A New Way to Keep Score

It takes a village. Octorara Area
Little League has its village.
The league’s homebase, Lions Park in Christiana, needed a new scoreboard on the main field. The new scoreboard, donated by Houghton Enterprises, was recently installed by a group of nearly a dozen dads on a warm Monday night at the park, 4 Sadsbury Ave., Christiana.
The new scoreboard is nearly twice as large as its predecessor and can be controlled remotely and wirelessly from anywhere around the field. Previously, wired cables had to be run from the dugouts to control the scoreboard remotely.
Annual Yard Sale Set in Gap

A communitywide yard sale will be held in Gap from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The sale will be held on Pequea Avenue; on Newport Avenue; on Bellevue Avenue; at Sunset Village; and at the Gap Fire Hall, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap.
Communitywide yard sales, organized by Jim Shaffer, were held annually in Gap for roughly 30 years. The effort was brought back last year on a smaller scale.
“The Houghton family has been what we call our grand slam sponsors,” said Craig Fackler, sponsorship
coordinator for the Little League. “The Houghtons have donated everything for the scoreboard. They have kids in the league; they want to see everything elevated.”
Octorara Area Little League rostered about 215 kids last season, ranging from T-ball to the senior
division, which goes up to 16 years of age. Many other areas have shifted away from a formal affiliation with Little League International, which has expanded Octorara Area Little League’s borders to include much of the Pequea Valley and Solanco school districts.

The Chester County chapter of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education (A.B.A.T.E.) organization will hold its annual bike ride and picnic to benefit Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors on Saturday, Aug. 22, beginning and ending at the Parkesburg VFW (Post 4480), 406 W. Fourth Ave., Parkesburg.

“It is really just trying to revitalize the yard sales in Gap,” local resident Paula Diem said. “It always ran with Rough and Tumble week, so it used to be a three-day yard sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.”
Last year, the community tried the sale for just two days. Roughly 20 to 25 homes participated, although Diem would love to see it go back to the 50-plus homes that took part in the sale’s glory days.
Diem said that last year, most of the homes that participated had items that would typically be found at a yard sale, including old toys, books and kitchenware.
“There’s new faces, new families in Gap,” Diem said. “So lots of new things that they can clean out and get rid of.”
Those outside of Gap who would like to participate in the sale are welcome to set up at the Gap Fire Hall, Diem said.
“It is a nice community thing that everybody gets so involved,” she said. “We just really want to get it back out there so that people know that we’re having it.”

The new scoreboard cost the Houghton family approximately $7,000, Fackler said. Summers & Zim’s donated electrical hardware for the scoreboard, while J&D Smucker Construction provided parts for the scoreboard’s base. Dutch-Way Hardware also assisted with parts for the project.
The gameday experience is strong at Lions Park. Behind home plate sits a two-story building that houses a robust concession stand and press box. Three of the four fields at the complex have covered and enclosed dugouts, as well as a fence. Two of the fields also currently have working scoreboards, while parts from the previous scoreboard on the main field will be repurposed for one of the secondary fields.
Another major recent improvement on the main field was a brand-new sound system, donated by Woerth Motor Company. The system allows songs to be played during breaks in action and gives the ability to make announcements for the whole complex. With the sound system, the players at Octorara Area
Little League have a unique privilege that is rare at any level of amateur baseball: walk-up songs. The kids get to choose their own song to be played when they approach the plate; some kids choose classics, while others select songs by contemporary acts like Imagine Dragons and AJR.
“It’s a little bit of everything,” Fackler said.
Fall ball registration is open for all divisions and can be found online at www.octoraralittleleague .org. T-Ball and “Minors” division registration is free, while older divisions carry a nominal cost. The season will open on Saturday, Aug. 22, and run through Halloween.
Even with the modern improvements, Lions Park still carries the traditional, classic vibe of local youth baseball. Sponsorship banners adorn the outfield fences, and local nonplay -
ing kids always seem to find ways to have fun around the park on gamedays.
The park is a strong foundation to carry the organization into the future.
Denim Kurtzhals, mayor of Atglen, was one of the volunteers involved with the erection of the scoreboard. Kurtzhals is also the vice president of Octorara Area Little League and manages the organization’s “Junior” division team.
“I think it really helps (the kids) feel like the community supports them,” said Kurtzhals. “Baseball players are definitely appreciative of that.”

Making Sure Kids Have What They Need

Pequea Valley School District and the Factory Ministries have once again partnered up to ensure that kids in the area have everything they need ahead of the new school year.
The two entities will hold their annual Back to School Supply Shop on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the gym at the Factory, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise.
The program offers backpacks, notebooks, pencils, folders and a vast array of other supplies to students in need. Families must sign up for a shopping slot in advance; there will be five slots every 15 minutes within the allotted window.
“This is our fifth year running the program,” said Lisa Eckert, director of early learning at Pequea Valley. “In previous years, we would just collect backpacks and kind of hand them out to families who needed extra supplies. We decided to start doing it this way just to let our students pick out the things that they like and have more of a choice in what they want.”

