“Alice In Wonderland� Tea Party Fundraiser Set

The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana will hold their fifth annual fundraising tea on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. next door to the library at Chantry Place, located at 15 N. Bridge St., Christiana. The theme for this year’s event is “Alice in Wonderland,â€? with dĂŠcor reminiscent of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Costumes related to the theme are encouraged but not required. Tea hats are also encouraged.

The event is designed for adults and teenagers age 14 and up. Admission will include tea and light refreshments such as tea sandwiches, sweets and savories.

Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance by Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the library or by calling 610593-6683. Members of groups who wish to be seated together should alert the library when they purchase tickets.

Bridge Of Hope Chester County Names Executive Director

Although Bridge of Hope Chester County is now part of a national organization and it has new leadership, the philosophy of the organization remains the same. “We are a nonprofit organization whose commitment is to end homelessness,� stated executive director Lisa Cameron.

Prior to her appointment to Bridge of Hope in January, Cameron served as director of empowerment services at YWCA Lancaster from 2010 to 2019. Her work with the YWCA continues as a consultant with the YWCA USA for a pilot program that focuses on girls and women of color who have experienced trauma.

Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox introduced Marley, the newest member of the office, on Jan. 14. Following a training period, the 18month-old Labrador retriever will replace the recently retired K-9 Melody as the courthouse comfort dog.

K-9 Marley, who is partnered with Sgt. Janis Pickell, followed the same path to the Chester County Sheriff Office (CCSO) as K-9 Melody. He received training at the Seeing Eye in Morristown, N.J., a renowned guide dog facility. Occasionally, dogs do not meet the Seeing Eye’s specific requirements for service and become “career change� dogs, frequently finding a productive home in law enforcement or search and rescue.

Sgt. Paul Bryant Jr., who heads the CCSO K-9 Unit, said that he was pleased that K-9 Marley became available days after he called the Seeing Eye center to make inquiries. Bryant also said that demand for K-9 Melody’s services more than tripled during her tenure of more than four years at the Chester County Justice Center.

Bridge Of Hope from pg 1 Cameron has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and theater from Eastern Mennonite University and a master’s degree in community counseling from Western Michigan University. She is a licensed professional counselor and a certified trauma practitioner and has worked as a mental health therapist since 2004.

Bridge of Hope began serving families facing homelessness more than 30 years ago in Lancaster and Chester counties. It was started by churches in the Gap area.

Today, Bridge of Hope Chester County is one of 19 Bridge of Hope locations across 12 states. “The national organization started in 2002 to help bring the model to other communities, first in Pennsylvania and then across the country,� said Kathy Beiler, director of strategic engagement. “The national office provides the curriculum and support to the affiliates and to the other locations.�

As part of the Bridge of Hope program, homeless families or those in danger of becoming homeless are connected with a church or faith-based community, called neighboring volunteers, along with a case manager. The goals of the program include providing families with safe and sustainable housing, improving their financial position and long-term resources and offering a support system. “Our definition of homelessness is anything that compromises safe and stable housing,� Beiler explained. “This could be a family doubled up with someone else or people who are living out of their cars. These are people experiencing homelessness.�

Bridge of Hope clients are matched with neighboring volunteers who provide support and tangible services such as child care and transportation to work or school. “The neighboring volunteers are

six to 10 volunteers (from a church) who almost act like an extended family,� Beiler noted. “(Clients) do need to commit to be in the program for about 18 months.

It’s not a short-term solution; it is a longterm solution to homelessness. They are in it for the long haul. We build a foundation of support.�

While in the program, Bridge of Hope clients may receive help with budgeting, finding a better job, getting a GED and/or completing their education. Short-term rental assistance is also provided on a sliding scale. “When they are facing this period of instability, that is one less thing they have to worry about,� Cameron said.

Bridge of Hope is in need of local congregation members to become neighboring volunteers. “There is a training component - a minimum of five hours - with me,� said Cameron. “We learn a lot about homelessness and what the expectations are for the families and also for the neighboring volunteers, and we intentionally create opportunities in which these groups of people can meet and begin to form a healthy and long-lasting relationship.�

Churches already involved in the program include Sandy Hill Community Church in Coatesville, which was one of the founders of Bridge of Hope Chester and Lancaster Counites, and Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester. “For churches who do want to respond to this call, it is an exciting opportunity.

Future plans at the library include some structural changes. “The county actually approved a plan to redesign the first floor of the library beginning in 2021,� Dube noted. “The plan opens up the lobby area to relieve congestion, making it more accessible for wheelchairs, scooters and strollers,� Dube pointed out. “We will also be adding glass-enclosed workspaces for private or collaborate use in the reference area. Finally, we will be combining the reference and multimedia desks to provide more efficient service to our patrons.�

Libraries were evaluated and compared based on expenditure categories. In order to qualify for consideration, libraries must be a public entity, have a service area with a population of at least 1,000 residents and have a total operating expenditure of at least $10,000. CCL received a three-star designation within the $5 million to $9.9 million expenditure category.

The Star Library designation is just one of the many honors that the library has received recently. In 2019, it earned the Pennsylvania Library Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s State Library of the Year Award.

April Koppenhaver and her husband, Charles E. Gaul II, already had a dog, Valentino, when a second canine came into their care. Milo was a rescue dog, so his age was undetermined. The beagle mix had been adopted by a family member, but after more than a decade, Milo’s owner developed allergies and sought a new home for the beloved pet.

Valentino and Milo were used to being the only dogs in their homes, so Koppenhaver moved Milo into Mulberry Art Studios, the gallery she founded. Milo quickly became a favorite of visitors.

“He was always smiling,” Koppenhaver recalled. “He’d sit there, and you’d hear” - she tapped her finger on a wooden counter. “He was thumping his tail to greet people.”

