Cruisin’ in Christiana

Car Show To Benefit Fire Company

Cruisin’ in Christiana, a car show that will feature vehicles of all makes and models, will be presented by the Christiana Fire Company on Saturday, June 14, on the grounds of the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the show will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year marks the third annual Cruisin’ in Christiana. The first event was held in the fall of 2023, but organizers decided to change the car show to spring to take advantage of more favorable weather conditions.

“Last year, we had almost 90 cars,” said fire company member and event organizer Shawnie Betts. “We had cars, trucks and motorcycles.”

She noted that there were also some unique vehicles featured. “There was a souped-up Amish buggy, a dragster and a train car, and we had some tractors as well,”

said Betts. “The fire company had their engine there until they got a call.”

Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 65 entrants. There will also be trophies in various categories, including Best Classic, Modern, Motorcycle and Exotic.

“One of the volunteer fire company members is making the trophies,” noted Betts. “The Best in Show will be in honor of my (late) dad, Terry Walker.”

Music will be provided by The 45 Guy, who will spin vinyl records. Christiana Fire Company members will offer food for sale, including hot dogs, sausage sandwiches and hot pork sandwiches. Ice cream will be sold by Softie Whirl.

There will also be an opportunity for visitors to win prizes through a random drawing.

Prizes will include two North Face tents, including a four-man tent and a two-man tent; four tickets to a Lancaster Stormers baseball game; and gift cards from local restaurants. The prize

drawing will be held at 1:30 p.m.

A donation fee will be collected from vehicle owners. Spectators will be admitted free of charge.

Vehicle owners who register in advance by Friday, June 13, will receive a discount. Registration forms are available at the Christiana Borough office, 10 W. Slokom Ave. A link to register is also available at www.facebook.com/ christianafirecompany in a post dated May 25. Same-day registrations will also be accepted.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the all-volunteer Christiana Fire Company, located at 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana. The fire company serves the communities of Christiana Borough, Atglen Borough and Sadsbury Township. It also provides support to neighboring companies.

More information about the fire company, including volunteer opportunities, is available at the previously mentioned Facebook page and www.christianafire.com.

In the event of rain, the car show will be held on Saturday, June 21.

stopped at on the dates that correspond to Lafayette’s journey.

Brett Snyder, vice president of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township (HSST), reported that when the real Lafayette arrived at the Mount Vernon Inn, which once stood at the top of Gap Hill near the Chester County and Lancaster County line, 1,000 people were waiting to see him. “He was like a rock star,” stated Snyder.

To celebrate the arrival of the re-enactor, HSST commissioned a painting, which has now been completed by artist Christopher Lanser of Narvon. The framed painting will be available for viewing at the annual Living History Day and Lafayette Day on Saturday, July 26, at White Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap, beginning at 10 a.m. The day will feature Civil War re-enactments, house tours, open-hearth cooking, food trucks, and more. More information about the event may be found by searching for “White Chimneys” on Facebook and clicking on the

“Living History Celebration” tab. A High Tea for General Lafayette will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, at White Chimneys. The painting will be auctioned off directly following the High Tea. Funds raised from the sale of the painting will benefit HSST. More information may be found at https://lafayette200.org.

Lafayette was not yet 20 when he came to America from France in 1777 with some military training and a passion for equality. The teenager offered his services and resources to the Americans, becoming a major general at the tender age of 19. Lafayette eventually convinced the French government to join in the war effort by sending the French Navy to America’s aid. After the war, he returned to France, where he became involved in the French Revolution. At the age of 66, he returned to the United States and spent 13 months traveling 6,000 miles and visiting each of the 24 states in existence at the time.

HSST president Leona Baker felt it was necessary to have a painting to commemorate the event, and she remembered Lanser, who had given a presentation to HSST that included some of his paintings. “We had knowledge of the fact that when Lafayette came back in 1825, he stopped near the Mount Vernon Inn before he came to White Chimneys and moved on to Lancaster,” reported Baker, who worked with Lanser to develop the idea for the painting. Baker pointed out that in the completed piece, the Mount Vernon Inn is in the background on the hill.

In the foreground, Lafayette is reviewing his former regiment. Route 30 - then known as the Lincoln Highway - runs through the right side of the painting.

Lanser pointed out some of the details in the painting that he added, including a Conestoga wagon. “It’s so Lancaster County,” he noted. There is also a carriage similar to what Lafayette would have traveled in that was suggested by Baker.

Lanser painted a replica of the French flag at the time of the event hanging on the Mount Vernon Inn. He also included the American flag, the Pennsylvania state flag, and the flag of the regiment from southern Lancaster County that stands before Lafayette for review. Lanser made sure to feature a few older soldiers - one with a wooden leg - and a few African American gentlemen. He pointed out that African Americans were among the soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War. He also added a bald eagle in the sky. A young boy in uniform stands in front of the regiment and salutes Lafayette.

