Chester County Connect Care (CCCC) will hold its fourth annual Summer Picnic, featuring free food, games, live music and more, on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at West Brandywine Township Park. The
event will also be a celebration of CCCC’s 40th anniversary.
Among the free picnic fare will be cheeseburgers, hot dogs, soft pretzels, fresh funnel cakes, watermelon, popcorn and snacks. Kona Ice will be offered courtesy of Kona Ice of Southern Chester County.
Scheduled to perform in the
park’s amphitheater is Bryar Bullock, worship leader from Freedom Life Church in Atglen. Also featured will be professional face painting by Joyful Canvas and an Agape Gang children’s puppet show. Children’s activities will include miniature carnival games with prizes and organized sports activities.
For the first time, the event will include a cornhole tournament. “A lot of the (activities) are mini carnival games for kids, so we are doing the first annual cornhole tournament that we hope will get more adults involved,” said Kirstyn Veneziale, CCCC marketing and event coordinator. Prizes will be

According to Matthew Waltman, adopting children was a “staple” with his family of origin. “My sister is adopted from China,” he said. “(We were part of) a commu nity with other families adopting internationally, and there were play groups and get-togethers specifically to celebrate adoption and make (the adoptees) feel special for what made them different,” Matthew shared. With that background, it was
only natural for Matthew and his wife, Nicole, to opt for adoption with their own family. “I knew that was something I wanted to do for sure,” said Matthew. With Nicole and their 4-year-old daughter on board, the Waltmans decided to pursue private adoption, and they are currently working through that process.
Adoption is not an inexpensive endeavor. Unlike with biological children, there is no insurance that covers part of the cost. To offset the expenses, Matthew and Nicole

There is still time for the community to enjoy the free SPARK in the Park summer program, which is offered by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Atglen Community Park, 400 Ridge Ave., Atglen. The final SPARK in the Park events for the
season will be held on Aug. 6 and Sept. 3.
SPARK in the Park began in June with bingo, followed by a “Splash Down at the Park” event in July. “We had a water slide in July, and we had well over 100 people - kids and families,” said congregation member Pat Softchin, SPARK program coordinator. “August will be open mic.”
All performers are welcome, including singers, dancers and those who play the guitar and other instruments. No registration is necessary, with the exception of those who need special equipment, such as music stands or multiple microphones. “We will start at 7 p.m., and if we have enough acts, we will go way past the hour,” said Softchin.
Past acts have included a drummer and guitar players. “We’ve had individual singers and duets,” Softchin
pointed out. “We have had all different musical genres and people of all ages. Last year, we had a 4-year-old sing a Disney song.”
On Sept. 3, attendees will be able to paint a picture and take it home with them. “A local artist will do a demonstration. I will have limited materials like watercolors and pastels,” said Softchin.
SPARK in the Park is open to everyone, not just church members. “It’s a community outreach,” Softchin added.
SPARK in the Park began in 2022. The program was designed be an offshoot of Midweek Encounter, which meets on Wednesday nights at the church from September through May. That program includes a children’s ministry at 5 p.m. and a free open table dinner at 6 p.m. This year, Midweek Encounter will begin on Sept. 10.
“We have a children’s service from 5 to 6:15 p.m. and that is when we provide dinner,” Softchin explained. “If the children decide to stay, we have children’s choir practice from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m.” Programming is also offered for adults. “In the past, we have done the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace (program) and a Women of the Bible (study),” noted Softchin. “We don’t have a specific Bible study, but we do rotate themes.”
Midweek Encounter is held in place of traditional Sunday school. “Our church was formed to accommodate the children in the community for Sunday
school. With COVID, we did away with Sunday school, so we tried to get back to a Sunday school module (with Midweek Encounter),” Softchin stated. “We are approaching our 175th anniversary in 2026, so serving children (is still a priority).”
Penningtonville Presbyterian Church is located at 406 Main St., Atglen. For more information, call 610-593-2173 or visit www .penningtonvillechurch .org or www.facebook.com/ PenningtonvillePC. In the case of rain, cancellation information about SPARK in the Park will be posted on the church’s website and Facebook page.

Music at The Homestead will be held at 3700 Holly Drive, Gordonville, on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 5 to 9 p.m. There is an admission charge to enjoy the live music of three acts. Food trucks will be present selling a variety of items. Yard games will be set up for attendees to enjoy, and beverages will be available by donation. A silent auction will be held as well.
“Music is something that I love,” shared Nicole, who has lined up bands of different genres to play at the event. “I have a lot of family members and friends who are musicians.”
pottery, and a professional photography session. Nicole shared that a spa package from Darla’s Hair Care and Spa and a consult and adjustment by a local chiropractor will be auctioned off, as will a massage.
More information about the event may be found at https://tinyurl.com/bp 64cv3w. Organizers request that those planning to attend register ahead.
The Waltmans hope to raise $10,000 from the event. They noted that The Homestead is a family-owned business and that family members will be playing the music and family and friends will donate items for the auction. “It’s family, and it’s personal,” explained Nicole. “But I want the community to come out and support us and enjoy an evening of music and for it to be an enjoyable time for everybody.”