Toward the end of his life, Milo developed cancer, and he died in November 2018. Gaul, who also had serious health issues, died at age 93 on Jan. 5, 2019, shortly before the couple’s 10th anniversary.

In working through her grief from the two losses, Koppenhaver thought about how to commemorate Gaul and Milo.

Thus, the Charles E. Gaul II and Milo “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition was created. The inaugural show last year featured 197 pieces of art related to pets.

“There were all kinds of animals and some we couldn’t recognize,” Koppenhaver said. Styles ranged from the serious to the whimsical, including a cat wearing high-heeled shoes. “This was the first time we called for (a range of skill, from) children to professionals. We had refrigerator art next to $750 pieces,” she added.

The second annual “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition will be held this spring at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Entries are being accepted, with a deadline of Wednesday, April 1. Initially, the deadline had been a

month earlier, but gallery curator and publicist Stephanie Cole explained that an extra month had been added so local art teachers have more time to participate with their classes. During the application process, digital images of artwork may be submitted.

The originals do not have to be brought to the studio until the week of April 20, Cole said. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 1, from 5 to 9 p.m.

A best-in-show award and a people’s choice award will be bestowed in the student and adult categories. Entries will be juried to ensure that the pieces in the show have theme-related subjects and that they are appropriate to be viewed by audiences of all ages. “(The subject) should be an animal that they’ve cared for, that they’ve known and loved,” Koppenhaver said.

Application to the show is free, but a cost has been set to participate in the show. The participation fee will be waived for one piece for each artist who is a high school student or younger, with a reduced rate, as compared to the adult fee schedule, for additional entries. The artwork may be sold through the exhibition, and Mulberry Art Studios will take a commission. The proceeds will be donated to The Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Last year’s show raised $1,000 for the organization.

The Sebastian Foundation was founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety and aims to facilitate the adoption of unwanted animals. Cole provided a statement from foundation volunteer Ellen Stark, who said, “(Donations received will help in a variety of ways), from basic needs such as food and bedding to providing medical care to dogs that, in a lot of instances, may have been neglected, abused, or never seen a veterinarian. Sebastian Foundation relies on the generosity of donors to give these guys a healthy and happy future. No amount is too small to make a difference.”

The library has announced that several upcoming events have been planned.

The library conference room will be the location for How Money Works, a workshop on how to manage finances, on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon.

This free financial seminar is not organized by the library; rather, it is a community event sponsored by the Lancaster Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Mount Zion AME Church of Atglen. Advance registration is requested and may be made by calling the organizers at 484-995-0823.

Also on Feb. 8, a workshop - Introduction to Book Folding - will be held in the conference room from 1 to 3 p.m. Book folding uses folding and cutting skills to make decorative patterns in the page edges of a book. Samples can be seen in the showcases at the library.

“We’re going to work on a simple

(folding pattern). Because we sell old books in our bookstore, we thought that would be a great thing to go with it,” said Jeannette Kolb, president of the Friends of the Library.

According to Jim Hertzler, chair of the committee of Ephrata- and Akron-area churches that are planning the group’s 16th annual sportsmen’s banquet, speaker Merle R. Fredericks was recommended to the group by a committee member and then references were checked. The outcome was favorable. “(Fredericks) fit the criteria we were looking for,” noted Hertzler.

Two years ago, due to the demand for tickets, the event was expanded to two nights, and that format will be in place again this year. The family-friendly banquet will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 12 and 13, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and a family-style dinner including chicken and ham balls will be served at 6:15 p.m. A number of door prizes will be given out each evening as well.

Fredericks, who hails from Medina, N.Y., has been an avid big game hunter his whole life. Hunting around the country, he has pursued whitetail deer, elk, pronghorn, antelope, black bear, and mule deer as far south as Mississippi and as far west as Oregon. He has hunted successfully using a variety of instruments, including a bow, shotgun, rifle, and muzzleloader. Fredericks has a history in law enforcement, with a career spanning 25 years. He is a retired county sheriff.

Fredericks is a New York state-certified bowhunting education instructor and a lifetime member of Christian Bowhunters of America (CBA), currently serving as executive director of the organization. He also serves as the chair of CBA’s board of directors. CBA is an outreach to the archery community, offering programs for both adults

and youths, while proclaiming the good news of the Gospel. The organization seeks to exalt and serve Jesus Christ by leading lost people to Him and encouraging Christian growth. CBA’s purpose includes challenging bowhunters to allow Christ to govern their individual lives and to share the common joy and experience of bowhunting with other Christian bowhunters.

According to Hertzler, a number of vendors will be on hand with displays when the doors open. Most of the vendors represent local businesses that sell hunting and fishing equipment. A vendor who sells jewelry will also take part.

The banquet is known for the door prizes that are given away during the meal. This year, Hertzler said that a number of items have been donated by local businesses.

Some of those will be designated for junior hunters ages 8 to 16.

About a dozen Ephrata and Akron churches are involved in organizing the event. There is a fee to attend the dinner, and a limited number of tickets are available for each evening. State Reps. Dan Williams and Christina Sappey recently announced two Ag and Youth grants totaling $14,400 for parts of Chester County. The grants include $7,500 for the Chester County chapter of the Pennsylvania FFA, plus $6,900 for the Chester County Intermediate Unit.

The grants fund projects that will improve access to agriculture education in Pennsylvania with the goal of addressing the looming 75,000 workforce deficit the state’s agriculture industry faces in the coming decades.

The Chester County FFA funding will be used to restore a Farmall tractor and build a log splitter using welding, mechanics, and other skills. At Chester County Intermediate Unit, the funding will be used for students to participate in the Animal and Veterinary Science program via field trips and career development activities.
