Acommunity open house, featuring church tours, snacks and children’s activities, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon at Faith Community United Methodist Church (UMC), 332 Chester St., Atglen.
According to Noreen Stanomir and Kimberly Gray, co-chairs of the event, it has been more than 10 years since the church has held an open house. “It is an outreach to the community so they are aware of the presence of the church and what we have to offer,” said Gray.
Children will enjoy activities in the church’s downstairs fellowship hall while parents tour the sanctuary. “(Congregation member) Joann Hume will be taking care of the crafts with the children, which will free up the adults so they can ask questions,” said Stanomir. “We will take them upstairs for the
Visitors will note the church’s stained-glass windows, custom woodwork and a traditional choir loft. “(The church is) not very big, but it’s lovely,” said pastor Rebecca Brown.
The Sunday service at Faith Community UMC is at 9:30 a.m. Sunday school for children meets at the same time. “Currently our services are mostly a traditional worship style,” said Brown. “On

The 5K and the 1-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m., followed at
The ride averages between 50 and 100 motorcycles, according to event organizers. Last year, however, rain curtailed the ride, so about 30 riders attended. “We had a lot of food left over, which we donated to several charities in Parkesburg,” said Stephen Sinson of Cochranville, chapter president.
The ride attracts riders from various clubs and organizations, but individual riders are also welcome. “We have a core group of A.B.A.T.E. members, including those from Lancaster and Lehigh Valley,” noted Sinson. “A lot of clubs show up, including the Four Seasons Motorcycle Club from Delaware. Everyone is invited, club or not.”
Sinson emphasized that the ride benefits Pennsylvania (PA)

active farmers markets offering an array of agricultural and handcrafted goods, including fresh produce, meats, dairy, baked treats, flowers, pantry staples, and wines. These markets serve as channels for distributing locally made and grown products while fostering economic growth and providing consumers with fresh, nutritious food.
The proclamation also recognized the work of AgConnect, a county-supported initiative that offers funding, training, and promotional tools to strengthen local agriculture. Programs like AgConnect support direct-to-consumer sales and help cultivate a thriving, resilient farming community.
Farmers Market Week was created to honor the farmers, artisans, and organizers who make these markets possible and encourage residents to celebrate and support them.

who hail from all over Chester County. It is not necessary to own a motorcycle to join.
“We promote motorcycle awareness, and we work with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to promote safety, and we fight for freedom of our rights as motorcyclists. We also do outreach to the community and provide help and services,” said Sinson. “We will do motorcycle rides for different charities, and we support the VFW in Parkesburg.”

include one for Kacie’s Cause and another for the Oxford Neighborhood Area Services Center. “We had a drug awareness ride to benefit Kacie’s Cause in April. We will present a check at their annual car show (in the fall),”
Sinson noted. “We also have a food run every year for Oxford. This past year, we collected 2,000 pounds of food and $800 (in monetary donations).”
One of the club’s most recent events was its annual Ride for Aston in May, which also began and ended at the Parkesburg VFW. The ride helped pay for medical bills for a young man with several chronic illnesses, includ-

ing Prader-Willi syndrome.
The Chester County chapter meets on the first Sunday of the month at noon at the Parkesburg VFW. “That is a public meeting; everyone is invited to come see what we are about,” Sinson said.
To learn more about Chester County A.B.A.T.E. and the upcoming ride, search for “Chester County ABATE” on Facebook.
The upcoming event will take place rain or shine. “We are motorcycle riders. If it’s hot, we don’t care,” said Sinson. “Unless it’s dangerous, we will ride.”
The cross-country program hopes to build on the success of its annual Dire Wolf trail race held in October. “We were looking for another fundraising opportunity and to do something on our own home course,” said Rachel McGinnis, Octorara’s head cross-country coach. “(The course is)
behind the intermediate school and the Primary Learning Center, and it goes around the athletic fields. It is across the street from the high school, completely on the grass.”
The 5K run will be professionally timed. “We will have prizes for the first-place finishers and age group prizes,” noted McGinnis, adding that the kids’ race will be part of the Lancaster County Run for Fitness Race Series Championships.
This series is comprised of regional
The top five male and female finishers in each grade level are eligible to participate in the championship race to be held on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Overlook Park in Manheim Township.
“The top five in their grade and gender will get a little ribbon and can move onto the championship race in Manheim,” McGinnis said. “This is our qualifying race for the kids. Then they will go up against kids from the Lancaster-Lebanon League.”
“It’s a nice way to get the kids involved in running and maybe
potentially interested in cross-country running,” she added. Members of the Octorara boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams will assist with the running of the upcoming event. “The high school and junior high kids will all be out on the course providing directions and cheering. They will not be racing,” noted McGinnis. She said that the event is ideal for those preparing for the upcoming school year, as well as local 5K enthusiasts. “It is the Saturday before school

Like the Dire Wolf trail race, all proceeds will benefit the cross-country teams at both the junior and senior high level. “(Proceeds will be used for) warm-up shirts that are not covered by the school, food for races and any sort of travel (expenses) and anything post-season,” McGinnis noted. “Last year, our girls’ team made it to states. We used some of the funds we had raised for that. Most of it will go the end-of-season banquet.”
For more information about AgConnect’s programs and to access the interactive Chester County Farm Guide, visit www .go-agconnect.org or follow AgConnect on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn.
Octorara student-athletes are already preparing for the cross-country season. “The preseason starts on Aug. 11; that is the first day of practice,” McGinnis pointed out.
“Additionally, they have been running on their own all summer. You can’t come in the middle of August and expect to get in shape in time for the season. Our first scrimmage is on Aug. 16. We have another one on Aug. 22, which is also before school. The season goes through Nov. 1 if they make it to states.”
The Run Brave event will take place across the street from Octorara Junior-Senior High School, 228 Highland Road, Atglen. For more information or to register, visit www .runsignup.com and search for “Run Brave 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk.” Those who register by Saturday, Aug. 9, will receive a race T-shirt. a quarterly basis, we have guests musicians come, and we do a blended service - contemporary and traditional. During traditional days, we use the piano and sometimes the organ. When our guests are here, we use guitar and piano. We are working on having more blended-style worship services.”
“There is a time of fellowship with light refreshments on the first Sunday of the month,” added Gray.
The church is currently offering a Bible study for adults based on “The Chosen” television series. It meets on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. “‘The Chosen’ is a series that is about the life of Christ,” said Brown. “It’s the best series on the Bible and the New Testament that I have ever seen. It was created especially for people who don’t know anything about Christianity.”
The church is also an active member of Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO). “Being part of PCCO, we have ongoing fundraising and contributions that we make throughout the year,” said Stanomir.
“We just completed the backpack program (collecting items for youths) at The POINT, and next we will be doing the warm winter coat drive,” Gray added.
Brown noted that Faith Community UMC originally began as Penningtonville Methodist Episcopal (ME) Church. “The building has been here since 1853,” she said. “(The fellowship) hall) was put on in 1970 or 1971. This church has not continuously operated. It was closed for awhile until this congregation moved into the building. It was called Penningtonville ME Church, and later it was Asbury

According to the Philadelphia Area Archives of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the UMC, Asbury Community UMC was discontinued in 2002. The remaining congregants merged with Grace UMC of Coatesville, establishing the current active Faith Community UMC.
