Octorara Class of 2025 Celebrates Graduation

Cherishing special moments from high school and beyond was the theme as student speakers addressed the Class of 2025 during commencement ceremonies held on June 6 on the front lawn of Octorara JuniorSenior High School. The event also featured musical performances and comments offered by school administrators.

Salutatorian Mya Trotty spoke about her passion for collecting coins throughout her life and placing them in glass containers. She compared that to cherishing small moments throughout high school.

“The value was never in the money; it was in the collecting,” she stated. “All of us have collected our own coins these last 12 years - not literal coins - but our own small personal moments. Today isn’t the end of our collection; it is just a change of jars - new cities, new schools, new lives - they all hold treasures.”

“Let’s practice the habit of noticing or picking up small unremarkable things,” she added. “When they pile up, they become the story of who we are. So if you ever notice a coin on the ground, pick it up. It may just remind you of this moment and, of course, save it for me.”

Like Mya, co-valedictorian Meghan McGinnis talked about special moments in high school, describing herself as person who collects stories. “When you learn to ride a bike or the moment you met your best friend and the first day of freshman year - they are all chapters in your book of life,” she said. “The next story (will be when you) walk across this stage. This page turn looks different for each of us, but unlike books, this is not where your book ends. (Your) story is part of the book you’re still writing.”

Also speaking at the event was co-valedictorian Sebastian Hess, who recalled starting his high school career at Octorara four years ago. “It’s hard to believe

that exactly 1,383 days ago we nervously climbed these same steps for the first time. We were wide-eyed freshmen clutching our schedules and wondering what the next four years would hold,” he said. “Tonight, we stand at the top of a new set of steps - the ones leading into our futures filled with pride, hope and memories we will carry with us forever.”

He expressed appreciation to teachers, parents, coaches, family members and fellow students for their support through high school. “When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to grow up, graduate from high school and leave Octorara behind. But now just minutes away (from graduating), I realized how much I’ll miss this place, this time and my people,” he shared. “I say this not out of sadness, but as a reminder to live

New Book Highlights Author’s Love of Dogs

In 2020, Community Courier readers were introduced to Jim Weagley, who shared a story about his faith in a book titled, “Bet on the Turtle (My Long, Slow Journey of Faith).” Now, five years later, Weagley has

penned a book that explores another passion in his life - dogs.

“I Love Dogs! A Tribute to Man’s Best Friend” was released this month by Weagley, a resident of Atglen. The book details both humorous and poignant moments that Weagley spent with his family dogs from his

July’s Saturday on the Porch

To Feature Patriotic Theme

Because it is being held on the weekend of the Independence Day holiday, July’s Saturday on the Porch event being presented by the Christiana Historical Society (CHS) on July 5 will have a patriotic theme.

The monthly social activity will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana, which is the CHS

headquarters. The Christiana Singers, comprising members of the LanChester Chorus, will perform patriotic music in four-part harmony from approximately 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

“They will sing hymns and patriotic songs that were written and sung in the era of the 1800s, (and they will share) stories of why the songs were written and (information about the composers),” said CHS member Patti Shrom.

childhood through adulthood.

The cover features Weagley and his late dog Pudgie. “I had a bond with him unlike any other dog I have had,” said Weagley. “We were good buddies.”

Weagley’s love of dogs started when he was a youngster growing up at the Seeing Eye Breeding Division in Mendham, N.J.

“I had the good fortune to grow up on the property of Seeing Eye, the organization that raises and trains guide dogs for the blind. My dad was the first director of their breeding division,” he explained. “From a very early age, I was introduced to the puppies. We would feed them and exercise them.”

“The book is also a way to honor my dad and mom,” he added. “It is dedicated to them.”

While writing the book, Weagley, via Facebook, requested that the public send in stories and photos about their favorite dogs for possible inclusion in the book.

from pg 1

“I got pictures from all over the country - hundreds of them,” he said. “Some of them are really emotional. There is one from a former elementary school classmate of mine. She had a son that was killed in action in the military. As a way to honor him, she got a dog, and she and her dog do therapy work. They go to schools and hospitals. Her son was a Marine Raider, and the dog’s name is Raider.”

The book also includes stories from veterinarians. “I have included stories from veterinarians that are interesting and comical stories - things they have encountered from dogs and dog owners,”Weagley noted.

He said that today’s dogs have been trained to provide a variety of services for people in need and in law enforcement. “It’s important to acknowledge the amazing abilities of dogs and the services they provide,” Weagley shared. “They are support animals. There are dogs that are trained to be with a diabetic to detect low blood sugar, bomb-sniffing dogs and dogs that (detect) seizures. It is incredible the services they provide.”

An additional and humorous aspect of the book is a commentary offered by a “cat.”

CHS volunteers will sell beverages, including coffee and cold drinks, such as lemonade, tea, soda and water. A special red, white and blue dessert will also be served. “There will be a yogurt parfait available. It will have strawberries, blueberries and yogurt,” noted Shrom. Also offered will be homemade oatmeal raisin cookies, fresh-baked muffins and doughnuts. In addition, special recognition will be offered to guests who are veterans. “We want to honor the veterans that day as well. They will get a U.S. flag, and we will have gift cards to a local pizza shop, while supplies last,” said Shrom, noting that

a Veterans Identification Card will be required for the gift cards.

There will also be a CHS mug available to purchase for a discount, which includes one free coffee refill.

CHS began the Saturday on the Porch program in 2024. The event takes place on the first Saturday of each month, April through November.

Shrom said the event has been well attended. “Some people come and go, and some people linger and talk for the whole morning. They are enjoying the porch; it is the perfect setting for relaxing,” she said.

Different musical entertainment is offered each month. Past performers have included piano player Dan Harvey, the Haggans Family and

accordion player Phara Blank.

“Weather has been a challenge, except for May, when we had perfect weather, but we have had good attendance,” said Shrom. “(Attendees) enjoy it; they love getting out and talking. It’s a time to put the phones away and get out and talk to other people. We get people from all over.”

CHS uses the proceeds from the monthly events for the ongoing restoration of the 1867 Brinton House, which is associated with the Christiana Resistance of 1851. The Brinton family was also involved in the Underground Railroad, and the house was reportedly a stop on that network.

“As we peel back layers during this restoration, we always find things,”

said Shrom, whose brother, Jim Groff, is CHS vice president. “Jim always said that the house tells its own story as we work on it.”

While the house is not yet suitable for occupation, visitors to July’s Saturday on the Porch can get a sneak peek inside the house and view a display of photos about the progress of the projects. “We let people go into the one front room. You can step into the house a little bit,” Shrom said.

The goal is to have the building renovated and open by the end of 2025. Those who would like to donate to the building fund may visit www .christianahistoricalsociety.com/ donate. “You can donate for supplies

New Book

“There is an appendix in the book where I have a cat commenting on each chapter,” Weagley said. “People can refer to the cat’s comments after each chapter.”

Weagley believes that dog lovers will enjoy his latest book. “I know people treasure their relationships with dogs. They will be able to relate to my stories,” he stated. “What is interesting is that any dog owner or

Weagley plans to hold author talks and book signings. For more information or to schedule an event, contact Weagley at faithNwellness@comcast.net. “I Love Dogs!” is currently available for sale on Amazon.

We made it. Thank you to all who walked beside us on the journey to this milestone.”

Jonathan Propper, principal, addressed the Class of 2025, providing advice to the students. “Here are some truths,” he told the students. “Don’t
