Parkesburg Library, 105 West St., Parkesburg, will offer PAWS for Reading sessions. The program allows children to read to dogs so children may improve their reading skills. Relay For Life of Lancaster County will host Cruise for a Cure on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Memorial Park, 297 Park Ave., Quarryville. The event will include food, music, prize drawings, and a firetruck candy drop. The first 75 vehicles will receive dash plaques. Trophies for first and second places will be awarded for the following categories: car, truck, motorcycle, tractor, and semi, as well as Best in Show, Best Club Participation, and third place in the car and truck categories. Voting will end at noon, and winners will be announced at approximately 1 p.m. There is a registration fee per vehicle, though admission is free for spectators. Octorara Little League Team Plays In State Tournament

Members of the Octorara Area Little League (OALL) seniors team, ages 15 and 16, recently advanced to the 2018 Pennsylvania Senior League State Baseball Championship held July 11 to 15 at Showers Field in DuBois. This was the first time that a team from OALL advanced to the state all-star tournament.

Team members include Justin Bray, James Colligan, Ryan Dorbich, Sean Foster, Anthony Georgette, Christopher Hamrick, Zachary Hurrelbrinck, Nicholas Palmer, Kaden Salada, Kyle Stauffer, Weston Stoltzfus, Parker Wiley, Zane Wolownik and Christopher Zary. Fall Session Of GriefShare To Begin

“It turned out to be one of the best things I have ever done for myself,” said Donna Trace when recalling her decision to attend GriefShare, a support group for those dealing with the death of a loved one. “It is something we all have in common. We all lose people,

and we all need help.”

The fall session of GriefShare will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Gateway Church, 160 Cowan Road, Parkesburg.

Meetings will be held every Tuesday through Oct. 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. The meetings are facilitated by Paul and Twila Ranck.

The Jen Chapin Duo, composed of Jen Chapin, the daughter of the late singer Harry Chapin, and guitarist Jamie Fox, will return to the Friends Folk Club on Friday, Aug. 10. The concert will be held at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 116 Lancaster Pike, Oxford.

Doors will open at 7 p.m.; the concert will start at 7:30 p.m.

Food trucks will be on-site at 5:30 p.m., so audience members may arrive early to eat dinner outdoors under a canopy before the show.

Like her father, Jen is an accomplished singer and songwriter, with a commitment to fighting world hunger. Attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items that will be given to local food cupboards.

Jen’s music is described as “urban folk soul,” and she features musical storytelling in

her music, like her father, who was known for his 1970s hit “Cat’s in the Cradle.” Jen’s accomplishments include being featured on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” being honored by the USA Songwriting Competition, appearing on stage with Bruce Springsteen and opening for Bruce Hornsby and the Neville Brothers.

Tickets to the concert will be sold at the door.

The Friends Folk Club is an all-volunteer, community-run concert series. It has been in operation in southern Chester County for more than 20 years.

group that features biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics. Session topics include “Challenges of Grief,” “The Journey of Grief” and “Heaven.” The topic for the opening meeting will be “Is This Normal?”

Trace, who lost her husband, attended the complete GriefShare session both times it has been held at Gateway Church.

Prior to that, the sessions took place at FAMILIES in Gap. “I was at church and I heard them say they were going to have (GriefShare) here, and I thought I could use that. So I signed up that day,” Trace recalled. “A friend went with me to be my support. I wasn’t sure how I was going to react and what it was going to be like.”

Each session, which is held in The Venue meeting area in the church, begins with light snacks and beverages, including coffee and tea. Each person is then asked to introduce himself or herself and to share which loved one they have lost.

“We usually go around and say our first names, but if you don’t want to talk, you don’t have to,” said Trace. “You just say, ‘Pass.’”

Attendees then watch a DVD that features real-life stories of people who have experienced loss. Each participant receives a workbook that features a section for taking notes on each video as well as daily Scripture readings. “After the video, if there is a large group, we break up into smaller groups and discuss what we got out of the video,” said Trace. “Again, if you don’t want to talk, you don’t have to.”

Following the breakout sessions, the group comes together for closing comments and a prayer before the meeting ends.

