Octorara Student Honored As Good Citizen

Joseph Pizolato, a senior at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, was one of 11 students recognized as Good Citizens by members of the Chester County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) during a ceremony held on March 9 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester.

Beverly Lawler, chairperson of the Good Citizens Committee, explained that the honor is presented annually to students who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The students are chosen for the honor by their respective high schools.

“In August, I contacted area high schools requesting their assistance in selecting one senior from their school who demonstrates the traits of a good

citizen,” she stated. “Today, we are honoring 11 students because of their commitments to their schools and their communities. These students will become the leaders of our future.”

Lawler related a brief history of the Good Citizens Award, which was established in 1934 and originally bestowed upon only one student per state. By 1952, the award was expanded so that each high school could select one Good Citizen honoree.

Lawler provided a brief biography of each student, noting that Joseph is involved in the Octorara music program. He plays the trombone and is the drum major for the marching band. He is also active in varsity track and field.

Joseph is a member of the Parkesburg Baptist Church youth group, volunteering locally and taking part in mission trips to other states.

Positive Prom Fashion Show Planned

The Girls Run the World Club at the Octorara Junior-Senior High School will hold its fifth annual Positive Prom Fashion Show on Friday, March 20. The fashion show will display some of the beautiful prom dresses that are available for students to “purchase” from Kasie’s Closet in exchange for donations of nonperishable food items.

The Positive Prom Fashion Show will be held in the high school auditorium during the school day for students only.

The Promise Players theater group will present “Smoke on the Mountain” at Lampeter Church of the Brethren on March 20 to 22 and 26 to 29. was recently released from prison. As the musical unfolds, each family member shares a story about their beliefs.

In a reference to Stanley’s time in prison, Support for Prison Ministries has been selected as the beneficiary of the show’s proceeds. “It’s a different role for me,” Hess said about Uncle Stanley. “In past shows, my parts were more comical. This is a more serious role for me.” That is not to say that Stanley is an entirely solemn character. The interaction between the Sanders brothers is often humorous, Doreen noted.

June’s antics also provide some levity as she believes she has a gift for interpretive signing, which draws heavily from pantomime. This is Shirk’s first time appearing with Promise Players.

“It’s the biggest role I’ve ever had, so that’s exciting,” she said.

Hatalsky and Hostetler are also Promise Players newcomers.

Hostetler said he auditioned for the show because he likes the music. He will play guitar on two songs. Hatalsky occasionally plays piano and Shirk takes a turn on the washboard and tambourine during the show. The primary accompanists, however, are McVey, Kilby, fiddler Randie Rineer, mandolinist Larry Russell, and bass player Abby Hylton.

The singing Sanders family is heading into town … in North Carolina in June 1938. The family’s entre into performing traditional and bluegrass gospel songs after a five-year hiatus is the subject of “Smoke on the Mountain,” the latest show to be produced by the Promise Players theater group.

Performances will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26; Fridays, March 20 and 27; and Saturdays, March 21 and 28.

Matinees will begin at 2:30 p.m. on March 21 and 28 and on Sundays, March 22 and 29. Seats may be reserved by visiting http:// lampcob.com/promise-players.

Payment will be accepted at the door. Children age 12 and under may donate nonperishable food items for local foods banks in lieu of payment. Free child care will be provided for children under age 6.

The stage will be placed in the corner of the sanctuary and the chairs will be rearranged so that even those seated in the back corners will have a sightline to the action. The new stage location will accommodate a larger audience, too. Promise Players shows often sell out, and high attendance is anticipated for “Smoke on the Mountain.”

“About 10 years ago, someone

approached us and said, ‘You ought to do it.’ We looked into it, but it cost $3,000 plus the cost of scripts, music, and other production costs,” Promise Players director and founder Doreen Creighton recalled. “The same person came back to us two years ago and asked if they got people to help fund it, would we do the show.”

The cast features seven actors and a pit of five musicians, two of whom - guitarist Ron McVey and banjo player Tim Kilby - are members of Summit Hill Bluegrass Band. “It is a popular play, and the reason it’s popular is the music,” Doreen said, describing the music as Southern gospel and bluegrass, featuring close harmonies. “The score includes wellknown Southern gospel hymns that people love, plus a few originals,” she said.