In the initial year of the program, it was offered concurrently with the summer Lunch and Learn program, which is held every Wednesday at Paradise Park for the majority of the summer.
The switch to being a standalone program was done partially to ensure that it was available to everyone in the community.
“It just got bigger and bigger,” Eckert said. “We wanted to make sure it was offered to anybody in the community versus just the families that were used to coming to the Lunch and Learns.”
Aside from the typical school supplies, brushes, combs, body wash, toothbrushes, deodorant and other hygiene supplies will be offered at the event. Certain items will only be available for students of a certain age,

Spring Garden and Bethania

In 1743, George Gibson built a general store on land purchased from Penn descendants named Spring Garden. It is uncertain when the name Spring Garden was attached to the little village that arose as pioneers moved ever farther into the forests. Most probably, the name stems from the Spring Garden Hotel that John Gamble established just four years later. The area soon attracted many other settlers. The valley had so many springs that each family could enjoy their own spring in the cellar to keep meat, milk, and butter cool.
As the village grew, it gradually became a business town with a furniture store and a blacksmith shop. That first general store would eventually also house the local post office, called Ledger. Not until 1954 did competition from larger grocery outlets force closure of the store after two hundred years of serving the community.
Henry Horst had torn down the original hotel in the mid-1800s and built a new brick hotel that served the public until 1915. Today it is
a private home. The historical society has been gifted an elaborately decorated lady’s side-saddle found in the old barn.
In 1930, some of the ladies of the village formed the Moonbeam Social Club when their men began gathering nightly at the general store to solve the world’s problems. In 1980, the ladies celebrated their 50th anniversary. This writer could not find any information on whether the Moonbeam Club still exists.
The first patent (deed) issued for 243 acres about a mile and a half west of Gap was awarded to George McDill in 1786, to become known as Bethania. The United States was in a postwar economic depression, facing high taxes, severe debt, and widespread farm foreclosures. McDill began to clear the land but, in 1797, sold the whole tract to George Leech, a member of the Leech family who built many taverns in the Gap area. He in turn began parceling the acreage into lots for sale. By 1825, the hamlet boasted 12 houses, with each owner operating an average of two businesses.
In the 1820s, the village (later known as Puddintown, then Jacksonville) served as a local commercial hub within the largely agrarian Salisbury Township. Businesses during this decade were primarily artisan-led or water-powered, serving the immediate needs of local farming families before the major industrial shifts of the mid-19th century. Typical businesses operating in Puddintown and its immediate vicinity during the 1820s included grist and lumber mills; a blacksmith shop; and a general store, with the post office located inside. Limestone burning, for both agricultural and commercial uses, was a recurrent farm sideline.

This year’s lunch will be cold cuts. Instead of premade sandwiches, all of the ingredients will be laid out, and hoagies can be made to each individual’s choosing. The Parkesburg Wawa will also provide breakfast before the ride.
The travel plan for this year’s ride is around 55 miles, starting in Parkesburg and looping around through Hockessin, Delaware, and Kennett Square. The group makes every effort to keep riders safe during the event, sticking to smaller roads while relying on local municipalities to block major intersections at various different
points of the ride.
“The cool thing is that we have assistance from many fire polices,” explained chapter chaplain and event chair Jeff Smack. “It’s almost that once we leave Parkesburg VFW, you don’t have to put your feet down.”
The ride has been held for at least 12 years, according to event organizers. Depending on the weather, between 50 and 100 bikers typically participate.

“Everyone on their staff
is volunteer, so all the money goes to Pennsylvania wounded warriors who may be in need of housing, car payments, utilities, food,” Smack said. “When we first started it, there were not many groups that did these fundraisers for (them), and now there are dozens and dozens.”
The Chester County chapter of A.B.A.T.E. is a nonprofit organization that has been working to protect motorcyclists’ rights in the commonwealth since 1983.
Among its major initiatives are posting “Watch for Motorcycles” signs found around the area. The group also organizes annual rides for drug awareness and the Neighborhood Services Center in Oxford.

The DD-214 is a Department of Defense document issued upon a service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this document, there could be significant delays when a veteran seeks benefits earned through his or her military service. The DD-215 is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214.

The Factory and the school district collaborate for many programs throughout the year, including the aforementioned Lunch and Learn effort.
“I think having those opportunities is really helpful for the school,” Eckert said. “We want our kiddos reading; we want them doing enrichment activities over the summer. That way, we don’t get as much of that summer lag or going backwards when we’re starting off the school year.”

Chambers pursued many other businesses, including herbal medicine and pottery, but his printing press was the most prolific. With his death in 1859, Jacksonville as a commercial center and growing town died with him. Today farming is the principal industry with home commercial businesses on the side.
