Breakfast, Farmers Market, Concert Planned in Christiana

Christiana is the place to be on Saturday, July 19, as Christiana Parks and Recreation will host the second program in its series of summer activities.

The day will feature breakfast, a

farmers market and a live music concert.

The day will begin with a pancake breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Lodge (Christiana Masonic Lodge 35), 115 E. Slokom Ave.

The breakfast menu will include pancakes, sausage, eggs, coffee and

other beverages. There will be separate fees for adults and for children age 5 and under. Tickets can be purchased at www.christiana parksandrec.com or at the door.

Across the street from the breakfast at 17 Green St., there will be a farmers market from 9 a.m. to

noon. Vendors will offer a variety of items, including fresh-cut flowers, locally-grown produce, crocheted blankets and animals, sweet treats, sourdough baked goods, handpoured beeswax candles, jewelry, tin art and other crafts.

Although Parkesburg took the top spot in the Battle of the Boroughs Food Drive, the real winner was the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC), which received a total of 5,654 pounds of food throughout the drive, which ran from May 19 through June 23.

As part of the first-time initiative, three local boroughs - Parkesburg, Atglen and Christiana - came together in a friendly competition to collect food for the OAFC.

The Marquis de Lafayette was a 19-year-old Frenchman who volunteered to join the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War in 1777. He was able to secure France’s assistance in the war effort, which has been credited in

In 1824, President James Monroe invited Lafayette to return to America, a trip that became known as Lafayette’s “Farewell Tour.” Planning to stay just three months, Lafayette extended his visit to 13 months because of the number of people who wanted to honor the Revolutionary War hero. During 1824 and 1825, Lafayette traveled more than 6,000 miles to all 24 states in the country, including Pennsylvania.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of that visit, American Friends of Lafayette established a

nationwide committee consisting of more than 500 individuals representing those 24 states that Lafayette visited. Events are being planned by communities to trace Lafayette’s footsteps on the exact dates and in the exact order he followed on his Farewell Tour of America.

Locally, a re-creation of his visit to Lancaster and Chester counties will take place on Sunday, July 27, through Tuesday, July 29. The event has been in the planning stages for the past four years. “Basically, I started by researching exactly what Lafayette did when he came to this area. We took that as the framework and wanted to create historically accurate events based on what happened in 1825,” explained Kathleen Hood, Lancaster Lafayette200 Bicentennial coordinator. “I have been working with a phenomenal planning committee. It’s exciting that it is all coming to fruition.” She added that she hopes the events will make Lancaster and Chester counties proud.

include the following: a Lafayette Tea at historic White Chimneys, which will include period music and a display by the Salisbury Township Historical Society; a free ceremony and Troop Muster at Lafayette Fire Company and Lafayette Tower Park; a stop at Franklin & Marshall College; and a Bicentennial Candlelight Dinner and Period Ball at the historic Trust46 building. Tickets will be required for the dinner.

On July 28, Lafayette Day at Historic Rock Ford will take place, featuring a Lafayette exhibit, Revolutionary War encampment, crafts, speakers, music, food and dancing.

The Lafayette200 Closing Ceremony and Grand Sendoff at Historic Drumore Estate will conclude the events on July 29. A fee will be charged for the event, which will include a French-inspired brunch.

An Evening with Lafayette Musical Performance will take place at the Ware Center on July 28. The free event will feature performances by Allegro Orchestra; Gospel Choir; MFE Community Chorus; Central York Fife & Drum Corps; and James Wolpert of Lancaster, who appeared on the TV show “The Voice.”

Other featured activities during the three-day celebration will include a Lafayette200 Lafayette in Lancaster exhibit, Lafayette200 Walking History Tours, Lafayette Day at the Lancaster Stormers, Marquis Monday author webinars, Lafayette educational resources, a preview reception at the Sehner-Ellicott von Hess Building and the release of a special edition commemorative book titled “Marquis de Lafayette Visits Lancaster.” For more information, including specific locations and start times, and to register for events, visit www.lafayette200pa.org. During the celebration, Ben Goldman, who hails from Washington, D.C., will portray Lafayette. Events will begin on July 27 with Breakfast with Lafayette at the Historic Stottsville Inn. A fee will be charged for the event, which will include breakfast, period music, historic re-enactors and a ceremony.

Other events on July 27 will include a parade through Parkesburg (formerly known as Fountain Inn). Lafayette will travel by horse and carriage through the town, and he will also offer a short speech. Other events on July 27 will

Help Wanted … Will Train

“We always need volunteers for both firefighters and EMS (emergency medical services),” said Dave Johnson, deputy chief with the Pequea Valley Fire Department (PVFD).

