VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg, will offer a vacation Bible school (VBS) program themed “Roar: Life Is Wild, God Is Good.” The program will run from Sunday, June 23, to Thursday, June 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Activities will include Bible-learning activities, songs, games, snacks, Bible adventures, collecting Bible Memory Buddies, science gizmos, and God Sightings. Each day will conclude with a Safari Celebration. Family members and friends are invited to join for this special time nightly at 8:05 p.m. Children will join a mission effort to provide nutrition packets and health checkups for mothers and babies in Zambia. Storyteller Susannah Brody will present “On the Homefront: Stories of the American Revolution.” Brody is the author of several books on local history in Chester County. She presents storytelling in local schools as well as for community organizations and retirement communities. Admission is free.

Summer programs will begin on June 24 at The Parkesburg POINT youth center. At the site’s Hands-On Training Center, students age 12 and over will be able to learn basic home maintenance skills from volunteers, including Phil Hetzel (right).

Youths who live in Parkesburg and surrounding communities are invited to take part in summer programs that will begin on Monday, June 24, at The Parkesburg POINT youth center, 700 Main St., Parkesburg. Activities will be held from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays for students ages 8 to 18. Youths must be registered at The POINT to be a part of any of the summer programs. The Summer Enrichment program will run from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The program will include lunch, horseback riding sessions at a local farm and field trips, along with math and reading studies. In July, a Tuesday summer Bible study will be added. Space is limited for Summer Enrichment, and all youths must be registered to attend. The evening program will run from

4 to 6:30 p.m. and it will include a hot, cooked meal, along with athletics, gymnastics, e-games, board games and gaga ball. “The whole evening is structured. At 4 p.m., there will be gym time, an inspirational message and a time for games,” said Debbie Shupp, The POINT’s director of development. “We just started an e-gaming program where the kids will get to play games, but they play against themselves in here (and not against other players on the internet). The Downingtown/Thorndale Rotary is building a gaga pit, and they will be able to play gaga. Dinner will be from 6 to 6:30 p.m.” Shupp said that youths must attend the sessions from 12:30 to 4 p.m. or from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in their entirety. They are welcome to stay for both sessions. Fossils, Gems, Minerals, And More! True Swing, True Serve Camps Scheduled In the market for minerals or hoping to acquire some quartz? Then check out the fourth Fossil, Gem, and Mineral Show that the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club will host on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15, at the Hoffman Building on the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The event will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 14 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 15. Club president Christopher Haefner said that experts will offer gems, crystals, and fossils from around the world for perusal or purchase. All sorts of jewelry will be available as well. The Knit This - Purl That knitting group at the Parkesburg Library, 105 West St., Parkesburg, will meet on Thursday, June 13, and every Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Participants should bring their own yarn and needles. Those who have a project they are working on are welcome to bring it to the meeting. In addition to personal projects, the group is currently making lap robes for veterans, shawls for patients at a dialysis center and baby blankets. Call the library at 610-857-5165.

Children and adults are invited to visit the fourth Fossil, Gem, and Mineral Show hosted by the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club in Quarryville on June 14 and 15. Special geological presentations will be offered on June 15.

Doug Kauffman, director of children’s outreach ministries at Pequea Baptist Church, located at 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, is looking forward to holding the third True Swing Softball Camp for girls and the second True Serve Volleyball Camp for both boys and girls. “We are excited to continue these two programs,” said Doug. “We are happy to establish something in the community to help (students) improve their skills.” This year, True Swing Softball Camp for girls in grades one through eight will be held at the new softball facility at Pequea Valley High School (PVHS), 4033 E.
