Adults Connect Through Crafts at Parkesburg UMC

“All are welcome, and our main goal is adult fellowship. The classes and supplies are free,” said Jennifer Earl when describing the Christian Crafters, a free craft class for adults that is offered by United Methodists in Action (UMIA) at Parkesburg United Methodist Church (UMC). “We laugh a lot, and no art talent is required.”

Earl, UMIA president, leads the group, which meets monthly on select Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church, 411 Main St., Parkesburg. The group will not meet in July; the next scheduled gathering will be on Aug. 4.

or another church to participate.

The group, which is new, formed about a year and a half ago. It is open to adults, and it is not necessary to attend Parkesburg UMC

“We ask that it be adults because we (sometimes) work with glass and metal,” explained Earl. “You don’t even have to go to a church. It’s more about fellowship.”

Each meeting begins with a short prayer or reading. Earl then provides instructions for the craft activity of the night. Refreshments are provided.

Community Invited To Discover Chester County Farmers Markets

“It will be fun … like a treasure hunt,” said Melissa Harrop, AgConnect communications coordinator, when describing the Chester County Farmers Market Trail, which invites people to experience 10 different farmers markets across Chester County and collect a stamp at each one. Those who complete a Farmers Market Trail card will receive a special “Ag Swag Bag.”

“Sometimes vendors change, or what each vendor brings week to week may change depending on what their stock is,” Harrop added. “Going to a farmers market is a new experience every time you go. You never know what you are going to find.”

During the first-time event, being presented by AgConnect, local families are invited to take fun road trips to the various markets throughout the county.

Because it is being held on the weekend of the Independence Day holiday, July’s Saturday on the Porch event being presented by the Christiana Historical Society (CHS) on July 5 will have a patriotic theme. The monthly social activity will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana, which is the CHS headquarters. The Christiana Singers,

Participating markets are Artisan Exchange in West Chester, Berwyn Farmers Market, Downingtown Farmers Market, Eagleview Farmers Market in Exton, KSQ Farmers Market in Kennett Square, Malvern Farmers Market, New Garden Growers Market in Landenberg, Oxford Village Market, Phoenixville Farmers Market and West Chester Growers Market. Trail maps are available at all participating farmers markets, or the map can be downloaded at www.go-agconnect.org.

AgConnect also produces the Chester County Farm Guide, which highlights family-owned farms and markets throughout Chester County. “I had contact

comprising members of the LanChester Chorus, will perform patriotic music in four-part harmony from approximately 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

“They will sing hymns and patriotic songs that were written and sung in the era of the 1800s, (and they will share) stories of why the songs were written and (information about the composers),” said CHS member Patti Shrom.

CHS volunteers will sell beverages, including coffee and cold drinks, such as lemonade, tea, soda and water. A special red, white and blue dessert will also be served. “There will be a yogurt parfait available. It will have strawberries, blueberries and yogurt,”

noted Shrom. Also offered will be homemade oatmeal raisin cookies, fresh-baked muffins and doughnuts. In addition, special recognition will be offered to guests who are veterans. “We want to honor the veterans that day as well. They will get a U.S. flag, and we will have gift cards to a local pizza shop, while supplies last,” said Shrom, noting that a Veterans Identification Card will be required for the gift cards. There will also be a CHS mug available to purchase for a discount, which includes one free coffee refill. CHS began the Saturday on the Porch program in 2024. The event takes place on the first Saturday of each month, April through November.

if anyone wants to contribute, and (people may) bring a snack,” Earl noted.

The group has worked with a variety of mediums since it began meeting. “I try to introduce a new craft once a month, whether it is working with fabric or Mod Podge,” Earl said. “I have been doing arts and crafts my whole life.”

The meeting on June 23 featured a craft using recycled DVDs and CDs to create card holders.

“If you are playing cards, you can put your cards in the holder and you can hold it in your hand,” Earl explained. “We wanted to take it a step further, and we put magnets

on the back, and you could use it on your refrigerator (to hold) appointment cards or notes. You could also take a birthday card and place it in the holder on the refrigerator. It’s a special way to display a card.”

Deb Ann Scott, who attended the recent meeting, said she enjoyed meeting the other crafters and finding a new purpose for unused items. “(We had) lots of laughs, told stories and, of course, we (completed) crafts,” she stated.

“It’s amazing how crafters can use leftover yarn, fabric, buttons, glue and some basic stuff to create something beautiful.”

