The Chester County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently presented Outstanding Achievement in American History Awards to local middle school students. As part of the annual program, all private and public schools in the county are welcome to participate. “I send out a personalized invitation around April to each of our schools in Chester County explaining what the award is and inviting them to participate,” explained Kym Dyer, history award committee chair. “We sent 21 invitations and all of the schools participated; we had 100 percent participation.” Unlike the DAR’s annual American History Essay Contest, which asks students to complete essays that are judged by DAR members, the Outstanding Achievement in American History

Awards are given to students who are chosen by the staff members at local public and parochial schools. “The students recognized for this award are chosen by a committee of their school’s guidance counselors, eighth-grade counselors and American history teachers. This award is not taken lightly, and at least one school has an end-of-the-year exam to help determine the recipient,” said Dyer. “The teachers decide which eighthgrade student they feel is excited about American history and has excelled in American history.” The winners are announced at endof-year awards ceremonies held at the schools. Educators have the option of presenting the awards themselves or having a DAR member visit to present the award. This year, seven of the awards were presented by DAR members. See DAR Awards pg 7

A summer of reading fun for people of all ages kicked off at Atglen Public Library with a Star Wars party as part of the SummerQuest reading program on June 15. In keeping with the Star Wars theme for the day, costumed visitors from Garrison Carida of the 501st Legion appeared as Darth Vader, stormtroopers and other characters from the series. Photo ops with the characters, door prizes and refreshments were some of the highlights of the party, which also offered a chance to register for the program and borrow some great books. “Summer is our busiest time of the year,” library director Robbyn Kehoe said. “We have about 100 participants in summer reading programs.” Some readers embraced the Star Wars theme with a passion. Among them was

Debbie Cross of Atglen who dressed in costume along with her children. “We love the summer reading program. We go (to the library) all yearround,” Cross said. “The kids love the library, and this brings them in a little bit more for a little extra fun.” “We’re encouraging summer reading,” Kehoe said. “Read 30 minutes a day, check in with us and you get a ticket for one of the prizes. We are starting a new program this year called Patch Power.” The Patch Power portion of the summer reading program allows readers to complete activity cards to earn badges in different categories. Patches are the Epic Wizard, Mad Chef, Globetrotter, Caped Avenger, Board Gaming Genius and Interstellar Seeker. “We have six patches. If you do four activities for (each of) them you get a patch you can sew on your tote bag or backpack,” Kehoe said. See Summer Reading pg 9
