WFCS students take part in Trash Stash service day

Despite unfavorable weather conditions, approximately 200 West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) students from preschool through high school, along with their parents, participated in Trash Stash, an effort to clean up local roadways and parks while also raising money for the school’s operating budget.

This year’s event, held on April 12, coincided with PennDOT’s “Pick Up PA” and “Keep PA Beautiful” campaign initiatives.

Additionally, WFCS had a dumpster available at the school from Harris Metals of Coatesville where school family members and the community could donate recyclable metal, also to benefit the school.

By the end of the day, students and parent volunteers had collected over 100 bags of trash.

“In addition, we filled two large containers with metals,” reported WFCS principal Heather Furlong, noting that for all the scrap metal collected, Harris Metals donated 100% of the proceeds to the school.

“It’s our 15th anniversary, and we wanted to make it special,” said Jennie Straub, executive director of Cornerstone Reproductive Health, when announcing that this year’s Ladies Tea and Auction on Saturday, May 3, will take place at a new venue - the Barn at Paradise Station, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks. “We are partnering with the owners, who are supporters of the ministry. It is very elegant. The way they restored it is gorgeous.”

Community yard sale set in Parkesburg

Parkesburg residents are invited to take part in a spring community yard sale on Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. And in addition to setting up at their homes, sale tables for vendors will be available in Minch Park, courtesy of the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC).

“PAC is adding something exciting to our annual community yard sale,” said PAC member Tina O’Connor. “(There has been a yard sale) for 20 years or more.

There is one in April and one in September. This is the first time we are making Minch Park available.”

Setup for the yard sale will start at 6:30 a.m. Tables under the pavilion in the park will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents may also bring thier own tables to the park.

“We are trying something different,” O’Connor added. “We have quite a few people who live in apartments (without space to set up a yard sale).”

Volunteers included PAC members; students from area schools; and Parkesburg residents Noralee, Ed and Edie Butler, who spruced up the area around the “Welcome to Parkesburg” sign

and added mulch. PAC’s next event will be the Final Friday program scheduled for May 30 at 5 p.m. on the 200 block of Main Street in Parkesburg. Final Friday includes a street fair with vendors, live music, displays by community groups and activities for children. Choo Choo Barn announces student design competition

The Choo Choo Barn has announced its Student Design Challenge, an opportunity for sixth- to eighth-grade students to showcase their creativity and engineering skills. The competition invites students to design an original, animated display concept that could become part of the Choo Choo Barn model train layout.

The challenge will allow young minds to explore mechanical design, engineering and animation principles, all while competing for prizes. The first-place winner will receive $300 and have his or her animation brought to life by the Choo Choo Barn’s staff. The winner’s creation will be permanently added to the display, complete with his or her name featured alongside it. The second-place winner will receive $200, and $100 will be awarded to the thirdplace winner.

Find your next adventure at the PA Family Travel Fair

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”

The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

The event will feature free entry and free parking.

Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.

“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared. “Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”

Several of the vendors have participated in the fair since its inception in 2018, while others are new this year.

“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”

Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.

The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.

The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.

Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.

At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.

“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”

Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastries - will also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.

“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own

students sent donation letters to family members, friends and local businesses to financially support them as they collected the trash. This was taken into consideration when deciding to go ahead with the event on April 12 despite the weather conditions.

“We have a tentative rain date. However, in my 12 years, we have always gone rain or shine,” said Furlong. “This year, it was rain, sleet and cold temperatures. We mailed out over 1,000 letters,

and Maryland. Every year, the company celebrates the independent agents who have provided superior customer satisfaction while establishing a consistent record of profitable growth for the company. This group of agents is referred to as Mutual Benefit’s Inner Circle. As part of this group, Beiler Insurance Agency Inc. will be presented with a gift and a cash award at the annual Inner Circle celebratory event. Since opening its doors in 1978, Beiler Insurance Agency Inc. has served Lan-

caster and Chester counties in Pennsylvania, providing home, auto, life, business, umbrella and farm insurance. President Chris Beiler and vice president Andrew Beiler, first cousins, are continuing the family business from their fathers - previous agency principals Rob Beiler and Clair Beiler. “The lower level (of the barn) is where we will hold the auction,” Straub noted. “The tea and food will be on the upper level.”