GriefShare is open to people of all ages, including those who have experienced a recent loss and those who have been grieving for years. “We end up getting different ways of looking at things because people react differently and everyone is at a different point in their journey,” said Trace. “Everyone is in the same boat, and there is so much

People can attend GriefShare at any time because each meeting is self-contained; participants do not have to attend in sequence. “I got something out of each session,” Trace commented.

She pointed out that at times, friendship groups have formed outside of GriefShare.

“Over the summer, we had little potluck dinners once a month, so we could still support each other throughout the summer,” she said. “You can make some nice friends.”

Some people repeat the entire course or just the sessions that deal with a particular topic. Also, people who have a recent loss are welcome to attend the program again after some time has passed.

“I wanted to go through it again to see where I was and to see how far I’ve come from the first time,” Trace said, explaining why she participated in the course a second time. “You get little workbooks, and I could see the difference from the first time I went to the class to the second time. I’ve come further than I thought.”

Children’s Choir Posts Auditions registrations for two nonauditioned programs that develop vocal skills: Prelude Music for children in kindergarten through second grade and Choristers for grades two through eight. Classes are held Tuesday evenings from September through November and again in February through April. Information About Alzheimer’s Shared Aging is associated with a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that will not impact adults’ daily lives much at all.

While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline.

Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks.

But age-related cognitive

decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

The National Institute on Aging notes that only a very rare form of Alzheimer’s disease is inherited. Early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, or FAD, is caused by mutations in certain genes. If these genes are passed down from parent to child, then the child is likely, but not certain, to get FAD. So while many adults may be concerned about Alzheimer’s because one of their parents had the disease, the NIA notes that the majority of Alzheimer’s cases are lateonset, which has no obvious family pattern.

Studies of Alzheimer’s disease are ongoing, but to date

there is no definitive way to prevent the onset of the disease. Although researchers have not yet determined a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, adults can take certain steps to maintain their mental acuity into retirement.

Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America” found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) is holding auditions for the 201819 choir year. Auditions include matching pitch, singing in tune, using head voice, maintaining a melodic line while another line is being sung and singing one prepared piece of music.

MCCL serves more than 160 singers in Carol Choir, grades two to five; Concert Choir, grades six to eight; and Chamber Choir, grades nine to 12.

The choirs practice weekly throughout the school year in preparation for a concert series in early December and in the spring. Singers rehearse Tuesday evenings in late August through early May. The main stage at the Fiddlers’ Picnic will open at 10 a.m. with young performers from the Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, Del. Progressive bluegrass band Acoustic Turnpike is scheduled to play, as well as traditional bluegrass band Short Notise.

Another bluegrass group on the schedule, J-Tyme, is composed of members of the Horst family. “It’s a nice up-and-coming family playing bluegrass,�

Armstrong noted.

A somewhat different sound will be provided by autoharp artist David Kilby of Oxford. “He played for me early on in the second year (of the event), and I was pretty much blown away by his talent,� Armstrong said, adding, “I’m hoping to have a gospel singer at the end who has a good repertoire of music and has written songs.�

The work of organizing the event is a team effort between Armstrong, event organizer Jim Groff and West Sadsbury Township. “I always wanted to have something like this happen in Christiana,� Groff said. “When (former West Sadsbury Township supervisor) Jim Landis had approached me about using their park, I didn’t know anything about the park. We walked almost the whole property and I thought, ‘This is perfect for what I want to do.’�

While the main stage will be the center of activities, there will be many opportunities to venture into the woods for impromptu jam sessions. Those who would like to perform for the larger audience may sign up

for stage time as it is available.

All bluegrass, old-time and country styles are welcome in the allacoustic format. “I’ll have plenty of spots open for stage time,� Armstrong said. “I’d like to encourage (everyone) - especially the young people - to come out and play music.�

In addition to the music, there will be a free hayride around the grounds, a violin vendor and lots of food. Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church members are scheduled to return this year with their popular fish fry. “We try to keep it a community affair. All of the food vendors are local nonprofits,�

West Sadsbury Township supervisor Barry Edwards said. “The park is almost a hidden gem; people don’t know what’s back there. Once you get up there, I think everybody’s pleasantly surprised with what they find.�

Handicapped-accessible and musician parking will be available on-site during the event.

