“You always have books that are too good to put back on your shelf and not share with someone,” said Denyce Tober, who has installed a new Little Free Library (LFL) at her business, Hidden Valley Self Storage, 105 Shamrock Lane, Parkesburg. “It’s a great way to share books that you enjoy,” she stated. arm-fresh produce is now more accessible than ever to residents of Chester County due to the Fresh2You Mobile Market operated by the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB). The market is open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, with stops at Coventry Mall in Pottstown, the Phoenixville

Senior Center, M&T Bank in Honey Brook, the Oxford Library and the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The market also parks on Third Avenue in Coatesville. As part of the new Senior Living Circuit, the market visits the following locations on Fridays: Brandywine Valley Active Aging, Coatesville campus; French Creek Manor, Phoenixville; Westminster Place, Parkesburg; and
Whitehall Apartments, Spring City. On a recent Friday at Westminster Place, the Mobile Market was located in the center’s back parking lot offering a variety of selections of fruits and vegetables, including blueberries, cantaloupe, tomatoes, cucumbers, Swiss chard, carrots, squash, red beets, celery, onions and cabbage. “New this year to us are mushrooms from Mother Earth Farm,”
noted Roberta Cosentino, CCFB healthy food access programs manager, noting that the mobile pantry started in 2015. “ We are basically a traveling farmers market,” Cosentino explained. “We have two farmers on staff at the food bank who grow a lot of food that we carry. The rest we purchase from other local growers, so everything we have is locally grown and in season.”

Smoker: Drop the corn into boiling water for seven to 10 minutes. You can butter and salt it to taste when it comes out. Cosentino: The bigger the kernels and/or the older the corn, the longer you should cook it. I generally find if it sticks to your teeth, it’s probably overcooked! C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : Can you grill corn on the cob? If so, should you keep the shell on? C o s e n t i n o : This is my favorite method for cooking corn. I peel the outer leaves, but keep the inner leaves on, and grill the corn until the husk has charred. Hopefully, some of the kernels char as well. In a pinch, I’ll also do this under the broiler. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : How long will fresh corn be available this summer? S m o k e r : From now until the end of August, we will have corn galore. We will be picking (corn) up to the middle of September, approximately Sept. 15.

If not preparing the corn right away, keep the ear in its husk and keep it in the refrigerator. Corn can be frozen for future use by cooking ears for one to two minutes in boiling water, cutting the kernels off each cob and then placing the kernels into freezer bags while removing as much air as possible from the bags. Petes’s Produce Farm grows produce, including corn, for the CCFB. Volunteers harvest the produce and donate it to the food bank for distribution to clients in need. Cleanup Recognized In Video Contest The Chester County Commissioners’ Office cleanup won second place in Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s 2021 Pick Up Pennsylvania video contest. The first-place winner was Senior Girl Scout Troop 21031 of Warrington, and third place went to the Penn Lake cleanup in Luzerne County. The winners are the participants who received
the most likes on Facebook during the voting period. Cash prizes were awarded. The contest was sponsored by Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association and the Department of Environmental Protection. Calvary’s Great Giveaway To Return Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) has invited the community to its Great Giveaway nearly every summer for about 20 years now. For a long time, the event was organized by church member Joyce Lacock, but when she retired from running it a few years ago, church staff took over the event. The giveaway was successful, attracting hundreds of attendees who formed lines that extended well into the church parking lot. Then came 2020, and COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible to hold the event. “I am so glad it’s back this year,” said Chris Lenhart, lead pastor at CMBC. This year’s giveaway, which will
feature free clothing, household items, books, and more, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise. The church is located at the corner where Mine and South Kinzer roads meet. Lenhart said that organizers began planning the event early this year, and that new or gently used items would start coming into the church in late July. Edie Weaver, one of the organizers oversees the process of accepting donations. “Edie wants it to be an item someone can use,” said Lenhart. “So she is pretty particular about what we will take.” Donations are sorted by volunteers the week before the giveaway. Items that will be available for free will include clothing