The entire show takes place in a North Carolina Baptist church, which is led by Pastor Oglethorpe (Tim Creighton). After the guest musicians burst onto the scene and sing their first number, Sanders family patriarch Burl (Tim Strawser) introduces his wife, Vera (Nancy Snyder, who is also the production’s music director); their daughter June (Sarah Shirk); and their fraternal twins Denise (Sophie Hatalsky) and Dennis (Doug Hostetler).

The community is invited to an open house at Waterway Church, 550 Waterway Road, Oxford, on Sunday, March 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be tours of the building, and the church’s worship band will provide live music. Snacks will be available. There will be information about the church and its history along with pictures that connect the new Waterway Church with its previous identity as Media Mennonite Church.

The name and location have changed, but the leadership, congregation and worship philosophy have not. “It will be a homecoming of sorts,� pastor Jesse Johnson said.

Media Mennonite Church recently moved to the Waterway Road location, with the first Sunday worship service held there on Feb. 16. Sunday school for people of all ages starts at 9:30 a.m. and worship is at 10:30 a.m.

Johnson explained that the main reason for moving the church was a lack of room. The former location on Media Road was able to handle about 150 worshipers, but the congregation numbers closer to 250. That meant holding two identical services each Sunday morning.

Talk about the need for more space began in 2006. “In 2009, we decided as a congregation the best option was to find a bigger building,� Johnson said. “There was nothing we could find that we could afford.� “There was this 26-acre property we purchased in 2010,� he continued. “Since then, we’ve been making plans. It took us a long time. We were trying to be intentional, so that our whole congregation was engaged.�

The new building is designed to serve about 400 people. Onethird of the building is devoted to the worship area, another third for Christian education and the final third for offices. The church will continue to offer a junior high-age youth group, a senior high youth group, adult small groups and vacation Bible school. “This space for right now allows us to do what we’ve always done (but) with less crowding,� Johnson explained.

“We have not added a lot of new programming. For right now, we’re getting adjusted to being here.�

The building is also available for use by community groups. “We look forward to keeping our doors open for more community and faith-based gatherings,�

Johnson said. “Our desire is to plug in and continue to work with the other churches in (the area). It is exciting to be able to offer our space to the ministerium and the community at large.�

The name change for the church follows the historic pattern of the church being named for its location. “It’s a geographical landmark that lets a lot of people in the area zero in on us,�

Johnson said, adding that the church is still an Evangelical Mennonite congregation. “We’re still teaching the same things we taught at Media Mennonite Church. We subscribe to the same theology.�

The church is still in the midst of a capital campaign to pay for the building project, and the Media Mennonite Church building is for sale.

There are no immediate plans for additional construction at the Waterway site, but there are dreams for the future that could include a ball field, walking trails or community gardens. “Right now, we don’t have any plans, but lots of dreams and hopes of how this can unfold over the next several years,� Johnson said.

For now, the church remains focused on its main mission. “Our goal is to help everyone we know become more like Jesus Christ. We want everyone to learn about Jesus,� Johnson said. “We have our doors open for anyone to come and discover more about the Lord.�

True Goal Hockey will be held at the church beginning Tuesday, March 31. Students in group A, which will include grades one through three, will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Players in group B, in grades three through six, will meet at 7:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. The program will conclude on Thursday, May 21.

The program, which will teach the fundamentals of floor or deck hockey, will follow a weekly progression, beginning with play evaluations, team introductions, rules, and league orientation the first week. During the second and third weeks, the teams will practice with coach assistance and begin scrimmaging. During weeks four through seven, the teams will begin playing each other, and during week eight a possible playoff will occur.

According to Kauffman, children who wish to take part need not have any experience with hockey. “(The program is) open to anyone who wants to learn the game,� he said, noting that those wishing to play field hockey later on will find there are similarities in handling the stick. “It will require some of the same motor skills,� he noted.

Pequea Baptist’s interest in teaching sports to children began in 2010 when the church began running an Upward Basketball program.

Organizers have based the True Goal Hockey program on that model, and biblical principles and lessons are incorporated into the coaching curriculums. The director for the True Goal Hockey League will

Kauffman said that the program can accommodate up to 70 participants but that coaches hope to see at least 60 area students sign up so that they can organize four teams in each age bracket. “We could have a threegame schedule for the first round and then play those same teams again,� explained Kauffman, who added that students who have attended past programs come from Octorara, Coatesville, and Twin Valley school districts in addition to Pequea Valley.

