A Night to Honor Burns: Celebrating Scotland’s Favorite Poet

Cub Scouts Set Christmas Tree Recyclng BY FRANCINE FULTON
Instead of placing a live Christmas tree by the curb for the trash, people may contact members of Cub Scout Pack 20 of Atglen, who will pick it up for a donation on Saturday, Jan. 10. The collected trees are recycled and used for mulch. Those with trees to recycle are asked to remove all decorations prior to pickup. “We pick up trees in Parkesburg, Cochranville, Christiana, Atglen and Gap. We basically ask people for an at-will donation,” said Nick Michalski, committee chair, noting that the Scouts also collected trees on Dec. 27 and Jan. 3. “The parents meet up with some Scouts, and we go around to the houses. We take most of the trees to the Christiana Lions Club Park, where they are cut up and mulched.” Some trees are also taken to Minch Park in Parkesburg. “Some people enjoy us coming to pick up their tree, and it supports Cub Scouts,” Michalski added. Those interested in the service are asked to send an email to pack20leadership@gmail .com. Donations are accepted by PayPal, Venmo, cash or check. “We send out a confirmation email, and we ask that the trees be curbside,” Michalski noted. “(The number of trees) has dropped a little, but last year we got between 15 and 20 trees. I let people know that this is a way that your tree will not go to a landfill. It will be mulched up.” Proceeds from donations will be used for Scouting activities. “We, as a Cub Pack, offer this service, and donations support the Scouts. The annual Burns Night is a fundraising event to help maintain and preserve historic Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. Located at 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, the church was originally constructed in 1752 and is considered the oldest Covenanter church in America. The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation held its first Burns Night Celebration in 2018 at the church, but because the event became popular, the foundation changed the location to Beale Manor to accommodate more guests. Proceeds of ticket sales will benefit various ongoing restoration projects and maintenance at Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. Louis, Mo. Sanders passed away in 1893 but had stopped coming to the house a few years prior. The home sat mostly empty, except for an Amish family renting the back of the house, until the Hon. W.U. Hensel purchased the home in 1893. Hensel made some changes, expanding the porch and adding rooms. This was when the mansion became dubbed “The Bleak House,” in reference to Charles Dickens’ novel as was reported in the Sunday News on July 8, 1928. In contrast to the gloomy name and brown exterior, the context of the 24-room home during Hensel’s time was anything but bleak with its parties, fireworks, Japanese lanterns and white wicker furniture on the porch. Hensel hosted lively garden parties, Fourth of July parties and dances, with guests traveling to Kinzers via carriage and train. Hensel had served as Lancaster County Chairman for the Democratic Party and Attorney General for Pennsylvania, among other business ventures, opening his Bleak House doors to entertain political figures and foreign diplomats. It was reported that even John Philip Sousa paid a visit, after his band performed at Rocky Springs Park in Lancaster. The house held

NEWS DEADLINE: Tuesday at Noon

There was a time when those who could afford it were able to spend the warm months in the countryside in summer homes. The rolling hills of the Gap and Kinzer areas were situated near small towns, not too distant from major cities, along the train route and later the trolley route, providing a countryside respite. On a hill in Kinzers, along Route 30, stood a home that was once renowned in Salisbury Township. It was described in old newspaper articles with words such as “oddity,” “cumbersome,” “massive,” “gingerbread” and “a gloomy Victorian monstrosity.” Known as the Sanders Estate, the Hensel Home and the Bleak House, this home was a grand sight in the area and was noted for its height, massive overhanging eaves, glass cupola, Victorian scrollwork and ornamental designs, according to the Sunday News dated Aug. 5, 1962. According to that same news article, Dr. Sanders, a dentist, had built the home in the 1870s. Newspaper articles from the Lancaster Daily Intelligencer from July 1881 and June 1882 announce his arrival from St.
tatties, which is mashed potatoes and turnips; salad; trifle, served as individual layered desserts; and other Scottish desserts, including sticky toffee pudding. “We make some of (the food) ourselves, and Traditions Catering makes some dishes,” noted Donna McCool, who co-chairs the annual event alongside John Girvin. “It’s a really good meal.” While Burns Night is targeted to the Scottish, it is open to people of all nationalities. “You don’t have to be of Scottish heritage to come,” McCool explained, noting that 90 people attended last year’s event.“If you want to experience a different heritage than yours, it would be a good opportunity to do that.” Visitors are encouraged to get into the spirit of the evening by wearing their tartans, but it is not required. “Tartan is plaid, and different clans have different patterns,” McCool explained. “The tartan can be anything - a sash, a scarf, a dress or kilt, or ladies will wear an evening skirt, which is their tartan. Tartan is official; there is a registry for tartans and clans. I wear my grandmother’s tartan when I go to Scottish events.” After supper, guests will be invited to honor the life of Burns with speeches, readings and toasts. Local musician Charlie Zahm will present “A Tribute to Robert Burns.”Guests will be invited to gather around the piano to sing Burns’ songs, including the classic, “Auld Lang Syne.” According to McCool, Burns’ poem “Address to a Haggis,” written in 1786, popularized dining on haggis. The poem describes the dish’s ingredients and praises its flavor and texture. Fol-

