Fundraiser To Benefit Children Dealing With Pain BY FRANCINE FULTON
emories on Main, 322 Main St., Parkesburg, will hold a fundraising event, featuring snacks, artisan displays and an opportunity to win gift baskets, on Saturday, June 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. Proceeds will help children in need take part in the Comfort Ability Workshop, a chronic pain management program that is offered virtually by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). The event is being planned by shop owners Jenn and Randy Litwin, whose daughter, Elaina, has chronic illnesses. “We feel very fortunate that we were able to put (Elaina) through the program. At

the same time, our hearts ache for the families who aren’t in a place to do so,” Jenn explained. “The program has a scholarship fund for children who cannot afford to pay for the group. This fundraiser is for them.” During the event, Spring House Spirits will host tastings and offer spirits for sale, and local baker Vanessa Thomas will provide cupcakes and other sweet treats. El Limon Parkesburg will also serve complimentary food items. Christine Mann Moore from Emma’s She Shed will bring succulents suitable for planting. Attendees may bring their own pots; containers will also be for sale. “She will bring succulents that she has

grown, and she will plant them for you and tell you how to take care of them,” said Jenn. A variety of gift baskets will be available to win. Among those donating items are Spring House Spirits, Dairy Queen, Rocco & Anna’s Ristorante Italiano, Spiritual Creations111, Homestead Studios, Sweet Serendipity Cupcake and Treats, Heather Ann’s Creations, Pine Creek Animal Hospital, The Haberdashery and Sly Tom’s. The Parkesburg Free Library will also donate a basket of books. Those unable to attend the event may donate to the CHOP scholarship program directly on the Facebook event page, which can be found by searching for “Memories on Main” on Facebook. Jenn explained that the chronic pain group meets in one-month intervals. Elaina is enrolled in the June program. “The idea is to help these (children) learn to manage their pain in healthy ways other than with medications and connect with other kiddos with similar struggles,” she said. “(The group) meets multiple times a week over Zoom with different doctors and therapists. Once a week the parents get to join in and see the progress and learn ways to better assist their child.” Jenn said that Elaina has experienced illness and pain management issues her whole life. “When she was little, we started a tradition. Before every surgery or hospital stay, we would dye our hair fun colors,” said Jenn, noting that purple was the most recent color of choice. “It has always been something that she looks forward to.” Jenn said that Elaina has benefited from the CHOP program. “She’s homeschooled and she can’t interact with other kids, so it’s an opportunity to meet others in similar situations,” Jenn shared. “She is always saying to me, ‘I just want to be normal and feel normal.’” For more information about the fundraiser or to donate, visit the previously mentioned Facebook page.

Activities for children and adults will be part of the Heritage Days festivities.
As with many festivities, Heritage Days, a two-day celebration held at the Intercourse Community Park, skipped 2020 and held a somewhat abbreviated event in 2021. For 2022, Heritage Days organizers are pulling out the stops by bringing back traditional activities and mixing them with new ones. “A lot of it’s similar, but

there are a few new things,” said organizer Mike Sensenig. “We get great sponsorship from the businesses, so almost everything can be free.” This year’s Heritage Days celebration will be held in the park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, on Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18. On June 17, activities will begin at 5 p.m., and on June 18, the Intercourse Fire Company pancake and sausage breakfast will kick off the day at 6:30 a.m. One first-time activity that Sensenig pointed out is free axe throwing, which will be held on June 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. and June 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “That’s a new thing that’s kind of cool,” said Sensenig, who also noted that the mechanical bull ride, which was new in 2021, will return on June 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Other events of note on June 17 include the spelling bee for children at 6:30 p.m. and the Intercourse Heritage Trivia Contest for cash and prizes at 7:30 p.m. “There will be some pretty good prizes for that, and it will be interesting to see what people know,” said Sensenig. The traditional Heritage display will be set up inside the pavilion. “This year, we added a board from a collection of old photos from students at the one-room s c h o o l h o u s e s ,” said Sensenig, who said the photos are dated from 1898 to the 1940s. “A lot of them have the names of the kids,
so you can look up a family m e m b e r b y n u m b e r ,” ex plained Sensenig, who noted that area residents may be interested in finding photos of grandparents or great-grandparents. “It’s p r e t t y c o o l ,” h e s a i d . According to Sensenig, the
photos were gathered for a one-room schoolhouse reunion held in the 1980s and provided for Heritage Days by Elmer Zimmerman. On June 18, activities will include the traditional volleyball tournament from See Heritage Days pg 5

