A Community Responds By Ann Mead Ash

A press release sent out in May by Kylie Stoltzfus, director of communications at The Factory Ministries, expressed wonder at the way area residents responded to the community needs that resulted from COVID-19 restrictions. “We had absolutely no idea what to expect as the … pandemic began to impact Lancaster County,” wrote Stoltzfus. The press release went on to note that the response from area residents was amazing. “The Factory Ministries has been

For youths who are not 4-H members, there will be a one-time fee, which includes 4-H membership. The online programs are being offered in lieu of in-person camps held throughout the county, including those at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. “At this time, everything will be virtual,” said Logan Hall, Extension educator.

Registration is currently underway for virtual summer day camps and self-guided activities being offered by the Penn State Extension 4-H Youth Development program. Topics will include computer science, babysitting, pets and plant science.

Parkesburg Cub Scout Pack 135 and Boy Scout Troop 135 are currently holding a gift card drive for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard since COVID-19 affected the food drive that the troop and pack were going to host at Dutch-Way Farm Market in April. The food bank is seeking gift cards from Walmart, Dutch-Way, Giant and Acme. Heather Bishop, committee member for both the pack and the troop, has established a post office box where gift cards may be mailed. To obtain the address, readers may email Bishop at bishop.hl@gmail.com. Gift card donations will be accepted until the end of July. See Gift Cards pg 5

Because the annual David’s Drive picnic and clothing collection, which was scheduled for May 17, was canceled due to COVID-19, the David’s Drive 831 (DD831) charity instead held an underwear drive on Flag Day, June 14, at East Fallowfield Park. Between noon and 3 p.m., volunteers accepted donations of new men’s and women’s underwear, as well as socks and T-shirts, which were donated to veterans in need at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The David’s Drive 831 charity held an underwear drive on Flag Day, June 14, at East Fallowfield Park, collecting approximately $10,000 worth of men’s and women’s underwear, socks and T-shirts for veterans in need. The charity also announced that St. Joseph’s Parish’s fourth annual golf outing on July 13 at Applecross Country Club, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 7208, will benefit David’s Drive.

blown away by the degree of generosity and creativity that has shown itself through this season,” Stoltzfus wrote. Adam Nagle, director of The Factory Ministries, knew it would take that kind of unity to weather the pandemic. “From the beginning we’ve been saying, ‘If we get through this, we’ll only get through it together,’” recalled Nagle. “We believe that one of the most powerful forces on the planet is human collaboration and cooperation. We are stronger together.” In an area where free and reducedcost lunches are provided to more than 50% of students, the number of families receiving free food from the The Factory increased by 200 in less than two weeks. Fortunately, the community generously stepped up to help fill the need. See The Factory pg 2
