Octorara to stage “Shrek the Musical”
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Octorara Junior-Senior
High School will present “Shrek the Musical” as its spring production. Performances will take place on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, March 1, at 2 and 7 p.m.
“Shrek” tells the story of a green ogre who longs to live in solitude in his swamp. However, his life is interrupted by an invasion of fairy tale characters who were all banned from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad. Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad to get his swamp back by rescuing Fiona,
whom Farquaad wants as his bride. Shrek is helped along the way by the talkative Donkey.
However, after rescuing Fiona Shrek finds out that he and the princess have something in common, which bonds them together. The themes of the play include never judging someone by their looks and the importance of following your heart.
At Octorara, the musical stars Declan Lomboy as Shrek, Eva Elboubrki as Donkey, Blake Beahm as Farquaad and Elizabeth Murphy as Fiona.
“Shrek the Musical” is based on the Oscar-winning animated film “Shrek,” which was released
in 2001. The Broadway musical premiered in 2008. It was nominated for eight Tony Awards and won one for Best Costume Design. While the plot of the play is based on the movie, the Broadway version features additional songs.
Students were encouraged to watch the Broadway musical, which was available on streaming sites, prior to auditioning. “Before auditions, we asked them to watch the musical in order to get an idea of the characters and the songs that they would be singing,” said director K.C. Testerman. “We wanted them to move away from the movie, because (it differs from the

Declaring snow days, budgeting, completing administrative tasks and working with staff members and the Octorara Area School District (OASD) Board of Directors are just some of the responsibilities of Steven Leever, the OASD superintendent of schools. But what is most important to Leever is helping Octorara students succeed at school and in life. He also enjoys having the opportunity to interact with students directly. Leever, who was appointed superintendent in April of 2023 by the OASD Board of Directors, recently shared information about what his job entails with the Community Courier.

Community Courier: What are some of your job duties?
Leever: As superintendent, the duties are many. First and foremost, superintendents are responsible for the educational and learning environment of our schools. This means a lot of work with other district leaders (directors, principals, etc.) to ensure that learning is the

The community is encouraged to participate in all events. For the second year, the Christiana Historical Society and the Christiana Fire Com pany are teaming up to present the all-you-can-eat spaghetti

dinner, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the fire company, 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana. available at the door while supplies last. Dinners ordered in advance will be discounted.
Members of the Christiana Historical Society will have an information table set up during the dinner and will offer items for sale, such as mugs, historical books and postcards. “It will also be a membership table if people are interested in joining,” said society member Patti Shrom. Members pay an annual fee, which helps support the society’s activities, including its historical programs and speaker series.
Attendees will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets, containing items and gift cards donated by local businesses. “There will be at least 15 baskets to choose from,” said Shrom. “There will be a cat lovers basket, a book basket, a jewelry basket and a basket from LanChester Grill & Hearth in Gap and Berevillo Pizzeria in Christiana.”
In addition to those already mentioned, other local businesses that have donated basket items include Hostetter Realty in Gap and The Brass Eagle Restaurant in Gap.
New this year will be an auction that will feature two items, a 24-inch Dimplex electric fireplace donated by LanChester Grill & Hearth and a handcrafted live edge walnut side table with hairpin metal legs crafted
and donated by Meryl Ranck. Winners will be announced beginning at 5 p.m. and need not be present.
Girl Scouts from Cadette Troop 4637 will also be on hand offering cookies for sale and assisting with the dinner. Proceeds from the dinner will be divided equally by the two organizations. Christiana Fire Company is an all-volunteer fire company that serves Christiana Borough, Atglen Borough and Sadsbury Township. To learn more, visit www.christiana fire.com or www.facebook.com/ christianafirecompany.
The historical society will use the proceeds for the ongoing restoration of the William Brinton House, its headquarters, which is located at 17 Green St., next to Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church.
For more information about the dinner and to order tickets, visit www.facebook.com/christiana historicalsociety or www.christiana historicalsociety.com.
As part of its speaker series, the society will present a program by Gwendolyn Dickinson, who will speak about her grandfather William Chester Ruth, an African-American machinist, Lancaster County business owner and inventor. The talk will be presented on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Christiana Borough Building, 10 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana.
Another upcoming event being planned by the historical society is a Descendants Luncheon set for Saturday, March 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Christiana Freight Station, 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana.
“We are trying to invite families of those involved in the Christiana Resistance,” Shrom said, explaining that the notable event in local history involved a slave rebellion when community members defended slaves from capture by a slave owner who came to the area to claim them.

“We are hoping residents bring pictures and things they can share.”
The ticket fee will include a catered lunch. Community members are also welcome to attend to hear the stories that local residents will retell, including society president Darlene Colón, who is a descendant of one of the participants in the Resistance.

Ellmaker Mansion
Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township
For the next several months, “From the Attic” will explore the properties that Gen. Marquis de Lafayette would have passed on his journey through Salisbury Township in 1825. As part of the Lafayette 200 Bicentennial celebration, a re-enactor portraying “Lafayette” will visit the area again on Friday and Saturday, July 25 and 26, and will visit historic White Chimneys in Gap.
The Kennedy-Ellmaker Mansion is located in what is now the Village at Gap shopping center. In the late 1700s and throughout the 1800s,
the Kennedy name dominated deed records for Salisbury Township. Family connections drew James Kennedy to the Gap area in 1788 when he built the Rising Sun Tavern, which has since been demolished.
Per his father’s will in 1799, James Jr. inherited 270 acres of what has become the heart of Gap, including the Bellevue Presbyterian Church eastward to what became known as the Kennedy-Ellmaker farm.
Tax records indicate that James Jr. built a 35-by-30-foot house of two stories. When James Jr. died

