During the period when COVID-19 restrictions were in place, the work of children’s ministry leaders was made especially difficult. Unable to meet with children in person, the children’s pastors were pushed to become more creative than in the past in order to reach youngsters via virtual means. For those who take part in CONNECT Children’s Ministry, a program of Lancaster Bible College (LBC), a resource to help inspire innovations was already in place. CONNECT, which has been bringing together children’s ministry leaders for the purposes of networking, brainstorming, and fellowship for several years, was created by Deb Hinkel, former director of the Children and Family Ministries at LBC. In the spring of 2020, the group began meeting online. In addition to bringing together more than 50 ministry leaders

he Friends of the Moores Memorial Library and the library board of directors are planning two fundraisers - a golf tournament and a yard sale and chicken barbecue. Proceeds from both events will go directly to fund

library operations. The 12th annual library golf tournament is set for Monday, Aug. 30, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. A light lunch will be provided at noon, and there will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner will be served at the conclusion of the tournament. The
single player fee includes green fees, use of a cart, lunch, dinner and on-course beverages. Preregistration is encouraged by Monday, Aug. 23; registration forms are available at the library and at www.christianalibrary.org/golf -tournament. Golfers may also register by calling 717-951-8713.
Walk-in registrations will be accepted on the day of the event, space permitting. Golfers may sign up with friends as a group of four or enter as an individual and be placed with a team. There will also be door prizes, including gift cards from local businesses. This tournament is designed for amateur golfers, and no prizes will be awarded to professionals. “We usually have about 50 golfers,” said Joan Esworthy, Friends president, who noted that the event took place last September despite the pandemic. “We give a goodie bag out to each golfer. Last year, we had a mask in the goodie bag.” Proceeds will help maintain free use of computers and free internet access for library patrons. They will also help provide prizes for the Summer Reading Program and support weekly story time during the school year, as well as the library’s local history collection and book club. The Chester County commissioners are looking for volunteers to help direct the county’s nearly $102 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The county government is finalizing its structure for prioritizing, requesting, and reviewing proposals as it determines effective strategies for rebuilding communites affected by the pandemic. According to the commissioner’s office, a key part of the process of directing funds is the inclusion of members of the public as part of the county’s ARPA evaluation teams, which will also help to ensure full transparency in spending the funds. Use of the ARPA funds will include support for Chester County’s public health response, including behavioral health; areas of negative economic impact; premium pay for essential workers; and water, sewer, and broadband infrastructure. The underlying theme in all of these areas will be to address services to disproportionately impacted communities. Seven evaluation teams will
be established by Chester County to address each priority area for ARPA funding. Each team will include representatives from Chester County government’s finance department, solicitor’s office, and strategic planning team, who will facilitate the priority groups. Three county employee volunteers and four volunteers from the community will complete each team. Specifically, the county is seeking its volunteers from a cross-section of people of all ages, genders, socioeconomic categories, and geographic areas. The volunteer commitment is expected to be average five to 10 hours per month for six months. Team members will be trained on the criteria for ARPA fund use and how to score proposals, ask additional questions, and develop recommendations for project funding. Anyone age 18 or over who lives or works in Chester County may express interest in being part of Chester County’s ARPA evaluation teams at www.chesco.org/arpa. Application forms should be submitted by Friday, Aug. 20.

Little Free Library Installed In Parkesburg
Children Invited To Read To A Bunny BY FRANCINE FULTON
Denyce Tober has installed a new Little Free Library at her business in Parkesburg.
While some libraries host a therapy dog or offer the PAWS for Reading program where children may read to a canine friend, Moores Memorial Library in Christiana is now offering children a chance to read to rabbit named Bunny Bear. Bunny Bear visits the library along with her owner, 17-yearold Hannah Williams, on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 4:30 to 5 p.m. Children may stop in to read to the bunny and ask Hannah questions about the rabbit’s care. “They can read to her, hold her, pet her or just look at her,” said Hannah, who brings treats for the children to feed the bunny while she is at the library. “They can give her carrots and little peppermint treats and cucumbers.”