Others should follow the signs to off-site parking. There will be shuttles running from the park to the parking lots all day, plus there will be golf carts on the grounds for anyone who needs assistance getting around the park. There is full shade around the main stage, which will help to provide relief from summer temperatures. Attendees should bring their own blankets or lawn chairs for seating. No alcohol is permitted on the grounds.

Admission is free, but a parking fee will be collected.

While the Quarryville Fairgrounds will be the home of the 2018 Gap Relief Auction, the event’s name still pays homage to the location of the place where it started: at Sam Summers’ farm in Gap in 1948.

Set for Friday, Aug. 10, and Saturday, Aug. 11, the annual auction to benefit the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will be held in the Kreider Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds, located at 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville.

“It’s the longest continuing auction benefiting MCC. There are 40-some auctions across the United States and Canada,” said Ken Sensenig, assistant executive director of MCC East Coast.

“It’s a way people in their home communities and right here in southern Lancaster County can literally reach out and touch the world. MCC works in 56 countries around the world.”

The event will begin with a roast pork dinner to eat in or take out from 4 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 10.

This will also be an opportunity to preview auction items, including quilts, that will be sold on Aug. 11.

A blood drive will be held onsite on Aug. 10 from 4 to 8 p.m.

There will be a special singing performance by young people of the Weaverland Mennonite Conference from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 10, followed by MCC speaker Tom Wenger. His topic will focus on the need for material resources for southern Russia and Ukraine.

“There’s been social unrest and war in Ukraine,” Sensenig explained. “(Wenger) has been in Ukraine recently and will be drawing from that experience.”

Large furniture will be featured at 11 a.m., followed by special items at noon. Special items this year will include a new spring wagon and playground equipment. At 12:30 p.m., there will be an auction of sheds, gazebos and more, followed by the quilt auction at 1 p.m.

One unique item to be included in this year’s auction is a cedar chest with a bench top that features a scene of the first Gap Relief Auction from 1948 painted by Daniel Esh. The chest was created for the auction’s 50th anniversary year and was purchased by a member of the Summers family at that time. It returned to be sold again about nine years ago to a purchaser from North Carolina, and now it has returned again to the sale this year.

Proceeds from the auction are important to the fundraising of the Mennonite Central Committee, which provides relief, developing and peacemaking work in the United States and around the world.

La Comunidad Hispana (LCH) held a grand opening event on July 26 for its new Women’s Health Center. The facility is located in the Jennersville Professional Building at 105 Vineyard Way, Suite 200, West Grove.

The Women’s Health Center will provide services for women of all ages, including well woman exams, screenings, prenatal and post-partum care and behavioral health. The center expects to serve at least 1,000 patients this year.

Services are available to all, with a sliding fee scale for low-income patients. “ We welcome all women,” CEO Alisa Jones said. “No one is turned away.”

The event also included the unveiling of portraits in the waiting area created by local artist Darcie Goldberg, who took photographs of LCH patients, volunteers and staff members. In the photos, the subjects were asked to write down their “dream” on a chalkboard. The photos will

LCH also has medical locations in Kennett Square and Oxford.

“We wanted to bring specialty services to Jennersville,” Jones said. “We can serve our entire service area, which is southern Chester County.”

More space for more integrated care has been a long-term goal for LCH. “This is a dream come true,” women’s health director Catherine Domanska Elliott stated. “We now have a space to truly provide integrated care to the incredible women in this community.”

Looking toward the future, LCH plans to continue to grow.

“This is just the beginning of better access to care for southern Chester County,” Jones said. “The Jennersville building is halfway between our highest needs areas of Oxford and Kennett Square, and there is room to grow our services in the building. This fall, we plan to move our dental center to the same building as its services in the community continue to grow and expand. We need to

On the road to the state event, teams have to win at the district level and then at sectionals. “We did not have to play districts because the (other teams) bowed out, so (Little League) gave us an ‘advance to play’ waiver,” Brian explained.

Sectionals were held in Thorndale, and the OALL players defeated a team from Caln Little League in the final game of the event to advance to the state tournament.

At the state championship, the team from OALL won its first game in the tournament by a score of 4-3.