To make it easier for area residents to become certified emergency medical technicians (EMTs), PVFD is working to become accredited to hold training at the station, 3204 Vigilant St., Gordonville. Johnson explained that PVFD will be accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Emergency Health Services Federation. “We will be able to offer in-house training (run by our staff), and we expect to have that finalized by August,” said Johnson.

PVFD firefighter training is done at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center. “That’s roughly 130 hours for fire essentials,” said Johnson, who added that internal training is held monthly at PVFD.

According to Johnson, training sessions for EMTs will begin in September or October and run for five months with classes meeting two nights a week. “Basic training for an EMT is about 175 hours for Pennsylvania state certification,” explained Johnson. At the end of the class, students who pass a test will become state-certified EMTs. Some go on to become career EMTs. Johnson noted that while there is a charge for the class, students who go on to make a commitment to run with PVFD and complete the orientation process will be reimbursed. “Most (EMTs) trained in the in-house program are from the area, and most stay (to volunteer),” noted Johnson, who explained that PVFD previously ran a training program in partnership with another agency.

PVFD was created on Sept. 11, 2023, by the merger of Kinzer Fire Company, 3521 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers, and Gordonville Fire and EMS Company. “We cover southwest Leacock Township, eastern Paradise Township, and

a sliver of Salisbury Township,” stated Johnson. Mondays through Fridays during the day, PVFD staffs two ambulances with four personnel - two career EMTs and two volunteers. Johnson and the administrative assistant are at the station then as well. On nights and weekends, volunteers staff the ambulances. “We do weekly staffing rotation,” explained Johnson, who added that a volunteer may choose to run the same day each week. “We encourage but do not require that,” he said. Weekends, which run from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday, are

staffed by crews that work on a six-week rotation. “The crew is responsible to fill that 36-hour block,” explained Johnson, who noted that crew members may each put in 12 hours.

The PVFD EMS squad is busy.

Parkesburg

Parkesburg collected 2,141 pounds in total, and Atglen came in second place, collecting 1,859 pounds. Christiana finished third with 1,654 pounds.

Battle coordinators were April Brade of the Parkesburg Parks & Recreation Committee, Bekkah Bitterman of the Christiana Parks & Recreation Commission and Jennifer Grossman, chairperson of the Atglen Parks & Recreation Commission.

Brade said that all who involved were pleased at the outcome of the effort. “We were not sure how this would work. It was one big grand experiment,” she stated. “You have three municipalities, and each runs a little bit differently, but collectively we came together, and we are pleased with that.”

During the food drive, collection locations were established in the boroughs, including at local libraries, businesses and municipal buildings, where residents were invited to drop off unopened, nonperishable, unexpired food items. Each week, the donations were taken by volunteers

from the three organizations to the cupboard for a weigh-in.

“Each borough was responsible for taking their own food in and reporting back. It was an honor system,” said Brade. “The three of us - Jen, Bekkah and myself - we kept in contact. We agreed that every Tuesday or Wednesday everyone would drop off their donations for the week and report back.”

Some groups and residents took their food donations directly to the food bank. “(The OAFC) agreed to indulge us and weigh the food, and in fact, some groups dropped it off themselves,” Brade explained. “They were instructed to say, for example, ‘This is for Parkesburg,’and they would send me a screenshot of the weight ticket. We got credit for everyone’s donation that didn’t come through us but wanted to be included.”

Atglen collected food during special events, including Popsicles in the Park on June 20, during which free water ice was given out at Borough Hall Park, and during its Memorial Day program on May 24.

Fundraising Motorcycle Ride To Honor Fallen Marine

The 20th annual Cpl. Brandon M. Hardy Memorial Scholarship Ride will be held on Saturday, July 19. The motorcycle ride will start at Gap Community Church, 835 Houston Run Drive, Gap. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 8:45 a.m. Doughnuts will be provided. The ride will depart promptly at 9 a.m.

The ride will travel through portions of Lancaster and Chester counties and return to Gap Community Church for a barbecue chicken lunch at noon. There will be a fee

per person payable at registration. Non-riders may also attend the luncheon for a donation.

Proceeds of the ride will benefit the Cpl. Brandon M. Hardy Memorial Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to graduating seniors who are entering the military. Brandon was a resident of Cochranville and was killed in action in Al Anbar, Iraq, on April 28, 2006. To date, $167,000 in scholarship funds have been given in his memory. For more information, call Jill Hardy at 610-416-3057 or Chad

On his official Facebook page, Atglen Mayor Darren Hodorovich said that he is “Atglen proud” following the food drive. “While this was a competition between the boroughs, the end result is an incredible amount of food collected for our neighbors in need,” he stated. “Parks and Rec committees from all three boroughs worked together to create this event. However, the buy-in from the communities has been phenomenal.”