The Peach Bottom Boys is a bluegrass group made up of Nicole’s cousins. Ryan and Alyssa Mayersky will play country music at the event. “(Alyssa is) my sister, and my brother-in-law (is Ryan),” said Nicole. “He is an up-and-coming country musician.” Members of the third band are related to Matthew. “30 East is Matthew’s cousin’s band,” explained Nicole. “They all do gigs on the side.”
Food at the event will be offered for purchase by Nano Burger, The Eggroll Lady, and Joe on the Go Coffee Co. For dessert, Penny’s Ice Cream will be onsite. “Penny’s is a favorite at The Homestead,” shared Nicole.
The silent auction will feature a variety of donated items. “We will have a large gift basket from the Speckled Hen,” shared Matthew. Other items that will be up for bids will include artwork,

“I first saw one of these in Luzerne, Switzerland; they call them flower columns,” said Robin Coffroth, when describing the new flower tower that he created at Moores Memorial Library. “As soon as I saw one, I said we have to have one of these in Christiana.”
Robin, president of the library board of directors, and his wife, Kathy, created the 6-foot-tall flower tower, which is covered mostly in inpatients along with petunias and other flower varieties.
They began the effort to replicate the flower column this past spring by contacting officials in Switzerland. “We were on a river boat cruise. We started in Amsterdam and went down the Rhine River to Switzerland. This (flower tower) is 6 feet high, and theirs there were 3 or 4 feet higher,” Robin explained, noting that flower columns are prominent along the city streets in Switzerland. “They have a whole department of people who do this. I picked a name in Luzerne city government and sent an email. (The email recipient) put me in touch with the head of urban greenery.”
Next, Robin had a frame constructed by local metal fabricator John Miller. “(The
contact) in Switzerland sent me a picture of one without anything on it - just the frame. I took that picture to J. Miller Ag Equipment in Christiana,” he noted. “I asked if (John) could make me one, and he liked the challenge. He made one that was perfect.
After securing the frame in the existing flower bed near the library’s entrance, the couple began to fill it with potting soil in preparation for planting. “It’s
a metal frame, wrapped with landscaping fabric. It is hollow inside, and we filled it with dirt,” Robin said, noting that the frame weighs 180 pounds. When it took too much soil to fill the frame, they found a handy substitute. “We got good potting mix, and we found out we were using a lot, and we only needed the dirt on the perimeter. So, my wife and I filled in some of that space
with pool noodles. We happened to have a bunch of pool noodles, and they work because they don’t absorb water,” he said, adding.
“We cut little holes in the fabric, and we got flats of inpatients, and each (plant) went into a little hole.”
Robin also devised a way to water the flower tower when rain does not provide water for it. “There is 4-inch perforated pipe that runs the whole way down to water it,” he noted. “The tower is watered from the top, and it seeps out
through the rest of it.”
Robin, who previously planted the library’s flower beds, is pleased with how the flower tower turned out. “It was an experiment, and we tried it, and it has worked pretty well so far,” he stated, noting that he and Kathy plan to replant the flower tower next spring.
“The patrons love it,” added library director Trish Vandenbosch.

While COVID-19 can still be a serious illness like pneumonia or the flu, the pandemic as we experienced it several years ago is over.
It was not too long ago, however, that masks were part of our daily lives and new phrases came into existence, like social distancing and contact tracing, which is letting people know you were exposed to COVID. We quickly had to master the art of meetings held via Zoom and many people began working at home.
Penn State Extension and the Chester County 4-H livestock clubs will hold the Chester County 4-H Fair and the 28th annual Livestock Sale at the Chester County 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. The Chester County 4-H Fair will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2, and Monday to Saturday, Aug. 4 to 9, with the Livestock Sale occurring on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m.
Prior to the sale, registered buyers are invited to enjoy a complimentary picnic-style meal hosted by the 4-H livestock club members from 4 to 6 p.m.
This annual event is an opportunity to purchase high-quality beef, pork, lamb, and goat; to support the next generation of agricultural leaders; and to explore non-animal projects and club displays in the exhibition area.
The complete schedule of Chester County 4-H Fair livestock shows is as follows: Aug. 4, Market Goat Show at 3 p.m.; Aug. 4, Breeding Sheep and Market Lamb Show at 4 p.m.; Aug. 4, Market Steer & Breeding Heifer Show at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 5, Market Swine Show at 6 p.m.; Aug. 6, Supreme Livestock Showmanship Contest at 2:30 p.m.; Aug. 6, Chester County Spirit of 4-H Award Presentation at 5:30 p.m.; and Aug. 6, Chester County Livestock Sale at 6 p.m.

