“Some hit your heart more than others, but you are saving them,” said Mandy Vincolato, co-founder of Toby Time Animal Foundation, when explaining the benefits of fostering dogs that are waiting for their forever homes. “We know they are not our dogs. We are a stepping stone for them to find their homes. We can’t keep them all. If we keep too many, then we can’t save another one. As soon as you adopt one out, there is another one coming behind it.”
Vincolato founded the southern Chester County-based Toby Time Animal Foundation along with Barb Hogstrom, both of whom are seasoned animal rescue volunteers. The newly formed rescue does not have a facility or kennel where dogs are placed, so it relies on fosters who keep the dogs in their homes while permanent owners can be found.
“We always need adopters
because there are always dogs in need, but we (especially) need fosters,” Vincolato said, noting that prospective fosters are asked to complete an application, provide references and sign a foster agreement.
Likewise, potential adopters are asked to fill out an application and take part in a home visit when applicable. “We have a Facebook page, and we are on Petfinder,” explained Vincolato. “We send an electronic application, and we need vet references and personal references (for adopters). I like to go out to people’s homes if they have a dog in the house already. I want to see how the dog is at their house.”
The rescue also keeps in touch with adopters to ensure that all is going well.
Volunteers with the rescue recently visited Tractor Supply Co. in Parkesburg for Toby Time’s first adoption event. Visitors were able to talk with founders, meet with adoptable dogs and their fosters

Food drive benefits Octorara Area Food Cupboard
BY FRANCINE FULTON
As part of an ongoing effort to provide food to people in need as well as to raise awareness about its mission, Cherie Myers, new director of the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC), held a food drive recently at Dutch-Way Farm Market in Gap. She was accompanied by her granddaughter Kyla Ash.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 22, Myers and Kyla were stationed in the lobby of the market. Shoppers were offered
a list of items needed by the OAFC as they entered the store, and the donations were collected as shoppers exited the store. As donations came in, they were placed in the OAFC trailer, which was parked outside.
The food products on the list were canned pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter and jelly, syrup, condiments, salad dressing, canned fruit, applesauce and heat-and-serve soups.
Shoppers responded positively to the food drive. “People have been very generous,” said Myers.

Lions Club plans Easter events,
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Members of the Parkesburg Lions Club will host Easter events for the community on Saturday, April 12, as well as a spaghetti dinner later in the month.
The club’s third annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny will take place at the Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St., Parkesburg, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Breakfast, which will be prepared on-site by Lions Club members, will include pancakes; breakfast meat; eggs; and beverages, including coffee,

Rescue volunteers with adoptable dogs include (from left) Sebastian Vincolato with Violet, Mandy Vincolato with ChaCha, Sydney Vincolato with Oreo and Barb Hogstrom with Cedar.
Helping preparing last year’s breakfast were Lions Club members (from left) Helen Liebig, Jane Rice, Karen Holmes, and Karen Fronefield.

Township, there was travel on the east-west Great Minquas Path and the north-south Octororo Trail. As European pioneers began to migrate west from Philadelphia and north from Newcastle ports, the trails also migrated a bit to accommodate wagons as well as foot traffic.
This rutted dirt highway, the Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike, had switchbacks on the mile-long Gap Hill, now known as Old Lincoln Highway. The other main highway through Lancaster County was King’s Highway, better known today as Route 340.

