trail race held in October. “We were looking for another fundraising opportunity and to do something on our own home course,” said Rachel McGinnis, Octorara’s head cross-country coach. “(The course is) behind the intermediate school and the Primary Learning Center, and it goes around the athletic fields. It is across the street from the high school, completely on the grass.”
The 5K run will be professionally timed. “We will have prizes for the first-place finishers and age group prizes,” noted McGinnis, adding that the kids’ race will be part of the Lancaster County Run for Fitness Race Series Championships.
This series is comprised of regional races throughout Lancaster County. The top five male and female finishers in each grade level are eligible to participate in the championship race to be held on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Overlook Park in Manheim Township.
“The top five in their grade and gender will get a little ribbon and can move onto the championship race in Manheim,” McGinnis said. “This is our qualifying race for the kids. Then they will go up against kids from the Lancaster-Lebanon League.”
“It’s a nice way to get the kids involved in running and maybe potentially interested in cross-country running,” she added.
Members of the Octorara boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams will assist with the running of the upcoming event. “The high school and junior high kids will all be out on the course providing directions and cheering. They will not be racing,” noted McGinnis. She said that the event is ideal for those preparing for the upcoming school year, as well as local 5K enthusiasts. “It is the Saturday before school starts, so
a lot of kids and teachers are back from vacation,” said McGinnis. “We’re also hoping to reach out to the community and the running community.”
Like the Dire Wolf trail race, all proceeds will benefit the cross-country teams at both the junior and senior high level. “(Proceeds will be used for) warm-up shirts that are not covered by the school, food for races and any sort of travel (expenses) and anything post-season,” McGinnis noted. “Last year, our girls’ team made it to states. We used some of the funds we had raised for that. Most of it will go the end-of-season banquet.”
Octorara student-athletes are already preparing for the cross-country season. “They have been running on their own all summer. You can’t come in the middle of August and expect to get in shape in time for the season,” McGinnis said, noting that the teams’ first practice was held on Aug. 11. “Our first scrimmage is on Aug. 16. We have another one on Aug. 22, which is also before school. The season goes through Nov. 1 if they make it to states.”
The Run Brave event will take place across the street from Octorara Junior-Senior High School, 228 Highland Road, Atglen. For more information or to register, visit www.runsignup .com and search for “Run Brave 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk.” Walk-in registrations will also be accepted.

of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club, showed the pig that she raised at the fair, and she also displayed several projects, including a floral arrangement and a small painting of a country sunset done in acrylic. “I was able to blend the colors without washing out my brush; it was a lot of fun to paint,” said Lillian, noting that she also added fireflies to the artwork. “Every time I see a sunset, I want to paint it.”
Also on display during fair week were projects by the Southern Chester County 4-H Cloverbuds Club. “(Cloverbuds) is a noncompetitive induction to 4-H,” Stuetz said. “Cloverbuds is designed for children between 5 and 8 years old, and they get to explore all the different things that 4-H has to offer.”
meetings. “Older club members will come to our meeting and introduce them to all that 4-H has to offer,” said Amanda, noting that the Cloverbuds also recite the 4-H Pledge. “Our local rabbit club came to one of our meetings and brought rabbits. We do a lot of STEM stuff and rocketry, and we built bluebird houses. In one bluebird house they got to watch the mama bird build a nest and watch the eggs hatch.”
The Cloverbuds club, which meets at West Grove United Methodist Church, also revived the church’s community garden program. “The church used to have a community garden, but they let it go,” explained Amanda.
and a Sheep & Goat Skill-A-Thon, during which 4-H members take a written test prior to showing their animals. “They match byproducts with which animal they come from and identify breeds. It is a knowledge test,” explained Rachel Stoltzfus, assistant leader of the Chester County Beef Club. “We will score them, and they get ribbons.”
“The test is probably harder because you have to share your knowledge, but showing is a bigger deal,” added Lillian. “You work with that pig (or other animal) all year long to get into the show.”
“So, this year our Cloverbuds, with the help of another local 4-H Club who rototilled for us, planted the community garden for the church’s food bank. The vegetables in the garden help feed the local community.”

This year’s event will feature Paradise Road, Matt & Nimmie Band, Grace Unchained, John Schmid, Jackson Heights, The Churchmen, TruVintage, Third Fret Harmony and The Aaron Stutzman Family.
“Third Fret Harmony and Paradise Road are both local bands, and it’s their first time with us,” noted Chris Straka, CEO of For One Life. “We bill it as a gospel concert. There is bluegrass and country mixed in there, but gospel describes it the best.”
This is the sixth year for the event, which takes place on the property of Merv King from King Construction in New Holland, who
is a supporter of the nonprofit organization. “Last year, the total number (in attendance) was over 3,000 people,” Straka said. “It’s been growing every year. The first year we had 300. Last year was the highest attendance to date. It has become a tradition with a lot of people.”
The event will be held rain or shine, and the musicians will perform on an outdoor stage.
“We have a tent that seats 1,000 people, and the stage is under the tent. There is also seating outside; people bring their lawn chairs,” Straka explained, noting that there are smooth transitions between performers. “It is less than 10 minutes. We have a crew that is trained to do that. We fill up the time with giving away prizes (and other activities). We are efficient with our time.”
In addition to the music, there will be a large kids’ area filled with bounce houses, games and hands-on activities. All activities are provided free of charge.
There will also be a lineup of
food trucks and vendors offering everything from barbecue to sweet treats. Among the food trucks scheduled to be on hand are Skip’s Food Truck, Country Smokehouse

The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library will host two special events during the month of August.
A huge “last chance” sale on media will take place in the Read Moore Bookstore during the entire month of August to make room for new donations. All DVDs, CDs and BluRay disks are on sale at clearance prices.
The all-volunteer run book store is open weekdays from 1 to 4 p.m., on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon and other times by request.
Once again this year, the Friends will participate in the Christiana Community Yard Sale Day on Saturday, Aug. 23. The sale will begin at 8 a.m., and items will be for sale both in the book store and outside. Books will also be on sale that day. In addition, Randy Yoder’s chicken barbecue will be available beginning at 10 a.m.
Those who would like to donate items for the sale should drop them off in the book store no later than Thursday, Aug. 21. All proceeds will go directly to the library to fund its popular programs.
The Friends of the Library meets on the second Thursday of each month at 2 p.m. in the library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. New members are always welcome.
