BACKYARD GARDEN SHEDS Garages are often used to store the extra items that do not fit inside the home. But not everyone has a household garage, and if they do, they may prefer to use it to accommodate their family’s vehicles. While people may turn to self-storage units for extra storage space, garden storage sheds present another place where individuals can keep items out of sight but easily accessible. Homeowners may want to think about a shed purchase to keep outdoor lawn and garden essentials or sporting equipment in their own place. In addition, the new trend of “she sheds” and “man sheds,” where sheds are transformed into a craft oasis, reading nook, or sports fan haven, are becoming increasingly popular and providing yet another use for the space. The process of purchasing a shed is not as simple as finding the least- or most-expensive type on the market. There are other factors that come into play when selecting a shed. • Appearance and design: Although the function of a shed is typically to store items out of sight, the shed itself will be in full view in a yard. Therefore, plenty of homeowners prefer something that has just as much aesthetic appeal as it does storage capacity. An unsightly shed can affect the overall appearance of a property or even hurt the sale price for homeowners thinking about putting the home on the market. It's important to select a shed in a price range that also complements the style of the home so it coordinates with other features. Some people choose to have a custom-built shed that can replicate the architectural style of the home and even features the same siding and finishing materials.

• Size: Sheds come in a variety of sizes, from compact, locker-size sheds to large buildings that may even double as a garden room, pool room, or children’s playhouse. Homeowners should keep in mind that the size of the shed may have to meet local municipality rules for additions or structural changes to a property. A larger shed may require a permanent flooring material, such as concrete, and may be subject to permit applications and inspections, whereas a smaller shed may not have such stringent requirements. Furthermore, certain towns or homeowners associations may restrict the size and placement of a shed if it interferes with traffic visibility or impacts a neighbor in a negative way. • Siding materials: Sheds are constructed of various exterior materials. Some of the more affordable options are metal or plywood and particle board. However, these materials can be easily compromised by rain and snow. The most maintenance-free materials are vinyl or molded PVC-type plastics. Cedar and wood are popular siding choices but won't be maintenance-free. They need upkeep and also tend to be more expensive, but the cost may pay for itself in durability as well as an attractive appearance. • Minor enhancements: Touches like decorative architectural features, window boxes, shutters, or surrounding shrubs and plants around the shed can make it an integral part of the landscape instead of simply a storage structure. Double doors will ensure large pieces of equipment can fit inside the shed. The addition of a pressure-treated ramp at the entryway will provide easy access to the shed as well. The foundation of the shed also needs to be considered.

ORGANIZATION S926100

A well-organized shed can save homeowners time and energy. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just what needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they're no longer needed. Make a pile of anything that will be kept, a separate one for donations, and a third for garbage. Take inventory to determine if anything is missing or needs to be replaced. Now that the entire shed is empty, assess just how much room there is. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards, and any other materials that allow items to hang or store off the floor are good investments. Cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember where items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the wall so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of which tools are missing and which ones need to be purchased. Don't forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools such as rakes and shovels on the inside of the doors so they will always be easily accessible. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers, and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up, out of the reach of pets and children. Make sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items or items that may otherwise roll.

Safety Pointers For Painting Indoors

There are many reasons to paint the interior of a home, and homeowners may be gearing up to tackle such a project this spring. However, potential safety hazards should be considered when planning to paint the interior of a home. Besides the injury risks associated with climbing up and down ladders to paint ceilings or out-of-reach corners, the biggest health risks tend to involve the chemical nature of paint. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the majority of paints contain chemicals that evaporate in the air, and these chemicals can adversely affect human health. Problems associated with chemicals found in some paints include eye and throat/lung irritation, headaches, dizziness, and vision trouble. Though painting is a relatively simple home improvement project, painters still should take the following precautions to help ensure their safety when painting the interior of their homes.

• Read product labels carefully. Paints vary considerably with regard to how hazardous they can be, so it's best to read paint can labels thoroughly. Labels provide safety instructions specific to that particular paint, including suggestions to reduce hazards and advice on what to do should users develop any adverse health effects. It also helps to re-read labels once the painting project has been completed. Labels often include instructions on how to clean or discard products and tools after use, as well as suggestions on where to store paints or other products used during the project that may be flammable. The Relationship Between

Color and Mood

Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. The colors homeowners choose for their walls can give rooms their own unique feel and even affect the moods of the people within them. Finding the right shade for a bedroom or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first color that catches the eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be worthwhile to choose a color that helps one feel good rather than just following design trends. The chosen paint color may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat.

Blue -

To create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colors that can help lower stress levels and promote sleep. That's why blue is a frequent fixture in bedrooms and bathrooms. However, too much blue can make a room appear cold and stark, so balance out blue with some warmer accents.

Orange -

Many people do not immediately consider bright orange for their homes, but when used as an accent shade, orange can really brighten up a home. Orange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youthful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent wall or a burst of color with orange throw pillows. If pumpkin orange seems a little too bold, tone it down by choosing a more pastel, peachy hue, which is equally warm and energizing.

Red -

Red stimulates energy and appetite, which is why the shade is so popular in restaurants and home dining spaces. Red is a good choice for social gathering rooms but may not be the wisest choice for a bedroom, as the color may prove overstimulating.

