Octorara

BY FRANCINE FULTON
Three local boroughsParkesburg, Atglen and Christiana - are coming together in a friendly competition to collect food for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC). The large-scale food drive, titled “Battle of the Boroughs,” began on May 19 and will run through Friday, June 20.
Battle coordinators are April Brade of the Parkesburg Parks & Recreation Committee, Bekkah Bitterman of the Christiana Parks & Recreation Commission and Jennifer Grossman, chairperson of the Atglen Parks & Recreation Commission.
According to Brade, each borough will have collection locations around town where people can drop off unopened, nonperishable, unexpired food items. “Each week, they will take the donations over to the cupboard and
weigh in,” she explained, adding that a winner will be declared at the end of the competition.
Brade came up with the idea for the first-time food drive to coincide with the end of the school year.
“Now that food banks are really struggling, we felt there was no better time,” she stated. “And we wanted to get the food donations in before the summer months.
With school ending for the year, many children will lose the breakfast and lunches they get at school.”
“With Octorara being a Title I school, it provides breakfast and lunch, which is a huge benefit for low-income families in our area,” added Bitterman. “With that not being available over the summer months, the food pantry sees more families coming in. We want to boost donations and remind people of the need.”
The coordinators said they were eager to join Brade’s effort.
“We started talking about the
Battle of the Boroughs at our April meeting. It has happened very quickly,” Grossman said. “(Brade) had this idea, and she wanted to run with it.”
“(Brade) approached our group ... and we are really excited about participating,” added Bitterman. “I feel like it is an easy way to give back.”
The OAFC is currently seeking the following donations: pasta sauce and boxed pasta; canned fruit; noodle and rice side dishes; condiments, including ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise; canned beets; peanut butter and jelly; and baby items like diapers, wipes and baby food.
In Christiana, food donations boxes are located at Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., and Sit Stay Play, 28 W. Bridge St. A one-day food collection drive will be held on Saturday, June 7, at Dutch-Way Farm Market, 365 Pennsylvania Route 41, Gap.

It’s more than books on wheels. The Library System of Lancaster County’s (LSLC) bookmobile delivers knowledge, creativity, inspiration and joy.
The bookmobile is kind of like a food truck serving up nourishment for the mind and soul.
“Reading in general is very important,” said Audrey Lilley, the bookmobile’s driver, curator and full-time coordinator. “It’s

TREX benches, crafted from recycled plastic, are being placed in local neighborhoods by members of the Parkesburg Lions Club as a tribute to people who have served the community.
Most recently, a bench was dedicated in memory of Nancy Ballner of Paradise on May 8 at Westminster Place at Parkesburg. Although she was not a club member, Ballner helped the Lions Club with many community projects, including its annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny,
and with food drives for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC).
“Nancy was a friend of the Parkesburg Lions. She helped us with fundraisers,” said Lions president Robin McKenna. “(She was) such a sweet lady.”
The bench is located behind Westminster at 320 W. First Ave., Parkesburg.
The Lions Club plans to continue placing benches in the community. Those who would like to donate plastics may find drop-off containers at the following locations: Parkesburg Free Library,

105 West St., Parkesburg; Fulton Bank, 100 W. First Ave., Parkesburg; Gabe’s Pizza Place, 428 W. First Ave., Parkesburg; and Pine Creek Animal Hospital, 150 Pine Creek Drive, Gap. Items suitable for donation include produce bags, grocery store bags, ice bags, resealable bags, cereal box liners, bread bags, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags and bubble
wrap. All items must be clean. Since it began collecting plastics in 2021, the Lions Club has placed several benches in the area. A bench in front of the Parkesburg VFW, 406 W. Fourth Ave., was dedicated to the late Joann Carmen, who was instrumental in running the Parkesburg VFW for many years.
Another bench in front of the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg, was dedicated to the late Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde. There is also a bench near the bus stop at the Parkesburg Free Library, which was dedicated to the late Jim Norton, a longtime Lion and a member of the Parkesburg Library Board.
A community bench was dedicated at Dyer’s Deli, located at 5739 W. Lincoln Highway, Parkesburg, to honor the late Charlie Scott, a lifelong resident of Parkesburg and longtime member of the Parkesburg Lions Club.
A bench at the OAFC, 714 Main St., Parkesburg, was dedicated to Judy Dougherty, who retired in 2024 after serving the pantry as director for 18 years.
Finally, a bench was placed on the playground of the Octorara Elementary School to serve as a “buddy bench.” The bench is available for students who are seeking a buddy to spend time with.
The Parkesburg Lions Club is always looking for new members. Prospective members are invited to attend a club meeting. Meetings are generally held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month
at 6:30 p.m. at Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St., Parkesburg. When meetings are held at different locations, information is posted on its Facebook page.
For more information about the club and its activities, search for the “Parkesburg Lions Club - New and Improved” Facebook page. Prospective members are also asked to message the club on Facebook or contact McKenna at 484-247-4080.