Library director Trish Vandenbosch explained that Bunny Bear’s visits came about while she was looking for a replacement for Murphy, the library’s former reading companion, who had passed away. “I was talking to Hannah’s mom, (Michelle), about wanting to have a library animal
that kids could visit and learn about,” Vandenbosch said. “Michelle said Hannah had a rabbit, a goat and chickens and (asked if) one of them (would) work. It is part of Hannah’s homeschooling program to bring in her bunny and interact with the kids. We miss Murphy and
are so glad to have Bunny Bear here.” Hannah said the dwarf bunny, which is 4 months old, enjoys eating bunny food, along with apples and carrots. Bunny Bear lives outdoors, but she does spend time with the family. “She has her own little pen outside and she has her food and water bowl,” Hannah noted. “We take her in a few times a week and let her sit on the couch with us and we sit with her and play with her.” Hannah noted that the bunny has only visited the library a few times but is already becoming popular with the young patrons. “You always have books that are too good to put back on your shelf and not share with someone,” said Denyce Tober, who has installed a new Little Free Library (LFL) at her business, Hidden Valley Self Storage, 105 Shamrock Lane, Parkesburg. “It’s a great way to share books that you enjoy,” she stated. The box, filled with free books for adults, youths and children, includes a sign summarizing the LFL program, “Take a Book. Share a Book.” Tober said she learned about the LFL program while working in the Octorara Area School District along with her friend Nina Thwaites, a district librarian. Tober first offered a book sharing box five years ago, but it had fallen into disrepair. She recently installed a new blue box that is made of weather-durable plastic that has the appearance of wood. Next to the box is a little flower garden and a chair. “You can go on the Little
Free Library website, and you can order kits of all kinds and all sizes,” Tober said. “I try to have all genres in the box. I want to cater to (all readers). I love to read. I love to see what people leave, so I (have new,) interesting books to read.” As the library steward, Tober will rotate the books inside the box on a regular basis so that frequent visitors will always have a different selection of books to choose from. “I think it’s a neat idea. Whoever thought of it was brilliant,” she said. Farm-fresh produce is now more accessible than ever to residents of Chester County due to the Fresh2You Mobile Market operated by the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB). The market is open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, with stops at Coventry Mall in Pottstown, the Phoenixville Senior Center, M&T Bank in Honey Brook, the Oxford Library and the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The market also parks on Third Avenue in Coatesville. As part of the new Senior Living Circuit, the market visits the following locations on Fridays: Brandywine Valley Active Aging, Coatesville campus; French Creek Manor, Phoenixville; Westminster Place, Parkesburg; and Whitehall Apartments, Spring City. On a recent Friday at Westminster Place, the Mobile Market was located in the center’s back parking lot offering a variety of selections of fruits and vegetables, including blueberries, cantaloupe, tomatoes, cucumbers, Swiss chard, carrots, squash, red beets, celery, onions and cabbage. “New this year to us are mushrooms from Mother Earth Farm,” noted Roberta Cosentino, CCFB healthy food access programs manager, noting that the mobile pantry started in 2015.

“We are basically a traveling farmers market,” Cosentino explained. “ We have two farmers on staff at the food bank who grow a lot of food that we carry. The rest we purchase from other local growers, so everything we have is locally grown and in season.” The Mobile Market is open to everyone regardless of income. All forms of payment, including cash, credit/debit cards, SNAP/EBT (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/electronic benefits
transfer) cards and WIC (Women, Infants and Children) vouchers, are accepted. Oxford First Friday Car Show Set
Rite Aid’s annual in-store customer fundraising campaign benefiting Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals will run through Saturday Aug. 28. All funds donated by customers will benefit 53 children’s hospitals providing lifesaving care and services for children in Rite Aid communities. This marks the 27th year for Rite Aid’s annual campaign, with customer support helping the company and its public charity, The Rite Aid Foundation, to raise and donate more than $100 million overall to CMN Hospitals. During this year’s campaign, customers can donate during every in-store transaction at Rite Aid. In addition to patient services, charitable care and equipment, donations help pioneer research that transforms how hospitals care for children not just in their youth, but throughout their lives. All donations made during Rite Aid’s campaign will stay

