Philadelphia Eagles safety
Andrew Mukuba visited Octorara Junior-Senior High School on April 10 to speak with students about his journey to the NFL and about leadership,
resilience and acceptance. The event, a collaboration between the Eagles Autism Foundation, the Parkesburg POINT and JB Sports Ventures, saw students from Octorara Intermediate School and Octorara Middle School have the opportunity to learn
about Mukuba’s upbringing and ask the professional football player questions.
Mukuba, a rookie with the Eagles last season, was born in Zimbabwe; his parents were refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His family immigrated to Texas

White Horse Fire and EMS Company will host its fourth annual White Horse Gallop 5K, 10K and community day on Saturday, May 23.
The event will feature a 10K and 5K cross-country run, as well as a fun run and several free community activities. It will take place at the fire station, 111 White Horse Road, Gap. There is a cost to register.
The race has become known for its unique start, which features a white horse opening the gallop. The horse comes from a local farm.
“When we decided to call it a White Horse Gallop, we felt like we needed a horse,” said Alvin Stoltzfus, one of the organizers of the event.
“I know (the farmer) spent some time training the horse ... he takes a lot of pride in it.”
On the day of the race, registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. The

Sometimes, George Dippner, a member of the Gap Male Chorus (GMC), feels prehistoric.
“It’s almost like a dinosaur today,” Dippner said. “Choral music has taken a backseat, but there’s still plenty of people who enjoy it.”
The Gap Male Chorus, founded in 1922, is still going strong 104 years later in 2026. The group has only had three directors since its inception.
The chorus performs all over the eastern Susquehanna Valley, primarily in Lancaster and Chester counties, but also occasionally in Berks. Its upcoming show is at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, at High View Church, 2470 Leaman Road, Ronks. There is no cost to attend, and a period of fellowship will follow the performance.
Like most of its shows, somebody in the chorus has a connection to the place where it is performing. In this instance, High View pastor Jesse Bills’ father is a part of the chorus.
“We don’t pick a particular congregation,” Dippner said. “It’s kind of nondenominational ... I would rather use another word that would describe us as men from churches of the area that get together to worship.”
The chorus’ numbers have dwindled over the years, but it still has roughly 30 members. The average performer is above 70 years old. GMC currently has two accompanists: Karen Pawson and Laura Trucksess.
Dippner joined the group around the turn of the century. At that point, GMC had nearly

“I would be concerned,” Dippner said about the chorus’ future. “Music in general, in the church, has changed dramatically. Choruses have now turned into worship teams ... choral music is still out there, but it’s not as popular today, especially with the new generations.
“It would be neat if some younger men would actually get involved,” he went on. “It really is a challenge for somebody that really likes music.”
GMC traces its roots back to
Bellevue Presbyterian Church in Gap. It was started by Marshall Miller, who served as the chorus’ first director. Earl Pickel then took over for Miller before Dwylin Beiler grabbed the reins as assistant director around 2000 and eventually lead director in 2011.
Annually, the chorus does five concerts in the spring and five more in the fall; it also practices in the late summer. The show at High View is GMC’s third of the spring slate.
An important part of GMC’s existence is its annual mission project. Every year, GMC picks one local ministry to support by raising funds. This year, it is Handi-Vangelism Ministries International out of Akron, which trains churches to minister to those with disabilities.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, Compass, 1520 W. Kings Highway, Gap, will observe the 75th National Day of Prayer with an ecumenical worship service on Thursday, May 7, at 7 p.m. In addition to prayer, the service will include Scripture and hymns. For more information, call 717-442-4302 or email stjohnscompass@gmail.com.

“It’s really like a love offering,” Dippner said. “We try to get an active member or representative from that ministry to come to one of our chorus concerts, and then they would take an active part in describing their ministry to the people that come. We found that is so effective in getting that mission project moving forward.”

after being granted asylum by the United States when Andrew was 10 years old.
Spending his early years in Africa, Mukuba was more used to what the world defines as “football.” His early years stateside weren’t easy, but football helped him stay steady - and let him hit people, he said.
“It was really difficult for me, speaking English and making friends,” Mukuba said. “To make it to today, I had to make it past some barriers.”
Mukuba played three years at Clemson before transferring to play for his adopted home state of Texas. He was drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
He described his sophomore year of college football as one of the hardest times in his career.
“I was playing the worst football of my life,” he said. “You’ve got to pat yourself on the back when you get out of a tough situation.”
At the Octorara event, Mukuba led students through countless deafening “E-A-G-L-E-S” chants, one of which he was met with when he entered the high school’s auditorium.
The player spoke for about 20 minutes before hand-selecting students to come up on the stage and ask him questions. After answering questions, he gave autographs to students who brought merchandise and posed for photos with students and teachers alike.
“You guys are some of their strongest fans,” said Dwayne Walton, executive director of the POINT. “Thank you so much to everyone and the school administration for allowing us to be here.”
Founded in 2003, the POINT serves youths and families across western Chester County by providing a safe, supportive environment through academic, recreational and faith-based programming. The organization, located at 700 Main St., Parkesburg, is dedicated to helping young people develop confidence, leadership skills and a path toward long-term success.
Mukuba noted that it was his first time speaking in front of a group of students. He also traveled to Reeceville Elementary School in Coatesville later in the afternoon on April 10. JB Sports Ventures said that his Coatesville visit was themed around kindness, teamwork and the importance of being patient and supportive of classmates who learn and communicate differently.
The player left students with the message of “trusting God and working hard,” telling them to never give up on the dreams they believe in.