During the pandemic, we were not allowed to walk the mall, visit our loved ones in the hospital or at a retirement community, dine out at a restaurant, get our hair cut at the salon or go to church. Brides and grooms had to cancel weddings, and many businesses suffered because they could not be open. Only cardboard cutouts were allowed to attend professional sports games.
For students, the pandemic meant no in-person classes, no senior prom, no class trips. I remember my son doing jumping jacks in the kitchen during virtual gym class.
We stopped shaking hands; we

Those who attend the event will also be able to learn about CCCC, a pregnancy care center that offers no-cost medical services for individuals facing unexpected pregnancies.
“We will give out information in a welcome bag, and tables will be set up where (guests) can come and learn about us,” Veneziale noted. “It’s our 40th anniversary, so this will be a big celebration for us.”
There will be an opportunity for people to enter a drawing to win a monetary prize. “My goal is for the community to get to know who we are, but we ultimately are a nonprofit and need funds to keep doing what we do,” Veneziale noted.
She said that the event is free thanks to business sponsors and support from 10 area churches.
“We wanted it free to the community,” said Veneziale. “In the past, we had food trucks, but that can be expensive, so we are doing the food. Most of it was donated by sponsors.”
CCCC, a nonprofit organization, was formerly known as Chester County Women’s Services for 37
loaded up on hand sanitizer. And there was a shortage of everyday necessities like toilet paper and bread.
The only outings we were allowed to enjoy, which became the highlight of the day, were trips to the grocery store, where the aisles were marked “one way” with arrows on the floor.
Our focus was on the dreaded color-coded system of shutdown. Red meant nothing was open, while yellow meant that things eased up a bit and green was the “oh, happy day” phase when businesses were allowed to reopen. This system varied state by state. I personally know two women who took a road trip to West Virginia one weekend to have their hair cut because that state went yellow before Pennsylvania did.
There are still positive remnants of the pandemic that have not left us. Much of what we did to pass the time during the lockdown has thankfully become part of everyday life today. Many people continue to focus on family activities like putting together puzzles or breaking out the old board games like Monopoly, Pictionary and Trivial Pursuit.
We continue to walk our dogs a lot, along the way meeting neighbors with their dogs, including neighbors from surrounding streets. We continue to visit local historic sites
years before the name changed in 2022. The new name is meant to reflect the agency’s effort to provide assistance to all family members, not just mothers.
CCCC offers free limited ultrasounds for expectant mothers and provides basic pregnancy care such as prenatal vitamins and free nurse consultations throughout the course of the pregnancy. Parenting classes are offered, as well as Bible studies and peer counseling. Families can use the points they earn from attending classes to “purchase” parenting essentials from the CCCC Parenting Boutique.
CCCC offices are located in Coatesville, Kennett Square and West Chester. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, visit www.ccconnectcare.org or call 610-383-0930.
The GPS address for West Brandywine Township Park is 198 Lafayette Road, Coatesville. For more information about the picnic or to register, visit https://ccconnect careinfo.org/picnic. Registration for the picnic and the cornhole tournament is encouraged, but walk-ins will be welcome.
Attendees should bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating. Updates about the picnic will be posted at www.facebook.com/ ccconnectcare.
and parks that we discovered while on lockdown. We have found many a walking path in the area around scenic streams and waterways. Some of us have continued with the hobbies that were resurrected during the pandemic, including crocheting or knitting or doing crafts.
We continue to Zoom with friends and relatives from out of state as a way to keep in touch. Virtual church also continues to be an option, which provides an option for people who are elderly, are unable to drive or are home recovering from an illness to attend Sunday services.
The pandemic taught us how to pivot, which became a popular word during the time, and to make the most of the resources we had at home. It also taught us to appreciate living each and every day.
Although life is not perfect, today we can shop anywhere we want at stores with well-stocked shelves, attend church, visit loved ones, marry the love of our life, go out for a bite to eat or an ice cream sundae, take in a Phillies game or make an in-person appointment with a doctor when we are not feeling well. Students can attend classes in person, play sports and enjoy the senior prom. Best of all, we can get our hair cut without a trip to West Virginia.