Habitat For Humanity Dedicates Homes In Coatesville During a recent dedication celebration, three families officially became homeowners through Habitat for Humanity (HFH) of Chester County. Current HFH of Chester County board president Michael Cappelletti presided over the event and introduced the guest speakers, many of whom were from area businesses that supported the project, as well as volunteers and local officials. “The home dedication is the culmination of all the good work that we do at Habitat,” Cappelletti stated. “Each time I come to these dedications and see the families that move into the
homes, it is the highlight of my career,” added Patrick Bokovitz, director of the Chester County Department of Community Development. Pastor Dan Krewson of Calvary Lutheran Church in West Chester offered the opening prayer. Chris Wiseman, executive director of HFH of Chester County, introduced the Pursell, Ortiz and Carter families, each of which was presented a Bible and a hammer to symbolize the work that went into building the homes. each month, the virtual gatherings featured wellknown speakers from around the world and attracted attendees from up and down the East Coast of the United States. Kobi Martin, pastor of children’s ministries at Hopewell Church in Elverson, participated, and he appreciated the opportunity to gain perspective. “For me, the most valuable thing … is a space to step out of all the little details of ministry to take a look at the big picture,” he said. “CONNECT provides the time and space to talk about what we are really trying to accomplish and hear the successes, failures, and struggles of other children’s ministries.” Mary Edwards, director of KidMin at Gateway Church, Parkesburg, noted that the timing of the presentation about “Online Children’s Ministry” at a November 2019 gathering well before COVID-19 restrictions were in place, was especially helpful to her. “Dr. Sarah Holmes Zoomed into our time together, (and) she taught us methods to engage children virtually through various teaching styles,” recalled Edwards. Once the pandemic hit, CONNECT became an invaluable resource. “(CONNECT) was super helpful during the pandemic when suddenly all the rules changed, and we all
needed to figure out how to redefine success, how to use new resources, and not lose our minds at the same time,” said Martin. He pointed out that CONNECT organizers calling in speakers from across the globe during virtual meetings was “super cool and encouraging.” Edwards said that her involvement in CONNECT has given her tools to strengthen her ministry and that she often returns from meetings with information she can use to train her KidMin leaders at the church. During the pandemic, she was inspired to offer a Remote Learning Center in the church, where students had a safe space that provided Wi-Fi and allowed students to complete school assignments while parents worked. Esther Zimmerman, interim chair of Church and Ministry Leadership at LBC, who currently heads up the program, said that the group will begin meeting in the Olewine Dining Commons at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on select Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Planned meeting dates include Sept. 16, Oct. 21, and Nov. 18. World Helicopter Day was founded in 2015 by Mick Cullen, an Australian, who stated that the event’s purpose was “to raise awareness of the contributions that helicopters make to our society and celebrate the diverse range of people that design, fly and support them.” The J-2 is a two-seat gyroplane built by the McCulloch
Aircraft Corporation in 1971. Volunteer Derek Hart directed the aircraft’s four-year restoration project. Some components had to be acquired from the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, Piasecki Aircraft, Olympic Tool in Aston, Folsom Tool in Aston, and others, and some were fabricated by the museum’s volunteers. The gyroplane was donated to
the museum by Light Horse Legacy and Marvin Wessel. Helicopter rides will be available for a per-person fee on a first-come, first-served basis. Stephen Briggs of Wells Fargo presented the organization with a check for $20,000 to go toward future projects in the Coatesville area. Mike Smith from the Giant Company presented the homeowners with grocery bags full of pantry staples and $3,500 to go toward food shopping. He also acknowledged that each family
would receive free delivery of their groceries for a year. Local dignitaries at the dedication event included Coatesville City Council president Linda Lavender-Norris, Coatesville City Council member Donald Folks and former HFH of Chester County board presidents Michael Leader and Andy Signore. Charles “Chip” Houston, who served as executive director of HFH of Chester County’s for 17 years and is now Coatesville assistant city manager, was also in attendance. Krewson provided the final prayer and blessed each home

In addition to an affordable monthly mortgage payment, each homeowner must complete at least 200 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build their home. “My drivers have been phenomenal through (the) COVID-19 (pandemic), and it has not been easy,” said Marie Glass, Paradise point person for Lancaster Meals on Wheels. Glass, who has been involved with the program for more than a decade, said that the lack of contact has been difficult for both drivers and those who receive meals. “People who were accustomed to visiting with clients can’t talk to them and may not even see them to know they’re all right,” she said, adding that the Paradise volunteer coordinators and drivers have not missed a day of deliveries throughout the pandemic. The Paradise Meals on Wheels program is affiliated Marie Glass, Paradise point person for Lancaster Meals on Wheels, is looking for a few volunteer drivers for the program. with Lancaster Meals on Wheels, which makes about 350 meals per day for area recipients. Drivers from pg 8 East, Paradise. Meals provided by the Lancaster program are delivered to TCC each Monday through Friday. One hot meal and one cold meal are included each weekday for each of about 25 clients. Two drivers pick up the meals on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and one driver handles the lighter Tuesday and Thursday routes. Meals are provided for a nominal fee. Clients receive five ounces of meat, five ounces of starch, and three ounces of vegetable a day, and meals are available for recipients who need to follow a customized diet, including those on lowsodium, diabetic, low vitamin K, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets, as well as soft diets, puree diets, and others. Hot meals may include ham and pineapple gravy or a shrimp dish, while cold meals may include a turkey and cheddar or other type of sandwich. Salads are sometimes served in lieu of sandwiches. Currently, the Paradise organization could use a few volunteer drivers. Volunteer time to drive totals about three hours a month. Drivers pick up meals at 8:30 a.m. at TCC and deliver on one of two routes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. “I have 20 drivers and right now I have no substitutes,” noted Glass. Since the Paradise delivery area extends to Lampeter, Glass noted it would be nice to have a driver from that area. The delivery range could include Georgetown, Kinzers, White Horse, the area west to the intersection of routes 896 and 30, and the region north beyond the village of Intercourse. The program allows many senior residents as well as others recovering from illnesses to remain in their own homes. Those wishing to help or to observe a route may call 717940-4640.