need.” JB Sports Ventures, led by CEO Justin Brown, organized Yeboah’s visit to The POINT. The agency is a community-focused sports and media organization that seeks to build partnerships between professional athletes and local nonprofits. Brown helped organize a fundraiser at The POINT in May, when Philadelphia Eagles player Brandon Graham was the guest speaker. “(Yeboah) reached out to Justin and said that he wanted to give back and help out the community. Justin reached out to me because we worked together in the past,” explained Dwayne Walton, executive director of The POINT. “(The Christmas distribution) is a really big operation for us,” he added. “We actually have to shut down the week before Christmas so we can put together the gifts for the families.” While at The POINT, Yeboah offered words of encouragement to the volunteers, some of whom spent time at The POINT during
their school-age years and returned to volunteer. “Now you are back - giving back. That is amazing to see,” he told the POINT alumni. “I just wanted to let you all know that I’m proud of you guys for doing the right thing and helping the community, because that’s really what it’s all about.” Yeboah also toured The POINT and visited its various rooms, including the youth sports room and Lexi’s Art Room, which was named for a former POINT student who died in a car accident. The POINT, located at 700 Main St., Parkesburg, is a faith-based center that provides mentorship, after-school programs, free meals, leadership development programs and a safe environment for youths ages 8 to 18. NFL player Kenny Yeboah visited The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center on Dec. 16 during the agency’s Christmas gift distribution. He toured the facility, met with volunteers and also personally donated winterwear for families in need. Welcoming Yeboah to The POINT was Amy Walton, program director, who pointed out the hundreds of toys that were wrapped and placed in bags ready to be given out. “We have hundreds of kids that come to the youth center, (and parents) call in who need help with Christmas,” she explained. “A lot of the parents ask for hygiene products and clothing, but we all like to provide gifts for the students. We are serving about 90 students this year.” Amy explained that volunteers deliver the gifts to parents in advance, allowing them to place the gifts under the tree for their children themselves. “We fill their orders and pray with them and encourage them for the new year,” she said. Yeboah, who has played tight end for the New York Jets and the Detroit Lions, said he wanted to be part of the Christmastime effort, noting that “giving back to the community is deeply personal” for him. “I just recently played with the Detroit Lions. I am home right now. I got injured, so I am out for the season,” he noted while addressing volunteers and staff members at The POINT. “I wanted to do something for the community. I reached out to some people, and they connected me to this awesome thing that you are doing. It is amazing and special to see (all the gifts). After Hensel’s passing in 1915, the Bleak House was passed down to his daughter, Elizabeth Nauman. Family members occupied the home until it was sold to Lyle W. Ratliff, an antique dealer from Sadsburyville, in 1947, according to the Sunday News published March 23, 1947. The Lancaster New Era reported

that Bleak House was purchased by the Gap VFW in 1950. In 1962, the Industrial Era home/VFW was razed due to an internal fire in the barroom. What’s left of this iconic building? A stone foundation from one of the structures and irreplaceable treasures that once adorned the interior and exterior of the home that may still be there. There are also written stories where some share their perceptions of this dark mansion on the hill.

Additional volunteers are needed. “We are technically open, but the signage is still going up. We will also modify the outside road sign,” Minor stated. “The bulk of the work is done by volunteers, including sorting, pricing and keeping (the space) clean.” In addition to volunteers, donations are welcome. Needed items are vintage goods and antiques of all types; books, comic b o ok s and m a gazines; glassware, kitchenware and cookware; records, CDs, cassette tapes and other recorded media ; toys, games and puzzles; and ar twork. Peifer gets along with his co-workers as well, often spending time in the store even when he is not on the clock. He is also well known to Dutch-Way shoppers. “He is on a name-byname basis with a lot of folks. They know him and he knows them.
