Carnival to Return to Parkesburg as Part of July 4 Celebration

The newly formed Parkesburg 250 committee is continuing to make plans for a celebration that is set to run in conjunction with America’s 250th birthday this July.

The newest announcement is that is a full carnival will be presented in Minch Park, 111 West St., Parkesburg. The carnival will run on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, July 1, 2 and 3, from 6 to 10 p.m. and on Saturday, July 4, from 3 to 10 p.m.

“It will be a full-fledged carnival,” said Casey Wyatt, a member of the Parkesburg 250 committee.

“Houghton Enterprises is bringing rides, food and game concessions. It has been about 10 to 12 years

since the carnival has been in Parkesburg.”

Admission to the carnival will be free; tickets will be required to take part in the games and rides.

Funds are now being raised by the Parkesburg 250 committee to finance the cost of the fireworks, which are set to go off at the conclusion of the carnival on July 4.

“Because this is the Fourth of July during the 250th anniversary, the cost for fireworks is higher than usual,” Wyatt pointed out. “The committee has been working hard

Aidan Stiger’s arms started to feel heavy.

Shooting 100 free throws in a row is a sneakily physically daunting task, but knowing it’s for charity can provide some relief.

On March 27, the Factory Ministries held its annual b.i.g. Shots event, a fundraiser where participants shoot 100 free throws for charity.

“It’s a mental game,” Stiger said. “You’ve got to keep yourself in it

and try to stay focused.”

The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, holds programming with the goal of addressing poverty and empowering those who are affected by it in eastern Lancaster County and the surrounding areas.

Its annual b.i.g. Shots event, a collaboration with Baron Insurance Group, has been held since 2018. Community members can sponsor shooters either at a flat rate or per shot made.

It’s certainly more unique than

the average fundraiser.

“I was trying to get that muscle memory down,” said Stiger, who was representing Smoker Door Sales. “Then you get one or two there where you lose it for a little bit.”

Stiger, once a prep basketball player for Lampeter-Strasburg, wound up making 65 of his 100 attempts. His brother, Caleb, is also heavily involved with the fundraiser and manages Baron Insurance Group’s Gordonville branch.

Attendees enjoy a pancake breakfast at the Parkesburg VFW, one of Parkesburg 250’s fundraisers. The next event will

Foundation Announces Scholarship

Chester County Community Foundation is accepting applications for the Natalie A.W. Leaf Scholarship Fund. Each scholarship is $2,500.

Natalie A.W. Leaf was a West Chester native and elementary school art teacher who was passionate about skilled craftsmanship and the power of education to transform lives. In the early 1960s, Leaf began restoring her home and discovered a shortage of skilled craftspeople. Upon her

death in 1989, her home and antiques were auctioned off to create a scholarship to encourage Chester County residents to preserve these arts.

To apply by Wednesday, April 15, visit www.grantinterface.com/ Home/Logon?urlkey=chester. More details are available by emailing grants@chescocf.org.

To make a donation or learn more about the Natalie A.W. Leaf Fund, visit https://chescocf.org/ fund/natalie-leaf-charitable/.

Many people get excited about sermons that show how the Lord’s prophecies have been fulfilled. But do you know that there is typology in the Old Testament that Jesus also fulfilled?

• Why was the tabernacle constructed the way it was?

• What was the significance of the feast days?

• Why did they have those different kinds of sacrifices?

All of these picture Jesus Christ and point to Him. We would like to invite you to hear our sermon series. We are doing a sermon series on the tabernacle, how it was constructed, the feast days, the various sacrifices and how they all point to Jesus Christ. Most importantly we will see how they are significant to us today. Sunday morning service starts at 10:40 AM.

Church to Create Mural in Honor of 175th Anniversary

A blank wall on the north side of the education building at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church (PPC) in Atglen will be transformed into a mural, one of the special activities that will celebrate the church’s 175th anniversary this May. The mural will be painted by the congregation members, and the public is welcome to participate.

The 14-by-26-foot mural, which will be located along Ridge Avenue, has been designed by anniversary committee members. Helping to assist in the placement of the mural will be artists Michael Miller and Steve Wilson.