tea and water. There will be separate prices for adults and children ages 2 to 9. Children under age 2 will be able to eat for free. The Easter Bunny will be on hand and available for pictures.
Organizers are requesting that attendees make reservations for the breakfast. To register, contact either Karen Fronefield at 484678-4231 or Karen Holmes at 717380-3098 or send a message on the “Parkesburg Lions Club - New and Improved” Facebook page.
Cash, check and Venmo will be accepted for payment. The registration deadline is Monday, April 7.
The Lions Club will also present Easter egg hunts the same day in Minch Park, 111 West St., Parkesburg. Egg hunts for children ages 6 to 8 and 9 to 12 will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by egg hunts for younger children age 2 and under and ages 3 to 5 at 10:30 a.m.
Attendees should bring baskets or bags to collect eggs. Registration is not required.
Children will be hunting for eggs that will be hidden by volunteers throughout the park. “We hide around 1,000 plastic eggs,” noted Robin McKenna, Lions Club president. “Most (eggs) have candy, but some have little toys or papers to redeem for a book or toy. We will also have one special (prize) egg per age group.”
Following the Easter events, the Lions Club is planning to host a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, April

The Parkesburg Lions Club is always looking for new members. Prospective members are invited to attend a club meeting. Meetings are generally held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at Parkesburg Baptist Church. When meetings are held at different locations, information is posted on the Facebook page. According to Hogstrom, the rescue is named in honor of the two founders, who both lost dogs named Toby, which coincidentally both had the same nickname, Toby Time. The rescue was founded “to keep their dogs’ spirits alive.”
“Both of us were (volunteering with) rescues, but we decided to focus on this area,” noted Hogstrom.
Among the dogs at the meet-andgreet event were Jett, a male Jack Russell terrier mix; Oreo, a female Jack Russell terrier puppy; ChaCha, a shiba inu and corgi mix; and Cedar, Violet, Lily and Aster, which are Australian shepherd puppies. Also up for adoption is Lola, a 4-year-old spayed Belgian shepherd/Malinois who was formerly a puppy mill breeding dog.
Ruth Burrell of Parkesburg came out to the event with her dog, Milo, whom Hogstrom fostered. Burrell follows the rescue on Petfinder. “His pictured popped up, and I fell in love,” she stated.
Vincolato noted that future plans call for additional meet-and-greet
Presentation to focus on Quakers
Sadsbury Friends Meeting, 1089 Simmontown Road, Christiana, will host a presentation at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5.
Ernest Schreiber, a member of Lancaster Friends Meeting and a former executive of a local newspaper, will offer information from his book “A Brief History of Quakers in Lancaster County, 1658-1959.”
The Quakers are a generally quiet, contemplative sect formally
known as the Religious Society of Friends. Quakers were a friendly presence during the Christiana Riot and Underground Railroad, which played a part in moving the nation toward abolishing slavery. Quakers also ran successful businesses and were politicians, educators, farmers, and temperance advocates. The talk is free and open to the public. For more information, call 484-985-0454.

Food drive
“People bought two or three bags and big jars of things,” added Kyla, who is a student at Octorara Junior-Senior High School.
Myers said that she also hopes the food drive helped people learn about the OAFC. “It was a way for me to get out in the community,” she said. “I have seen several people I know so far.”
The OAFC serves all of the Octorara Area School District as well as residents of the Pomeroy, Sadsburyville, Compass, Wagontown, Doe Run, Gum Tree and Ercildoun areas. Existing clients must complete paperwork - which includes providing proof of residency - every
July, and first-time clients can register when they arrive.
The OAFC is always in need of nonperishable food donations. Each month, the OAFC posts a list of needed items on its website, www.octfood.com. For April, the list includes canned red beets, fruit and vegetable soup; macaroni; and boxed pasta.
Volunteers are also needed to complete a variety of tasks at the OAFC, including receiving and sorting incoming donations, stocking shelves, assisting food pantry clients, packaging and cleaning up. The OAFC is also seeking a volunteer part-time bookkeeper as well as businesses or
organizations that are willing to host a food drive.
For more information, call 610857-4000 or email oafc424@gmail.com. More information about the food bank is available at the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com/ OctoraraAreaFood Cupboard.
The OAFC is located at 714 W. Main St., Parkesburg, next to The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center.
Hours of operation are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and from 2 to 3:45 p.m.