Mansion from pg 3
in 1839, his son William inherited one-half of the property and then purchased the other half inherited by sister Anna Maria. It appears that it is William who raised the beautiful mansion that can still be seen. The original small structure that sits behind the mansion is considered the original building. Apparently, debts seemed to follow the property from then on. When William died, his wife could not afford the upkeep of the farm, and it was sold to Nathaniel Ellmaker Jr. in 1852. Nathaniel served as a Pennsylvania legislator and entertained lavishly at the

mansion before enlisting in the Union Army. Upon returning home, he rented out the farm, preferring to reside in Lancaster until his death in 1894. Debt followed debt, and by 1909 the Ellmaker property came into William and Samuel M. Slaymaker’s ownership.
Through rather convoluted circumstances, from 1942 the property was in and out of ownership for the next 50 years until Lowe Associates purchased the entire farm and built the Village at Gap shopping center. The barn was demolished, but included in the permits was the stipulation

that the new owners “try to seek an adaptive use” for the old mansion. However, it stood vacant for several years, suffering severe damage from vandalism and fire until the Salisbury Township called upon the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster in hopes of saving the treasure before it had to be razed due its hazardous condition.
Fortunately, the Auntie Anne’s corporation, led by Salisbury Township citizens Omar and Anne Beiler, stepped in and, with the help of the Historic Preservation Trust, the building eventually resumed its grand appearance, with its stone exterior exposed to view and the white Tuscan columns gracing the front portico.
The Beilers applied for National Registry recognition, but they were told that to achieve this aim, the home would need to be restored largely to its original appearance, including covering the exterior stone walls with white painted stucco - historically a sign of the owners’ wealth. Not wanting to cover up the stone, the Beilers did not further pursue the Registry designation.
The restored mansion served as a bed and breakfast for a while. Today it is known as the Ellmaker Center, home to Cornerstone Reproductive Health. Employees and visitors are able to enjoy the tall, elegant windows, the beautiful chandelier in the entrance hall, the grand staircase and the warm charm of a fireplace in each room.
Superintendent
primary focus of what happens in our schools. There is leadership development, recruiting the next generation of teachers, problem solving and communicating with our community. We work with the board to develop and implement policies to support our students. Developing a budget for the district is a yearlong task, and the superintendent is heavily involved in finance. I would say close to half my time is spent in meetings where we are actioning all the things that make the fulfillment of our vision to empower students to build successful futures a reality.
Community Courier: What is a typical day like?
Leever: Every day is different. Recently, we have dealt with a lot of weather-related issues. There are many meetings to push forward the learning initiatives that we are engaged in. I met with members of the public, with two state representatives last week, with parents, teachers and even students. We spend a lot of time planning and executing the various things that will allow our schools to continuously improve.
Community Courier: What would people be surprised to learn about your job?

from pg 1
Leever: I think they would be surprised at how much fun it can be to read to our primary students. It is one of the most enjoyable things I get to do. I think people would also be surprised at the number of things that schools are doing for the well-being of students, and they would likely be surprised to learn of the diversity of tasks that superintendents are involved in.
Community Courier: What is your favorite part of the job?
Leever: Being able to witness our kids realizing their dreams, building their own successful futures. We get to see when our hard work translates into student success. The feeling that maybe you had a small part in the success of a student is very gratifying.
Community Courier: What do you do in your spare time?
Leever: We love to travel, watch sports and take care of the yard. I was able to travel to all of the Major League Baseball parks with my son over about 10 years. My wife and I are currently on a quest to visit all 63 national parks. We have been to 20 so far, and it will take us a long time to get to them all. Bryce Canyon (National Park in Utah) has been my favorite so far.

musical). We encouraged them to watch the actual Broadway production.”
Declan noted that he watched the musical several times before his audition. “(Declan) actually auditioned with the accent - a Scottish brogue,” noted Testerman. “He was the only one who auditioned with the accent.”
When asked what the most challenging aspects of starring in the production are, Eva stated, “Learning
the music and the (choreography) together and building a connection with other cast members on stage.”
“Following stage directions and saying lines (at the same) time,” added Elizabeth.
“For me, the accent and having confidence on stage,” replied Declan, who has starred in previous plays at Octorara. He was Daddy Warbucks in last year’s performance of “Annie” and played Uncle Henry in “The Wizard of Oz.”

“Shrek the Musical” will feature live music performed by a pit band, consisting of Octorara students as well as community members.
The production has a large cast, which includes elementary school students from the Octorara Primary

Learning Center. “We also have littles - fifth- and sixth-graders from Octorara,” said Testerman. “I started directing here with ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ (and we used) littles that year as Munchkins. Most of them do the (choreography), but two or three spin around on stage, and that is cute, too. Last year, we did ‘Annie,’ and we brought in some littles as orphans.”
She said that high school theater productions should utilize as many students as possible in both the cast and crew. The shows should also be family-friendly. “It’s really important to choose something that is familiar,” said Testerman, who chose the musical along with Octorara music teacher Joe Lynch. “We also feel that community members will come because they have kids who want to see Shrek, and they know the story. We want to have big cast and get as many kids involved as possible.”
Testerman pointed out that participating in a show also brings together students who may not interact during a regular school day.
“Theater becomes a family. We spend so much time together,” she said, adding that parents are also involved in the production, as well as teachers, who help with music, costuming and building sets. “It is a community family function at Octorara.”
She added that what makes “Shrek” so appealing are the large musical numbers. “It’s fun, and there is a lot of movement and enjoyment,” she said. “The choreography, done by Nicole Norton, has been excellent. (Plus), there are so many songs.”
Octorara Junior-Senior High School is located at 228 Highland Road, Atglen. Tickets for the show will be available at the door. There will be separate prices for adults and for students and senior citizens.
