ADiamond Girl feature twirler.
That’s a mouthful, but it means so much to Octorara alumna and Parkesburg native Mallorie Gurel.
Twirling was in Gurel’s blood. Her mom was a baton twirler, which gave her a natural interest in twirling, dancing and cheerleading when she was growing up. She started twirling when she was 9 years old.
“She introduced it to me when I was 7 or 8,” Gurel said. “Then I would beg her to put me in lessons.”
She eventually connected with Wendy Rhoads at Ab-Salute Twirling in Ephrata and began formal training, eventually competing in competitions. Gurel never twirled with Octorara’s marching band, but she was the feature twirler in all her four years at Temple University as part of the school’s Diamond Band.
“I’d say it’s kind of like a mix of dance and gymnastics, kind of like a cheerleader position,” Gurel said. “You’re trying to engage the audience, and it’s a big way to show
Second Annual “Battle of the Boroughs” Underway

Three boroughs will compete for the trophy, but the real winner of the Battle of the Boroughs food drive will be the local community.
After the first Battle of the Boroughs food drive was a resounding success in 2025, Parkesburg, Atglen and Christiana are once again collaborating for a friendly competition to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC).
It began on June 24 and will run
through Tuesday, Aug. 4, which doubles as National Night Out.
“It felt really good to see the community come together and have a lot of fun,” said April Brade of the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Committee.
Each borough has one individual designated as its battle leader. Brade fills that role for Parkesburg, while Jennifer Grossman reprises her role for Atglen’s Parks and Recreation Committee. Christiana’s leadership has changed hands this year, going from the Parks and

Karly Burkhart was only five months removed from treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma when she found out that her youngest son, Grant, was being diagnosed with FOXG1 syndrome, an ultrarare genetic disorder that affects less than 2,000 individuals worldwide.
Many children with FOXG1, sometimes referred to simply as “FOX”, never speak properly. Furthermore, 70% of children with the syndrome never walk independently.
Grant and his older brother, Logan, live on a dairy farm in the Southern End with their parents, Burkhart and Troy Kirk. As you can imagine, making an old farmhouse handicapped-accessible will be no small, nor cheap, challenge for the family.
“It’s a big fear of ours on how we’re going to figure out how to get him around the farm and the rough terrain,” Burkhart said. “This is our lifestyle, and we can’t really change that. Figuring out how to adapt has been a difficult thing.”
Grant struggles with severe development delays. His parents took him in for genetic testing after he was not hitting milestones that many kids his age were.
While his family is hopeful, there is a strong chance that Grant may never be able to live independently. His only chance of doing so is extensive physical therapy. Many individuals with the syndrome also have to eat out of a feeding tube.
Very little of what Grant will need to survive is covered by insurance.
“We just want what’s best for him,” Burkhart said. “We want to be able to provide the therapies that we can for him to get the most success that he can have for life.”

Gurel had quite an audience on many occasions. Temple football plays at Lincoln Financial Field, home to the Philadelphia Eagles. Along with doing some of the Owls’ basketball games, she also performed with the Diamond Band in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2025 in New York City.

“It was super exciting,” she said. “It was the beginning of my junior year, (and) we found out they’d been sending in applications and a bunch of stuff behind the scenes. ... For so many people, that was their dream. People were crying when they told us.”
Being a feature twirler is a daunting task. Gurel was accompanied by an upperclassman twirler in her first two years at Temple but
was on her own to practice and come up with her own routines in her final two years.
“That was definitely difficult, but there’s also opportunities to be creative and highlight what you’re good at,” she said. “I knew what I was good at, and I was able to highlight that in routines and shy away from what I wasn’t so strong in.”

“We love the fact that everybody got really into it,” Brade said. “I have friends in both other communities, so I would nudge them and text them on. Then they would post on Facebook, like, ‘Come on, don’t let them win.’”
New for this year’s drive, a traveling trophy has been created, featuring an individual standing on top of two cans. The trophy is living in Parkesburg Borough Hall until either Atglen or Christiana eventually wins the crown.
“My husband and I crafted this lovely tacky gold trophy made out of cans,” Brade said. “And then we have an action figure hero with their hands up.”

Every week, items will be taken to the cupboard and weighed in. Food was also collected at various community events, such as Parkesburg 250 and Atglen’s 150th anniversary event.
The most needed items at the OAFC are pasta sauce; box pasta; canned fruit; noodle and rice sides; ketchup; mustard; mayo; canned beets; canned vegetables; canned soups; peanut butter; jelly; and baby items like diapers, wipes and baby food.
The drive started last year as Brade’s brainchild. After garnering support from Parkesburg Borough, she went to parks and recreation meetings in both Atglen and Christiana to convince borough leadership to support the drive.
Last year’s drive brought a total of 5,654 pounds of food to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC).
Both Brade and Grossman said that doing the drive over the summertime was a very intentional choice. With kids out of school for the summer and no longer receiving one or two free meals per day, local food pantries are forced to carry the brunt of the load.
“There’s just a big need for food over the summertime,” Grossman said. “A lot of people do drives at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, but there’s not a lot that happens throughout the summer.”