The Chester County commissioners have announced the return of the Town Tours and Village Walks program, which has been expanded this year in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States. The program is entering its 32nd season, and this year’s theme, “13 Tours for 13 Colonies,” will focus on the places, people, and events in Chester County that molded and defined the complex tapestry of history that shaped the U.S. In addition to the 13 tours, the program will include three lectures.
The program will kick off at the Chester County Courthouse, 201 W. Market St., West Chester, on Thursday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m. The subsequent programs will take place on select Thursdays. All activities are free and open to the public.
The lectures will be “Pennsylvania Ironmasters and the Revolution” on May 7, “When the
Declaration of Independence Was News” on July 23, and “Historic Yellow Springs” on Oct. 15. The walking tours will be “SpringFord Area Historical Society” on May 14, “Woven in History: A Textile Collection at Hibernia Mansion” on May 21, “Women and Minorities in Malvern” on June 4, “Barnard Station” on June 11, “Caln Township Historical Commission: 300th Anniversary of the Old Quaker Meetinghouse” on June 18, “Radley Run Mansion House: A Journey Through Time” on July 16, “Primitive Hall, Ancestral Home of the Pennock Family” on Aug. 6, “Historic Yellow Springs” on Aug. 20, “Oxford Area Historical Association” on Sept. 17, “The Mill at Anselma” on Sept. 24, “A Hotbed of Social Reform in Kennett Square” on Oct. 1, and “Adaptive Reuse in Caln Township: Where the Past Meets the Future in the Heart of Chester County” on Oct. 8.

fun run will start at 8 a.m., followed by the 10K at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K at 8:35 a.m.
Both the 5K and 10K routes remain unchanged. As in the past, runners will leave the fire company and travel south on Route 897 and return on Route 340 (Old Philadelphia Pike). Sections of both roads will be closed during the run; hills will be featured on School Lane Road during the second mile of both runs.
The fun run, limited to youngsters age 9 and under, will be a circular course around the entire station. The fun run portion of the festivities was new for last year’s event.
Following the run, ambulance “touch-a-truck” opportunities, as well as both a bounce house and a candy drop from a ladder truck, will be available. Safety demonstrations will also be conducted,
and the Pennsylvania State Police will stage a helicopter landing.
Food will be available throughout the day. Breakfast will be served from 6:30 to 10 a.m. and will feature sandwiches, along with breakfast bowls and a coffee bar serving lattes and spritzers. Lunch will then be available from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans and fries.
“They do a phenomenal job with it,” Stoltzfus said of the food committee. “It makes it so nice.”
Runners interested in the race, which will be electronically timed by 2L Race Timing and Services, can register at www.runsignup.com/ Race/PA/Gap/WhiteHorseGallop.
Registration forms may also be picked up at the fire company and at local businesses. To receive a free T-shirt, mailed registrations must be postmarked by Wednesday,
Penn State Extension will hold the Chester County Master Gardener Plant Sale on Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Sunday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to noon. The sale will take place at the East Bradford Township Building, 676 Copeland School Road, West Chester.
The annual event will feature a wide selection of plants grown and selected by Chester County Master Gardeners. Options will include native plants, pollinator plants, perennials, annuals, herbs, vegetables, shrubs, deer-resistant plants, and houseplants - all suited to local growing conditions. Chester County Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice on plant selection and gardening techniques. In addition, free seeds will be available while supplies last, and children may participate in hands-on gardening activities. Proceeds will support Master Gardener educational programs and community outreach efforts throughout Chester County. For more information, contact the Penn State Extension Chester County office at ChesterExt@ psu.edu or 610-696-3500.
April 29. Online registrations will close prior to the race.
Participation awards will be given to each child who participates in the fun run. Prizes will also be awarded to the top overall male and female runners, and to the top three males and females in nine age groups, which will be 9 and under, 10 to 14, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and above.
Last year, the event had more than 400 runners.
White Horse Fire and EMS Company has answered over 25,000 emergency calls and was established in 1913. The company primarily serves Salisbury Township but also answers calls in outer parts of Leacock and East Earl townships.
Funds raised by this year’s races will help the fire company in the second phase of its building project, which includes dismantling and rebuilding the existing kitchen and dining room, as well as connecting the new structure to the in-progress fire apparatus that will house two engine trucks, a tanker and a utility truck.
The estimated cost for the second phase of the project is $1.65 million. The third phase will house three ambulances, offices for the EMS division and overnight accommodations for White Horse’s volunteer providers.
Stoltzfus said that the committee hopes to raise $50,000 through this year’s gallop - over half of last year’s figure.
“We have exceptional community support,” he said. “We try and do our part in making it worthwhile for people to show up.”
Sponsorships for the run are available, ranging from bronze to elite packages that include opportunities to advertise at the event. More information about sponsorship opportunities can be found by visiting www.runsignup.com/ Race/WhiteHorseGallop/Page-1.

The tours and lectures will last about 50 minutes. Tours will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the last one leaving at 7 p.m. Lectures will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a question-and-answer time. Preregistration is not required.