Bridge of Hope recently announced that Lila Stoeckle was promoted to become the organization’s first chief development officer and Jonathan Matías was hired as the national development director. Bridge of Hope was founded in Lancaster and Chester counties and has grown to 26 locations in 13 states. The organization has been engaging churches in ending family homelessness for over 30 years. Stoeckle will lead the development team and will continue to build relationships with the community to further the mission of Bridge of Hope. Stoeckle has fundraising experience and previously held the position of national director of development. Matías holds a Master in Divinity and served as a pastor in Alexandria, Va., for 11 years. He also has a back-

During the months between graduating high school and beginning college or between getting a university degree and entering the workforce, graduates may want to explore the personal growth that comes from volunteerism. Volunteerism can fill gap years or add to résumés for recent graduates. Volunteering provides various benefits. Some of these rewards include networking with an entirely different group of people. Volunteering also can help a person realize greater happiness by doing selfless acts for others, while they also can help one to realize a new passion. Volunteering with an organization also may help with a student’s job search. There are many arenas where young people can focus their volunteer efforts. Some ideas for volunteer opportunities include animal shelters, public service sectors, English as a second language tutors, community government, religious groups, conservation groups, and tutoring in local classrooms. Animal shelters rely on volunteers to help with

made there will be sold at 4 p.m. Head teacher Anna Stoltzfus explained that the quilts are produced by having the female participants cross stitch items. “One of the mothers puts (the pieces) together, and we have it in a frame at the shop, and then mothers and friends come and quilt it,” said Stoltzfus of the process. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp, salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies and iced coffee. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out, and a drive-through food
pickup will be available. The centers offer a variety of activities for participants. Stoltzfus said the women are at Caring Hearts on Mondays and Wednesdays and that she has three helpers. On Tuesdays, male participants are at the center with a male teacher and aides. Stoltzfus opens the day with devotions, including hymns and a Bible study. Following devotions, the group members work on beaded items, including keychains and pacifier straps, as well as doll toys and items for baby gifts. Close to the middle of the day, they break for lunch, which each participant brings from home. After lunch, they work on more projects until it is time to go home. Those who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-768-8497, 717-3542380, or 717-768-7417. On the day of the sale, individuals with questions may call 717-455-3987.

FBLA raised over $25,517. The donation will be distributed among Feeding Pennsylvania’s nine member food banks, which serve all 67 counties across the commonwealth through their 3,000 partner agencies. In addition to the funds raised, PA FBLA chapters across the state led fundraising events, volunteered, shared on social media, and participated in Feeding
Pennsylvania’s annual advocacy campaign, “Hear the PA Crunch,” to help raise awareness of hunger in their communities. Contributions will continue to be accepted from chapters until Monday, June 20. Becoming An Organ Donor