UDS Holds Fundraising Gala

United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS) recently held a gala with the theme “Beyond 60: Your Impact. Our Journey.” The sold-out event brought together 500 guests for a night dedicated to service, community connection, and philanthropy. The event was defined by teamwork and storytelling.
When the scheduled keynote speaker, John Kruk, was unable to attend due to illness, Teresa Rineer and the UDS Gala Committee pivoted to keep the event on track. Stepping in for their friend and teammate, Mickey Morandini and Tommy Greene - members of the 1993 Phillies National League Champi -
onship team - joined Dave Spadaro for a fireside chat and a VIP meet-and-greet with supporters. The program also included on-stage conversations with those directly impacted by UDS. Attendees heard from Brendan Fry and his sister Julianna, representing the Challenger Football and Cheerleading Program, as well as Griffin Swan, who was joined by

The gala raised nearly $540,000 via sponsorships, ticket sales, and an auction, all of which will fund UDS’ mission to deliver support and personal care to people with disabilities and older adults.

Lampeter-Strasburg, have gone on to twirl at schools like University of North Carolina - Charlotte and Penn State, respectively.
“Wendy seriously is just a sweetheart,” Gurel said. “It was so special; she’s amazing. I feel like they’ve really set me up to achieve all of my dreams.”
Dog Rescue Posts Open House

“A couple of our friends wanted to do something for us while I was going through cancer, to help pay for treatment,” Burkhart said. “We didn’t want to do that. Asking for help is hard, but once we figured out Grant’s diagnosis, we

Despite his struggles, Grant was described by his family as being the biggest bundle of joy, smiling from ear to ear with his big blue eyes wide.
“Grant is the happiest little boy,” his mom said. “He has every right to be frustrated or upset, and he’s not. ... He finds so much enjoyment in so much stuff and loves being around people.”
Even before the benefit, the outreach from the local community and support for the benefit has shocked the family.
“We knew that a lot of people cared about Grant, and planning this benefit has really shown that love and support we felt from friends, family and the community already,” Burkhart said.
Light & Legacy, a nonprofit based in Chester County, will host its inaugural Picnic With a Purpose on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Christiana Lions Club pavilion, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana. The family-friendly event is free and open to the community, and its purpose is to raise awareness and support for Light & Legacy’s mission in San Antonio de Fao, Dominican Republic. The event will include a cookout and the option to purchase refreshments from a water ice truck from 3:30 to 5 p.m. It will also feature lawn games and music. Giveaway drawings will take place at 6 p.m.,
Drought Warning Continues
Abnormally dry conditions, despite recent rainfall, have led to a continued drought warning in Chester County. Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) issued a drought warning due to the lack of significant rainfall in the county since 2025.
Under the PADEP’s drought warning guidance, residents, businesses, farmers, and other water consumers are asked to voluntarily reduce their daily water usage by 10% to 15%, or roughly six to nine gallons per person. For reference, the average showerhead uses about two gallons of water per minute, while washing dishes by hand can use up to 27 gallons, depending on water-use habits.

County Reaches Homelessness Reduction Milestone
Chester County has reached a functional zero milestone for chronic homelessness, the Chester County Department of Community Development announced at its recent State of Housing Affordability and Homelessness in Chester County event. Chronic homelessness refers to long-lasting or
recurring homelessness that affects a community’s most vulnerable residents.
Achieving the functional zero milestone is the result of a countywide, coordinated, data-driven entry system that has reduced chronic homelessness to a rare, manageable level. Along with the Department of Community Devel-
opment and the Chester County Partnership to End Homelessness, collaborators included nonprofit organizations, borough governments, legal aid providers, housing developers, and domestic violence advocates.
In the past five years, 52% fewer people entered emergency shelters. The 2026
Point-in-Time Count, conducted on Jan. 28 and into the early morning of Jan. 29, found a 30% decrease in homelessness compared to the previous year.

DiCaprio Named Director of Voter Services
Chester County has appointed Michele DiCaprio as the new director of the Department of Voter Services. She succeeds Karen Barsoum, who left the position in June. DiCaprio will start her new role on Monday, July 20. DiCaprio comes to Ches -
ter County government from foreign service. She most recently served as a senior U.S. diplomat in Mozambique, where she was tasked with advancing governance, human rights, and democratization. She oversaw $70 million in federal assistance.

Despite intermittent spring rainfall and considerable snowfall last winter, Chester County experienced diminished groundwater recharge from November through March, a period when trees and other vegetation typically reduce their water uptake. Instead of recharging during that time, groundwater levels - which help sustain streamflow - continued to decline, leaving streams well below normal levels throughout Chester County.
Anyone who relies on groundwater wells should monitor their water use and avoid overburdening their wells. Excessive pumping can lead to burned-out pumps or dry wells that cannot replenish quickly enough to meet demand.
Residents and businesses that rely on private wells and on-site septic systems should also remain mindful of water use. While much of the water used indoors eventually returns to the ground through septic drainfields, groundwater recharge can be slow and uneven, particularly during dry conditions.
PADEP’s drought warning, the second of the state’s three drought classifications, is based on the availability of public water supply and data on precipitation, surface water flow, groundwater levels, and soil moisture. The last time Chester County was under a drought warning was from November 2001 to February 2002.
