tary and civilian worlds.

The 35th annual Crispus Attucks Community Center MLK Breakfast will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, returning to an in-person gathering at Millersville University with the addition of a livestream option. The event will be held at Marauder Courts at the Student Memorial Center on Shenks Lane. The event’s master of ceremonies will be Jeremy Jenkins from WGALTV. Pedro Rivera, president of Thaddeus Stevens College, is this year’s honorary event chair.

The event is a time for the community to come together, to foster relationships, to dia-

logue around the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and to confront issues of inequity and injustice. This event, the center’s largest fundraiser, annually raises $100,000 - nearly one-third of the center’s yearly budget.

Marc Lamont Hill, who previously spoke at the 2018 MLK Breakfast, will present “And How Are the Children … Now?” “And how are the children?” is a traditional greeting passed amongst the Masai in Kenya. The greeting acknowledges the high value of children and their wellbeing, and it acts as a measure of how the community and society is faring. The goal is to

always be able to answer the greeting with “All the children are well.” Hill will speak about how people can collectively work to build a better community and world, one where they can say, “All the children are well.”

A Philadelphia native, Hill is currently the host of BET News and a political contributor for CNN. He has received numerous awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. He is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University. Prior to that, he held positions at Columbia University and Morehouse College. He is a f ounding board member of the nonprofit organization My5th, as well as a board member and organizer of the Philadelphia Student Union.

Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Reform Project, focusing on drug informant policy. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and he is the author or co-author of several books.

New this year, three ticket options will be available in the spirit of access and inclusion. These ticket options are an in-person ticket, a discounted livestream ticket, and a pay-what-you-will inperson ticket.

To purchase tickets, visit www.caplanc.org/MLK or contact Kristy Aurand at kaurand@caplanc.org or 717299-7388, ext. 3032. Sponsorships are also available; for details, contact Aurand.

First Presbyterian Church

Lancaster, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will display artworks by Dorothy Thayne through Tuesday, Jan. 3, as part of the installation “Art of the Icon: Process as Prayer.”

First Presbyterian Church Lancaster is committed to creating beautiful and original expressions of worship centered in Christ throughout the year and in a variety of ways. Over the years, art has become one of the many focuses of the church to help convey its members’ faith and connect with the greater Lancaster city community. That tradition continues with the current art installation.

Thayne, a Lancaster County artist and iconographer, is displaying more than a dozen icons showcasing her 30 years of focusing on the art of iconography. An icon is a work of art painted in a prayerful manner using a symbolic visual language and images that originate in early church tradition. According to Thayne, an icon is not simply a holy picture; it illustrates a spiritual reality, not a photographic reality. The word “iconography” comes from

“graphia,” referring to the acts of writing and painting - both word and image, and “icon,” which comes from the Greek word “eikon” and means “image.”

Subtle artistic nuances create styles that differentiate the icons of one culture or time period from another. Thayne’s icons, which are painted in the Byzantine style, are a source of sacred art for both the Western and Eastern Catholic churches.

Materials of the highest quality are used to create an icon: pure gold leaf; natural pigments from the Earth, bound with the yolk of an egg; and a base of wood covered with a gesso of chalk and marble dust. The paint is then applied in many layers resulting in a translucency that gives the icon the quality of inner light. The process of creating an icon has many steps, and it may take Thayne months, if not years, to create a piece.

The community is invited to visit First Presbyterian Church Lancaster during open hours to view the installation. For more information, visit www.fpclancasterpa.org or call 717-394-6854.

Alisa Sholly, who has participated in No Longer Alone Ministries family support group meetings for about a decade is grateful for the experience. “As the name says, I no longer feel alone in knowing how to deal with mental health concerns involving loved ones,” said Sholly. “I receive valuable information on mental health topics, a listening ear from others that can understand, and prayer.”

Michele Sipel, director of InHome Services with Landis at Home a division of Landis Communities, is well attuned with the mission of the support group, which meets monthly at Landis Homes. Sipel serves as a liaison for the group, which provides a safe place to open up for those who have a loved one living with mental illness. “It’s a different world, and unless you live it, you don’t know (what it’s like),” said Sipel. “It’s one of those subjects where there’s a lot of stigma, but it is so important.”

Meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month. The next support group meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The January meeting will include a video by Dr.

Discussion Series

Matthew Stanford, PhD, followed by discussion.

The support group was an offshoot of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), which functioned in Lancaster from 1991 to 2019. When NLAM closed its doors, a peer support group and the family support group overseen by the ministries were transferred to local entities. The peer support group, called Paths to Discovery, became part of Faith Friendship Ministries, and the family support group transferred to Landis, where several of the founding members live.

Landis offered personnel with the necessary expertise to help organize the group as well.

Sipel noted that Evon Bergey, vice president of community initiatives with Landis Homes, is from a behavioral health background and added that she and other organizers work with Bob Musser, a licensed social worker who worked with NLAM, to plan meetings, line up speakers, and facilitate meetings. The group began meeting at Landis Homes in January of 2020. After the advent of COVID-19 restric-

tions, the group met virtually. In 2023, January, February, and March meetings will be held via Zoom so that inclement weather will not be a deterrent. The group plans to meet virtually once each quarter so that those who cannot come to Landis Homes may attend.

Among the past topics that were covered at meetings are innovations in treatment, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcoming grief, mental health and the Bible, and bringing healing to senior care.

Sipel said the group provides an atmosphere of caring and acceptance. “You get to know each other, so people feel comfortable being vulnerable. It is very therapeutic to be able to speak about what you’re going through with others who have lived it and understand.”

Sholly noted that NLAM has provided her with optimism. “It is a place to find hope when things seem hopeless,” she said. “I encourage anyone who is struggling or knows someone that is struggling with

mental health issues to attend. It has been a Godsend for me and my family.”

To register for the January Zoom meeting, contact 717381-3599 or jalbright@ landis.org by noon on Friday, Jan. 20.

The Exploring Growing Together Discussion Forum will meet on Thursdays, Jan. 5, 12, and 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 E. Market St. The gathering will take place in Room 103 on the church’s lower level.

Led by Tim Flinchbaugh, participants will discuss “Nomadland” by Jessica Bruder. The book is about people who, due to the Great Recession, have taken to the road by the tens of thousands in RVs and modified vans, forming a growing community of nomads that employers have found to be a new, lowcost labor pool.

Masks are optional. Attendees may bring their lunch to eat during the discussion.

If Warwick School District cancels school, EGT will not meet.

The forum discussion series aims to offer a safe learning environment in which to discuss and explore diverse topics and beliefs. Contact Linda at 717-626-0745 or raven303@ptd.net with questions or suggestions or to obtain a new series schedule.