Brownie Girl Scouts from the Friendly Valley Service Unit recently spent a day learning and earning their Wonders of Water Badge. the water cycle, explored the importance of wetlands, learned about different creatures in the ocean, and gained knowledge about the power of water.

Through stories, role playing, songs, games, and hiking, they learned about many ways that water is used and how to save water. They also created posters to spread the message about saving water.

Some of their suggestions for

saving water include the following: collect rainwater for washing cars and watering plants, fix leaking faucets, turn off the faucet when brushing one’s teeth, and fill the bathtub only half full or take a short shower.

The program was run by Girl Scout volunteers. Two Cadette Girl Scouts helped with the program and earned their Leader in Action Award for working with Brownies.

Refunds Can Support MFRAP

Canine Egg Hunt Slated Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) will hold a canine egg hunt at its Golden Gateway campus, 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds, on Saturday, March 28, at 11:30 a.m. The gates will open at 11 a.m.

The event is open to the public, and all dog- and humanfriendly dogs are welcome. Dogs are required to remain on a leash. The event will be held rain or shine.

Additional games will follow the egg hunt. The event will also include drawings and food for purchase. A nominal suggested donation per dog will be received at the event. Additionally, the Easter Bunny will be onsite for photos.

Since the program began in 2006, more than $1.9 million has been donated by individuals filing their Pennsylvania personal income tax returns and through private donations. Members of the armed forces who are residents of Pennsylvania are eligible to apply for assistance while they are serving on active duty for 30 or more consecutive days with the Army, Army Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, or the Pennsylvania Army or Air National Guard.

All members of the armed forces who were discharged for medical reasons are also eligible to apply for assistance for up to four years after a medical discharge. In addition, reserve component service

members, including Pennsylvania National Guard members, and their families may be eligible for a grant for a period of up to three years after release from a qualifying active duty tour.

The program also applies to certain family members of eligible service members who are Pennsylvania residents. Applicants must show that they have a direct and immediate financial need as a result of circumstances beyond their control.

Additional donations may also be made. Donations are tax deductible to the extent authorized by federal law.

State Sen. Andy Dinniman announced recently that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) approved more than $36,000 in grants for four historical and cultural organizations in Chester County.

The PHMC grants are as follows: $17,441 for the Chester County Historical Society, $4,000 for Historic Sugartown, $9,720 for Historic Yellow Springs and $4,490 for the Wharton Esherick Museum.

The funding comes through the PHMC Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program, which provides support for resources and operating expenses to museum and historical organizations according to a formula based on their size and operating budgets.

The Chester County Historical Society also received a $6,692 Historical & Archival Records Care (HARC) grant for the processing and rehousing of the Schramm Inc. photograph collection. The grant project will focus on the housing, arrangement and description of photographs from Schramm Inc. through its history - from making parts for the World War II U.S. Army Signal Corps to working on a variety of mining and construction equipment.

Schramm Inc. was founded in 1900 with an original focus on the manufacturing of engine-

driven machinery and portable air compressors. In 2010, it supplied equipment that was used in the rescue of 33 Chilean miners, which Schramm Inc. calls its highest accomplishment. The rescue mission took almost 70 days, and Schramm’s equipment played an important role in saving the miners.

In November 2019, Schramm Inc. was sold, following a June filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Schramm II Inc. completed the purchase, with GenNx360 Capital Partners, a private equity firm, owning Schramm II. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Brandywine Health Foundation is sharing two new opportunities with the community.

One will aim to help area youths live healthier lives and the other will recognize an outstanding member of the community for his or her dedicated service to the greater Coatesville area.

In alignment with the Brandywine Health Foundation’s focus on the social determinants of health, grant proposals are being solicited from organizations in the greater Coatesville area to address either of two funding priorities. Proposals can focus on ways to improve health outcomes for youths or on projects that will address food insecurity in the community.

This outreach is in conjunction with the foundation’s Coatesville Area Youth Philanthropy Program (CAYPP), currently in its fifth year of service to the community.

In the coming months, CAYPP members will award $15,000 in grants in the range of $5,000 to $10,000 to eligible organizations. CAYPP, which is supported by Citadel Bank, is seeking organizations that engage community mem-

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Announces Initiative

The American Heart Association (AHA) notes that a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons to fight cardiovascular diseases, which the World Health Organization says kill more people across the globe each year than any other disease.

