nlike a typical resolution that can quickly be forgotten, a commitment to volunteer in the new year is a decision that can make a lasting impact in the community. Many local nonprofit organizations are in need of volunteers who are willing to help them continue their important work. The Volunteer English Program (VEP) in Chester County is seeking tutors to provide weekly, one-to-one English language instruction for adult immigrants or refugees living in Chester County. Prospective tutors are invited to attend a three-part virtual tutor training workshop via Zoom on Tuesday, Jan. 16; Thursday, Jan. 18; and Monday, Jan. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening. According to Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, tutors are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program. Students can still meet virtually like they did during the pandemic, but many have resumed meeting in person. “People are meeting in person and virtually to accommodate tutors’ and students’ busy schedules,” said Potrako. Suggested meeting places for student/tutor pairs include libraries, churches, coffee shops and cafe areas in local grocery stores. Potrako added that VEP tutors come from all walks of life; a teaching background or knowledge of another language is not necessary. A fee will be charged to participate in the upcoming workshop.