In Atglen, collection bins are located at Bird’s Nest Salon, 413 Valley Ave.; Atglen Borough Hall, 120 Main St.; Atglen Public Library, 121 Main St.; and Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St.
Drop-off sites in Parkesburg include the lobby at Parkesburg Borough Hall, 315 W. First Ave.; Salon Boninu, 426 W. First Ave.; Homestead Studios on Main, 100 Main St.; Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West St.; and the Grocery Outlet, 110 W. First Ave.
Additional information and dropoff locations will be listed at each borough’s website and Facebook page.
“At the end of the campaign, the borough with the most donated food will win bragging rights. Or maybe a trophy,” said Brade. “I’m still working on that part.”
“What makes this fun is this is a competition, but it will benefit the cupboard, no matter what, which is an incredible idea,” Bitterman added.

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office will hold a seminar, Think Before You Post, on Friday, May 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chester County Justice Center, 201 W. Market St., West Chester.
The seminar will educate youths on the impact of their online behavior and equip attendees with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the internet responsibly.
This year’s seminar will feature speakers from the Chester County Sheriff’s Office, the county’s District Attorney’s Office, and the Chester County Department of Emergency Services. They will share stories, insight, and guidance on the potential long-term consequences of posting certain types of content. The seminar is free and open to students, families, teachers, and other community members, and attendees can register at www.chesco.org/5712/ Think-Before-You-Post. The seminar will also be accessible virtually.
important for kids to be reading. It’s important for them to be able to pick up a book and see characters who look like them. Reading can be inspirational, and with retirees, it kind of comes full circle. I think retirees can find comfort in reading. For all people in between, it’s a way to relax and unwind.”
The bookmobile goes to multiple locations all across Lancaster County,
including Sunrise Grocery, 103 Rosedale Road, Christiana. The next scheduled visit will be on Monday, June 9, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. When not on the go, Lilley parks the bookmobile at LSLC’s main office at 1866 Colonial Village Lane, Suite 107, Lancaster. The bookmobile is a 22-foot-long box truck with a single entrance and equipped with a wheelchair lift and portable book carts.
“If we can fit into the space, we’ll come to it,” said Lilley. “When you get up in there and turn to your left, it’s just walls of books. We can tailor the materials to the crowd we’re going to see. We have shelves of cool stuff. It’s a neat operation. I really love it.”

In an effort to provide reading materials to local citizens who experience difficulties getting to their community libraries, the LSLC bookmobile visits more than 45 unique locations each month, places like schools, retirement communities, churches, local events and child care centers. The stops are typically an hour to 90 minutes in length and
usually well attended. “We want to serve patrons in the community who might struggle to reach their brick-and-mortar libraries,” said Lilley, a resident of West Lampeter Township. “We’re able to meet them where they’re at. We’re always looking for new places to go. We want to talk to patrons. We want to hear what they want to read. That’s how we build our collection.”
“A lot of it is people reaching out to us for bookmobile services,” continued Lilley. “Most of the communities will reach out to us and let us know they’re interested.”

to house 2,000 pieces of reading materials, including fiction and nonfiction books, New York Times bestsellers, children’s books, young readers’ book series, the works of local authors, books about local history and events, religious books, holiday and seasonal books, and large-print books. But the bookmobile also rolls with DVDs, music, audio books, kits, puppets and brain teasers.
In 2024, 1,600 LSLC bookmobile patrons checked out 15,539 pieces of material.
“We offer all kinds of services,” said Lilley. “We can help people look up something. We can print on-site. We can refer people to their local libraries. People can check out books and return books, even if they didn’t get them from the bookmobile. However we can help to bridge that connection.”
“I really love when someone’s not sure what they want and I can help them find it,” Lilley continued. “Then
having them come back and tell me if they liked it or not. Just getting to know patrons in that way is really fun.”
The birth of the LSLC bookmobile can be traced back to the 1960s. The current bookmobile is the sixth vehicle to serve the program.
While the bookmobile is one-of-akind, it’s not all that famous.
“Some people do know about the bookmobile,” said Lilley. “A lot of people will tell me they visited the bookmobile when they were kids. There is an element of nostalgia to it. I’ve also talked to people who said that they didn’t know the bookmobile was still running. I also meet people at a lot of stops who haven’t been to their closest libraries in a while. We’re always trying to get the word out about it.”