“We beat a team from Hollidaysburg in the first game - a team from western Pennsylvania,” said Brian. According to a game recap provided by Brian, the team from Hollidaysburg scored two runs in the bottom

Octorara finished with seven hits in the game, all singles, by seven players - Weston, Chris, Zachary, Kyle, Anthony, Zane and Sean. Sean also had two RBI. The win was credited to Kyle, the pitcher, and Zachary earned the save.

Following the win, Octorara was defeated by a team from Hanover Township and a team from Hatboro. Octorara finished fifth in the double-elimination state tournament.

Brian said that playing in the state event was exciting for the players and that games were broadcast live on the radio. “It’s a beautiful field; it’s actually a minor league stadium,” he said.

“It was quite the experience.”

Both coaches and players alike were pleased with the outcome. “No one from Octorara made it to the state tournament (before), let alone won a game (there),” said Brian. “Octorara was going against (larger Little League) programs. Our Little League is 250 kids, with 25 to 30 on the senior level. Some of these leagues have over 1,000 kids. Occasionally, the little guys get to win.”

He credits the team’s success to the players, coaches and parents. “It’s a combination of the players’ good chemistry, coaches and support by the parents and the community,” Brian said.

“A lot of (the players) are 15 years old and looking to return next year,” he added.

The Center for Digital Government (CDG) and National Association of Counties (NACo) have placed Chester County as ninth in the nation for best technology practices, including initiatives designed to save tax dollars, boost transparency, and focus on cyber security and citizen engagement. This is the third consecutive year the county has received the award.

Chester County was recognized for various efforts, including providing public access to information; prioritizing of information technology security; maintaining a

robust social media operation, which focuses on wellness issues; and improving its business processes to save money on technology purchases. The award was presented at the NACo Annual Conference in Nashville. Chester County Commissioner Terence Farrell and county chief information officer Glenn Angstadt accepted the award. Farrell recognized the county’s department of computing and information services and its digital communications personnel, along with members of other departments, for their efforts related to the county’s digital technology initiatives.

colon or rectal cancer or colorectal polyps; a family or personal history of other cancers, including ovarian, uterine, gastric, and breast; a history of inflammatory bowel disease; and a personal history of radiation to the abdomen or pelvic area as a result of cancer treatment.

The ACS’ new guidelines also issue recommendations about colorectal cancer screening methods. While colonoscopy remains the gold standard for both the detection and treatment of colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps, other options are available.

In its new guidelines, the ACS recommends choosing from six different types of screening tests. Screenings include a highly sensitive fecal immunochemical test, a highly sensitive guaiac-based fecal occult blood test, multi-targeted stool DNA tests every three years, a colonoscopy every 10 years, a virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography) every five years, and flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has released new recommendations for colorectal cancer screening guidelines, including the age screenings should begin for colorectal cancer. Previously, the screening age for a person at average risk was 50. The new guidelines have reduced that age to 45.

By lowering the screening age, the goal is to detect colorectal cancer earlier in patients who are at an increased risk for the disease.

Even with advances in detection and treatment, colorectal cancer is the number one abdominal malignancy that affects both men and women.

Roughly 1 in 20 Americans will develop this cancer, and getting a colonoscopy can help in the detection and treatment of it.

Last year, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that colon cancer rates increased from 1 percent to 2.4 percent annually since the mid1980s among adults ages 20 to 39. For the 39 years encompassed in the study, rectal cancer rates grew 3.2 percent annually for adults ages 20 to 39.

Colon and rectal cancer have, historically, affected older men and women. But the most recent research shows an increase in the number of adults in their 20s and 30s who are being diagnosed with these cancers, particularly rectal cancer.

Individuals already at an increased risk for colorectal cancer as a result of their lifestyle or family history may need to begin screenings at an earlier age. Individuals should talk to their health care provider about risk factors and what age they should begin screenings.

People who are at high or increased risk for colorectal cancer can include those with a family or personal history of

simmer for 10 minutes. Add 3 quarts water and simmer slowly over medium heat for 1 1/4 hours, skimming off any impurities, gray matter, and excess ingredients that float to the surface of the broth. Strain the broth through a fine-mesh strainer, discard the solids and simmer the broth again for 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and keep warm.