Earl noted that about 12 to 15

people attend the craft meeting regularly. “Each individual gets attention. I try to get everyone to learn something new,” she said. “(Even) if people say they have never done crafts, they will come out with a product. We do easy things. We have a lot of fun.”

Most of the projects involve the use of recycled materials. “A lot of our items are DIY (do-it-yourself). They use recycled items like fabric that was donated,” said Earl.

In order to showcase its work and raise money for the community, the Christian Crafters held a bazaar last Christmas. “We decided to do a bazaar at the church (to sell) Christmas ornaments,” Earl said. “We took the money from that, and it went back into the community.”

She noted that Parkesburg UMC supports Parkesburg Churches

Community Outreach (PCCO) and The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center, among other charities. It also operates the nonprofit Righteous Clothing Thrift Store.

In addition to the crafting group, UMIA plans to resume its monthly game night at the church

in August. “We want to encourage outside activity just to have fellowship. There are no strings attached,” said Earl. “We want the community to come together and get to know each other and have a good time.”

For more information about the Christian Crafters, search for

“Parkesburg ‘United Methodists in Action’” Facebook group. Those with questions may contact Earl at cjearl@verizon.net. Earl asks that those who plan to attend the August meeting contact her in advance so that enough craft supplies will be available.

During the meeting on June 23, the crafters, including Virginia Vignali (left) and Rosie Woodhouse, used recyled CDs to create card holders.

information from putting the guide together,” Harrop explained. “Once I sent out the email, (the farmers markets) were very receptive on doing the Farmers Market Trail. All 10 are in the farm guide, and I got everybody on board.”

Farmers markets in Chester County offer freshly grown, locally produced products, such as meats, eggs, fresh produce, honey, flowers, wines and ciders. “You have staples - vegetables and meats,” stated Harrop, “but then you have vendors that have artisan things like cheeses, jellies and jams. It’s fun to see what’s there.”

She added that some farmers market vendors accept the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) card as payment.

Market Trail yard sign at each farmers market to collect a stamp. “They will stamp on back of the card which farmers market you are at,” said Harrop. “Once all 10 stamps are collected, participants can submit a photo of their completed map through the website or leave their map at their final market stop. They will then be sent a free swag bag.”

People have through the end of December to complete their trail maps. “It’s important for people to realize when summer ends, farmers markets do not. Most of them have winter hours,” Harrop noted. “The northern end to the southern end (of the county) may seem like a daunting (drive), but there is a long time to complete (the map) and check out (all the farmers markets).”

Harrop said that next year a different map may be featured, such as

Shrom said the event has been well attended. “Some people come and go, and some people linger and talk for the whole morning. They are enjoying the porch; it is the perfect setting for relaxing,” she said.

Different musical entertainment is offered each month. Past performers have included piano player Dan Harvey, the Haggans Family and accordion player Phara Blank.

“Weather has been a challenge, except for May, when we had perfect weather, but we have had good attendance,” said Shrom. “(Attendees) enjoy it; they love getting out and talking. It’s a time to put the phones away and get out and talk to other people. We get people from all over.”

CHS uses the proceeds from the monthly events for the ongoing restoration of the 1867 Brinton House, which is associated with the Christiana Resistance of 1851. The Brinton family was also involved in the Underground Railroad, and the house was reportedly a stop on that network.

“As we peel back layers during this

restoration, we always find things,” said Shrom, whose brother, Jim Groff, is CHS vice president. “Jim always said that the house tells its own story as we work on it.”

While the house is not yet suitable for occupation, visitors to July’s Saturday on the Porch can get a sneak peek inside the house and view a display of photos about the progress of the projects. “We let people go into the one front room. You can step into the house a little bit,” Shrom said.

The goal is to have the building renovated and open by the end of 2025. Those who would like to donate to the building fund may visit www.christianahistoricalsociety.com/donate. “You can donate for supplies or donate specifically to the porch fund for maintenance,” Shrom noted.

For more information about the society, upcoming events and the restoration project, visit www .christianahistoricalsociety.com or search for “The Christiana Historical Society” on Facebook. Those with questions may email info@ christianahistoricalsociety.com.

one that highlights local farms. “We are hoping to have themed trails throughout the years,” she said. “We are starting with farmers markets and talking about next year’s trail that consumers can do to learn about Chester County’s agriculture. If we can get families in the commu-

nity to understand and learn more about agriculture and the local food system, all the better.”

For the location and opening hours of all farmers markets in Chester County, visit the aforementioned website. Those with questions may email mharrop@chesco.org.