Green - Green can evoke composure and tranquility and works in any room

of the house. Since green is a color frequently found in nature, it also works well for people who want to bring some of the outdoors inside. To make green feel less subdued and sleepy, work with its complementary opposite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance out the tranquility of green. People have long related purple to royalty, and this dramatic color can add a formal, regal aspect to a home depending on the hue. Purple also may help stimulate the creative side of the brain. In paler shades of lavender, purple can seem almost ethereal and spiritual.

Yellow - Few colors are more

vibrant than yellow, which can help stimulate conversation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow is an ideal way to make any space more welcoming and bright, but homeowners should consider using it sparingly. Yellow accents mixed with touches of purple can offer the balance needed to prevent yellow rooms from overwhelming residents and guests.

to chemicals found in paint can be reduced considerably by painting during the right time of year. Spring and fall make ideal seasons to paint, as the weather outside during these seasons is typically pleasant, allowing painters to open all of the windows without making conditions inside the home unfavorable.

• Open all of the windows and doors. While it's especially important to open all of the windows and the door in the room that is being painted, it's even better to open as many windows and doors throughout the home, making sure to push curtains and blinds back to let the fresh air pour in. Keeping all windows and doors open (using screen doors to keep animals or insects from entering the home) promotes ventilation throughout the home, allowing for constant airflow that will usher any potentially harmful chemicals out. If necessary, place a box fan within a window frame to promote cross-ventilation. Never turn on the air conditioner as a substitute for fans and open windows, as that will not be pushing any air out of the home. • Seal paint cans tightly once the project has been completed. At the end of the project, there may be leftover paint.

Contact the local government to determine the best way to dispose of any unwanted paint and paint cans. If there is a substantial amount of paint left, be sure the lid is closed as tightly as possible, as vapors can leak through poorly sealed containers, putting the health of residents at risk. Once again, read the label to determine the best place to store leftover paint.

Fairy Garden plant a seed of

whimsy with a

Gardening can be an enjoyable and eco-friendly activity for adults and children alike. Adding a touch of whimsy by creating a fairy garden can make the pastime even more attractive to children. Fairy gardens can be designed in outdoor gardens or in containers that children can tend and enjoy indoors. Here are six steps to getting a fairy garden up and running:

Choose a container or location. Decide where to place the fairy garden. A whimsical place such as a hollowed-out tree stump may provide an ideal outdoor setting, but containers such as old pots, hanging baskets, picnic baskets, or larger tins can be used just as well. Wooden birdhouses with their roofs removed also can make for clever places to house the gardens. Choose a theme. Fairy houses can take on any theme their creators prefer. Themes help children decide what to include in their gardens. For example, a seaside retreat may work well

Cover and fairy gardens by Perfect Pots Container Gardens, Strasburg, PA

with little reclining chairs, sea grasses, and succulents. The theme can be completed with some seashells and colored stones. Draw up a design. Before securing anything in the container or digging into an existing garden bed, sketch out a garden design. This will provide an idea of how the finished product will look. Even before planting, gently place plants and other components in their spots and move them around accordingly until the desired look is achieved. Include plants with similar needs. Mixing plants that have different requirements can make it challenging to care for the fairy garden, so select plants that require similar levels of sunlight, prefer similar soil conditions, and require roughly the same amount of watering. Herbs are a smart choice because many varieties stay small and are easily maintained. Don't forget a fairy dwelling. An important step is providing a house for the fairies to inhabit. Small birdhouses can work, but old teapots, bird-nesting boxes, ceramic décor, or even homemade houses assembled out of bark and twigs may be considered. A little imagination will help the garden take on a life of its own. Invite the fairies. Children can invite fairies to take up residence (fairies often show up at night and tend to remain unseen), or they may create their own fairies using craft materials.

Bathroom R enovations That Won’t Break The Bank

A bathroom remodel can be one of the more expensive home improvement projects a homeowner can undertake. Fortunately, there are several simple ways homeowners can give their bathrooms a new look and feel without breaking the bank. • Install a new shower. One of the best ways to give a bathroom a new look is to replace the traditional tub and showerhead with a bigger, more airy shower. Instead of the tub and sliding glass, choose a hinged door with heavier glass, replacing the bathtub entirely. • Add windows and a skylight. Many bathrooms, particularly those in older homes, lack adequate lighting. Adding some extra windows or a skylight can give a bathroom an entirely new look, even if none of the existing features or fixtures are replaced. Sunlight can make a bathroom more inviting, giving the room the feeling of a sanctuary. • Add some entertainment. Many luxury hotels now ensure guests can be entertained even while they're in the bathroom with small flat-screen televisions that sit behind the bathroom's mirror. Guests don't even see the television until it's turned on. Homeowners can bring this lap of luxury into their own homes, allowing them to escape the daily grind with a hot bath while watching a little television as they soak.

• Replace old tiles. Old linoleum tiles give many bathrooms a dated look. Glass tiles are growing in popularity, but those old linoleum or glazed tiles can be swapped out with porcelain or stone tiles to give the room an entirely new look without spending excessively. • Replace the toilet. A new toilet can give the bathroom a sleek, modern look, and since many of today's luxury models are low-flow, homeowners will also save money on their monthly water bills while doing something good for the environment. • Paint. Do not underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom. Dark, small spaces can be made to look more expansive with lighter colors. Cavernous bathrooms that look empty may prove more inviting with darker hues. Pick a paint that is designed for bathroom application so that it will inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. • Update hardware. A new faucet or some new cabinet pulls can make the room look new and fresh without breaking the bank. Match finishes throughout the bathroom so everything will be cohesive. When shopping for a new showerhead, choose a model that also conserves water.