Men and women do not need degrees in nutrition science to create heart-healthy diets for themselves and their families.

In fact, the familiar calls to “eat your fruits and vegetables” many adults recall from childhood lessons or nights around the family dinner table still bear weight today. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is a hallmark of a healthy lifestyle. And supplementing such a diet with other hearthealthy foods is a great way to reduce one’s risk for cardiovascular disease.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) notes that fruits and vegetables are healthy whether they are fresh, frozen, canned, and/or dried. The AHA advises eating fruits and vegetables with every meal and snack, and that may require a little creativity to sneak them into favorite dishes. For example, the AHA suggests replacing half the ground meat in recipes for burgers, meatloaf, or meatballs with cooked chopped mushrooms. The mushrooms can be finely chopped with a knife or food processor, and then sautéed in some olive oil until they are soft. They can then be mixed in with the lean meat, and the meal can be cooked as it normally would. At the breakfast table, fruit can be added to a bowl of cereal to make for a more flavorful morning meal.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful recently announced that registration is open for the 2020 Pick Up Pennsylvania, an initiative supporting the Great American Cleanup. This annual event, which began on March 1, will run through Sunday, May 31.

During this period, registered events can get free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests donated by the Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, and Keep America Beautiful, as supplies last. Events can include litter cleanups, cleanups of illegal dumps, community greening and beautification, special collections, and education events and must be registered at www.gacof pa.org to receive free cleanup supplies.

During the 2019 event, 92,342 volunteers were instrumental in cleaning up over 6 million pounds of trash during 5,356 events held across the state.

Groups, individuals, and local governments participate in the annual initiative as a way to rally volunteers, reduce cleanup costs, and be connected to a larger movement.

When people buy grains, the DHHS recommends reading the ingredients list on the package before purchasing. They should make sure whole wheat or another whole grain is the first item in the ingredients list, and they should choose only those products that say 100% whole grain. Instead of preparing white rice as a side dish, people should serve brown or wild rice, quinoa, or oats.

As part of its yearlong 300th anniversary celebration, Hephzibah Baptist Church will host a handbell concert by students from the Cairn University School of Music on Sunday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public; a freewill offering will be received.

Directed by Kenneth Borrmann, the handbell choir from Cairn, a Christian university in Langhorne, will perform classical and sacred music. The handbell choir tours locally each spring.

Jeff Haag, administrative pastor, also announced that the performance by the handbell choir is the first of three concerts that have been planned at the church. The Lincoln University choir will perform on Sunday, April 26, and singer Kevin Pierce will perform on Sunday, June 21. Both concerts will begin at 7 p.m.

Videos of a performance by the Lincoln University choir and the Cairn University handbell choir can be found at the church website, www.hbchurch.info.

In addition, as part of the yearlong observance, the old church building, built in 1900, will be open on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. The original stone building is located next to the current church, which was built in 1987. The next tour will be on April 4. Tours will run monthly through November.

Visitors will have an opportunity to view the church’s colorful stained-glass windows, original curved wooden pews and pipe organ. Haag will be on hand to conduct the tours, and people can ask questions about the history of the building.

Events will culminate during the church’s annual May Meeting weekend, scheduled this year for Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17. There will be a Sunday service attended by previous pastors and congregation members, a traditional covered dish lunch, a graveside service to honor veterans from the church and other special activities.

The Chester County 4-H program is looking for several volunteers to help engage youth in STEM education with an emphasis on robotics, engineering design, and computer sciences.

Volunteers would work directly with youth on short-term projects or in ongoing 4-H clubs.

Volunteer training is provided.

Locally, 4-H is coordinated by Penn State Extension in Chester County. Chester County 4-H has established robotics clubs across the county that provide fun, hands-on learning opportunities for youths ages 8 to 18.

HNT Chicken Opens In Oxford HNT Chicken recently opened its sixth and newest location at 66 S. Third St., Oxford. A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on March 9.

HNT, which stands for hot ‘n’ tender, will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays and from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Part of the HNT Chicken mission is to be an active participant in the communities where it is located. In Oxford, HNT is partnering with the Eli Seth Matthews Leukemia Foundation, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer.