toward the Pacific coast, the need for smoother, wider roads arose. In 1913, the Lincoln Highway Association (LHA) was established to form a coast-to-coast highway system “… like nowhere else on earth … without toll charges.”
Financing was never easy, requiring a constant publicity campaign. Auto-related businesses as well as the cities that would profit from the across-the-nation superroad were contacted for funds.
Congress authorized construction of the Lincoln Memorial Road, but only from Washington to Gettysburg. To convince Congress to extend the road to San Francisco,
the LHA set out in a convoy of cars and trucks to navigate the entire country. The trip of 3,000 miles took travelers through 34 days of mud pits in Iowa, sand drifts in Nevada, flooded roads and cracked axles and through the experience of radiators boiling over before parading triumphantly into San Francisco, passing crowds of cheering residents.
LHA gained further attention of federal as well as local funding when the U.S. Army used the route as part of preparations for military training for World War I. Local bond issues helped

In Pennsylvania, the route roughly followed the 62-mile Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike, first laid out in 1758. The official route was announced in October 1913, and cities all along the designated route held bonfires and fireworks, concerts and parades, even street dances.
By 1916, an official guidebook estimated the trip would take 20 to 30 days, assuming the average driving speed would be 18 miles an hour. The motorist was advised to travel with tire chains, shovel, axe, jacks, tire casings and inner tubes, plus a set of tools. Anticipating the mud the motorist could expect

The Lincoln Highway officially begins with a marker at Times Square in New York City and ends at a pylon in the center of San Francisco. It was dedicated all across the nation at 1 p.m. on Sept. 1, 1926.
Simultaneously, Boy Scout troops across the nation placed a total of 3,000 concrete markers at important crossroads, minor crossings and other intervals to assure motorists that they were on the right road. The signs carried the Lincoln Highway insignia, a bronze medallion that stated, “This Highway Dedicated to Abraham Lincoln,” and a directional arrow. Many of those 3,000 markers have disappeared as roads were widened. Lancaster County has several, but the closest to Salisbury Township is in Paradise, on the south side of the road just west of the bridge at Ambassador Road.
Salisbury Township has an even older marker from the earliest days of Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike days: a stone pylon etched with “45m … P, 19 … L,” signifying 45
miles to Philadelphia and 19 miles to Lancaster. Salisbury Township has always had an important connection to this nationwide highway.

to
Host “Then Sings My Soul”
Experience joy this Easter season at The Barn at Paradise Station, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks, with “Then Sings My Soul,” an original musical program all about hymns, their histories, and how they connect to the life and ministry of Billy Graham.
Featuring professional area vocal trio Perfect Harmony, with Katrina King on piano, this program has been performed more than 140 times in the last seven years throughout the Lancaster County area and beyond at locations like Dollywood Theme Park in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; The Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, N.J.; and The Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, N.C. The program is now proud to call The Barn at Paradise Station home.
Kat Prickett, owner and producer of LeeP Productions LLC, as well as owner of the iconic Paradise Station property, said, “It is absolutely thrilling to be able to get to share this program with guests from all over the coun-
try, as well as the Lancaster County community, and continue to share the ministry and message of Billy Graham - and that is that God loves you.” The show takes guests on a musical journey through hymns that were made famous by or written by people saved at the historic Billy Graham crusades.
The Paradise Station property houses The Red Caboose Motel, Casey Jones’ Restaurant, and The Barn. The Barn at Paradise Station is the original bank barn on the property, dating back to 1812. After an extensive 18-month renovation process, the venue opened in May of 2023 as a wedding, event, and theatrical venue. It is fully ADA compliant, climate controlled, meticulously restored, and technologically enhanced, allowing theatergoers to experience a professional and inspiring show in a unique and intimate environment.
“Then Sings My Soul” will be presented on Wednesdays, April 9 and 16, and Saturdays, April 12 and 19. For show dates, times, and tickets, visit www.barnatparadisestation .com/events or call 717-288-7942, ext. 118.