“I added the little fellow for a bit of whimsey,” stated Lanser, who first took up the art of painting in 2006. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had,” he noted. Lanser is now retired after teaching history at Conestoga Christian School for a number of years. “I love history,” he added.

A nationwide organization called Friends of Lafayette is organizing and publicizing events. More information, including videos; a schedule of events; tickets; and educational resources for libraries, schools, and homeschoolers, may be found at https:// lafayette200pa.org.

HSST has been in existence for 25 years. The organization meets each year from September through May at the Salisbury Township Building, 5581 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, on the third Thursday at 7 p.m. The next HSST meeting, which will be open to the public, will be a potluck picnic on Thursday, June 19, at 6 p.m. in the Salisbury Township Park in Gap. Readers who would like more information about HSST may call 717-442-4071.

Coast Guard Urges People To Practice Boating Safety

In connection with National Safe Boating Week - which was May 17 to 23 - the Coast Guard urges all Americans to familiarize themselves with best practices for a safe boating experience.

Everyone in the boat should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket appropriate for the water activity. People should file a float plan with someone they trust; the plan should detail where boaters

are going and when they expect to return.

Those enjoying an outing on a boat should have a reliable means of communication for their area, be it a marine radio or a cell phone. Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, so it is recommended that people do not consume alcohol while boating.

Submitted by Leona Baker, The Historical Society of Salisbury Township

At the bottom of Gap Hill, across from Phil’s Barber Shop, is a home built at least 250 years ago. While the deed chain is broken, there is enough to establish that the house was built in the 1700s. There is speculation that it may have been yet another tavern in the valley.

In the early 1700s, William Penn’s agents

5411 Lincoln Highway

were selling property rights in the lush Pequea Valley. Thomas Johnson may have been one of the buyers. Property lines involved wording such as “such-and-such feet from the property of Thomas McIlvaine” and “so many feet from the red oak tree.”

A 1731 deed abstract of Thomas Cowan mentions “so many feet from the property line of Thomas Johnson” and mentions the Philadelphia-Lancaster

Pike as part of that section of the property.

The present owners have discovered that Samuel Johnson the elder inherited the farm upon the death of his father, Thomas Johnson, in 1757. Samuel Johnson the younger, in turn, inherited it from his father. The very word “farm” indicates there was, of necessity, a barn. Presumably, there was also a house, since three generations are mentioned.

Perhaps the years of political unrest leading up to and including the Revolutionary War were what sank the younger Samuel and his family into debt. The next deed record is dated 1787, during the early days of the fledgling United States. It lists James (Samuel the younger’s son) and Margaret Johnson transferring ”168 acres to James Hopkins, esq. in payment of Samuel Johnson’s estate debt for 1052 English pounds, to be paid in gold.” Hopkins apparently did not trust the newly instituted United States monetary system, which had been partially funded by the French.

The deed chain is lost until 70 years later, when the property is advertised in a sheriff’s sale due to ”failure to pay taxes.” At that time, Nathaniel Ellmaker and Samuel Slocum, next-door neighbors, are the purchasers. A “large two-story house, Swisser barn,” plus several outbuildings are listed, indicating a well-established farm, years in the making.

Within two years, Ellmaker unburdened his share of the property to Slocum. That deed includes a sentence stating, “the same as the indenture” and mentioning ”142 acres (more or less)” and listing it as “adjoining,” mentioning by name many of the same neighbors listed in previous deeds. A search of those neighboring deed histories might reveal ownership during those missing 60 years. Slocum farmed there for 20 years, selling those 142 acres to Bernard Lechler of New York, N.Y., in 1880.

When Jennie Potts, wealthy Lancaster County business owner, acquired the acreage is unclear. But when she died in 1923, her will stated this Gap property, then called The Locusts, was to be used as a home for “indigent gentlemen.” Whether this actually materialized is not certain; research was unsuccessful.

The company managing the property took advantage of the housing market high in 1948 to sell the farm to the grandparents of the present owners, starting a three-generation family of dedicated farmers who have made this grand old property their much-loved home.

Information gathered from deed abstracts in Lancaster County archives and deed search by historical society members as well as the memoir of Jenny Potts, who lived on the property in the early 1900s.

The home at 5411 Lincoln Highway, which has since been restored, was built in the 1700s.

League had moved the vet clinic, and (the building) was just being used for storage or whatever we needed it for.”

Prior to opening the shop, Minor visited similar facilities in Florida.

“There are two very large (stores operated by the) Vero Beach Humane Society, and they have 20,000 square feet between the two stores and they (raise) half of their budget,” he noted. “I checked out their stores and talked to their managers.”

He said that the key to operating a successful thrift store is to sell only donated goods and to operate using only a volunteer staff.

