Octorara Graduates Caravan Through District By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
High school graduates in the Class of 2020 have faced a school year unlike anyone could have imagined. At Octorara Junior-Senior High School, the district has done its best to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating seniors. Instead of participating in traditional commencement ceremonies, seniors have made their walk to receive their diplomas alone at scheduled time slots with only invited family members viewing in person. There are still tentative plans to hold a celebration for the seniors on the football field on Friday, July 31, and even hold prom in August, but in the meantime, some parents felt the need to do more for their seniors. Rana Lunstra is one of the organizers of the Octorara Class of 2020 caravan, which took place on June 5. She has a daughter and a stepson graduating this

Virtual Fundraiser Benefits The Arc
Christiana Council President Recognized
By Francine Fulton
In previous years, The Arc of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that supports people with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families, held a walking and running event that took place at West Goshen Community Park in West Chester. During the fundraiser, adults and youths alike walked through bubble stations along a 1-mile course or ran a 5K through adjacent neighborhoods. This year, however, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Bubble Walk, Run and Fun event went virtual. After registering online, participants were invited to walk in their own neighborhood, in parks, along trails or to any destination of their choice on May 17.

Christiana Borough Council president Robin Coffroth was recognized for 35 years of service as a borough council member during the June 3 council meeting. The event was held in person at the borough office with social distancing requirements in place. A resolution was approved honoring him for his service to the community, and state Rep. John Lawrence was on hand to deliver a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. “Thirty-five years is a long time to do anything, particularly municipal government, and it needs to be recognized,” Lawrence said. “A good thing about Robin is he is very plain spoken. There is never any doubt about where he stands on things.” See Council President pg 5

year and was concerned that they would not have the normal experiences seniors remember. “(June 5) is the night the graduation would have taken place,” Lunstra said. “We’re giving our seniors acknowledgment on what would have been their traditional graduation day.” More than 60 vehicles took part in the caravan, with many of them decorated for the occasion. Seniors in their caps and gowns rode with family or drove on their own on a route led by an Althouse school bus. Senior Maura Shank enjoyed the caravan and the inclusion of the school bus. “It makes me feel good to know that we’re being recognized. This situation is nowhere near ideal, but I appreciate that they’re routing us all together and the Althouse is in front of us,” she said. “I’ve been going to Octorara since kindergarten, and it’s awesome that I have a little part of school with us right there.” See Octorara pg 2