At one point, Atglen was very close in taking the lead. On June 18, Christiana was in first place with 1,379 pounds of food, while Atglen was in second place by only nine pounds with 1,370 pounds of food collected. Parkesburg was in third place with 1,270 pounds at that point. “We were calling Atglen small but mighty,” said Brade, noting that Atglen is smaller in population than Parkesburg.

Brade said the final push that took Parkesburg over the top was a collection of food by the Parkesburg pickleball group during the last week of the drive. The group, which meets at Minch Park, is led by Amy Wilde, who is also a member of the Parkesburg Parks & Recreation Committee.

and Doris Miller at 717-314-9554. More information is also available on the “Cpl. Brandon M. Hardy Memorial Scholarship Motorcycle Ride” event page on Facebook.

“Amy got the pickleball club to do one final massive drop-off (of food) on the hottest day of the summer so far,” noted Brade.

Organizers plan to make the Battle of the Boroughs an annual event to coincide with the end of the school year. “It was so well received, and it came together so well we definitely want to do it again next year. We’ll do it before school lets out and kids aren’t getting free lunches,” said Brade. “We got so much positive feedback from the general public and from the businesses that were assisting. Personally, I received positive feedback from (Parkesburg) Mayor (John Hagan) and borough council.”

Brade noted that a trophy is being created for the winner. “The intention is for it to be like the Stanley Cup, and it will go to the winner every year,” she said adding, “(Battle of the Boroughs) was a lot of fun for a really good cause. We had no idea that it would be this well received and well done with this amount of food.”

PVFD

from pg 3

Located close to Route 30 and not far from Route 340, it would be expected that the majority of calls might be vehicle accidents, but Johnson said that is not the case. Retrieving the 2024 incident report, he notes that of nearly 1,800 calls, more than 300 were for illness, followed by a number of falls and finally traffic accidents. “That’s a very high call volume for this area,” stated Johnson. He added that 2024 was PVFD’s busiest year - Gordonville existed for more than 100 years prior to the merger. “Over the last eight years, (during) seven of them (call volume) was consistently rising,” he reported. Currently, PVFD is looking forward to employing a new ambulance in 2026. Johnson explained that the vehicle will cost just under $400,000. “We are raising money for that,” said Johnson, who stated that breakfast buffet fundraisers at the Kinzer station will be held on Saturdays, Sept. 6, and Nov. 1, from 6 to 10 a.m. The fall mud sale will be held at the

Gordonville station on Saturday, Sept. 20, beginning at 8 a.m. Johnson began volunteering with White Horse Fire Company when he was 17. He noted that both his father and uncle had been volunteers in the Horsham area. “Most people join here at (age) 14,” he said. “I was a little late.” Johnson completed his EMT training with Gordonville and then lived at the Manheim Township Ambulance Association location, where he served for seven years while working for the Harrisburg International Airport Fire Department. In 2018, Johnson returned to the PV area and began volunteering with Gordonville again. By 2019, he was working there part time, and in 2021, he became full time with the department.

Christiana

is hosting the farmers market on the third Saturday of each month this summer. The first market was held on June 21. “We had 17 vendors (for the first-time event),” noted parks and recreation member Terry Buchanan. “We will have a lot of the same vendors coming back, plus ones that are new.”

Vendors can complete an application and reserve a spot for a fee at www.christianaparksandrec .com/vendors. Setup for the market will begin at 7 a.m. No home-based businesses or mass-produced items will be permitted.

“We prefer items be homemade. We call it a ‘growers, makers and bakers’ market,” Buchanan pointed out. “We are open to (all types of vendors). A good variety of things is interesting for people to walk around and see.”

Later that day, a free concert will be presented at the same location at 6 p.m. The performers will be Public Dime, who will entertain attendees with classic rock, music from the ’80s and ’90s and some modern rock. Among the music featured will be

songs by artists ranging from Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and Duran Duran to Roxette, Eve 6 and Tracy Chapman. “The concert is free; you just need to bring a chair or blanket and come enjoy the music,” Buchanan added. Parks and recreation will sell walking tacos and hot dogs as a fundraiser during the concert. All activities will be held rain or shine. To learn more, visit the previously mentioned website or www .facebook.com/christianaparks andrec or follow the group on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Those with questions may email enjoylife @christianaparksandrec.com. The next farmers market is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16. The A440s will perform the same night at 6 p.m.

Christiana Parks and Recreation is a relatively new group that formed in January. The group’s goals are to offer fun and family-friendly activities and promote the community. Its website lists details about local events and invites visitors to sign up for a newsletter to keep informed about local activities.