All forms of payment, including cash, credit/debit cards, SNAP/EBT (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/electronic benefits transfer) cards and WIC (Women, Infants and Children) vouchers, are accepted. Customers at the Mobile Market receive matching dollars in the form of Veggie Bucks that can be used for additional fruit and vegetables when shopping with SNAP/EBT. In addition to the fresh produce, there are recipes available that provide shoppers with new meal ideas, along with recipe bundles that provide the ingredients to make that week’s featured dish. “This week we are highlighting using the leaves of the celery,” Cosentino said. “You will rarely get celery this fresh when the leaves are still usable, still good, still tender
and super flavorful.” Visitors to the market can also learn how they can receive a voucher through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). If they qualify, applicants can receive $24 from the department to spend on Pennsylvania produce. The Mobile Market will be stationed at sites throughout the county through Friday, Nov. 19. According to Hess, the goal of the evening is to provide an engaging way to learn about both everyday and exceptional experiences of local Anabaptists. This year, Jesus Cruz, who has served as national program director of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and Myrna Smucker, former Lancaster Mennonite School teacher and author of “The Bird-in-Hand Story,” were chosen to speak. Hess explained that each was invited because of his or her contributions to Mennonite communities. “Each brings rich life experiences,” she noted. “They have pursued very different professional work, but a common thread is caring for people and meeting their needs.” In addition to his work for MCC, Cruz has had a varied career, which includes being an associate pastor. His work in the financial services field has most recently led him to working as a consultant for a Lancaster organization that
is opening a new credit union focused on underserved persons such as recent immigrants. Smucker earned her degree in education from Eastern Mennonite University before teaching English and German at Lancaster Mennonite High School. Tober said she learned about the LFL program while working in the Octorara Area School District along with her friend Nina Thwaites, a district librarian. Tober first offered a book sharing box five years ago, but it had fallen into disrepair. She recently installed a new blue box that is made of weather-durable plastic that has the appearance of wood. Next to the box is a little flower garden and a chair. “You can go on the Little Free Library website, and you can order kits of all kinds and all sizes,” Tober said. “I try to have all genres in the box. I want to cater to (all readers). I love to read. I love to see what people leave, so I (have new,) interesting books to read.”

DVGRR Receives Grant, Sets Meet-And-Greet Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) will hold its monthly “Meet and Greet the Goldens” from 10 a.m. to noon at its Golden Gateway facility, 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds, on Saturday, Aug. 14. The community may meet the golden retrievers and other dogs that are available for adoption. Staff will be on hand to answer questions, and food will be available for purchase. DVGRR has been recognized for its work in rescuing and rehabilitating puppy mill breeder dogs. Many of the senior dogs that arrive at the facility are retired breeder dogs from commercial breeding operations; others are those surrendered from previous owners due varied circumstances. A total of 240 motorcycles departed Gap at 9 a.m. and returned to the same area at approximately noon. Huey 823 departed Lancaster Airport, flew directly to the site of Brandon’s grave at Calgary Monument Church in Paradise and slowly circled the cemetery three times. Huey 823 then flew the same route as the motorcycles to the landing zone where the ride would end, and the helicopter arrived just before the motorcycles. The motorcycle ride was a fundraiser for the Corporal Brandon M. Hardy Memorial Fund, which awards $1,000 to service members who have completed basic training. These funds can be used at the

After more than a year of staying home, social distancing and Zoom learning, parents may be inclined to overscheduled their children during the summer to make up for lost time. However, educational psychologist and author Michele Borba has said that parents should resist this temptation. Borba offered suggestions of activities that are free or lowcost and are known to boost resilience and reduce stress. Parents can embrace oldfashioned, unplugged play. Play allows children to use their imaginations, and it may enhance brain development and social-emotional skills, and promote executive functions, thereby helping children to pursue goals, ignore distractions, and reduce stress. Parents are encouraged to set up a stress box. If left unchecked, stress can affect children’s learning potential, friendships, physical health, emotional well-being, and ability to thrive. Families can create a stress box by filling a shoebox or other container with stress reducers such as a notepad and pencil for drawing or writing; a small toy ball; modeling clay; an MP3 or CD player filled with relaxation sounds; bubble blowers; and
glitter jars. They may also download an app that teaches mindfulness. One of the best-known mood elevators is nature. Families can take a 20-minute stroll or sit in a place that makes them feel in contact with nature. Parents should remember to leave their cell phones inside. Hobbies can be a healthy diversion from stress and a good way for children to recharge, get away from everyday pressures, and learn to enjoy their own company. The trick is to find an activity that supports a child’s interests and abilities and that they can do alone. Parents can teach playground games, such as “Mother, may I?” or duck, duck, goose, and other unplugged activities, such as marbles, jacks, and hula hoops. Children can then share these games with their friends. Playground games allow children to have fun anywhere, recharge and learn to get along with others. Parents should encourage their child to read. Fictitious worlds can help children deal with real-life problems and promote well-being. Books may also stretch children’s attention span, help them focus, and teach them how to be self-sufficient.

Boxes are not only free, but they also can provide hours of imaginative play. Give children some marking pens and masking tape, and they can make igloos, forts, villages, castles, garages, storefronts, and hotels. Provide flashlights and children can turn the boxes into caves. Children should learn to enjoy spending time alone. They should learn to be selfdirected and able to entertain themselves without programming or a lot of unnecessary supervision.

Individuals are reminded to practice sun safety. Whether heading to the beach or the backyard, it is important to protect skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. Patient First physicians have several suggestions to protect the skin. A broadspectrum sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF should be used, even when it is cloudy. Sunscreen should be applied 15 to 20 minutes before going outside. Widebrimmed hats can help shade the neck and face, but they do not offer complete protection, and sunscreen should be used on these sensitive areas. Lightweight sun-protective clothing should be worn. Long sleeves and long pants also offer protection from the sun. Sunglasses that block UV rays should be worn. Sun damage accumulates and occurs even when people are not actively trying to soak up a few rays. Whether walking the dog or mowing the lawn, sun damage adds up over time. Newborns and children are especially sensitive to the sun’s rays. Protecting their skin is crucial.
