The Way Back to One Another

The way back to one another is through community.

On the morning of April 10, the Factory Ministries held its fourth annual Community Leadership Summit.

Business leaders, ministers and community members from Lancaster County and the surrounding areas gathered at the Factory, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, for breakfast and discussion centered around the loneliness epidemic and how to build community in the modern age.

Phil Smith, senior development ambassador at HOPE International, gave remarks centered around his recently released book, titled “The Way Back to One Another,” which he co-wrote with Jeff Galley and Jill Heisey.

Eagles Player Visits Octorara HS

Philadelphia Eagles safety Andrew Mukuba visited Octorara Junior-Senior High School on April 10 to speak with students about his journey to the NFL and about leadership, resilience and acceptance.

The event, a collaboration between the Eagles Autism Foundation, the Parkesburg POINT and JB Sports Ventures, saw students from Octorara Intermediate School and Octorara Middle School have

Smith’s book is a seven-chapter, 184-page piece published in March by InterVarsity Press that focuses on studying Scripture and forming deep relationships by undergoing a return to countercultural practices. Attendees at the summit were given a complimentary copy of the work.

Smith’s remarks centered around what he calls a “loneliness epidemic,” quoting statistics that 54% of Americans say that they are lonely at least once a week and that 15% say they are lonely all the time. The figures aren’t better for those involved in the church.

“They’re sobering statistics,” he said. “Across the board, we live in a culture that is lonely. We’re spending less time together ... we are spending half as many hours each week with family and friends than we were 12 years ago.”

Team Citrax, including (from left) Ryan Mitman, Gavin Bowen, Marreitt Zavacki and Haydin Yoon, won first place in the middle school division.

More specifically, the students had to design a section of factory that uses sustainable practices and then showcase how their functioning machine works, highlighting how it supports environmentally responsible production. Students began preparing for this task in January.

“The challenge encompasses all areas of STEM, requiring students to work together as well as exercise

their writing and oral presentation skills,” said Christine Gray, a gifted support teacher within the district.

“The students at Octorara have enjoyed participating in the competition and appreciate the CCIU’s commitment to continuing to provide this opportunity for students in Chester County each year.”

The students were tasked with constructing a machine prototype that clearly demonstrated sustainability principles by minimizing waste;

maximizing efficiency; and simulating the use of recycled, reused or otherwise sustainable parts.

Both teams, as firstplace finishers, advance to the state competition on Friday, May 8, at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Octorara students will compete against firstplace teams from regional competitions across the commonwealth.

in the elementary division.

“Opportunities like the STEM Design Challenge are critical in helping students apply their learning in meaningful ways,” said OASD superintendent Shawn Dutkiewicz. “By investing in STEM education, we are equipping our students with the skills to think critically, solve complex problems, and express their creativity. It is inspiring to see our students represent the district with such innovation and pride.”

the opportunity to learn about Mukuba’s upbringing and ask the professional football player questions.

Mukuba, a rookie with the Eagles last season, was born in Zimbabwe; his parents were refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His family immigrated to Texas after being granted asylum by the United States when Andrew was 10 years old.

Spending his early years in Africa, Mukuba was more used to what the world defines as “football.” His early years stateside weren’t easy, but football helped him stay steadyand let him hit people, he said.

“It was really difficult for me, speaking English and making friends,” Mukuba said. “To make it to today, I had to make it past some barriers.”

Mukuba played three years at Clemson before transferring to play for his adopted home state of Texas. He was drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

He described his sophomore year of college football as one of the hardest times in his career.

“I was playing the worst football of my life,” he said. “You’ve got to pat yourself on the back when you get out of a tough situation.”

At the Octorara event, Mukuba led students through countless deafening “E-A-G-L-E-S” chants, one of which he was met with when he entered the

high school’s auditorium.

The player spoke for about 20 minutes before hand-selecting students to come up on the stage and ask him questions.

After answering questions, he gave autographs to students who brought merchandise and posed for photos with students and teachers alike.

“You guys are some of their strongest fans,” said Dwayne Walton, executive director of the POINT.

“Thank you so much to everyone and the school administration for allowing us to be here.”

