ven as a preschooler, Dylan Houck understood there was a way to help people in need by collecting food for the hungry.

Now more than a decade later, Dylan, the son of Jackie and Thomas Houck of Gap, continues that tradition each spring by holding a Helping Hunger Food Drive to benefit the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB).

Jackie recalls Dylan’s first food drive, which was the impetus for the annual effort. “We had a power outage, and Dylan’s dad and I were talking about people losing food in their refrigerator,” she said.

“Dylan said they could just go to Walmart and buy more (food), but I told him not everyone can afford that.”

younger brothers, Wesley and Tyler.

This year’s Helping Hunger Food Drive began on April 7 and will run through Thursday, May 8. On April 26, Dylan had a food drive for the second consecutive year at the Parkesburg Grocery Outlet, where he asked shoppers to donate items like peanut butter and jelly and snack food.

“People came in and purchased things, and we were able to do a shopping trip while we were there (using donation money),” explained Dylan. “We filled lots of boxes, and Grocery Outlet donated as well.”

“People are hungry, and we need to feed them.”

She said that 4-year-old Dylan was upset and crying and woke up the same way the next morning. “I had a conversation with him and told him we could (collect) food and take it to the food bank,” said Jackie.

“It was a very small and moderate food drive,” Dylan added, reporting that he collected 400 pounds of food over two weeks.

Dylan, now 14 and an eighthgrader at West Fallowfield Christian School, has continued the drive ever since, donating more than 42,000 pounds of food to the CCFB.

“For the 10th anniversary last year, Dylan wanted to collect 10,000 pounds of food, but he got 13,099 pounds,” Jackie said, noting that Dylan is often joined at the food drives by his

On the previous weekend, Dylan and his brothers held a food drive at Dutch-Way Farm Market in Gap. There was also a food collection bin during the food drive at E&E General Contracting in Gap.

Food collected from this year’s drive is scheduled to be delivered to the CCFB on Friday, May 9. “I work at Keller Williams in Exton, and we have a ‘Red Day.’ It’s where the agents go and serve in different ways,” Jackie explained.

“The last three years we have partnered with the food drive, and we deliver the food on ‘Red Day.’ There are agents who will take the day off and collect food, and they help us box it up and deliver it to the food bank.”

Dylan pointed out that the food drive is always held in spring in anticipation of the summer months. “We are basically fueling (families) up for summer,” he said. “A lot of kids are part of a lunch program at school. They eat breakfast and lunch every

Parkesburg hosts Coffee Klatch Meetups

The Parkesburg Coffee Klatch Meetup group formed in March of 2024 when a few friends gathered to enjoy beverages and some baked goods at a local coffee shop. Over the past year, the group has grown and evolved and now meets regularly for pizza and burger nights at local eateries.

The group includes men and women of all ages who enjoy sharing good food and conversation while networking. Attendees hail not only from Parkesburg, but surrounding communities as well, including Coatesville and Cochranville. “We are still going stronger than ever after our first meetup 14 months ago,” said Kathi Rendall, the group’s founder. She noted that at each gathering, attendees are also asked to donate nonperishable in-date food items for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.

Currently, the group meets every other Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Gabe’s Pizza Place, 428 W. First Ave., Parkesburg. On the opposite weeks, burger nights are held on Thursdays at 5 p.m. at Victory Brewing Company, 3127 Lower Valley Road, Parkesburg. These events are subject to change, and the most-up-to-date information can be found on the group’s Facebook page.

There are no fees to participate, and attendees may order food from the menu if they choose.

During the events, the tables are pushed together so that

Sign of the John Adams

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township

Tucked snugly to the west of White Chimneys in Gap is another inn built by Amos Slaymaker in 1798. Erected as a stagecoach stop, this edifice was named the “Sign of the John Adams” to honor John Adams the elder, then President of the United States. It was one of the more important taverns along the Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike.

Seven fireplaces kept the tavern warm, one a large walk-in fireplace in the rear office complex. The four rooms on the second floor provided separate sleeping rooms for men and women. Stagecoach drivers and their men slept in the open attic. There are many visitors’ comments written in charcoal on the walls, one dated June 20, 1822.

The original springhouse, which supplied a cool drink to

The 5,000-square-foot offset T-shaped building has limestone walls that are 17 to 22 inches deep, with 16-by-16-foot rooms and 9-foot-high ceilings. The four rooms in the front were used as the bar/dining room.

The celebration will feature a parade; entertainment; artisans practicing early American activi -

ties; village and township history; antique cars, trucks, and tractors; farm animals; children’s activities; a variety of food; and refreshments. Anyone who would like to share photos, items, or information pertaining to Cochranville and West Fallowfield may search for “Cochranville’s 300th Anniversary” on Facebook or email Cochranville 300@gmail.com. Youths ages 8 to 18 are invited to participate to learn the skills and discipline of shooting sports. This program emphasizes safe handling of firearms equipment while seeking to foster self-confidence and leadership skills in a supportive environment designed

for positive youth development. Families new to 4-H may register for the 4-H Air Pistol Club at http://4h.zsuite.org. Participants must be enrolled in 4-H to join the club.