3. Preheat the oven to 185 F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Place the cod fillets on the pan and season liberally with the porcini salt. Place the pan in the oven for 38 minutes.

4. While the fish is baking, place a sauté pan over medium heat and add the butter, shallots, leek, and remaining 1 tsp salt. Sauté until tender but not browned. If the vegetables start to brown, add a couple of tablespoons of the broth.

When the leek is tender, add the kale and sage and sauté until the kale is soft.

5. Divide the kale among 4 serving bowls. Using a spatula, place the black cod on the kale, pour the broth on and around the fish, and serve. support to Pennsylvania municipalities and community groups.

The low-calorie recipe for Crab Salad-Stuffed Tomatoes from “ Weightwatchers: Cook It Fast” (St. Martin’s Griffin) can be whipped up in 20 minutes, making it an ideal meal for time-strapped women and men who want homemade meals without all the work that goes into more complex recipes.

Crab Salad-Stuffed Tomatoes (Serves 2) 1/3 cup orzo 2 large tomatoes 1 cup crabmeat, picked over for pieces of shell 1/3 cup chopped black or green olives 2 tablespoons crumbled reduced-fat feta cheese 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper Instructions: 1. Cook orzo according to package directions, omitting salt, if desired. Drain and rinse under cold water; drain again.

2. Meanwhile, cut a thin slice off tops of tomatoes; reserve tops. Using spoon, carefully scoop out seeds and pulp and reserve for another use.

3. Gently toss together crabmeat, olives, feta, dill, vinegar, salt, and pepper in medium bowl.

Spoon crabmeat mixture evenly into tomato shells and cover with reserved tomato tops.

A total of 100 golfers participated in the 11th annual Beiler-Campbell Realtors Charity Golf Tournament at the Kennett Square Golf and Country Club in early summer. More than $30,000 was raised for two local organizations: Family Promise of Southern Chester County (SCC) and the Justin W. Jennings Foundation. Family Promise SCC helps children and their families experiencing homelessness achieve lasting self-sufficiency and stability by providing shelter, meals, and comprehensive support services through a network of congregations and volunteers until they find sustainable housing. The Justin W. Jennings Foundation manages and operates Justin’s Beach House, a home in the Bethany Beach area where families dealing with cancer can have a place of respite. PA Child Abuse Hotline Posted All schools in Pennsylvania will be required to publicly display a poster containing the statewide toll-free number for reporting suspected child abuse, beginning in the 201819 school year. Known as ChildLine, the toll-free hotline number to report suspected child abuse in Pennsylvania is 800-932-0313.

Posting this critical information in schools will let students know they have somewhere to turn if they need to report

abuse or neglect that they have suffered or if they suspect another child is being abused or neglected. The poster is required to be displayed in a hightraffic, public area widely used by students. The poster also would include the address of the Department of Human Services’ website that provides information and resources related to child protection.

Sensenig Family Reunion Scheduled

Extension Sets Food Entrepreneurship Workshop

A Sensenig reunion and genealogy research day is planned for Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Hahnstown Mennonite School, 255 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata.

Sensenig (Sensenich, Senseny, Senseney, Sensiney) is a Swiss name found especially among the Mennonites of Lancaster County.

Attendees will be able to view their Sensenig genealogy and update their family information starting at 10:30 a.m. Attendees should also bring a hot and cold dish if they plan to stay for the meal at noon. A donation will be accepted to cover expenses.

The guest speaker, Mark Hostetter, will share about the “Beliefs and Practice of the Mennonite Immigrants.” There will be a committee meeting following the reunion for anyone who is interested in attending. Volunteers are welcome to help update their family’s genealogy.

The committee has compiled information on the descendants of Jacob and Maria Krey Sensenig, who immigrated from Switzerland around 1717. The committee will not add births, deaths, and marriages that occur after Dec. 31, but organizers will continue to update events occurring prior to Dec. 31.

The work will be offered on a computer disc for a fee. Plans to publish a Sensenig Encyclopedia are under discussion.

Maps will be available to visit the Sensenig Farm Cemetery located off of White Oak Road.