Each year, the Pennsylvania Future Business Leaders of America (PA FBLA) selects a statewide nonprofit to assist through fundraising, community service, and education. For its 2021-22 state project, PA FBLA selected Feeding Pennsylvania, the statewide association of Feeding America food banks. Through the state project, named “Bank on tomorrow by feeding the need today,” PA
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently joined the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) and Pennsylvania organ donation organizations Donate Life PA, Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE), and Gift of Life Donor Program in spreading the message that driver’s license and identification card holders can easily register as an organ donor. Potential donors considering adding the organ donor designation to their driver’s license or identification card do not have to wait for their renewal notices to take action. Many Pennsylvanians have answered the call to become
organ donors, helping Pennsylvania organ donation organizations to near a major milestone this year. Almost 50% of current driver’s license and identification card holders are registered organ donors. To add the organ donor designation to an existing driver’s license or identification card, visit www.dmv.pa.gov and select the Become an Organ Donor In 30 Seconds icon in the middle of the page. Once the designation is added, individuals will receive a designation card that they must carry with them to affirm organ donor status until they renew or replace their driver’s license or identification card. There is no charge for adding the designation to a driver’s license or
identification card. Driver’s license and identification card holders, as well as registered vehicle owners, can also support organ donation programs by donating to the Robert P. Casey Memorial Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Trust Fund at the time of application or renewal. Proceeds from the fund are used to educate and promote awareness of the organ donor program through nonprofit organizations like CORE and the Gift of Life Donor Program. For more information on organ and tissue donation in Pennsylvania or to sign up to become an organ donor, visit www.donate lifepa.org, www.core.org, or www.donors1.org.
Volunteering from pg 3 for volunteers. AmeriCorps focuses on domestic issues, while the Peace Corps is a branch of the U.S. government that engages volunteers in international service work. Community involvement, health care, agriculture, homelessness, and combatting hunger are top priorities for these organizations. Volunteers can spend time abroad teaching English as a second language to students. Others may want to volunteer domestically by helping non-English-speak-
ing individuals improve their language skills. Community government offers many options. A person may choose to sit on the board of a school or a neighborhood housing association or even explore volunteerism with a township municipal office. This will provide valuable hands-on experience and may help one lend a voice to issues that affect his or her living situation. Religious groups may have volunteer opportunities focused on community
outreach or programs affiliated with local nonprofits. Conservation groups offer volunteers opportunities to work on conservation projects across the country. From wildlife management to trail restoration to invasive species eradication, there are a wide variety of conservation-based volunteering opportunities. Graduates can volunteer to tutor students in local schools or overseas. Opportunities to tutor may be available in a variety of topics.

like musical lessons or science-based programs. Camps run by local parks and recreational departments do not typically last all summer, which parents should keep in mind when enrolling youngsters. Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. W hen suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Parents can point out that kids will not have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Weekly visits to the library, where children can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading. Play dates are a great way to make children happy and take some items off parents’ daily to-do lists. Parents can arrange routine summer play dates with children’s school friends, neighbors, or cousins. Parents can alternate hosting responsibilities, so they can get work done at home and enjoy a break when it is not their turn to host.

ATGLEN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH: E. Main and Dallas Sts., Atglen, PA. Joe Newsome, Interim Pastor. Join us Sundays at 11am as we preach Christ crucified, risen and coming again so all may come to a personal, saving relationship with Christ.
Children look forward to summer vacation every year. The last day of school gives way to less structured days when kids can spend more time outdoors and less time studying. Summer vacation can be a dilemma for parents, especially in households where both parents work full time. A pandemic-related increase in remote working has made that problem somewhat more manageable, but even parents working from home must find fun ways for children to stay occupied until the new school year begins. No two kids are the same, so parents may need to try various activities until they find something their children enjoy doing during the lazy days of summer. Day camps provide much of the structure of school without all the homework. Many parks and recreation departments run summer day camps for kids. Camps can be generalized or specialized. For example, some may offer an array of activities in a given day, including sports and nature walks, while others may focus on a single activity,

12 - COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition - June 8, 2022
townlively.com
Kids from pg 9 Perhaps in recognition of the need for affordable, family-friendly activities, many communities now host free events for children and their parents each week. Weekly movie nights under the stars and concerts in community squares are offered in many communities, but those same towns also may host events specifically for children during the daytime. A simple internet search of “free events near me” may unveil a host of activities that can keep kids occupied on summer days when their schedules are open.