For more information about the Chester County Shooting Sports program, contact the Penn State Extension Chester County office at 610-696-3500 or ChesterExt@ psu.edu.

Event to focus on sustainability

The Chester County Planning Commission will host the 2025 Sustainability Summit and Expo on Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. The event will take place at West Chester University’s Sciences and Engineering Center, 155 University Ave., West Chester.

A “Sustainable Energy” session will be presented at 10:15 a.m., followed by “Sustainable Landscaping” at 11:15 a.m. The presentations will be repeated from noon to 2 p.m.

Other activities during the event will include an “Ask an EV Driver” car show, weather permitting; opportunities to chat with

neighbors about their experience with solar or geothermal systems, rain gardens, and more; and an expo with more than 40 vendors and community organizations. The program will include a free lunch for all attendees, as well as a native plant giveaway.

The event is meant to help residents work toward cutting 80% of greenhouse gas emissions in the county by 2050. This goal is part of Chester County’s Climate Action Plan.

attendees can sit alongside each other. As guests arrive, they are provided with a name tag and are then asked to introduce themselves and share other information if they choose. At times, Rendall asks people to switch places so they can chat with others around the table.

“Sometimes we play games toward the end when the tables are cleared. We have been here (at Gabe’s) as late as 2 o’clock,” Rendall said. “For burger night (recently), we were there until well after 8, and it starts at 5 p.m.”

For the gathering at Gabe’s on April 21, more than a dozen people were in attendance. There was also a name tag on the table for Randy Litwin, owner of Springhouse Spirits, who passed away in March. “Randy was one of our original members, so I left his name tag on the table. I could not just throw it away,” Rendall shared.

Rendall says she is pleased with how the social group has turned out, noting that there is no set program or agenda. She only requests that people not discuss any controversial topics or politics during the gatherings.

“(I formed the group because) there are a lot of people who need that connection,” she stated, adding that the group originally met at Poured Out Café in Parkesburg but has since outgrown the

space. “Sometimes I can’t come, and (other members) make sure people feel welcome.”

When asked why they are enjoying attending, several attendees cited the importance of getting out of the house in a post-pandemic world. “It’s a break in the everyday routine,” said Bill Glenn, who attends the gatherings regularly. “You get to talk to a lot of people that you know and meet new people that you never knew before. These relationships and these conversations carry on week after week.”

Jack Mariano, a member of the Parkesburg Historical Commission, said that he also enjoys attending the events. “I come for the fellowship, but I have been around there for so long that I like to push the history of Parkesburg on people,” he stated. “This town has a really neat history.”

day, and going into the summer, they don’t have those kinds of programs. They might not even eat for a day. Unless the food bank (provides) things to people, these kids will not eat.”

Jackie noted that the goal of the food drive is not only to collect food items, but to educate people about the need for food in the community. “The beautiful thing about Dylan’s hard work is not only to feed people but to educate people,” she stated. “People (right around you) may be food insecure.”

“There are people you know who may be

wondering where the next meal will come from,” Dylan added.

“Food banks are in desperate need this year,” Jackie stated. “Costs are increasing, and the needs are greater and there are a lot of local food banks that have little to next to nothing. People are hungry, and we need to feed them.”

passersby until 1980, is today a workshop, built on the foundations of the springhouse. Houston Run flows north to the

Pequea Creek between the John Adams and White Chimneys. Amos, scion of upper-class society in Lancaster County and owner

of White Chimneys, was elected as justice of the peace as well as tax collector and used the John Adams’ rear rooms, with a separate entrance for his offices, a store and a bank. He also won the position of postmaster for Gap in 1806.

In those times, a landowner was responsible for the patch of roadway that went past his or her property. When the Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike was built in 1796, a brief portion of the pike passed Amos’ properties. It just so happened that was where the tollgate was positioned, and Amos was com -

missioned to manage the gate and take tolls.

In those days the “post office” was a pigeonholed box with names of box holders on a tag beneath their respective pigeonholes. The “post office” was portable and kept in the postmaster’s home or business. In this case, it was located at Amos Slaymaker’s Sign of the John Adams.

The Gap Post Office was located west of the tollgate, and the citizens of the Gap area were east of the tollgate. As justice of the peace, Amos was used to dealing with petty bickering. But he found him-

self the target of protest, for those thrifty citizens were not happy to have to pay a toll to get their mail.

After several landowners took their complaint to the Court of Common Pleas in Lancaster, Amos was forced to yield to his neighbors and give them free access to the post office.

When Amos died in 1837, his son Henry tried to hold on to the Sign of the John Adams, but Amos’ debts were too great. Henry sold 32 acres with the building, which became a private residence. Subsequent owners were the Duffields, Stauffers, Himeses and Martins, down to Clinton and Anna Martin

in 1925. They built the Stagecoach Motel on the west side of the property. Four generations later, that property was sold off.

Today, the Stagecoach Motel is gone, but the Sign of the John Adams remains, close to an ever-widening Lincoln Highway. The present owners are deeply devoted to the restoration of the old inn and its history.

Information was gathered from Joan Lorenz’s 2002 book, “A History of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania” and the Pennsylvania Historic Resource Survey, 1983.