Menu items will include homemade scones, finger sandwiches and desserts and an assortment of teas.

hostesses volunteer to decorate a table, and they invite their friends to sit at their table,” explained Straub, noting that prizes are awarded to the top tables. “There are winners for creativity and (other categories).” She added that some table hostesses bring their own teapots and cups and bake individualized treats for the guests.

In addition to the food, the fundraiser will include a live auction led by H.K. Keller. Among the items on the auction block will be tickets to Sight & Sound, Longwood Gardens and the Ark Encounter in Kentucky.

“We get donations from the community with things like gift baskets and wreaths and gift certificates to local businesses,” said Straub. “We buy potted flowers and hanging plants, and we auction those off as well.”

She noted that some of the flowers will be given

as prizes for the table decorating contest.

Atglen troop welcomes new Scouts

New Scouts were welcomed into Atglen Boy Scout Troop 20 on Feb. 24 at the troop’s regular meeting.

New Scouts who recently crossed over from local Cub Scout Packs spent their first two meetings in their new troop learning about camping basics like setting up and inspecting tents and cooking stoves. New Scouts were led by older Scouts on how to unpack and set up the camping stoves.

On March 3, the new Scouts practiced setting up and tearing down the

items several times. Once the stoves were set up and inspected, the Scouts enjoyed cooking hot dogs and the troop favorite - s’moritos. All Scouts enjoyed a game of 9 Square in the Air.

Atglen Troop 20 is an active troop that has weekly meetings, monthly activities, summer camp and annual high adventure trips.

Some of the monthly trips include backpacking and camping. Last month, activities included a day trip to Philadelphia.

Atglen Boy Scouts have been taking part in High Adventure trips since 1983, including sailing trips at Sea Base in the Bahamas or Florida, backpacking trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and a canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada.

The troop meets on Mondays at 7 p.m. at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen. Interested boys ages 11 to 18 are welcome to visit at any regular Scout meeting.

people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”

According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.

“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”

And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.

Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.

“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”

Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.

“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”

Motorists urged to avoid distracted driving

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike), and Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) are sharing resources and encouraging safe driving as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, April. Motorists are urged to avoid all distractions and put down their phone while driving. They are also reminded of Senate Bill 37 - known as Paul Miller’s Law - which Gov. Josh Shapiro signed on June 5, 2024. Effective June 5, 2025, the law prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving, even while stopped temporarily due to traffic, a red light, or another momentary delay.

Paul Miller’s Law prohibits any driver from using a handheld cell phone while driving a motor vehicle. Drivers can still use their phones to alert emergency responders and, if they are using hands-free technology, to make phone calls, use a GPS, and listen to music. Pennsylvania already prohibits drivers from using mobile devices to send, read, or write text-based communications while their vehicle is in motion.

The law is named for Paul Miller Jr., who was killed in a crash with a tractor trailer in 2010 in Monroe County as the result of a distracted driver who reached for a phone while driving. Since Paul’s death, his mother, Eileen Miller, has become a national advocate for stronger laws to curb distracted driving.

Drivers are encouraged to follow several safety tips. If they are expecting a text

message or need to send one that cannot wait, they should pull over and park the car in a safe location before using a cell phone. Drivers may also consider allowing a passenger access to the phone to respond to calls or messages.

People should not engage in social media scrolling or messaging while driving.

Cell phone use is habitforming. Anyone who is struggling to not text and drive may activate his or her phone’s Do Not Disturb feature, silence notifications, or put the phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of the vehicle until arriving at the destination.

Cell phone use is not the only distraction while driving. Anything that takes people’s attention away from driving, their eyes off the road, or their hands off the wheel is a distraction.

For more information on distracted driving, visit www.penndot.pa.gov/safety.

PennDOT offers social media-sized graphics for numerous transportation-related campaigns, including safety topics such as aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving, and seat belts for organizations, community groups, or others who share safety information with their stakeholders.
