New Cumberland Welcome to

Just across the river from Harrisburg, the town of New Cumberland is a great community. It extends from shopkeepers on Bridge Street to the borough’s creekside park.

This same land was once home to the Shawnee Indians and later to early residents who built an Iron Forge and established sawmills and other businesses.

A sense of history is important to the people who call New Cumberland home. Residents and businesspeople alike strive to better their hometown with the same drive of early settlers who seized the opportunity presented by the nearby Susquehanna River and Yellow Breeches Creek. The waterways served as perfect transportation routes for lumber they could produce in sawmills – thus giving birth to the town’s first industry.

On paper, the borough, incorporated in 1831 in the southeast section of Cumberland County, covers about 1.7 square miles.

On foot, the borough is a delightful mix of shops, restaurants, businesses and civic organizations, its own library and just enough hustle to make community life interesting. At its core, it is people living life together that makes New Cumberland a pleasant place to live or work. Spread a blanket at the New Cumberland Summer Picnic, tune in to the town band on July Fourth, or celebrate the changing seasons at the annual Apple Festival – and you’ll see what makes this “small town” so special!

Today the town is home to almost 7,500 residents. It has become a bedroom community for residents who work across the river in Harrisburg, the state capital, or travel using the PA Turnpike or the interstate to nearby communities.

Recreation is an essential service for Health and Wellness.

The West Shore Recreation Commission is dedicated to enriching lives by providing quality recreational and leisure-time opportunities for all residents since 1968. The Commission is supported by local tax dollars from participating municipalities (Fairview & Lower Allen townships and New Cumberland, Lemoyne, Goldsboro and Lewisberry boroughs) Residents of these municipalities receive the benefits of a discounted cost on programs as well as early registration each season.

Our recreation guide is published each Fall, Winter/Spring and Summer featuring many programs to develop new skills, confidence, improve health and wellness, decrease your stress levels, and add joy to your life, no matter your age or ability level.

WSRec utilizes various community facilities, West Shore Area schools as well as private business locations for our programs.

Each summer since 1992, WSRec has offered a Summer Day Camp, PlayZone for those who have completed kindergarten to age 12. The camp is held each week day at the Fishing Creek Elementary School in Lewisberry. The full day includes organized activities and special events such as; games, arts & crafts, swimming, skating, prizes, sports, special visitors, educational activities, as well as weekly field trips.

(Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) programs such as Super Structures, Robotics, Game Design, and Machine Maker Lab, so let your imagination go! Many of these programs are offered after school, at different school locations.