“When we were looking at the economics of having donated stuff and (using) all or mostly volunteer staff, it’s all profit,” he said. “If you have to buy things and if they don’t sell, you are wasting money. “

Renovations were made to the facility, primarily by volunteers along with some Humane PA staff members who worked during their free time. Shelving was purchased at a discount from a pharmacy that went out of business.

“We did paint; we added lighting to make it better and drywall. We had a soft opening after Thanksgiving in 2024, and it was actively open after New Year’s,” Minor said. “We had our official grand opening in April.”

There are various rooms in the shop, including a kitchen where glassware, dishes and household

goods are located. There is also a room for fine china and an area where records, books and other media are displayed. There are shelves filled with vases donated by a local florist, and several valuable paintings on display.

“(The building) was already broken up into the rooms; we just opened it up so you could see into them,” Minor noted.

The store is open on Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but more days will be added if volunteers step up.

Volunteer duties include cleaning, pricing and sorting incoming donations.

“If people are unable or don’t want volunteer directly with the animals, this is the way they can help the animals,” Minor noted.

“We ask people to do one shift a month which is four hours.”

In addition to volunteers, donations are welcome.

Needed items are vintage goods and antiques of all types; books, comic books and magazines; glassware, kitchenware and cookware; records, CDs, tapes and other recorded media; toys, games and puzzles; and artwork. All items must be clean and in good condition. Items that are not accepted include furniture, mattresses, televisions, electronics and clothing.

a Revolutionary War battle that took place on Sept. 11, 1777, in Chester County and the surrounding region and spanned approximately 35,000 acres. The study also examined the events of the battle, uncovered French and German journal entries about the battle, and created 1777-era property mapping.

The project was led by the Chester County Planning Commission and the Delaware County Planning Department, with assistance from the Brandywine

Battlefield Task Force. All three portions of the study are chronicled in the Brandywine Battlefield Phased Study, a compendium that covers the battlefield’s northern, southern, and eastern areas, which also includes land in Delaware County and New Castle County, Del.

The study was funded through multiple grants awarded by the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program.

Pollinator Garden Planted at Justice Center

Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz, and Eric Roe joined staff members from the county’s Department of Facilities; Keep Chester County Beautiful; Chester County’s Go Green Committee, an employee sustainability committee; and the West Chester Green

Team in breaking ground on a new pollinator garden at the Chester County Justice Center. The groundbreaking event, which took place on Earth Day, April 22, was the first step in preparing a garden to be planted with more than 400 native perennials, trees, and shrubs. Volunteers were scheduled to

join county staff members in planting the new pollinator garden on May 3.

The pollinator garden aligns with the county’s intention to implement more sustainable landscaping practices at its facilities. This goal is a part of the Chester County Climate Action Plan.

certificate or who wants to brush up on his or her skills may consider taking a boating skills course. Local Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas conduct Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission-approved boating safety courses throughout the year.

People are also encouraged to schedule a vessel safety check. Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas conduct these checks free of charge at any time throughout the year.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard created by an act of Congress in 1939. The Auxiliary supports the Coast Guard in nearly all its missions except law enforcement and military operations. For more information, visit www.cgaux.org.

Breaking ground for the new pollinator garden were (from left) Carrie Avery and Andrew Wiegand from the ChesCo Go Green Committee; Ryan Mawhinney, Keep Chester County Beautiful; Chris Pugliese, West Chester Green Team; Commissioners Eric Roe, Josh Maxwell, and Marian Moskowitz; and Chester County sustainability director Rachael Griffith.

Camping Options Available

The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association (PCOA) encourages members of the public to experience the great outdoors through camping in 2025. Although some federally operated campgrounds are closed this season due to staffing

shortages, plenty of campsites across the state are open for reservations. PCOA’s 220 independently owned campgrounds offer more than 37,000 campsites featuring amenities and outdoor activities. The campgrounds have a variety of camping options, including

A full list of PCOA parks is available at www.pacamping.com, where people may also request a free copy of the printed “Pennsylvania Campground Directory.” For information about outdoor lodging options, visit www .paoutdoorlodging.com.

In addition, Pennsylvania’s public lands provide outdoor recreation with no day-use entrance fees. Visitors may access 124 state parks and 2.2 million acres of state forests open in their entirety. Pennsylvania is home to several national parks and histor-

ical sites managed by the National Park Service, all of which remain open with reduced staffing.

The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association is a trade association dedicated to representing the interests of campground owners throughout Pennsylvania. PCOA provides resources, networking opportunities, and advocacy to help its members succeed in the outdoor hospitality industry. Through initiatives like RV shows, the PCOA promotes camping as a way to experience the beauty of Pennsylvania and encourages RV enthusiasts to explore the state’s many independent campgrounds.