Founded in 2003, the POINT serves youths and families across western Chester County by providing a safe, supportive environment through academic, recreational and faith-based programming. The organization, located at 700 Main St.,

Parkesburg, is dedicated to helping young people develop confidence, leadership skills and a path toward long-term success. Mukuba noted that it was his first time speaking in front of a group of students. He also traveled to Reeceville Elementary School in Coatesville later in the afternoon on April 10. JB Sports Ventures said that his Coatesville visit was themed around kindness, teamwork and the importance of being patient and supportive of classmates who learn and communicate differently.

Summit

Smith addressed the need for community and how leaders could go about building it. Attendees participated in various smallgroup discussions, sharing anecdotes and relevant experiences.

“It’s not good for you to be alone,” he said. “Woven into our DNA is a need for relationship, a need for community, no matter how much we say, ‘I don’t need it.’”

Smith shared his experiences from living in six different countries across three continents, relating his constant movement to the need to build new relationships in new locations. Smith described his shift from the corporate, financial world to his current pastoral, nonprofit role. He called on attendees to be intentional about leaning and depending on one another, asking them to build deep relationships with each other instead of bottling up their struggles and emotions, sharing statistics that most adult Americans claim not to have more than three close friends.

“Choose interdependence over independence,” he said. “Our culture loves the idea of independence ... we really do need each other.”

Smith’s tact to approaching the issue is five-pronged: depending on one another, knowing each other, talking to each other, welcoming all and committing to building strong relationships.

Adam Nagle, who serves as the Factory’s executive director, opened and closed Smith’s remarks.

“We exist to empower people, connect to resources

and build community,” he said of the Factory. “Imagine a life where you don’t have relationships, or those bridges have been burned ... building community is a key part of what we do.”

Chester County Hosts Mental Health Training Program

Chester County is one of six counties nationwide selected by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Keystone to pilot the Crisis Intervention Team - Youth (CIT-Y) training program.

The CIT-Y program - an extension of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training - was created to address the growing number of youths with mental health needs in the juvenile justice system. The first training was held from March 4 to 6 and included more than 15 county departments, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations.

“The CIT program benefits law enforcement, first responders, and community

providers across Chester County,” said the Board of Commissioners in a joint statement. “Teaching effective and compassionate methods for handling the crisis needs of a young person offers a critical opportunity to make a difference in their lives. We are honored to have been chosen by NAMI to be one of the pilot counties to implement CIT-Y programs across the commonwealth focusing on teens and youth. We hope that what is learned here can inform the expansion of CIT-Y.”

Run by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD), CIT-Y teaches law enforcement

officers, educators, first responders, and community providers about adolescent brain development and mental health symptoms in youths, along with strategies for engagement and connection to appropriate services and supports.

Department of Human Services director Pat Bokovitz said, “The staff in MH/ IDD, especially MH/IDD children’s mental health clinical services coordinator Teyanna Brunson, have worked closely with NAMI Keystone Pennsylvania for a number of years and were thrilled to be chosen as a CIT-Y pilot program county. Chester County is

municipal governments, and academic institutions. Over the past several months, she has led the development of a detailed action plan to support the Department of Voter Services and initiated other process improvements.

The Prison Board of Inspectors has appointed Brian Sheller as the new acting warden of the Chester County Prison. Sheller has been the deputy warden since early 2024. Prior to serving in that role, he spent more than 30 years as the chief of the Parkesburg Borough Police Department. During that time, he graduated from the FBI National Academy, served as president of the Chester County Police Chiefs Association, and was on staff at the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus.

The 20th West Chester International Short Film Festival will take place from Friday, April 24, to Sunday, April 26. The event will begin with an opening night party, followed by curated blocks of films, workshops, pop-up blocks, and more. Events will take place at multiple venues in West Chester. Each two-hour block of films, all thirty minutes or less, will include a mix of genres, including dramas, documentaries, experimental works, animated films, and comedies. The films were chosen from a record number of submissions from more than 45 countries. The lineup includes Oscar nominees and winners, local favorites, and stories representing voices from around the world. The Chester Awards will be presented at an event on Saturday, April 25, at 7 p.m., and on April 26, the Closing Night Best of the Fest will showcase a lineup of Chester Award-winning films and fan favorites, along with the announcement of the People’s Choice award winner.
