Friends to host spring tea

The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library will present a “Hop’n Into Spring” tea party on Saturday, March 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event, which will feature afternoon tea fare, will take place at Christiana Fire Company, 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana.

Although it is not required, attendees are encouraged to dress in tea attire, which includes hats or fascinators, which are decorative headpieces that are attached to the head with a hair clip or comb. A limited number of fascinators will be available for purchase at the event.

The tea is a popular annual event, and each year has its own unique theme. Last year’s tea was themed “Welcome Spring.” Previous themes have included “Downton

Abbey” and “Gone With the Wind.”

During the event, tea will be served in authentic teacups with saucers. “We will have an assortment of sweets and savories. We will have scones, finger sandwiches and desserts,” said Friends vice president Jeannette Kolb. “The tables will be all set when people come in.”

There will also be several photo-op backgrounds, and new this year will be acoustic guitar music.

There will also be an opportunity for guests to win door prizes.

All proceeds from the tea will benefit the library.

A fee will be charged per person. Participants must be at least age 14 to attend.

Tickets are also available for purchase at the library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. Cash, check and Venmo will be accepted for payment. Tickets must be purchased

by Saturday, March 22. For more information or to reserve a ticket, call the library at 610-593-6683.

Volunteers with the Friends group, which maintains and runs the Read Moore Book Store in the lower level of the library, hold several special events each year, which raise funds for library programming. In addition to the tea, the Friends sponsor spring and fall book sales and a plant and flower sale in May.

The Friends reported that the spring book sale held on March 6 to 8 met its goal and raised enough funds to allow the library to host a program by Jesse Rothacker, The Reptile Guy, founder of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary.

Children’s book author visits WFCS

In celebration of Read Across America Week, West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) hosted Cynthia Petillo, author of the children’s book “The Adventures of Chips & Salsa.” During her visit on March 7, she read her book to the students and provided information about her inspirations, the writing process and more.

Petillo was invited to the school by WFCS elementary coordinator and first-grade teacher Janine Richards, who met the author during a vendor event in Parkesburg.

Petillo explained that the book is about a good-natured beagle named Chips. He and his friends welcome a new dog to the neighborhood named Salsa, a tiny, shy Chihuahua. The two dogs become fast friends and, before they know it, find themselves on an adventure in the park. Readers learn that even through Salsa is tiny, he proves that loyalty, friendship and love come in all sizes. “I like little dogs,

Participants will be able to bid on items such as Philadelphia Phillies tickets; artwork; gift baskets; and experiences at local theaters, museums and restaurants as part of the second annual virtual silent auction being held by the Volunteer English Program (VEP) in Chester County. Bidding will open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, and continue through 6 p.m. on Friday, April 4. Those interested in bidding may find a link to the auction

website at www.volunteer english.org and at www.facebook .com/VolunteerEng.

“On the auction website you can see the countdown to the day and see a sample of things that already have been posted,” noted Terri Potrako, VEP executive director.

In addition to the items already mentioned, other features on the auction block include quilts; golf balls, a bag and apparel; a handcrafted crepe paper flower bouquet; antique cups and saucers; a beach house

rental in Ocean City, N.J.; and a set of Chinese lacquer bowls and plates.

Registering is free, and once bidding begins, participants will be given updates. “Over the three days, if someone keeps bidding over you, you are notified,” Potrako explained. “It gives you a chance to go back in and bid again.”

She emphasized that the auction site is secure and that people can feel safe bidding on the items they are interested in. “You have complete control over your bidding,” she stated. “No one knows who you are; it is a private virtual auction. We don’t publish the winners.”

Once the auction is concluded,

arrangements will be made for the auction winners to receive their items. “You are contacted, and we follow up and make arrangements to deliver or mail the item or have you pick it up,” Potrako noted. “If you are in the area, we coordinate and meet with you at a designated location or the VEP office.”

She said that last year’s virtual auction was a success, raising $10,000 for the organization. Proceeds will again be used to fund the VEP program, which provides English language tutoring to adult immigrants and refugees in Chester County.

“(Funds) go to general operations for the program,” noted Potrako. “It provides us the ability to train volunteers and gives us the ability to support adult learners. With that (money), we can purchase online subscriptions that the adults need for learning.”

The auction website also allows people to donate to the program. “If you are not interested in doing the bidding, there is an opportunity on the bidding site to make a donation,” said Potrako. “That can be of any value, and it’s all for the general fund.”

VEP is always in need of volunteers willing to provide one-onone tutoring for adults looking to improve their English language skills. Tutors also help students understand American culture.

Prospective tutors are invited to attend the next tutor training session, which will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, March 25; Thursday, March

8 p.m. each evening.

According to Potrako, the tutor training workshop is designed to fully prepare volunteers to teach English to adult, non-native speakers. Prior teaching experience or fluency in a language other than English is not required.

For more information about the upcoming tutor training workshop and to register, visit www.volunteerenglish .org/tutors/tutor-training-workshop. Those with questions about the auction or the training may call the VEP office at 610-918-8222 or email terri.potrako@volunteerenglish.org.

and I always had little dogs,” Petillo said. “I think that beagles are adorable, and Chihuahuas have such a big personality that I wanted to write a story about them.”

Students took part in a question-and-answer session with the author, and one student asked about the writing process.

“I had the story up here in my head, and I knew what I wanted to write about - dogs and friendships and new experiences,” Petillo said. “We have all gone through new experiences - maybe moving to a new neighborhood or school or meeting new friends. I sat down and typed the story into the computer, and then I had to rewrite it again. I found a publisher and read the story to him, and he liked it - a lot. And it took off from there.”

I never knew there were that many kinds of tortilla chips. To the side, there were jars of salsa. I’m driving home, and I started thinking, ‘Chips and salsa,’ and it was … stuck in my brain. The next day I decided to write a book about chips and salsa.

Salsa is a perfect name for a Chihuahua.”

After Petillo related the grocery store incident, Richards told the students, “You can find inspiration anywhere to write a good story.”

Another student asked how the dogs in the book got their names. “About a few months before I created the book, I was at the Giant food market and it was right before the Fourth of July, when most people have picnics,” she recalled. “As I was walking through the aisle, I wanted to find a snack for Fourth of July. I came across a big pallet that was loaded with all types of tortilla chips;

Petillo, a resident of Kennett Square, pointed out that the setting for the book is Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square. “They have a playground there, a big amphitheater where they have musicians perform, basketball courts, tennis courts and walking trails. It is a beautiful park,” said Petillo. “If you have a chance to go there with a parent or maybe a class trip, I think you would really like it. They actually have an enclosed (area) for dogs to run around.”

Petillo noted that the most difficult part of getting a children’s book published was choosing an illustrator, adding that she eventually chose Ana

Sebastian. “I can’t draw, but I had an idea of how I wanted my characters to look,” she said. “It took about a month to go through all the illustrators’ portfolios to find someone I liked. When I saw (Ana Sebastian’s) work, I liked what she put forth.”

Petillo shared some words of wisdom with students who may be interested in becoming authors.

“Whenever you do write a story, make sure it is something you are interested in or passionate about or something that happened to you,” she stated. “What makes a story so good is believing in the story and having enthusiasm about it, and then you get to share it with other people.”

Another student asked if any other books are in the works, and Petillo reported that she currently has a rough draft of her next title. “The possibilities are endless because adventures are there everywhere around us if we just open up our eyes and our mind,” she said. “Chips and Salsa can have a lot of adventures for many, many years.”

Her final message to the students: “As long as you love learning and reading and like meeting people, you will have so many adventures in your life. It is limitless what you can experience and what you can do.”