“Our committee has worked on the layout of it, and we have two artists, Steve Wilson, a former member who grew up in the church and is well-known in the Lancaster art world, and Michael Miller, who grew up in Gap and now lives in Reading,” explained congregation and committee member Lisa Rudisill. She noted that both artists are skilled in the creation of community murals.

The mural will not be painted directly onto the wall. Rather, 3-by-5-foot panels will be painted, and the artists will affix the panels to the blank wall to create the finished project.

“They will take the drawing that the committee has designed and worked on, and they will transfer it to big canvas pieces, and we are going to paint them,” explained Rudisill. “We’re painting on polyester interfacing (using) acrylic paint.”

A community art painting day will take place on Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The artists will be on hand to provide assistance and complete touch-up work. Additional painting, if necessary, will continue on Saturday, April 18.

People of all ages, including children, are welcome to paint,

but youngsters must be accompanied by an adult.

“We can take 16 people at a time to paint for a max of an hour. It will be paint by number,” said Rudisill, noting no previous painting experience is necessary.

The mural will feature symbols against a burgundy background

Free Throws

This year, Factory Ministries raised over $43,000 through the fundraiser. The top shooter was Jared Harvey of Red Truck Mechanical, who made 85 shots. Ron Bare of Bare Wealth Advisors was the most sponsored shooter.

Factory Ministries holds a variety of programs aimed at addressing poverty. It has an on-site market, which provides those in need with food that can be purchased with Factory Bucks, which can be earned through attending Factory-based programs.

“It’s a way to empower them,” Factory Ministries communications director Ellie Green said of the market. “This is something that they have done, they have earned.”

All the food in the market is donated from the community, businesses, churches and school districts. If you are interested in donating, contact Kerri Burns, market and community engagement coordinator at 717-575-1538 or kerri@thefactoryministries.com.

Factory Ministries also holds workforce advocacy and adult advocacy programs that support work environments and equip adults with learning and community resources, respectively.

The ministry also partners with Pequea Valley School District and has several youth resources, such as its youth center and the “Building Braves” program.

“As much as possible, we’re trying to make the factory a one-stop shop for our community,” Green said. “If there are resources that you need, as much as possible, we want you to

to match the church’s decor, along with outstretched hands that represent various ages and ethnicities.

be able to access that here instead of having to go across the county.”

The money raised through Friday’s event goes directly toward these programs.

“Our mission is to empower people, connect resources and build community,” Green said. “We do that from birth through elderly.”

Green said that the ministry attracts residents from all over the area, beyond Pequea Valley, as far west as Lancaster city and as far south as Oxford. The ministry regularly gets people in from New Holland, Strasburg and Leola.

If there are resources located closer to where somebody is from, Factory Ministries redirects people to those resources.

To learn more or get involved with Factory Ministries, call 717687-9594, email info@thefactory ministries.com or visit “The Factory Ministries” on both Facebook and Instagram.

“We want as many people to touch this (mural) and be a part of it as possible. At Penningtonville, we have our own congregation, but (the mural is) representing this whole community, which is why there are old, young and different nationalities that are all part of it,” said Rudisill. “Every kind of person has been inside of our church. This is a visual representation of (our community). We want anyone and everyone to help.”

The cross in the center of the mural, which represents the church steeple, was designed by congregation member Dan Miller. “He is a 97-year-old art professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,” Rudisill noted. “It’s a wood cut; that is his specialty. He takes a piece of wood and carves it out (and creates the item) in reverse, like a printing press.”

After the 3-by-5-foot panels have been painted, they will be attached to the wall like puzzle pieces until the mural is formed. “(The artists) will affix it to the wall with some kind

of glue, and they will cover it with a protective coating,” said Rudisill. “We will be finishing the painting in April, and it will be put in place by May.”

PPC’s 175th anniversary celebration will be held on Sunday, May 17. “The mural dedication will be a big part of our anniversary celebration,” said congregation member and committee member Pat Softchin. “We will have a big worship service that day. We invited past ministers, friends and family members of the congregation and dignitaries. One of our former ministers, Jason Link, will be out guest minister.” The event will be followed by a church picnic.

Penningtonville Presbyterian Church is located at 406 Main St., Atglen. Those who would like to take part in the painting are asked to call the church in advance at 610-593-2173 to reserve a one-hour painting slot.
